How to put video files on external drive for Final Cut Pro?

Sorry for the stupid post, but I'm on day one of trying out final cut pro. (Tired of the very limiting imovie) I have a Sony HD video camera and a Go Pro HD camera. I want to store all my video on my 1TB external drive and edit from it. How do I set that up? I'm not up on the lingo that's used in the program, nor can I figure out how to do this so far.
Thanks in advance.

Hiya mate, first off no such thing as a stupid post. Better to ask if you're not sure!
There are a lot of variables to think about, what codec you want to edit in, i.e. HDV, IMX, ProRes then there's frame rate, 25, 29.97 etc. Best practice is to work native to with the codec you've shot. i.e. if the camera is HDV ingest at HDV. If you want work at a higher codec, ingest or transcode to that codec then work with it in FCP. FCP works best with all assets at the on the same timebase and codec.
You also have to think about disk speed and bandwidth from the external HD to Mac. FCP will only be able to handle 'x' amount of streams and layers depending on the codec.
Anyways...bsck to the question at hand. Im not sure what camera you have shot in but if its HDV you easy set up to set your project to HDV/PAL/NTSC/25/29.97, then set your scratch location to the external drive, and then save your project (make sure you have named it correctly as the scratch location aka capture scratch folder, will be named with the same name as the project). Connect up the camera over firewire then go to log and capture (cmd+8) and ingest.
Hope this helps!

SJ

  • Using 2 external drives for final cut pro 7

I have approx. 45hours (prob less after selecting i/o of capture clip) of avchd footage that i need to encode / process as apple proress
I think 2tb fw800 drive may just about hold 30 hours of footage, i have 2x2 tb drives (4tb in total).
I know its pos to use 2 ext. drives, but if i select these two drives to capture, render, will these capture the same file to both drives, or will it capture to hdd1 then when hdd is full, will it automatically start capturing to hdd2 or is the a manual thing, ie i have to wait till hdd1 is nearly full before telling fcp to capture to hdd 2.
When i edit, will it seek/ read the media clips from both hdd1 and 2? ie can i edit with capture files on two drives and create render files on one drive.

will these capture the same file to both drives
FCP will not duplicate the files across both discs, it will capture/render to whichever disc has the most available free space, thereby spreading captures/renders evenly between both discs.
When i edit, will it seek/ read the media clips from both hdd1 and 2? ie can i edit with capture files on two drives and create render files on one drive.
    Yes.

  • Following Media Files Are Not Optimized For Final Cut Pro

I'm sure you've seen this before and I've tried to search for a thread on it here and fell asleep, so sorry if this is a repeat.
I have edited projects in Premiere Pro (on my PC) and I have tried to transfer them in FCP. It worked with the exception of two things:
    1. the error message, "Following Media Files Are Not Optimized For Final Cut Pro"
    2. the quality *****! watching it on the playback in FCP it looks great, but then when I burn it to Disc it's pixelated in spots and generally has a lower quality picture.
I know that it's Standard Def. and can't expect the best, but I've done it before (once or twice) and it didn't seem this bad.
Can someone suggest anything to help the quality? Should I run my AVIs through MPEG Steamclip to make it a QT file and if so what is the best format in that since there are many to choose from and most I'm not familiar with?
    Thank you,
    Crayton

I did compress them to DV NTSC then burned it to DVD and the result was no bueno.
I thought what I would do is try compressing them again before I send them on over to DVDSPRO. Here is a simplified break down of the situation:
    - I have edited the raw footage in Premiere Pro on my PC. They were recorded and captured as SD.
    - I rendered them in Premiere, then transfered the rendered AVI file to FCP.
    - When went to place the files in FCP, I received the warning message; "Following Media Files Are Not Optimized For Final Cut Pro" but I went forward anyways and it allowed me to do so.
    - Originally I went ahead and compressed them from FCP to QT Movie as a DV NTSC, which ended up poorly.
    - Therefore my question is, should I compress them using another file type (other then DV NTSC)? Which leads me to another program that I have called MPEG Streamclip, which offers tons of file types of which I am unfamiliar with most. I want the best quality of course but don't know what file type is the highest going from AVI to a format that can be accepted by FCP and ultimately DVDSPRO. Keeping in mind that I only have FCP5 and do not have Prores.
    Did that make sense?
    Thank you again,
    Crayton

    @daguerratype
The Spatial Conform is one of the things I tried. Unfortunately none of its settings fixed the aspect ratio. When I choose "Fit", it simply shows it as 4:3 and leaves left and right black borders on a 16:9 timeline. When I choose "Fill", it zooms the 4:3 video and chops off the top and bottom parts.
    @Thomas Emmerich
This is a decent workaround. Fortunately my clips are named in such a way that I can easily drop them all in the timeline and do a Command-F (Find) to search by clip name, highlight all of them in the search results, then use the Inspector to modify the properties of all the clips at once. I have to change X-scale to 133% and Spatial Conform to "Fit", and now at least it fits the 16:9 timeline properly.
Thanks to both replies. I still hope Apple adds a way to fix the clip in the Event browser so that I don't have to do this workaround.

