How to put a recovery partition on the hard drive

How can I create a recovery partition on the hard drive of my laptop. I had to reinstall the whole system, and tried to use the HP recovery software they sent me but it quit when it was about three quarters the way finished. I had to use a copy of windows 8 to put the system back on my laptop. After I got it all straighten out, I updated it to windows 8.1 and it seems like the computer runs a lot faster with windows 8.1 on it. Now I need to find away to install a recovery partition on my hard drive.
Thank You

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and/or product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
The above requested information can be found on the bottom of the computer or inside the battery compartment. Please do not include the serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and/or post it here for our review.
A Recover partition is something the factory places on the computer. It is an image of the factory installation and the software required to restore the computer to a factory like state using that image. You will not be able to create a Recovery partition on your computer unless you use the HP Recovery Discs to return the computer to a factory like state. Please note the HP Recovery Discs and the resulting HP Recovery partition will only contain an image of Windows 8 that cannot be updated to reflect the installation of Window 8.1.
My suggestion is to use the Windows "System Image Backup" utility to create an exact image of the Windows 8.1 partition as it currently is. If your computer developes an issue or you need to replace the hard drive, all you have to do is "restore" the image to the computer. You will need to use an external USB hard drive or other media to store the image. Please see Windows 8.1 Tip: Use System Image Backup for instructions on creating and storing a "Windows - System Image Backup."

  • How do I install lion and format the hard drive?

How do I install lion and format the hard drive, as though this was a new mac.

If your Mac is a 2011 model and originally came with Lion Pre-Installed by Apple then you can use the Internet Recovery HD system to Wipe/Erase the Complete drive and Re-Install Lion.
If it is an older model, even and early 2011 model, that did NOT come with Lion Pre-Installed by Apple you can not sell or give it away with Lion installed on it. You have to install the original version of OS X on it.

  • How can I erase deleted items from the hard drive?

How can I erase deleted files from the hard drive?  Will my machine run faster?

If you've already deleted the files and emptied the Trash they are already, in effect, erased. At least the disk space they occupied is now available.
To be able to offer help we need more information about which Mac you have, which OS you are running, how much RAM you have installed, how much hard disk space you have available, etc.
Go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac - copy and paste the contents of the report here (deleting the serial number of your machine). Once we have that info, I'm sure someone will have some suggestions.

  • How to fix my mac after erasing the hard drive?

So I decided earlier today that I wanted to reset my Macbook Air (2011 I think) to factory settings. Being me, I didn't do enough research and ended up erasing my hard drive in Disk Utility. I'm not entirely tech savvy, but I erased the hard drive in which Macintosh HD was a partition of. Now, whenever I turn on my computer, there's just a blank screen with a blinking folder with a question mark on it. My mac won't go into recovery mode or anything. Do I have to go out and buy a new OS X disc?

Did your Mac come with a USB stick with the original OS X on it? If so, you could use that.
Check out this page for help on Recovery. OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
Also, if you bought it from an Apple store, best call them for help.
Presumably, you do not have a bootable backup.

  • Start-up disc does not see Yosemite installed in a partition of the hard drive

I have partitioned the hard drive of my macbook pro in two parts
on the first part I use Leopard and many programs for image processing
on the second part I use the latest operating system (now Yosemite) so
that I can back-up my iPhone ,use latest Safari Mail etc.
Up to Mavericks I was able to switch between the two os's just by going
to preferences start-up disc and selecting the partition with the desired os.
not any longer , Leopard's start-up preference cannot detect the Yosemite carrying
partition while when using Yosemite's start-up preference I can see the leopard partition

Reboot with the Option key held down and see if the Yosemite partition is recognized.  If it is boot into it and then Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both the disk permissions and the disk.
When you boot next into Lepoard see if the Yosemite partition is recognized.

  • HT1473 I want to keep my music on my external hard drive to free up room on my computer how do i get itunes to recognise the hard drive to play the music?

I would like to keep all my music on my external hard drive but I can't seem to get itunes to recognise my hard drive.  How do I get itunes to recognise my hard drive so I can play the music off there rather than copying the files over each time?

