How to Quiet a Mac Pro keyboard?

Need to work online without keyboard noise

There are no silent keyboards. Even typing on my iPad isn't completely silent, and that operation features no moving parts except my fingers.
The best you can do to quiet your MBP keyboard is to put a thick silicone KB protector over it. That will damp the noise some. It will also make typing a miserable experience, multiplying your typographical error rate several times.

  • How noisy is the Mac Pro?

How noisy is the Mac Pro - say compared to an iMac?

    Hello Pagemakers2,
First,I doubt you'll get a definitive answer to this kind of question because there's significant variability in the "intensity of use" among Mac Pro owners. I mean of course, some users need to run apps and process file types which naturally require more cooling of hard-running cpus and that will cause more fan noise.
I'm almost embarrassed to admit: the most "intense" task my Mac Pro handles (video encoding) uses only about 65% of processing capacity. So... I never hear the fans at all, the Mac Pro does not even put out "warm air" from the exhaust ports. I work in a quiet environment (home) where, sometimes, I have to play music on iTunes or at least turn on the tv in the next room - just to have a little background noise. Meanwhile, the fan in my eMac can be heard when I wake it from sleep - but never unpleasantly.
I'm pretty sure most users will agree: when idling (surfing the web, even running filters on big digital files with Photoshop™) the Mac Pro is pretty quiet.
Oh, another factor to consider is: Whether or not you run heavy apps with a heavy work load "continuously." I mean for example: running those video conversions may take a few minutes on the Mac Pro (Intel). But I may run one file to burn to DVD on any given day. (On average, less than once a day.)
Burning: the original Sony OPTIARC drive which came factory installed made "moderate noise" (for about 2-3 minutes of burn time) but the noise was "annoying." I replaced that with (eventually) two Samsung units: these both make audible noise, but it seems less and certainly doesn't annoy me like the Sony unit did.
Just to be clear: I didn't replace the Sony drive due to noise, I did so because that model didn't (1) handle DVD-DL and (2) I wanted DVD drives which provide the Lightscribe disk labeling software. The "more pleasant sound" was a bonus.

  • How do you new Mac Pro owners like your machine with Logic?

Don't mean to be a PITA but I need to get this right before I drop three to five grand on a new set of music tools. I'm trying to decide between Mac Pro and iMac for use with Logic. Seems there are a lot of posts regarding glitches with the new Mac Pro and Logic, whereas the posts from people with older G4s and G5s seem to indicate they are running rock solid. So you new Mac Pro folks or anyone else, please weigh in. Is the new Mac Pro "glitch heavy" or is it just a matter of tweaking the system to where it runs smooth? In general, how do you new Mac Pro folks like the way it works with Logic?

I'm mostly pleased with my MacPro 2.66. Almost no crashes with Logic, although I experience a few more bugs here and there than with my G4. Occasional CoreAudio errors, I have to restart CoreAudio if my external word clock is set to the wrong sample rate when I open a session, there seems to be a bug between high fader levels (above +4dB) and panning... little things like that.
Then again, compared to my G4, the FireWire bus is screaming fast--with most sessions, I can run a buffer of 128 samples at 96k with my MOTU 828mkII, while my G4 would sometimes glitch at 96k with 512 samples. At 96k, 256 samples, my MacPro/828mkII rig is rock-solid... I informally tested it by recording 12 test tracks simultaneously for 20 minutes, with the CPU nearly maxed out (which was difficult to do--took a bunch of Space Designers and Ultrabeats)--absolutely zero clicks or pops.
And of course, WAY more processing power than my G4.
I'm assuming that MacPro compatibility is a fairly high priority for Apple these days, so hopefully the bugs will get worked out soon. And as things are, Logic is definitely usable on a MacPro--the bugs I encounter rarely slow down my work.
So, far from perfect, but as far as new technology goes, I'd say Logic on the MacPro is above average.
    Good luck!

  • How can I disable mac pro OSX 'spaces' shortcut keys? (i.e. CTL, Right Arrow)

How can I disable mac pro shortcut keys: CTL right arrow, CTL left arrow, CTL up arrow, CTL down arrow? Currently, they take me from one space to another. (OSX 10.6) Goal is to use these shortcuts for text editing.

    Hi, Simon.
You can instruct iTunes and iPhoto to save their respective libraries to a different disk, e.g. your second hard drive. You can also move existing libraries for these apps to a drive other than your startup disk.
See the links concerning moving these libraries cited in the "More ways to save space if you have a spare partition or second hard drive" section of my "Freeing Space on your Mac OS X startup disk" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Program a mac pro keyboard?