  • How do i delete .lock video files on my iMac in final cut pro

I'm trying delete video files in Final Cut Pro X but they come with cant delete because of .lock how can i get rid of these?

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • How Do I Prep Larger Than 4K "Stills" for Final Cut Pro?

    Gentleman,
Im having a problem exporting my sequence because there is a JPEG which has RGB Color Space that is larger than 4K and apparently Final Cut Pro only will export images that are 4K or Smaller. How do I reduce the size of this Images Color Space to be under 4K so I can Work with it in Final Cut Pro 7 ?

You should be able to resize it in just about any photo/image editing software such as Photoshop, Preview, iPhoto and many others.

  • How to import footage to an external hard drive in Final cut pro X

I am having trouble importing footage from camera directly to an external hard drive in final cut pro X. When I go to import the footage, and select where I want it to be saved, my external drive is not even listed. It shows up fine on desktop and in final cut pro 7. I also unchecked the box in FCPX preferences of "copy files to final cut pro folder". Any advice is appreciated.

Nevermind, I hooked up my other external that is formatted Mac OS Extended that is used for time machine and FCPX recognized it fine. I guess I will have to reformat the MS-DOS harddrive to Mac OS extended as well.

    Luis,
Just to clarify one point…in order for Streamclip to convert the MTS I believe a plug-in like the AVCCAM QuickTime importer from Panasonic needs to be installed. (Credit David McClain over at the FCS boards for that info.)

  • External HD for Final Cut

Will rendering/saving/etc be slower if I am using an external HD or is it mostly based off processor speed/graphics card? What exactly is the workflow for using an external HD for final cut?
I'm in the market for a new External so I can use it for scratch disks and saving directly onto it so I don't clutter my mac's HD.
Right now I'm looking at OWC raid HD.. it's 7200 RPM 300 mb/s, what aspect of video editing would that effect? There's also the option to get an external raid SSD, which I thought was for faster booting of applications/OS so I don't know why it would be useful as an external or if it would be useful beneficial for Final Cut.
I am basically looking for the cheapest 1TB drive that is reliable (won't die on me in a year) and won't hinder my Final Cut speeds if I'm working directly off of it.
    Any insight would be great.

I assume you are talking about your 17" MacBook Pro. You should never store video for editing on the internal hard drive of your laptop. You should ALWAYS use an external drive. That being said I use a Sonnet Tempo SATA Express34 card adapter in the Express34 slot to a Thermaltake Blackx Duet hard drive docking system. I put two Hitachi (or any brand) 1TB internal drives in the dock. You can get these now for less than $60.00 from B&H. These are great because they are semi-hot swappable which means you can use separate drives for separate projects.
Of course a RAID would work also. I would still consider a eSATA RASID device and use the Express 34 slot. Maybe someone has a recommendation on a specific brand.

  • How to setup an artist mix (audio mixer) on final cut pro 7?

how to setup an artist mix (audio mixer) on final cut pro 7?

    Hi Meatpuppet,
I'm having the same issue with not getting my audio through to the client on Ichat theater preveiew. I'm on a mac pro with a small DV camera attached via firewire. when I start the chat, the person on the other side sees and hears me fine, but then when I start sharing in FCP, the video switches so that the remote person sees the time line, but loses the audio from me and doesn't hear the audio from the time line...
The manual recommends "disconnecting and external video device" ( then what do us mac pro folks do?)
So my question for you, and I know that you're on and Apogee Duet, is: Was your tinkering in FCP, your system sound settings, or iChat? in other words, where was the disconnect?
    thanks.

  • I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x.  When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists iPhoto Library as GRAY, and will not let me access it.  I need the videos out of there.  I have tried every way I can think of.

I have also tried from the iphoto side, to export the videos or share them to final cut.  I have had no luck.
I have tried to drag and drop indidual video clips from iphoto to fcp, and the programs simply do not respond to each other
I can see in the OLDER version of final cut pro x, where it has IMPORT FILES as an option, it was possible.  I see this on forums and youtube videos of the older versions.
However, the newer version that i have, does not have IMPORT 'FILES' as an option, it is simply all lumped together as IMPORT 'MEDIA'
    Thank You for the Help

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
    vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?
All the footage, and all the libraries to all programs, or on a new pegasus 12tb raid 5 setup fyi.

You can't directly. You can either export a file, or you can save it as a template, effect, title, transition, or generator, that can be used in FCP.

Glad you found the answer.  But something seems wrong.  FCP should be able to assign the scratch disk to your startup drive.  It's not advisable, but it should be possible.  You might want to try and figure out what's going on before what ever's going on cause other problems.
