How to Properly Convert 23.98 to 29.97?

Hi All,
I need some help doing a frame rate conversion with respect to timecode (don't care about video quality). What I'm trying to do is emulate the conversion done by a HDCAM SR deck to a Digibeta deck.
From what I understand, in a deck-to-deck conversion, the hours, minutes, & seconds always remain the same...only the frames per second change. So if I were to shuttle to 01:30:00:00 on both the HDSR and the digibeta, they would be on the same frame.
However, I'm not sure how to emulate this conversion in Final Cut? If I throw a 23.98 QT into a 29.97 sequence, the timecode drifts out of sync over time. How can I set up my sequence so the timecodes match up to that of a deck-to-deck conversion?
Thanks!

The doesn't seem to add a pulldown...it just recounts each frame into the new frame rate, thus changing the length of the clip. How can I add a pulldown in FCP?
<
Humbly suggest you're doing something wrong then.
This is what Cinema Tools is made for but, umm, I've never had to use it.
I got this from the manual
<div class="jive-quote">
Adding and Removing Pull-Down in 24p Clips
Cinema Tools and Final Cut Pro have pull-down removal and addition features that
address issues specific to working with 24p video. Pull-down, as first mentioned in
“Frame Rate Basics” on page 22, is a process that adds redundant fields to video in
order to distribute 24 frames per second into the NTSC standard of 29.97 frames per
second. Some camcorders, such as the Panasonic AG-DVX100, are designed to shoot in
progressive mode at 24 fps (literally 23.98 fps), and then record the video to tape as a
60-field interlaced signal by applying a special kind of pull-down called advanced
2:3:3:2 pull-down. With Final Cut Pro or Cinema Tools, you can remove the redundant
fields created by the camera’s pull-down, so that you can edit at 23.98 fps or 24 fps.
When you edit 23.98 fps video, you may need to output it to an NTSC monitor, record it
to an NTSC videotape, or send it to another type of NTSC device. Because the NTSC
standard specifies a frame rate of 29.97 fps, Final Cut Pro gives you a way to add
pull-down back into the video as you output it. To accommodate various circumstances,
Final Cut Pro provides a few different types of pull-down patterns for outputting your
23.98 fps video as 29.97 fps video: 3:2 pull-down, 2:3:3:2 pull-down, and 2:2:2:4 pull-down.
(These pull-down patterns are described in “Pull-Down Patterns You Can Apply to
23.98 fps Video” on page 215.) <
Good luck with tis project, doesn't look lik enay fun to be learning up against a deadline or to be forced to conform someone else's stuff.

    I have a several AI files that need to be converted to pdf. I now that I can just save as PDF under File, but the will save with current defaults.
    My files consist of vector images and photoshop images pds files.
    How do I convert to PDF with out losing quality but decresing the size, ready for online use (to download).

    >Turn off Optimize for Fast Web View,
    I don't know about that, have you had a bad experience with doing this?
    If you save in Acrobat 7 or 8 you can also reduce the files size by going to Document>Reduce Document Size, which eliminates things that are left from conversion but have nothing to do with output. Sometimes saves a lot of size sometimes just a small amount.

