How to put MacBook Pro display to sleep while watching DVD on 2nd Display

Not sure if this is answered elsewhere, but I have a MacBook Pro with a second larger display attached thru DVI. As I watch DVDs on the external display, I would like to darken out the MacBook Pro screen so it is not distracting while watching the movie. I seemingly can't put only the MacBook display to sleep - both displays goto sleep. I can't close the MacBook either. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Hold the '"Darker" key down until the screen is ghostly.

  • My macbook pro will not sleep while connected to a Thunderbolt Display.

I am getting frustated on this issue after receving little assistance from apple support.  I can put the macbook pro to sleep and all indications are that is sleeping.  It;s hard to tell with a macbookpro retina because they don;t have the pulsiong light to show when in sleep mode like the non-retina models.  I can put the laptop in sleep mode and then return 8 hours later to find the laptop is warm to the touch and doesn't appera to have slept during this time.  I can follow exactly the same steps when "not" connected to the thunderbolt display and the macbook pro is cool to the touch and appears to have slept nicely. what is going on here?  I am using a bluetooth keyboard and trackpad and the issue is replicated when in clamshell mode and when the lid is open.

I'm seeing similar behavior when I disconnect my TBD. My Retina MBP doesn't go to sleep. I get to work an hour later and it is very hot to the touch.
I'm not seeing lots of people complaining, so I wonder if it's something weird I do. Do you have VMWare Fusion or XQuartz running when you try and sleep?

  • Screen Sleeps while watching DVD or Stream

    Hello
I have a problem with my PowerBook. I hate the energy saver function. When I use normal programs everything is o.k. and when their is no input it sleeps after a couple of minuten.
The problem is that while I watching an DVD or an Interstream my energy Saving Options put my screen to black because their is no input or mouse moving.
Is their a way to prevent the screen to go to black without switching off the engergy saving options while watching a DVD or Stream??

Disable all sleep functions. IMHO, they're overrated.

  • How to put iPod touch 5g to sleep while listening to a song on youtube?

right now if i put the ipod to sleep then it stops playing the song on youtube.  any way i can fix this?

If you go into Settings>General>Auto-Lock and tap Never, your iPod should stay on... Of course this will drain the battery in a few hours because the screen is staying active all the time, or until you manually lock it / turn it off. And if a thief picks it up they will be able to use your iPod also, at least until they manually turn the screen off. Things to think about. Hope this helps. Cheers.

  • Satellite Pro A300D - Error message while watching DVDs

    Hi There
I have a problem with my satellite Pro A300-140 running Vista 32-bit OS
Every time I try and watch a DVD I get an error message " Unable to output the video to an external device. Please check the external output setting after ending the application "-I am not trying to connect to anything - I just want to watch a movie !
Any ideas - I did read this was a known problem but I can't re-find the information ?
    Thanks

    Hi
You should try the new Realtek sound driver from the Realtek page:
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/
Furthermore I recommend updating the Toshiba DVD player. It's placed on Toshiba European driver page.
Just one tip; Im using the VLC player. Its free software and very nice
It plays almost all video and audio formats google for VLC player!

  • Can i connect my macbook pro to a tv to watch movies etc

I'm trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my TV to watch DVDs and catch-up tv shows.
My MacBook is a late 2011 model, my TV is an LG, around 6 years old - doesn't have HDMI access, but has video & audio inputs.  I've successfully used these inputs to watch DVDs from my old Sony Playstation, so I know they work.
I have the cables - a mini display port Thunderbolt to VGA adapter and a VGA to TV converter box, as well as the audio cables.  Connecting all these isn't my problem.
When I connect it, and then go to Display, the problems begin.
Once I plug the cable into the Thunderbolt port, the "Arrangement" option on the Display menu shows up, I click on it, then I check the "Mirror Displays" box- the screen on the MacBook changes, but nothing shows up on the TV.  I've tried all the input modes on the TV, nothing makes a difference.
Underneath the "Mirror Displays" box is one that says, "Airplay Mirroring" and the drop down menu on this is greyed out, showing "no devices detected - I assume this is for Apple TV, and has nothing to do with what I'm doing.
I've watched a few YouTube videos on how to do this - some show the same screen I get when I check "Mirror Displays" but in the videos, everything runs smoothly from there!
One of the videos I watched showed instead a TV icon in the menu bar along the top right of the MacBook screen - this doesn't appear on mine - in fact, when I turn Mirroring on, all the items in this menu bar disappear.
Can anybody help me please?  I'm very frustrated by this time!

