How to programatically get enum strings in RT code?

Hi all,
In desktop programs, I can programatically get a list of enum strings by creating a (possibly-hidden) FP control, linking it to a property node, and reading from the Strings[] property.
Unfortunately, property nodes aren't supported on RT targets. What other options are there?
Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming you have one value of an Enum (from, say, a Control, or possibly from an "Enum constant" that you have available) and want to create an array of strings holding all possible values of the Enum.  There are two really nice features that LabVIEW has to allow you to easily accomplish this goal.
First, the Format into String function will accept an Enum and will return a String representing it's "value", i.e. if you create an Enum for a State Machine with values "Initialize", "Acquire", "Process", and "Exit" (corresponding to numbers 0, 1, 2, 3), then putting the Initialize Enum into Format into String returns the string "Initialize".
The other nice feature is that the Increment function (on the Numerics page) "wraps around" on Enums, so that incrementing "Exit" (in the previous example) gives you "Initialiize"
So consider the following:  Create a For Loop with a Shift Register and a tunnel beneath it.  Wire "Initialize" into both the Shift Register and the Tunnel.  Inside the For Loop, take the value on the Shift Register, get its String representation with Format into String (and bring it out through an Indexing tunnel), increment it and connect the incremented value to the output Shift Register.  Wire this incremented value, along with the input tunnel holding the initial value, into an "Is Equal?" comparator that you wire to the While's Stop control.
This will neatly step through every value of the enum exactly once (as it exits when the "wrap-around" occurs), giving you an array corresponding to the values of the Enum.  If you start the process with the first Enum value (using a Constant, for example), the String Array will exactly correspond to your Enum (that is, the first element will be the name of the first Enum value), but even if you put an arbitrary member of the Enum as the input, you will still get an array of all of the Enum values.

  • How to programatically set front panel objects (buttons) to enable, disabled, and disabled and gray

    I'm writing a program that when I am iterating through a loop, I want to have some buttons disabled and grayed. Once the loop is done, I want those buttons to now be enabled.
    But I have no clue how to programatically do this
    (aka enable and disable while the program is running, NOT before the program starts)
    Any help would be appreciated

    Create a property node, & select the 'Disabled' property.  Set it to 0 for enabled, 1 for disabled, & 2 for disabled & grayed.

  • How do you set the value of an enumeration programatically

    I would like to be able to select (programatically) the value of an enumeration.  I don't seem to be able to find any reference to how to do that.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    True, True.  The original post wanted to know how to programmatically "select" the enum value.  To me, that means to either force the enum to display another value, or retrieve the current value.   I thought Ben was referring to the fact that you can't programmatically set or initiate new values into an enum.  Which as he said, can only be done with a Ring.
    "In your example you're not "getting" the value of the enum. You're converting it to a string. That's a different operation."
    I showed two ways to get the value,  one gets the current string value associated with the numeric value, and the other gets the current numeric value.  i went further in the attached vi, by demonstrating how to change the current (displayed) value of the enum by using a string.  (IFF you already know the string values in the enum.)
    In my program, i use a typedef cluster with an enum in it.  At runtime, i need to "select" the active enum value based on which operation i'm performing.  I know from elsewhere in the program what operation i need, but it's string, and there's no easy way to change the value of an enum with a string, except with the backdoor methods i showed.
    I wish my cohort woulda used a ring.  ;-)

  • How to programatically get a Java version (Not default one) ?

    Hi, Java Guru,
    Does anyone know how to programatically get a Java verstion through its full path ?
    For example, there are 5 JVM installed on a user's machine:
    JRE1
    JRE2
    JRE3
    JRE4
    JRE5
    How do you know the Java version under JRE3 ?
    From command line, you can simply type
    JRE3/java -version
    But how to programtically ? (I thought about running a system call, then check the standout, but feel it is not reliable, is there any other way to do it ?)
    Thanks in advance.