  • How to properly convert from LV2009f3 to LV8.5.1

    Hello,
    I have a fairly large project for an AOI which was initially developed in LV8.2 and later ported up to v8.5.
    The project has a Windows and an FPGA target and relies heavily on NI Vision and IMAQ for the inspection parts of the application.
    I recently decided to jump to LV 2009f3 for the new generation of the machines. I added a lot of functionality and minor bug fixes and prepared the code to work on various generations of the machine by using Conditional Diagram Disable structures and Conditional Disable Symbols.
    The problem is that I need to go back to v8.5 to compile the executable and make sure that it will work on the older systems with LV and Vision 8.5 runtimes.
    First I tried to save the entire project to version 8.5 but failed after multiple attempts: I always get a 'Memory Full' error with the same VI, which is the first in the project that accesses Vision functions. When I save the projecto to version 8.6 this error doesn't occur.
    I concluded that this first situation is related to saving from 2009 to 8.5 when you use Vision functions.
    I was able to get to version 8.5 by saving the project from version 8.6 to 8.5. The fact that you need an intermediate step is apparently well known in the forums as a bug in LV2009.
    But my real problems are starting now. I currently have all the files saved as version 8.5. NOTE: the project could not be saved, but I managed to recover a version 8.5 project from my old code and used that, because the file structures were kept intact.
    My current issues are with the VI's that call Vision and FPGA functions/nodes. They will ALWAYS crash: the vision related VI's crash during loading with the infamous 'Memory Full' error, while the FPGA related VI's crash during loading with the 'FPSANE.CPP' error. The 'Memory Full' error is related to nivision.dll.
    I'm unable to open the VI's so I'm not sure what to do now.
    Is there any way to "properly" save such a large project from 2009 to LV8.5? What toolkits and/or picture versions should I choose when LV asks me during the 'save for previous' operation? Has anyone experienced the same issues? How did you solve them?
    Please help me. I don't know what to do.
    On a side note, the VI's for the FPGA target opened without any trouble and I was able to compile the VI's into a bitfile without any hassle. Why so many problems with the Host target VI's?

    Hi James,
    Thank you for your reply.
    Regarding your suggestion, I've been trying just that. I have a dual boot on my machine with Win7 + LV 2009f3 and WinXP + LV 8.5.1
    Inside Win7 I have a WinXP virtual machine that runs LV 8.6. So in fact it's just like I used 3 different machines to do the porting, so that should not be the issue.
     I have also created a virtual machine from the original WinXP + LV 2009 installation on the AOI machine to be able to continue developing on my laptop without having the typical file paths and add-on/driver version issues that one usually has in these situations. So I'm all set regarding this.
    I'm only having these issues because I want to go back to LV 8.5.1 to do maintenance on an older machine.
    Another valuable piece of information is that the VI are not really corrupted.  They will open fine in LV 8.6 or 2009. Only not in 8.5.1...
    What I'm going to try now is to open the project in a clean install of LV 8.5.1 but without the Vision and FPGA modules installed.
    Maybe this way instead of the before mentioned errors and crashes, LV will only complain about missing VI and CTLs.
    This will take some time so in the meantime I really appreciate more help.
    Best regards,

  • How to properly convert 1920x1080 graphic for DVD SP

    I have a PSD file created at 1920x1080 for an HD project.
    I'd like to use this same image, with layers, for a DVD SP standard def DVD menu.
    I was wondering if anyone could point me to the proper procedure to make this conversion.
    One thing I do know is that DVD Sp is not great at converting images to different sizes. I've read that in many places. So I want to do that in Photshop.
    I'm just not sure on the steps to take to make a 864x480 image so it still looks good in DVD SP.
    For example, the 1920x1080 is square pixels. Do I simply convert this to non-square and then resize the image to 864 x 480, and then resize again to 720x480 to create an anamorphic image?
    Or is there a better way?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    If your DVD is using a 16:9 aspect ratio for menus, the graphic will look fine as both the graphic and the new menu share the same aspect ratio. If the menus were to be 4:3, then you would be looking for less simple solutions (unless it did not matter if the images were stretched vertically.)
    Have fun.

  • How do you convert the encoder counts to RMP of the motor using a myRIO in LabVIEW?

    My intent is to gain hardware interfacing and general Labview experience. I am using a myRIO to control a Pittman 8222 34V Brushed DC motor (Motor Specs).
    I recently created a code to control the angle of this motor using PID, which was visually implemented using the black disc with a white tick mark on it (see attached picture: "IMG_2523").
    I now want to control the speed of this motor againg using PID, but I am not sure how to properly convert the encoder counts to RPM of this motor. I have attached 2 screen shots of my block diagram and my front panel for reference ("Capture" and "Capture2"). In the front panel picture, you can see my "actual" speed of the motor is a very choppy signal when it should theoretically be a flat line. To get the RPM, I currently use a shift register to store the current count value (which I converted to deg, then to radians), and then subtract the previous run's value, then divide by the while loop sampling time (10 ms). This would give me rad/s, which I then wrote a subVI to convert it to rpm.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

    Hi,
    One thing you could try doing is verifying that the conversion from rad/s to rpm is working correctly.
    This tutorial might also be helpful. It's not using the same hardware that you are, but goes through the general steps using PID control.