When working from home I connect an older USB Mac Pro keyboard (one of the clear plastic ones) to my Macbook Pro 15", OSX 10.7.5.  The integrated Macbook keyboard itself has that F3 "Expand" function that I frequently use to find stuff when I've got a million things open.  Is there a way to program one of the function keys on the external keyboard to do the same thing?

Considering that such a program is OS-specific rather than model-specific, it might help to also ask in the forum for the OS version you have, which appears to be Tiger. Those forums are here:

  • How to improve my mac pro speed

how to improve my mac pro speed

You don't have a Mac Pro, you have a MacBook Pro. There is no way to make it faster because you cannot replace the CPU with a faster one. You can add more RAM to help improve performance when you have a lot of concurrent applications running or use memory hungry applications. You can add a faster disk drive to improve the speed of I/O. You can sell it and buy a faster model.

Disk Utility will pop up.....Your choices are to reinstall, you will not lose anything....
if however, you decide to format/erase your drive, then reinstall, you will lose everything...
suggestion - back everything up and do a clean install.

  • How to physically stop mac pro 2008's startup chime

I have a 2008 Mac pro and since upgrading to Mavericks, nothing at all has stopped the startup chime from blaring out of the speakers at every startup. In normal use, it's annoying, during troubleshooting, it is intolerable in our quiet workplace.
None of the 3rd party software solutions for silencing the startup chime work in Mavericks.
The Terminal solution has not worked since Lion, I believe.
Muting the volume before shutdown does not work.
Inserting a headphone plug does not work.
The chime just will not shut up.
I am not interested in the replies whose main message is one of these: "Wow, never heard that one before." ; "What a small problem." ; "The startup chime is an important troubleshooting tool." ; "I don't have that problem / your problem is wrong."
But I would be very grateful for instructions on how to disconnect the speaker physically – preferably without doing any harm to my machine. If there is a software solution that works in Mavericks, I will try it but I am not aware of any.

Thanks, Johnb-one, I ruled out StartNinja because I have tried it before on a couple OS cats but it has never worked for me. I'll try it again just to be sure because they now claim Mavericks-compatibility.
As per my original post, I have already tried the other two suggestions. They have worked in the past up until Mountain Lion. Apple has really ramped up security around the startup chime with Mavericks.
As I understand, the startup chime is a completely separate entity from the OS itself. Some versions of OS X have allowed limited access to its volume but Mavericks removed all that.

  • How To Install internal Mac Pro Bluetooth?

Could anyone draw me a picture in my head of how to install this bluetooth device before I get it and put it in pretty quick? Users guide is no joy. Can';t be too hard? I'm softwared up and external now. Keyboard connectivity is not what I'd like... maybe on account of the third party external usb/bluetooth.

  • Yosemite update to Mac pro keyboard and mouse not working anymore

Updated to Yosemite on my Mac pro, worked perfect for about 2 weeks then my keyboard and mouse stopped responding, both keyboard and mouse were replaced and still won't work. The computer turns on but won't respond to the USB mouse &Keyboard. Help

I have seen 2 out of the 6 mac pro's in my office do this. I am about to go to the apple store to show them.
When the computer is doing this I have tried using every wired apple keyboard in my office and none of them work. If I try the same keyboards on a windows computer or my macbook they work fine. If I use any non apple usb keyboard they work fine. My problem is if I turn the computer off for a few hours the usb apple keyboard works again so when the computer has been off all night and I pack it up to take it to applecare it is working by the time I get into the store.
I think there is a small flaw in usb port on the mac pro or the apple keyboard that when heated up from use stops the pins from contacting completely. It might be a manufacturing defect and it might be an unintended problem caused by how apple slightly modifies their USB ports.