    No. That is not waht I want. Using System.getProperties() only can get the default Java information.
    Assume there are many Java version installed on a user's machine and we know all java Path.
    JRE1/bin/java
    JRE2/bin/java
    JRE3/bin/java
    JRE4/bin/java
    JRE5/bin/java
    JREn/bin/java
    JREn/bin/java is the latest one installed, that is, default Java.
    I want to know the JRE3 version before I use it, then how do I know JRE3 version PROGRAMTICALLY ?
    Anyway, thanks for response.

  • How to get a string "yyyyMMdd" into date like MM/dd/yyyy?.

    Hi
    How to get a string "yyyyMMdd" into date like MM/dd/yyyy?. i have used
    SimpleDateFormat.parse but it is giving long value. i want to disply the date
    like MM/dd/yyyy
    thank you

    Do you want the string rearranged or do you want to create an instance of some form of Date class?
    If you want to rearrange the string you could just do it yourself provided you know the date string is going to be of the format yyyyMMdd.
    something like this:
    String newDate = origStr.charAt(4) + origStr.charAt(5) + "/" + origStr.charAt(6) + origStr.charAt(7) + "/" ...etc.

  • How to get the string's byte length?

    Thanks.

    >> Fair cop. I didn't realise that asc() returned the

    > actual character code.
    >
    > and what would be the difference?
    Oh, sorry, whatever the term is (I'm crap with jargon). The
    value returned
    by asc() for those chars was only two bytes (ie: four hex
    digits). I
    didn't realise there was more to it than that, and that
    2-byte value maps
    to some other THREE byte value. I need to do some reading...
    > that's what both cf & java counted as the length.
    CHARACTER length, sure. No-one's disputing that. On the other
    hand,
    no-one's asking about it, either.
    > by adding a BOM you've already effected the encoding,
    which may or may not
    > match the original. so you still don't know how many
    bytes were in the original
    > string.
    [groan]
    Yes, that's a reasonable strawman there. I was only putting
    it in a file
    so I could save it and check the number of bytes occupied by
    the data.
    Clearly... CLEARLY... the OP is not asking for a character
    length of that
    string. They've said as much.
    I copy and pasted the string from their post, and used it as
    a
    demonstration of how "nine" is not the right answer for the
    BYTE LENGTH of
    that string. Whether or not the original string was UTF-8,
    UTF-16 or
    special-marmoset-encoding, it almost certainly was NOT in a
    fictitious kind
    encoding in which each of those particular characters only
    occupied one
    byte each, which would mean that "nine" is the correct answer
    to the
    question.
    When I copied those characters from either the web browser
    for from my
    text-based news agent, notepad identified them (and rendered
    them
    correctly) as UTF-8, so I'm fairly confident they ARE UTF-8.
    Of course
    this could be down to some intermediary encoding (pasting
    them in to the
    original posting, for example, via some encoding-transforming
    mechanism),
    but Occam's Razor suggests the original question was from a
    UTF-8 POV.
    But maybe we should quit speculating and ask the OP. Unless
    they've
    buggered off in despair of how drawn out all this is getting.
    For which I
    would not blame them.

  • How to programatically select text for editing in an af:inputText control?

    Hello, I am new to jdeveloper 11.1.1.3.0 and have searched and searched for info. I must be using the wrong terms as I cannot find any info or example on how to programatically select text for editing in an inputText field.
    My request is to change an existing app so when the user presses a button, control should go to the inputText control (this part works, see existing backing bean code from another developer below) but automatically select the text within for editing by the user (saving the user from having to select the text first before editing).
    Backing bean code to set the focus to an inputText field:
    * sets the cursor to the given component id
    * @param  componentId of item on page
      public void setFocusOnUIComponent(String componentId) {
        FacesContext facesContext = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
        ExtendedRenderKitService service =
          Service.getRenderKitService(facesContext, ExtendedRenderKitService.class);
        UIComponent uiComponent = facesContext.getViewRoot().findComponent(componentId);
        service.addScript(facesContext,
          "Component = AdfPage.PAGE.findComponentByAbsoluteId('" + componentId + "'); Component.focus();");
      } I hope this isn't a dumb question and would appreciate it if someone can steer me in the right direction.
    Thank you for any info,
    Gary