  • How do you convert channels.dvb to channels.conf

    Title says is all. How do you convert the kaffeine file channels.dvb to a channels.conf file which can be used by mplayer.
    The winterhill transmitter in the UK is now totally digital, since the change over I've not been able to get BBC channels properly in mplayer. The receiver is a Freecom DVB-T USB. I've manually edited the uk-WinterHill file with the transmitter info to update it and used it to create a channels.conf file.
    scan /usr/share/dvb/dvb-t/uk-WinterHill > /home/~/channels.conf
    This picked up pretty much all the channels & I can tune into BBC channels but receive no picture. I've googled a bit and it seems other people have this problem too and they think it's a problem due to the increased power of the signal after the change over to digital. I've tried a variable attenuator which did no good.
    I've now found that kaffeine can scan for and find the BBC channels AND it can also play them back properly. So the theory about the signal strength being too much for the freecom sticks attenuator is probably a load of guff, at least in my case.
    The data for BBC One from the kaffeine channels.dvb is:-
    TV|BBC ONE|101(2)|102(eng),106(eng),|0|4168|4168|Terrestrial|802000|0|v|-1|-1|-1|-1|8|-1|-1|-1|45|105(16)(1)(1)(eng),||9018|-1|0|
    The same data from the mplayer/scan channels.conf is:-
    BBC ONE:802000000:INVERSION_AUTO:BANDWIDTH_8_MHZ:FEC_2_3:FEC_AUTO:QAM_64:TRANSMISSION_MODE_8K:GUARD_INTERVAL_1_32:HIERARCHY_NONE:101:102:4168
    I really don't want to keep kaffeine installed and any links or info that would help convert these channel data files would be greatly appreciated. Seems there are ways to convert them the other way round, but so far I've found nothing to do it fron channels.dvb to channels.conf

    Do you want to capture a single frame of the video as a separate image? You can play the video full screen in QuickTime, pause it at the appropriate frame and take a screenshot using shift-command-3.

  • How Do I Convert LV7.1 Datalog Files to LV8 Format?

    I have several LabVIEW 7.1 datalog files that generate Error 71 (File data type conflict) when I try to open them in LabVIEW 8 using the new Open/Create/Replace Datalog vi with my original typedef constants wired to the record type terminal.  Likewise, my original LV7.1 code recompiled in LV8 often generates error 116 (unflatten or byte stream read operation failed due to corrupt, unexpected, or truncated data) or error 4 (end of file encountered) when randomly accessing records in the LV7 datalog files, presumably due to changes made to the datalog file structure in LV8.  I recall one time when a dialog box popped up asking if I would like to convert the file to LV8 format.  Since this was a file currently in use on the server by LV7.1 clients, I had to reply no.  With copies of the datalog files now on my hard drive ready for conversion, I haven't seen the conversion dialog box pop up again.
    How do I convert the LV7.1 datalog files to LV8 format?
    Thanks,
    Larry

    Good afternoon Larry,
    Thanks for posting!
    The Datalog file support in LabVIEW has changed, but the underlying
    principles of the technology remains the same.
    Converting to the new format should just involve converting a few VIs to the new Datalog-specific versions.  As you can see, the new Datalog VIs appear in
    their own sub palette in 8 which will help keep things simple.
    Before we address the concerns with the errors, let’s first
    make sure that the code has been properly converted.
    To convert your VI to the new format:
    1)      Replace
    the Open File VI from LabVIEW 7 with an “Open/Create/Replace Datalog” VI in LabVIEW
    8.  Keep your type constant or control
    wired to the “Datalog Type” input.
    2)      Replace
    any “Write File” VIs in LabVIEW 7 with “Write
    Datalog” and triple check that your data matches the datatype wired into the
    open exactly.
    3)      Replace
    any “Seek” VIs with “Set Datalog Position”.  The input to this VI is the number of records
    to advance (check the mode set by the “from” parameter).
    4)      Replace
    any Reading VIs with the corresponding “Read Datalog” VI.
    I suspect that if you are receiving errors saying that the
    end of file has been encountered it is a result of a bad input to the “set Datalog
    position” VI.  I attached a basic example
    of writing a Datalog file in LabVIEW 8, and reading the results.  The rest of the functions in the new Datalog palette
    should be pretty straightforward.
    Does this help?  I
    would be more than happy to answer any other questions on this if you need any
    additional clarification, or if this response does not address your question.