Click the icon to launch iTunes
Immediately press and hold down the shift key
Keep holding shift until asked to create or choose a library
If iTunes opens normally close and go back to step 1.
Browse to the iTunes Library.itl file you want to open.

My backup is done with Shadow Protect, which as well as providing incremental backups - it adds any changes to the back up every 18 minutes - it also allows you to keep an image of your boot drive.  This image has t be accompanied with a bootable CD, so if your boot drive crashes, you can be up and running again in minutes.  I've never needed that feature, but I have lost two data drives in the last two years, and Shadow Protect came to the rescue both times.  One of thos drives was have a raid0 with many hundreds of hours of video editing.  It would have been a huge disaster to have lost that.

  • HT1727 How do I deauthorize a computer whne the hard drive has crashed and is not recoverable ?

How do I deauthorize a computer when the hard drived has crashed and is not  recoverable ?

You cannot directly deauthorize a computer that's not working or to which you no longer have access. You can authorize a total of up to five systems, so unless you've hit that limit it's probably not really important that you deauthorize your dead unit now. If you really want to deauthorize that system now, you can go into your iTunes Store account and there will be a "deauthorize all" button. You can then re-authorize the computers you're using.
Note that you can only use the "deauthorize all" option once per year, unless something's changed very recently.

  • How much would it cost to replace the hard drive on a classic?

The classic that I have has a dead hard drive, and I'm considering replacing the hard drive instead of buying a new one. Which would be cheaper?

It would be cheaper to replace the Hardisk at a 3rd Party service, google "iPod repairs" and you will get a whole list maybe one near your area.
Used to have Refurbished iPod from Apple ON-line store, but I cant see any.

  • How do you remove photos permenantly from the hard drive using iPhoto 11?

Was just wondering if this is possible as removing photos in iphoto leaves them on the hard drive and I don't want to waste disk space.

btw it's set not to copy photos into the iphoto library
    This creates the problem.
When you opted to run a Referenced Library you took on the resposibility for managing the files. You get the from the camera to wherever you store them, and if you want to delete them you get them from there to the trash after deleting them from iPhoto.
iPhoto will not delete files it does not manage.

  • Computer crashed, move hard drive to another computer. How do I find address book on the hard drive to import to new computer

I need to retrieve contacts from my wifes thunderbird profile. all I have is the hard drive from the crashed computer. Where can I find the address book? I have to use two different computers as her new computer has no spot for another hard drive

have you enabled viewing of hidden files and folders? see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hidden-files#show-hidden-files=windows-7
Windows hides the application data folders and you must override the setting to find anything it contains.

  • How do I do the partition of the hard drive?

    Mac Pro

    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Note that SMART is not supported for external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
    7. If you have made more than one volume repeat Steps 5 and 6 for each volume you created.

  • I have a Chrysler Town and Country Minivan and want to put my itunes library on the hard drive.  How?, I have a Chrysler Town and Country Minivan and want to put my itunes library on the hard drive.  How?

My 3rd gen iPod Touch will play through the system (playlist and all); however, I want to put all my music and playlists on the vehicle's hard drive so I don't need my iPod with me.  I cannot get it to read the music files.

  • How do I delete a partition on a hard drive?

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro with OS X Lion (don't know the version), I installed windows 7 shortly afterwards and primarily used that. I've now sold the laptop but need to delete the windows partition and that's where the problem started. The original Mac partition stopped working, so I deleted the content on the bootcamp partition and reinstalled OSX onto that one, now I am unable to delete the original partition so only half of the 500GB hard drive is available to use. Can anyone tell me how to delete the old partition so I can then just re-install OSX so it's ready for its new owner? I also have two recovery HD partitions. Please help!

make it easy, kill 2 birds with 1 stone
reboot holding 3 keys - option, command, r - you should see a spinning globe, if not try again
open disk utilty, select your HD on the left and erase/reformat as mac journaled
    exit du, choose install OSX
result - no more windows or other random partitions and a fresh OSX like out of the box