  • How to erase a Mac Pro for selling when you don't have the discs

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 that I'd like to sell, so I need to remove all information from the HD, BUT none of the disc I have seem to work to install from.
I have several Macs and so have a lot of discs.....but none of them will work when I restart holding down C, or Command + R.
I have gone to Disc Utility and can't select the HD to erase, because it seems to be greyed out.
    I have on original discs:
    10.0
    10.4
    10.4.7
    10.5
    10.5.6
    10.6.3
all discs I either got with Mac's or purchased...!
    What's the solution?
All I want is to be able to sell the machine with some working OS on it?
    Thanks,
    Alan,

    Thanks Grant
The 10.6.3 disc would be the best. You will need a wired keyboard plugged directly into a USB port on the chassis, not on a display or any Hub.
         I am using wired kb.
If you hold down Alt/Option key at Startup, that should invoke the Startup Manager, and slowly draw an icon for each potentially bootable Volume. Choose the one you want and tell it to proceed.
So, right after I hear the chime, I should hold down "option"? How long should this take? A few times the computer seemed to freeze when doing this, and I just held down the power button for 10 sec to start over (I had a grey screen for a few minutes)...other times, it seems to just bypass the whole option and just restart normally?
Answer only the "what language" question and do not install. Wait for the menuBar to be drawn, then choose Disk Utility off a menu.
Appreciate any other suggestions you may have, thanks,
    Alan.

  • How loud is the Mac Pro under heavy load?

    Greetings to all.
I've got a Quad that currently likes to rev up it's fans when I'm doing 4 core calculations (rendering). It gets loud enough that it usually drones out anything not in my immediate area of my desk in my office. Just slightly quieter then the noise it throws off when you run Apple Hardware Test (which has no thermal management, so everything runs at full blast).
I'm fine with a loud computer, the Quad's still quieter then some of my PC's. But I would like to know- everyone is clamering about the Mac Pro's being quieter then the Quad.
Is this under load, or just idling?
Are the Mac Pro's as loud as the Quad when loaded down?
    -S'Captain

I have a dual 2.0 GHz Rev. A G5 and now am using a MP 3.0 GHz. The G5 is louder at idle than the MP is at full throttle. I decided to see how loud it would get but maxing out all 4 cores overnight. I came into the room the next day and was bummed it had crashed because it sounded like it had shut off but I moved the mouse and to my delight the thing was still churning away at 400%. It is very very quiet and I have slowly gotten used to the fact that it is nearly impossible to tell if it is asleep or awake. The G5's seem to have a very large delta with regard to fan noise, not so bad at idle and kinda loud when fully loaded. The MP's seem to go from nearly silent to barely audible.
Someone mentioned above that the machine has only passive heat-sinks on the CPUs which is true but misleading because each heat-sink has a dedicated fan right in-front of it in the case. So far I have added 4x1GB of non-Apple thermal spec RAM, i.e. no heat-sinks - just spreaders, and the fans have not spun any louder. Two of the sticks are Kingston and two are Crucials which were the wrong types due to an error by them and didn't have the Apple-style sinks on em. The Kingstons have run reliably for over a week with me stressing them almost every night and I have encountered a lone ECC error which was corrected. I think in cooler environments you may be OK with regular FB-DIMMS but in a hotter environment you may have issues, I keep it pretty cool where the MP lives.

  • Using a Mac Pro keyboard with OS 9?

I've acquired a couple of Pro Keyboards (model a1048) that come with the disclaimer that they require v10.2 or later.
Well they actually sort of work with OS 9 - with the glaring exception of the CD Eject key. THAT key is totally non-functional which is a BIG pain since my systems have no external CD Eject button.
Did ANYONE ever write a Mac OS 9 driver for this keyboard? I know Apple didn't.
    Gary

    Hi, Gary -
Make sure the extension named HID Library is enabled in EXtensions Manager. Although the additional info for that item states it is used by Input Sprockets, it is often needed by even the keyboards that came with the early G4s in order for the extra keys (Eject and Volume+/-) to function.
    There are alternatives.
    • At startup, pressing and holding the mouse button down will open the optical drive.
    • At startup, press and hold Option. This will bring up Startup Manager. ONCe Startup MAnager has fully loaded, press Command-. (Command-periodkey) - this should open the optical drive.
    • During use with Finder frontmost, select the disk, then press Command-Y ("Put Away" in the File menu).
    • Use software to do it.
        - Look on your OS 9 Install CD for a folder named Eject Extras - there's an applet inside named Eject which can be used to eject the disk. This can be assigned to one of the FKeys in the Keyboard control panel.
        - Use a third-party software utility such as EjectDisk.

  • How to make new Mac Pro with iWeb 08 see my existing .mac site.

About a year ago I bought a new Mac Pro. Before that I had a G4 that I had used with an older version of iWeb to create a basic website for my business. I figured with the new Mac when I opened iWeb 08 it would see my .mac settings in System prefs and automatically open it but it does not. It will only let me creat a new site, there is no way to redirect it to an existing site.
Anyone know how I do this or what I am doing wrong?