    Kodak Digital Camera QuickTime MOV Problems
    After battling a number of serious problems with the videos taken by my new Kodak Digital Camera, I decided to write up this page so that anyone searching the web would find out the true answers without as much grief!
    I’ve also made some other comments about my experience with the camera, in case anyone was considering buying a Kodak camera in the near future.
    I bought the camera just before Christmas 2004 in the US. At the time of writing, it is a pretty good model for domestic use—about 5.2 megapixels, costing about US$400 (or AU$600 back here in Australia). From a company as reputable as Kodak, I expected no problems.
    The first disappointing thing was that the spring inside the spring-loaded battery clip, inside the camera, came loose within days. It proved impossible to reattach it without completely dismantling the camera, which (despite my engineering qualifications) I was not willing to do. This would usually have been a warranty item, but Kodak’s warranty does not extend to other countries. I’ve since had to jam cardboard in to keep the battery clip engaged, and have taped the battery bay shut to avoid it opening accidentally when taking the camera out of the case. This works fine with the docking station (an extra AU$100!), but it means I can no longer charge the battery without the docking station (since you need to take it out to charge it). I was not impressed!
    The camera takes good photos, and I have no complaint with that. The controls and camera menus are well-designed. The large display is excellent.
    The EasyShare software is not as easy to use as it looks, has a habit of crashing, has a web update program that is always running in the background of Windows, and transferring images is nowhere as easy or quick as it should be. I’ve now uninstalled it completely, and simply copy the photos directly from the device. (If the camera memory is nearly full, and you just want to transfer the last few photos, then it’s impossible to use the EasyShare software to browse the camera’s photos without it actually downloading the whole lot through the USB cable—and it takes forever! Copying from the device directly doesn’t hit this bug.)
    The capability to take video using the camera was a great attraction when I selected it, and, if it worked properly, it would make it quite a handy little camcorder in its own right. With a 512 MB memory card in it, over an hour of video can be recorded at Video-CD quality (320 x 240 24fps video, 8 kHz audio). It’s not full digital video, but it would still be a pretty good feature for a US$400 camera. If it worked.
    The first disappointing thing about taking videos is that the optical zoom cannot be adjusted while the camera is recording. It can only be adjusted between video sequences. I don’t know why this restriction was made in the design.
    The real problems, however, start when you try to do anything with the video clips captured by the camera. Kodak has chosen to capture the videos in QuickTime format. This is fine—QuickTime is, technically, excellent—except that there is no simple way to convert QuickTime MOV files to AVI or MPEG or VCD. The Kodak software comes with a QuickTime player, so you can see the video clips on the computer you installed the software on—and they look good. Problem is that you can’t just dump those MOV files onto your Video-CD creator (it will usually want AVI or MPEG files).
    It takes some time to realise that Kodak have not even bothered to include any software with the camera that can convert these MOV files to a more useful format. This is a serious PR blunder, and anyone bitten by this is unlikely to go near the Kodak brand ever again.
    After some web searching, owners of these cameras generally find that the best (only?) freeware solution to convert MOV to AVI is Bink and Smacker’s RADtools program.
    RADtools is amazingly powerful for the price (i.e. free), but it hits two fundamental problems with Kodak Digital Camera MOV video files, that are the fault of the Kodak camera, not RADtools. (I know this because every other MOV converter hits the same problems—except one, as you will see below.)
    The first problem is that the sound cannot be converted properly. When you convert any Kodak MOV files, there is an “aliasing” of the sound at the upper frequencies. This is a technical description—you get a whispery, tinny, C3PO type of echo to everything. It really destroys the quality of the video clips (especially bad when I am trying to capture priceless memories of my 4- and 7-year-old sons—I don’t want their voices destroyed for all time).
    Every conversion program I tried ended up with the same audio problem. I concluded that it is something strange in the way the Kodak cameras store the MOV files.
    Strangely enough, I noticed that the QuickTime player didn’t distort the audio like this. The audio sounds just fine through QuickTime. More on this shortly.
