How to publish a calendar to webdav (ical) server

I have a Xserve running ical server, but when a user tries to publish a personal calendar on their desktop to the webdav service on the Xserve, it's prompting for a directory path.
What directory we put there? Everything we've tried doesn't work.

There is a difference between sharing and publishing. The latter means getting your calendar to display as an ordinary web page: firstly this cannot be done with a calendar listed under iCloud (this was also true with MobileMe) but only if it's listed under 'On My Mac'. The facility is still available in iCal for such calendars, but the problem is that it has to be published to a CalDav server because MobileMe, which used to take the published files and turn it into a web page, is not longer available. It's assumed in the Help that you are going to be running such a server yourself, which obviously requires a fair standard of technical knowledge. It's been claimed that Box.net can do this but I've seen complaints that it doesn't work.
Sharing, which you can do with iCloud calendars, makes the calendars available for others to subscribe to in a CalDAV client - iCal itself is such a client, and you can also do this with Google calendar - this does require the recipient to have a Google account. The process with iCloud is described in this page and the pages following:

  • How do I restore calendars in Lion iCal Server? Where are the files?

I am ready to pull my hair out.
I am an Apple Consultant as well.  However, Apple's choice to move to a postgres database without proper management tools is astounding.
So, Apple makes a dump file every night into /Library/Server/PostgreSQL/Backup.
Note from the Advaced Admin help doc on apple.com:
"Calendar event data is stored in a postgres database, with some support files in the file system.
This is different from Snow Leopard Server, where all calendar data files were stored on the file system. Now only attachments and the proxy database are stored on the file system. All other calendar data is stored in a database.
When backing up calendar server files, make sure to back up the /Library/Server/Calendar and Contacts/ directory and the postgres databases.
    Database files
iCal Server uses database files for various purposes. It uses a postgres database to store calendar data. It uses sqlite files to store proxy relationships. To troubleshoot or resolve problems, an administrator needs to use postgres database queries. Teaching postgres database manipulation is beyond the scope of this topic.
To access the database, you need to use postgres and pg_ctl command-line tools."
I had a server crash at a client, and after TWO-THREE HOURS on phone with AppleCare Enterprise support, they said it would need an $895 support agreement to restore the calendars.  YET APPLE'S BUILDS IN THE BACKUP, BUT NOT THE RESTORE??
Yes, Time Machine has been working.
Anyone else have any bright ideas?

Thanks for catching that. I didn't notice my signature. No, I'm running 10.8.1 and have everything updated to the very latest versions.
I'm syncing many calendars to iCloud now, but there are about 10 that are not. They're still listed as "On My Mac" and I need to move them to iCloud.

  • How to publish multiple calendars into .mac?

There doesn't seem to be an option to publish multiple calendars to .mac. Is ther ea way that I can have all my calendars in one ical (.mac) view? I don't want to have multiple ical pages online.
    thanks

There is no way to maintain separate source calendars on a Macintosh desktop or portable machine and publish a single, unified calendar using .Mac or a WebDAV server. It simply does not work that way.

  • Publish calendar to WebDav enabled server.

I am trying to publish a calendar to my hosting companies' server. The server apparently is WebDav enabled. Though when I click the publish button in iCal I get this message:
    "Publish failed for calendar Production"
"Access to the calendar http://[email protected]/Production.ics is not permitted."
My hosting company swears the server is WebDav enabled. Also I triple checked the login information.
Any idea what could be the problem?

I have a similar situation going on now with Spymac's servers. Are you running Tiger? When I upgraded to Tiger, I started having the same problem. Here's what I have to do to fix it.
Let's say, for example, I was trying to publish your calendar. Here's what the link would look like:
    http://[email protected]:81/Production.ics
Notice the ":81". For some reason, Tiger seems to be having problems handling the addresses of calendars not on .Mac, where as Panther wasn't a problem.
I hope this gives you some ideas.

  • How do I remove calendars or even ical?