    Hi,
    not a dumb question at all. Before answering it, here some comments on the code you pasted in your question
    1. UIComponent uiComponent = facesContext.getViewRoot().findComponent(componentId);
    This code line is not used at all in your method. So it seems you can get rid of it
    2. "Component = AdfPage.PAGE.findComponentByAbsoluteId('" + componentId + "'); Component.focus();");
    I suggest to change it to
    "var component = AdfPage.PAGE.findComponentByAbsoluteId('" + componentId + "'); component.focus();");
    as it is better coding practice to have variable names starting with a lower case letter and being flagged with the "var" identifier
    For pre-selecting text in an an input component, there is no API available in ADF Faces, which means you need to reach out to the rendered HTML ouput. To access the markup for the rendered component, you can try
    var markup = AdfRichUIPeer.getDomContentElementForComponent(component)
    If this markup returns the HTML input component then you can use JavaScript you find on the Internet to select the area of it. If it does not return the input component then you may have to use
    document.getElementById(componentId+'::content')
    Note however that working directly with generated HTML output bears the risk that your code breaks when - for whatever reason - the ADF Faces component rendering changes in the future

  • How do you append to a "string" type field?

    ABAPers,
    I am trying to understand how to append values to a "string" data type in an efficient way. One way to append to a string is using "concatenate" feature.
    data: myRetVal type string.
    DO
      CONCATENATE myRetVal ',' myNewData INTO myRetVal.
    ENDDO.
    However, CONCATENMATE is not efficient in this scenario. Each time you call it, myRetVal gets copied into myRetVal all over. As the string grows, this statement will execute slower and slower.
    The other option I thought is to use offset mechanism.
    MOVE myNewData to myRetVal+myRetValLen.
    However, it appears "string" and "xstring" type fields do not support offset and length operations.
    Is there a third choice that I am missing?
    Thank you in advance for your help.
    Pradeep

    There is no such operator.
    But if just using literals, you can use the &, like this.
    data: string type string.
    string = 'This is the first part ' & 'This is the second part'.
    Again, this will not work with variables.

  • How to map a custom enum list to a custom form property in an extended incident class

    Hi,
    I'm struggeling to understand how to map a custom enum list to a custom form property in an extended incident class.
    Here's what i want to have happen:
    I am going to publish a request offering on my SMPortal for allowing users to submit basic IT incidents. I want the form to include "Whom does this problem affect" (answers(This is the custom enum list): Me, Multiple Users, Whole department or Whole
    company), "What is the problem about", "Description" and "Attachments".
    Here's what i've done:
    In the authoring tool i created a MP for the custom enum list and put only the list in it. I sealed the MP and imported it.
    I created another unsealed MP called TST.Incident.Library for storing incident library customizations and extended the incident class to add an extension class i called ClassExtension_Affected scope with a custom property i called AffectedScope. Then i am trying
    to set the datatype of this property to "list". In the "select a list" dialog i cannot chose my previously sealed MP with the custom enum list in it. Why?
    - Do i need to scratch the sealed MP and put the custom enum list in the latter TST.Incident.Library MP instead?
    - If so, can i do that and keep this MP unsealed, or will i get an error on import saying "Unsealed management packs should not contain type definitions"
    - Should i create one sealed MP for both the custom enum list and the extension class + custom property?

    Hi,
    Authoring Tool simply isn't informed about your list. Open the sealed management pack where you define the root of the list in the Authoring Tool and in the same time open TST.Incident.Library. You will have two opened MPs in the Authoring
    Tool and be able to add a custom list for your custom field.
    Cheers,
    Marat

  • Get Digit String Step on UCCX 8.0.2

    Hello,
    I'm using the "Get Digit String" step to prompt callers for their account number.  I am using this step to collect account numbers from Spanish speaking callers.  I have created a spanish prompt asking the callers for their account number and am playing that when the call enters the "Get Digit String" step. I have also configured the "Timeout" and "Unsuccessful" steps to also play Spanish prompts before sending the call to the next step in the strip. The problem that I'm having is that if I don't enter a number, after the initial prompt, I hear a message, in English, that says "Are you still there" and then I'm prompted to enter my account number again.  How do I change the "Are you still there" message to a Spanish message?  Can this even be done?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    If you modify the system prompt, chances are in the future an upgrade can overwrite your recording. What you should do is set your retry and timeout counts to 0, put an increment node and increment an int variable, and use an if statement to check the index of that int to see how many times you retied. Within the timeout and and unsuccessful node put an audio file there to represent each message.