    The second, more serious problem is that RADtools could not properly convert some of the video clips at all. (This problem only affected less than 10% of the clips I originally filmed, but most of those clips were very short—less than 20 seconds. It seems that the probability of this problem gets worse, the longer the clip.) RADtools would misreport the number of frames in the clip, and would stretch out a small number of frames of video (in slow motion) to match the length of the audio.
    Again, I confirmed that this is a property of some of the MOV files stored by the camera. Other conversion tools also had problems with the same MOV clips.
    After more angst, I found a number of websites in which frustrated owners of these Kodak cameras have reported the exact same problems.
    It was only then that I discovered that QuickTime itself can convert MOV files to AVI. Believe it or not, it’s built into the QuickTime Player that Kodak supplies, or that you can download free from apple.com. The problem is that you can’t use it unless you pay Apple to upgrade to QuickTime Pro.
    After realising that this would probably be the only way to get decent audio for these clips, I paid the AU$59 to Apple Australia to get the licence key that enables the extra “Pro” menu options in QuickTime.
    Sure enough, you can “Export” any MOV file to a number of formats, including AVI. And guess what? The audio comes out fine!
    So, the first piece of advice I can give is: pay Apple the US$29 (or whatever amount it is in your country) to upgrade QuickTime to QuickTime Pro.
    From here, however, there are still a few snags to untangle.
    The first is that the default settings for Exporting to AVI don’t give a great result. It defaults to the Cinepak codec, medium quality. This looks terrible compared to the original QuickTime movie. Even on maximum quality, that codec just doesn’t give good results.
    I finally found that the best option is to use the Intel Indeo Video 4.4 codec, set on maximum quality. This creates AVI files that are 10 to 20 times larger than the original MOV files, but the quality is there. If (like me) you only want the AVI files so you can dump them into your Video-CD program, then you want to keep the quality as high as possible in this first step. The extra hard disk space is not really a concern. When your VCD program converts the AVI files to MPEG, it will compress them to the usual VCD size.
    Now for the biggest snag: those problem MOV files are still a problem, even for QuickTime Pro. Unbelievably, these Kodak cameras are spitting out MOV files which have some sort of technical flaw in their data specifications. QuickTime is able to play them back fine—and that seems to be all that the Kodak engineers really checked. However, if QuickTime Pro tries to export them, then when the progress bar gets to the end, it never finishes. It just keeps going. If you check the output folder with Explorer, and keep hitting F5 to update the file listing, you can see the file getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger. It never stops.
    That this happens even for QuickTime itself (the native format for these files) confirms that the problem is with the software built into these Kodak cameras. It would be nice it they issued a patch or a fix. I couldn’t find one.
    Fortunately, there is a “workaround” for this problem. I found it when trolling the net trying to find solutions to all these problems. The workaround is to use QuickTime Pro’s cut and paste facility. Open the problem MOV file, then press Ctrl-A (the standard key combination for “select all”—in this case it selects the entire film clip, as you can see by the grey selection of frames at the bottom of the player). Then hit Ctrl-C (i.e. copy, which in this case copies all the frames, but not the incorrect data structure in the original MOV file). Now hit Ctrl-N (i.e. new, in this case a new MOV file or player). In this new player, press Ctrl-V (i.e. paste). Now you have a new version of the MOV file with the bad data structure exorcised. You can save this under a new name, but make sure you specify “Make movie self-contained”—otherwise, it will simply be a link to the original (bad) MOV file, which you are probably going to delete once you save the exorcised version. (You also cannot overwrite the original file, because it needs to access that to make the “self-contained” movie. You need to give it a slightly different name, save it “self-contained”, then delete the original and rename the new copy back to what you wanted it to be. A pain, I agree, but at least the **** thing works—finally!)
    The exorcised MOV file can now be used to Export to AVI format. (I also keep all the MOV files on a separate CD, in case I want to reconvert them to a different format in the future. I figure it’s better keeping the exorcised ones than the haunted ones.)
    So I hope that all this answers a few of your questions. No, you weren’t being incredibly stupid.