    Hello all.
Ical is currently driving me up a tree. I have an iphone 3gs on ios4, iphone 4 and ipad 1 both on ios5 and a mbp on lion. Syncing via icloud is turned OFF. Sncing (for the sake of the 3GS) via mobileme is turned OFF. There is no timemachine on a wireless system anywhere.
So, I delete all calendars on the ipad once I've set it in airplane mode. They stay deleted. iphone, same on both.
The MBP is a whole diferent story. The calendars sitting in the group On My Mac keep bouncing back in multiples. I delete them all (bar one) and they come back. I delete again and they come back. In subscriptions i ave 5 subscriptions to birthdays. I delete those, they bounce back in. I go to ical>prefs and untick the "show birthdays" and it bounces back in a couple of seconds later. Untick again and it's back again on it's own. And so it goes.
I've tried deleting the entire ical application - says lion needs it.
I've tried deleteing it in terminal as root and it dissapears but guess what - IT COMES BACK! It's like a bad horror movie where you can't get rid of the monster.
What do I have to do to clear my ical from all the multiple duplicates of calendars and subscriptions that seem to be breeding and generating more calendars and subscriptions? Do I really have to do a clean install of the entire mac and all ios units?
    Please help!
    Thanks in advance

Hi, let's see if I can get you out of there ;-)
Please try in Finder: Menu "Go to", choose "Go to folder" and type ~/library. After hitting Return, you'll see the contents of that folder. Look up "Calendars". Since you do not want to keep anything in iCal you may take all files/directories located in "Calendars" and drop them in the bin. Before doing so, you might want to cancel any subscription to public calendars from within iCal: Go to the list of calendars on the top-left of the main window, ctrl-click on any entry under "Subscriptions" and choose delete.
    Good luck,
    Norbert

  • New Outlook 2013 User Unable to Publish default Calendar to WebDAV server

We have a new user. Created new Active Domain account, made domain account administrator on local machine and setup Outlook 2013 with our Go Daddy pop and smtp email settings.
Email messaging works fine.  When I try and share the default calendar there is no dialogue box for our WebDAV server.  Again, I right click the default calendar and see "Share", "Publish to a WebDAV Server..." but
nothing after that.  The box for the server location and sharing details just does not come up.
I created a new calendar and can share that.  A copy of the default calendar can be published, but not the default calendar itself.
    Any ideas?

Was able to finally get the default calendar to publish. Seems that it had something to do with how many shared calendars the user was subscribed to. The user had accepted about a dozen calendar invitations.
Deleting the calendar subscriptions allowed the default calendar to publish to the WebDAV server.

  • How to publish a servlet class to web server?

    background:
    web server: tomcat apache 4
    context path: webapp\test\
    servlet path: webapp\test\WEB-INF
    servlet name: HelloWorld.class
i tried to placed the servlet class file to above servlet path,
but i can't invoke the servlet by http://localhost:8080/test/HelloWorld
what should i do in order to invoke the servlet at browser?
Is a web.xml necessary a must to provided a mapping between request name and actual class name?

First of all you need a *.war structure which look like this
    /app-name
    /app-name/WEB-INF/
    /app-name/WEB-INF/lib
    /app-name/WEB-INF/classes
When you have created this structure you add your servlet (HelloWorld.class) in the classes directory (Create the package structure first).
When this is done you need to map the servlet to a given uri which is done in the web.xml. An example is found below:
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>hello</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>package.HelloWorld</servlet-class>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>hello</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/hello/*</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    Hopefully this will help :-)
    best regards
    Stig

  • Publish calendar from OS X server

We run a OS X server on 10.8.5 with 20+ users on it. We mainly share folders. Our users sign up at the servers LDAP directory and most of them use mobile accounts.
Actually we set up the calendar server function. Each user connects iCal at its Mac and iPhone to our server by CalDAV.
We use the sharing functionality to share our calendars with each other internal.
Now we want to publish some of these calenders to be able to share them with others like subscribing to external calendars. We know how to publish local calendars with the "publish"-function. But how can we do this on server stored calendars connected by CalDAV? Is there any functionality done at the server for publish to our WebDAV-Server?
Any hint is welcome, thanks in advance.

