[How To Question] 1440p to 1080p

Hey gang!
I've been testing out the 1920x1440 resolution on my GoPro Hero 3 Black, but haven't been able to find a way to resize it to 1080p.
I was under the impression, that since 1440p is a "taller" video, I am given the freedom to slice off as much as I want off the top or bottom to make 1080p. Is that not true? Is that not possible?
Anyone have any advice for me? Thanks!

I am playing with the same issue.  Video shot at 1440 on a GoPro is much more useful, as often you can't frame other than by guessing depending on how you use the camera. And they are free pixels; if you don't record them they get tossed, it's not downsizing- it's sensor format driven.
I am no expert.  The way I fix it is I set up the whole sequence at 1440, edit as desired, then make a white video at 1920 x 1080, put it above the whole sequence at low opacity then use the motion control to raise or lower each clip to set the discard.  Then I reset the sequence to 1080.
I wish I knew a way to set bias of the resizing discard from 1440 to 1080 to either the top or bottom, that would make the process easier.  Is this possible? Thanks.

  • How do questions disappear from forum?

How do questions disappear from the Premiere forum?  Since I have a GTX 480 and am interested in learning how significant a difference official support for mercury playback is, vs hacked support, I had entered a question soliciting feedback from owners of GTX 470 video cards.  Someone with almost 12,000 posts took exception to my post, I responded, and my post can no longer be found.
Is there a problem with the forum software?

    Steve,
Do not recall that post, but then things have been pretty fast and furious in the CS5 forum.
Now, there are a couple of ways that posts can disappear, or seem to do so:
1.) a moderator can Lock a thread, or can branch things off into a new thread. This just happened today, however both original threads are still there, just not separated.
2.) Adobe Admin. can remove a thread (do not think that a MOD can do that - only Lock, Move, or branch?), but would not likely do so, unless it was obviously spam. Even then, the thread would likely remain, with all URL's "[Edited by Host]" or similar.
3.) a moderator can Move a thread, say if one was posted to the CS5 forum, and it was really concerning CS4, or earlier. This can also happen, if a thread is best suited for the Hardware Forum (would be my first guess in your case), or to the Lounge, if I have managed to drag it too far off-topic. Check the Hardware Forum, 'cause that is where I would expect such a post to be.
4.) when Adobe went to the new software, many older posts went to bit-heaven I highly doubt that anything like that happened here. We lost a few posts when there was a major Jive update, but there has not been such an update in ~ 8 mos.
5.) one can often not see posts, if they access the forum via e-mail, instead of a browser. I would guess that with some feeds, that could happen too, but do not know.
Good luck, and do check the Hardware Forum,
    Hunt
PS - usually, when Jeff, Jerry.K, Curt, et al, Moves a post, they try to let the poster know. Still, with CS5.0.2 hitting, and all the traffic, maybe they slipped up, ran completely out of time, or tried, and failed in the notification. Most likely, if one of the MOD's did Move it, they'll jump right in and report having done so. They are great, though sometimes details might get lost on a busy day, especially if they are trying to get out of town to be with their families on a holiday weekend (US) to indulge themselves in their "other lives." Or, they could be packing up to avoid a hurricane - Earl.

  • Convert aspect ratio (from 1440p to 1080p)

    Hi All,
I'm using the trial of Premiere CC (considering making the jump from FCPX). The getting started guides on adobe's site are great but i'm having problems trying to find an answer for this question:
I shot some footage in 1440p (by mistake), i've edited it into a sequence that I want, colour graded it and put music to it. How do I crop it so that it becomes 1080p. I've used the crop effect but when I go to export it to h.264 it still exports it as 1440p but with black bars.
Can anyone help? I would be eternally grateful
    Chris

1440 has a aspect ratio of 1.33. This should also be in your sequence settings.
1440 can be easily exported to 1080 with aspect ratio of 1.0.
You can also drop 1440 footage directly in a 1080 sequence, it will automatically fit the screen.

  • How to question

Ok I installed teh trial word to pdf program.  Now how do I convert a file. I see no insructions.

You will need to find a forum for the application you are using and ask your questions about how to use the application there.

  • Several how-to questions...

I'm looking for answers to the following questions with respect to Framemaker 9:
    1) How do I get the Spell Checker to recognize words that abut dash ems and ellipsis?  Currently the Spell check flags such instances.
    2) Is there no way to display POTENTIALLY misspelled words as Microsoft Word does with wiggly red underlines?
    3) When hypenation is turned ON for a particular paragraph design, how does one keep the very last word on the page from hyphenating without affecting all of the other hyphenation within that paragraph?  I would have though Framemaker would know better than to split a word in the middle of a page break.
...this is an example of what I am talking about. Hyphen-
    ---------auto page break-----
ation is occuring across a page break!
    4) Is there a way to make the text large in the Adobe Help Viewer window?  If one is working on a 26"+ LCD monitor, the default text in the Help viewer is so small one needs a magnifying glass to read it.
    Thanks.