Never mind, I solved it.  Didn't know the converter needed a power source to operate (duh!)  Now I have that, it works just fine.......

Hi there, I was just wondering how to connect to wi-fi as soon as I turn my macbook pro on from sleep mode
The thing is, I constantly have to select the network i want, even though I've already set the location to automatic and even added the network to my preference list..

you've posted in the iPhone forum.

  • My macbook pro goes to sleep by it does not wake up. I have to restart it. I had recently to change the board in the attached Thunderbolt display.

my macbook pro goes to sleep by it does not wake up afterwards. I have to restart it. I had recently to change the board in the attached Thunderbolt display, because I noticed that the same problem arose when the display was attached.
Now with the new board, it can't be the display's fault. I hope it is not macbook pro's main board fault. Maybe hasthe notebook board been damaged by the faulty display?
To bring my MacBook Pro to service will slow down my work. This is why I am posting this message, in the hope to be able to run a diagnostic test myself.
    Thanks a lot, in advance.

    Hello Aminetti,
It sounds like your computer goes to sleep, and will not wake up, so you must manually restart your computer. I recommend the troubleshooting in the following article:
OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5357
    Reset SMC
    Reset NVRAM/PRAM
    Test with external devices disconnected
    Try Safe Mode
    Try another user account
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • How can I make my macbook pro go to sleep when I close the lid? Currently it doesn't sleep when on battery.

How do I make my macbook pro go to sleep when I close the lid?

For this and other power related issues the best first step to try is resetting the System Management Controller.

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep, even in safe boot

    Hey gang,
I can't figure out what to do with this problem. I recently did an archive & install of 10.5 on my 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo, and then used software update to get to 10.5.2.
Ever since doing that, my MacBook Pro will not sleep on its own anymore. It will sleep the display, but it won't sleep the system. (I can close the lid and it will sleep. I can also choose "Sleep" from the Apple Menu, and it will sleep. It just won't sleep on its own.)
At first I thought it might be Time Machine that was preventing it from sleeping, but I turned off Time Machine and the problem persisted. I tried creating a new user, and the problem persisted. In fact, I EVEN BOOTED IN SAFE MODE AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTED!
I went through every single step outlined on this page (yes, every single step), and the problem still persisted: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070129234938244
Does anybody have any ideas what I can do at this point? I'm pulling out my hair over here....
    Thanks!
    Scott

I see you've done your homework. I have this no auto-sleep problem on my Mac pro and none of those things worked for me either but I thought you should give them a shot.
I made a little sleep program of my own. You are welcome to try it. It's a very simple shell script that checks system idle time and if it's bigger than the sleep timer you set in system preferences it puts your computer to sleep. It will work so long as you can manually put your computer to sleep from the apple menu.
You'll also need to create a launch daemon to periodically run the script.
here are the steps to do it.
    1. copy and paste the following into TextEdit.
    #!/bin/bash
    idl=$"`ioreg -c IOHIDSystem | awk '/HIDIdleTime/ {print int($NF/1000000000); exit}'`"
    sleeptimer=$"`defaults read /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement "Custom Profile" | grep "System Sleep Timer" | awk '{print $5}' | sed -e 's/;//g'`"
    st=`expr $sleeptimer \* 60 `
    if \[ $idl -gt $st \]; then
    shutdown -s now
    fi
    2. Format it as *plain text* (shiftcommandT in TextEdit) and save it as sleep.sh (don't use the .txt extension) at the top level of your hard drive.
    3. make it unix executable by entering the following command in terminal.
    *chmod 755 /sleep.sh*
    4. Download and install [Lingon|http://lingon.sourceforge.net>.
    5. Open Lingon and create a new *Users Daemon*
Call it,say, com.sleep.launchd (the name is not important)
    On line 2. enter /sleep.sh
and in section 3 set it to run every 30 seconds.
Click save (you'll have to enter your admin password).
    6. Restart.
That's it. Once this is done you can forget about it. The sleep settings are still controlled from system preferences. The sleep agent will work with every user and even over the login window.
To uninstall it, open Lingon, select the launch daemon you made and uncheck the box "Enabled" in the upper right corner. save and restart.