  • Publishing desktop calendar to Mobile Me : error message

Hi, I have been trying to publish a calendar created by ICal which is in my "On my Mac" folder and not in " XXXX Mac"to my Mobile Me account. These are all the messages I am getting, but I can't figure out what the problem is.
FYI, I am using OS X 10.6.8, and ICal version 4.0.4. I have also NOT yet moved from Mobile Me to Cloud (could this be the problem??).
Here are the steps I have taken :
in ICal, selected calendar I want  >> Publish
    >>>> Publish Calendar as "xxxxx"
    >>>> Publish on : MOBILE ME..... OK
Then I get this error message :
** Your MobileMe account configuration is not correct"... Your MobileMe subscription information is not correct.... To configure your subscription, use MobileMe preferences ***
    In MobileMe preferences :
Account : access ok (ID ok, password ok)
Sync : Automatic (OK).... If I select "sync" now my computer correctly syncs with MobileMe.
    Idisk : all OK
Back to my mac : OFF
    Back to ICal :
Preferences >>> Accounts .... the "accounts" page is empty, so i select *+* to create a new CalDAV account
Account type : MobileMe / Automatic (I have tried both options, I get the same error message : see below)
    Email & password : OK
Message : Searching for calendar accounts for the email address you provided...
    >>> Configuring CalDAV account
    >>> Error Message : "the account information was not found. The server has not specified a calendar home for the account at "/--https://cal.me.com/".
I keep selecting the the option "Create" and keep getting the same error message.
*** CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT THIS LAST ERROR MESSAGE MEANS, AND HOW I CAN RESOLVE IT?
FIY, The regular sync between my computer and MobileMe works fine ; the problem I am having is publishing this "external" calendar.
Thank you very much for your help,

    Re MobileMe
I was going to uninstall but a little wary, on your advice I took the plunge and hey presto it worked.
Many many thanks b noir it was driving me crazy.

  • Does availability only work w/ iCal Server calendars?

We have enabled iCal Server in the hopes that it will solve our meeting coordination problems, but it looks like the iCal / iCal Server combo don't perform as you'd expect when looking at attendee availability for new events.
As far as I can tell, events on your local calendars don't block out time on the availability window -- only events on server calendars (CalDAV) do. So if I have a doctor's appointment at 10am tomorrow on my personal, local calendar, and someone at work is trying to set up a meeting with me, they will see that time block as open. Only if I set up a personal calendar on the company iCal Server, and put the event on that hosted calendar, would they see that 10am was blocked.
I've tested this several ways with a few different test calendars on the server, and it looks like this is so. There's a checkbox "events affect availability" when you right-click on the hosted calendars, but that option does not appear on the local ones.
We want to encourage adoption of iCal using iCal Server to improve coordination at our company, but I doubt that few if any will put their personal calendars on the company server.
Are we doing something wrong here? Or is this really a (giant) limitation of iCal?
This is using iCal 3.0.4 from the OS 10.5.4 update, and iCal Server 10.5.3.

Ok, I guess I think I found the answers in the iPhone Users Guide on the Support site.
If I understand correctly, it appears that iCal Server Calendars are considered read-only on iPhone. You can only accept meeting requests? I assume this because in the snippet below it says that "Subscribed Calendars" are read-only.
This is from the iPhone User Guides under the "Calendar" section:
    Subscribing to Calendars
You can subscribe to calendars that use the iCalendar (.ics) format. Many calendar- based services support calendar subscriptions, including Yahoo!, Google, and the Mac OS X iCal application.
Subscribed calendars are read-only. You can read events from subscribed calendars on iPhone, but you can’t edit them or create new events.
So, it appears I can't use the iCal Server as intended. I wanted to store the calendars in one location using the Calendar server. I originally had this all working by publishing the calendars to my apache server with WebDAV enabled. I thought I could get rid of that and use the Calendar server instead. Appears I was wrong..or am still misundersanding something.
Also, i found out why I didn't have the "Default Calendar" option in Settings. It turns out that you have to have more than one calendar enabled on the phone and they have to writable. So, because I had all server subscribed calendars that option wasn't shown. As soon as i added NON-SERVER calendars that option reappeared.
Is anyone else using the Snow Leopard Calendar server and iPhone?

  • ICal server to android?

I see lots of ways to get a local iCal calendar into the android platform, but how do I get access into the iCal server based calendars? I would also like our droids to be able to access them through our MAS server without resorting to the web interface. I can do this on iOS devices...
    Thanks!

Got to the Android market and search for CalDAV. There are several apps supporting to sync calendars to your Android device.
The one I use at the moment, is Hypermatix "Calendar (CalDAV)" but it's not supported on the latest Android versions and you can't create new calendars, you have to create them with a Google account.
The one I will switch to soon, is DMFS "CalDAV-Sync". This software integrates nicely with the existing Android calendars and you can add new calendars from within the application (they have also a CardDAV application for my addresses).
All software is only usefull if you have a CalDAV server (e.g. iCal on OSX Server)