    >> Try a thin-space between the words and the em-dash or ellipsis.
Thanks, but that really creates another problem, that is, when using FULL JUSTIFICATION the thin space and become a huge space.  I can't believe FM is so dumb that it doesn't know better than to flag the words left and right of a dash em as misspelled.
    >>  IIRC, this is a browser function - "ctrl +" to enlarge in Firefox and Chrome.
I have no idea what you just said.  What is IIRC?  And what does FF and Chrome have to do with the sad Adobe Help viewer?

  • How to keep files as 1080p in true aspect ratio?

OK.. So I got myself iMovie from iLife 09 and I like it.
BUT.... I import 1080p video from files on my computer (that were directly from my camera) and I import them in, fine... that works.
I go to export through quicktime and it says the current resolution is 940x something ..... not 1080p.
How can I get it to output 1080p... or 1080 properly? I'm not quite sure what the deal here is.

There was a bug in iMovie 08, probably still in 09, where it would say 960 x 540 but in fact the footage was still 1080. Just go ahead and export it in QT using 1920 x 1080 in the settings. It should be ok.

  • Simple how to question ...

... here is the situation: I'm brand new to Motion ... I received footage and applied some simple lower thirds to it ... now, I received much higher resolution footage ... how can I re-use/merge/export the motion effects I created with/to the new high resolution footage?
It is probably not the correct venue, but I'm kinda under the gun timeline wise.
    Thank you.

Alan, brief follow-up question: I finally got the new footage (1280x720 ... oh my, so crisp!) ... I imported the elements from my first, low res project ... all good ... but now I can not move the imported elements freely ... I can move the group (the "old" project was 720 x 486) within the new canvas, but individual elements "disappear outside the old canvas dimensions ... almost like a mask has been imported, masking everything beyond the old dimensions ...
    Thanks again,
    Stephan

  • How to question regarding JSP

    Hi,
I have used ViewCurrentRecord web bean to display records from EMP table. I have to use the Dept_Id_FK from the current record of the EMP table to display corresponding records of Dept table. I have a view object called DeptView in my Business Components which selects all the records from the Dept table.
How do I get the value of Dept_Id_FK and use it to display the required records of the Dept table?
I tried to declare a variable and get the value of Dept_Id_FK but it did not work. My code is as follows:
    <%! String m_DeptId = null; %>
    <jsp:useBean id="RowViewer" class="oracle.jbo.html.databeans.ViewCurrentRecord" scope="request">
    <%
    RowViewer.initialize(pageContext, "EMPApp_EMP_EMPAppModule.EMPView1");
    RowViewer.setReleaseApplicationResources(false);
    RowViewer.getRowSet().next();
    m_DeptId = (String)RowViewer.getRowSet().getCurrentRow().getAttribute("DeptIdFk");
    %>
    </jsp:useBean>
    Thanks.

I think you posted this question twice. Please see my reply in the other instance.

  • Yet another how to * question

    Hi guys,
Fall semester is ending next week, and I want to find a job by December. Any idea on how to work it out in this shrinking job market?
Do you think Sun certified java developer certification might be something good to have under the belt? I remember the programmer cert helped me quite a bit in having the last job.
    A little info on me:
    location: Los Angeles
    education: sophomore college student
    java work experience: 1.5 years
    certificaitons:
    Sun certified java programmer
IBM certified solution developer(Jcertify level II) on WebSphere 3.5
I really appreciate your spending time on this offtopic post.
    Thanks.

If you could only choose one, which would be better,
experience or certification? That's a very difficult question. I think that experience vs. certification is like asking whether apples are better than organges; they're simply different, but typically compliment each other very well.
While experience demonstrates nothing but the fact that you've been doing something for a long time, most people choose to take advantage of their long stint in the field to refine their skills and become more knowledgeable about it over time. Presumably, if you've kept jobs for long enough, you are able to write a program; hopefully, a half-decent one.
Certification, on the other hand, displays that you have learned the syntax of a language, the API of a technology, the intended uses, etc., but not that you can actually use it to its full potential. Using a technology is as much about knowing what not to do as it is knowing what to do; experience helps with the former. Certification may be considered sufficient for junior software developers, rather than engineers, who do not necessarily take part in the design of the system that they are developing for, but is simply not enough in most cases.
As long as one is not stuck in the past and welcomes change, my conclusion would be that one's experience weighs more heavily than holding a certificate. Having said that, if you lack experience, I think that the studying and work required to get a certificate can do nothing but help you out. Again, neither is enough to judge somebody's skills except for at a birds-eye level.
In response to the original poster, I think that having a genuine passion for programming is one of the greatest job-landing tools you can ever have. Learn as much as you can, utilize your knowledge, love it, and display your skills to your would-be employers; you'll win out in the end.