  • How to Convert the Stream of strings into ArrayList Integer

    I have a String st = "12 54 456 76ASD 243 646"
    what I want to do is print it like this from the ArrayList<Integer>:
    12
    54
    456
    243
    646
    It should catch the "76ASD" exception as it contain String Character.
    This is how I am doing, which it seems to work but when it reaches the 76ASD it catches the exception so it is not adding the rest to the Arraylist, therefore I could not print in sequence.
      public static void main(String[] args) {
            // TODO code application logic here
            getDatas(testString);
            for (int i = 0; i < at.size(); ++i) {
                System.out.println(at.get(i));
        private static ArrayList<Integer> getDatas(String aString) {
            StringTokenizer st = new StringTokenizer(aString);
            try {
                while (st.hasMoreTokens()) {
                    String sts = "";
                    sts = st.nextToken();
                    at.add(Integer.parseInt(sts));
            } catch (Exception e) {
                System.out.println("Error: " + e);
            return at;
        }Please guide me where I am going
    Thanks

    This is one of the few cases where I'd say catching an exception as part of the design is acceptable. When parsing, either something parses, or it doesn't. Using parseInt, we're parsing the string and using the result of the parse. By using a regular expression, we're parsing it twice, in two different ways, which may get out of sync. Not only that, if you have a more complicated case, like negative numbers and decimals, the regex gets really ugly.
    I agree this is exactly the case where it is appropriate to try, catch, handle, move on. I sometimes wish there were an Integer.isValid(String) method, but even if there were, we'd call it, and if it returned true, we'd then call parseInt anyway, which would repeat the same work that isValid did. All it would buy us would be an if test instead of a try/catch.

  • Get Digit String issue

    Hey Team, I am looking for the proper way to do this if the way I am doing it is not correct.
    I use a get digit string and play a menu prompt to a caller
    Press 1
    Press 2
    Press 3
    Etc...
    But if the caller presses a 5 digit code they get a super secret special menu.  All this works great.  When i do the debug I see the digits being passed to the sCED variable I use.  99% of all callers are not pressing the pound key after thier key press so the get digit string timeout brance gets used.
    I have fixed this in two ways.  I use an if statement in the timeout to check if sCED has a value I then send it to another if statement for routing to the various menu options.
    THe out way I fixed this is I just send every call which hits the time out on to be processed and evaluated.
    Am I doing this correctly?  It all works fine but I wanted to make sure there are no gotchas or better ways to accomplish this.
    Having the caller pass both a single digit and 5 digits is why I use the get digit string instead of a menu step.
    See screen shot.  Thanks in advance for any feedback.
    Go Butler Bulldogs!!

    A couple of suggestions in the form of pseudo code (all in the name of effeciency):
    label main_menu_resetset counter = 0label main_menuced = get digit string(timeout 3 sec, inter-digit 1 sec, no terminating or cancel digit, no retries)  successful    label main_menu_success    if (ced == super_secret_key)      true        goto super_secret_section      false    switch (ced)      case "1"        /* do menu option 1 tasks */      case N        /* do menu option N tasks */      default        goto main_menu_failure  timeout    goto main_menu_success  unsuccessful    label main_menu_failure    play prompt (invalid)    if (++counter > maximum)      true        goto customer_service      false        play prompt (try_again)        goto main_menu
    Questions to ask yourself about your approach and this new approach:
    How many steps do I have in this solution (not counting branches)?
    How many steps for best case scenario execution?
    "" worst case scenario?
    How easy is it to change the super secret key (and length of key)?
    How easy is it to add/remove menu options (steps required to add)?
    At how many points are you addressing the failures in your menu?