  • How do you convert PAL audio to NTSC?

    I have converted a PAL video to NTSC but the audio was mixed separately and so it's still set at 25fps and hence becomes out of sync when I lay it against the video track.
    So how do I convert the separate audio.aiff files from 25fps to 30fps?
    Thx
    Kevin

    I think you are barking up the wrong tree...
    Let's say you have a 10 second clip of PAL material:
    10 seconds x 25 fps = 250 frames
    If properly converted to NTSC:
    10 seconds x 30 fps = 300 frames
    The only difference is the number of frames, NOT THE LENGTH OF THE CLIP! It is still 10 seconds long.
    10 seconds of audio x 44.1 kHz = 441 thousand samples
    or
    10 seconds of audio x 48 kHz = 480 thousand samples
    or
    10 seconds of audio at 22.05 kHz = 220.5 thousand samples
    The only difference is the number of samples. NOT THE LENGTH OF THE AUDIO. It is still 10 seconds long.
    If you have drift, then there is something wrong in your conversion. You can't take a 25 fps clip, tell it to play at 30 fps and expect it to be the same length. There are multi-thousand $$$ transcoders that do that job.

    The application Acrobat provides no language translation capability.
    If you localize the language for OS, MS Office applications, Acrobat, etc to the desired language try again.
    Alternative: transfer a copy of content into a web based translation service (Bing or Google provides a free service).
    Transfer the output into a word processing program that is localized to the appropriate language.

  • How can I convert an InputStream to a FileInputStream ???

    How can I convert an InputStream to a FileInputStream ???

    Thanks for you reply, however, I am still stuck.
    I am trying to convert my application (which runs smoothly) to a signed applet. The following is the original (application) code:
    private void loadConfig() {
    String fileName = "resources/groupconfig";
    File name = new File(fileName);
    if(name.isFile()) {
    try {
         ObjectInputStream in = new ObjectInputStream(new FileInputStream(fileName));
         pAndGConfig = (PAGroupsConfig)in.readObject();
         in.close();
         return;
    } catch(ClassNotFoundException e) {
         System.err.println("++ERROR: "+e);
    } catch(IOException e) {
         System.err.println("++ERROR: "+e);
    System.out.println("Can't find file: " + fileName);
    Because all code and resources now reside in a Jar file (for the signed applet), I must use the following line to access the resources:
    InputStream is = this.getClass().getResourceAsStream(fileName);
    I then need to convert the 'InputStream' to 'ObjectInputStream' or 'FileInputStream' so that I can work with it.
    I would be very grateful if you could help shed some light on the matter - Cobram

    Hello everybody!
      Can someone explain how I can convert a garageband file (voice speech) into a text? My Mac is a Mac OS X 10.5.8 version, so I don't have programs such as mountain Lion. I thought to use googlevoice. Is this option available? If yes, how can I use it?
    Thanks.

    "I just signed up for .Mac. How do I convert my existing iTunes account to
    my new .Mac account?
    We'll be happy to convert your account for you. Please provide your old account name, your new .Mac account name and your billing address in your email. We will also need your explicit permission to reset your password to complete the conversion."
    This is the URL where I found those INSTRUCTIONS:

    I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS ABOVE!
    I am now on my fifth exchange of emails with iTunes support.
    HAS ANYBODY SUCCESSFULLY EXECUTED THESE INSTRUCTIONS? I don't want to lose the ability to play my existing purchased music, but I want to close down Earthlink as my ISP.