    1) Using iPod with multiple computers
If you set the iPod to manual update on another computer, iTunes on your new laptop will see this and not automatically update. The iPod remembers if it is manually updating when connected to a new computer.
    2) Yes, it will work just like yours. Just connect the iPod and it will work just the same way yours does. When you connect your iPod and the iTunes Setup Assistant appears, just do not select the option to automatically update everything. If it does automatically update, just go to the iPod preferences (edit-->preferences, iPod tab) and set it

  • Macbook  Air 11" - How to question

Hi, I have recently purchased my 1st Macbook (Air 11") - it is being shipped as we speak.
However I was wondering if anyone here could answer this question:
I have a (Graphire2) Wacom tablet that I would like to use with my Macbook Air for such things as sketching etc. The tablet has a disc|driver which is Mac compatible, but I have no idea how to get the tablet installed on my Macbook Air as I cannot use the disc. The tablet has a USB connection, but what must I do about installing a driver?
    Thanx!

If you have another computer that has a DVD drive on it you can use the Remote Disc feature. Either that or you will need to purchase one of the MacBook Air Superdrive's. I see they're $79USD on the Apple Store.
While you are waiting for your machine to arrive you can read the owners manual, on page 19 you can find information on the Remote Disc functionality. The manual is located at:

  • Serve data driven docs - how to question

I'm sure this is very basic for most, but this is my first go at this...  I'm only asking to be pointed in the right direction, not looking for  excessive hand holding.
I have created a table in MySQL for documents I wish to serve up (PDFs,  MS word, Excell, etc...). It contains fields for the DocName and  DocLocation (dir. path on the web server), as well as a few others... I  can display the data in live view after a record set query in DW. What I  can't seem to figure is how to create a link that uses the directory  path of a given doc name, so I can serve up the various documents via  the database. I've look at DW help files and Googled for answers, but i  fear I'm not searching using the correct terminology key words.
    Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

I think I understand what you are referring too Philip but that isn't exactly what I am looking for. Maybe this example will help out:
Assume user(schema) ADMIN4TEST SQL is already been displayed
Data Modeler DDL Generates the following table create SQL:
    CREATE TABLE PAYMENT
    PAYMENTID NUMBER (10) NOT NULL,
    etc.
This is what I am looking for:
    CREATE TABLE ADMIN4TEST.PAYMENT
    PAYMENTID NUMBER (10) NOT NULL
    etc.
I think for what I am getting you are reffering to changeing the user from being ADMIN4TEST to ADMIN4PROD. Am I understanding correctly?

  • An actual real live "how to" question!  :-)

    All,
Just did a two camera shoot (one electronic remote), both cameras time synched. I'd like to bring both set of card data from each camera into one folder sorted by time the image was created. The remote was shooting stage show at full stage wide angle, while I used my 70-200 IS 2.8 for telephoto work. I'm looking to be able to sort and edit based on the time sequence so I can have the images taken at the same time adjusted to be similar in white balance adjustments, exposure, etc... Any help would be appreciated.
    Jay S.

Here is my suggested workflow for multiple cameras. We do this when shooting with five different cameras for the same event, and we want them all synchronized within one second.
The key is to set all the photos to a common time source.
So after your shoot, using each camera, take a picture of the clock on your computer screen, one that shows the seconds.
Now open that picture on your computer, and compare the time that you see in the picture to the time that is in the IPTC of the photo. You can now calculate the difference between what the actual time is and the time that the photo says it it. Write down the serial number of teh camera, and the difference in time.
After you import into Lightroom, display only the photos with the Serial Number of the camera that you want to adjust the time. Adjust the IPTC time on all the selected photos so it is adjusted by the same time as the difference that you found earlier.
If you do the same thing for each camera, then they will all be adjusted to make up for any difference in the clocks between cameras.
    To summarize:
    a) Take a picture of a clock.
    b) Find out how much that clock differs from what the camera says.
    c) Adjust your photos by the appropriate time difference.
    d) Repeat for all the cameras.
Since you are using the same clock as a reference, all the photos should end up in exactly the correct sequence.
It's confusing until you do it once.. then it makes sense.
