How to re-enter a program after exiting

Hi,
I just bought a new 24" iMac and wow, I love it. I'm still a little new since I'm switching from windows (I have some Linux experience so it's not all foreign )...
I prefer my icons on my desktop and when I double-click to enter a program, it's fine. But when I exit the program and then try right away to double-click my desktop icon again to re-enter the program, nothing happens. Nada. (Btw, this happens on my new MacBook as well).
I actually have to go to the dock, exit the program there and THEN re-enter, at which point I can re-enter successfully.
Is this just the way the Mac works? I imagine I can save time and trouble by just exiting originally using the dock area. Is this my best option or am I missing something?
Many Thanks for any tips here,
Frank B.

If you do not quit the program properly, but just close the main window-then this is the result. To quit a program type Command+Q or choose quit from the application menu - just clicking the red circle will only close the window, but not quit most applications. You can tell if an application is still running by the little triangle below the dock icon. Double-clicking an application icon will not do anything if the application is already running.
Most applications do have a menu command - normally under the File, View, or Window menus to bring the main window back, the shortcut is often, but not always, Command+N.

I have taken the opposite approach. My iTunes library and I have the same problem if it has not been mounted when iTunes launches. I created an Automator app that mounts the music then launches iTunes. Try mounting the drive the launch Automator to create the following workflow.
    1. Connect to server and select the external drive.
    2. Us the Launch Application step to launch iTunes.
Unmount the external drive and test the workflow. If it works save the workflow as an app and use that to launch iTunes.

  • How do I enter serial number after downloading elements 11 trial version to convert to full version

I followed instructions to install elements 11 trial software. I was given a serial # and was never prompted to enter the number. What ,when and how do I do this now?
This was to convert to full version after entering the serial number

    Hi kjbplumb,
When you launch the software it will prompt you to enter the serial number.
Else you can launch the application and navigate to the 'Help' menu at the top and select 'Activate'. The activation screen would come up seeking the serial number from you.
Enter the serial number and the trial would be converted to full version.

  • Advice needed on how to track down a program after 3 mins upti

Hi... really struggling with tracking down a daemon/script that is running on my system.... have openbox, with some gnome, xfce and lxde programs to make it more gui based. Wondering if someone can can help me track down the program that is over-riding my synaptics config?
Basically, I have a synaptics config file in xorg.conf.d that is read and applied at boot. Then at around 3min 28 secs of uptime, this config gets overridden. I have stared at the output of top to see if there is anything showing up at around that time, but I not noticing anything!
    The arch wiki mentions;
Gnome settings daemon may override existing settings (for example ones set in xorg.conf.d) for which there is no equivalent in any of the graphical configuration utilities. It is possible to stop gnome from touching mouse settings at all:
    Run dconf-editor
    Edit /org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/mouse/
    Uncheck the active setting
It will now respect your system's existing synaptics configuration.
however, this option is not available, so I am assuming this is not the cause (might be mistaken?), but am now lost. I have tried to remove dconf, but it has dependencies I use for smbclient, namely gvfs.
Any ideas / help / guidance or what ever would be great!
    Thanks

Oh, overridden. My bad, I read "overwritten" by accident. My apologies. Unfortunately I don't think I can help. Sorry :\. lsof should still help you if what you're trying to do is track though. GDB wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

  • How to re-install a program after purchase and initial install?

    How do I re-install illustrator?
I have two licenses and installed one. We are no longer using that computer. I need to re-install the first license a another computer and access my second license.

    Natasha,
You should be able to just install the exact same way as on the first computer.
You can activate/use any Adobe application on two computers (but only use one at a time).
If you need to use it on yet another one, you will need to deactivate it on the first one.
An afterthought: Have you bought two licences? In that case you can install on four computers.

  • How do I recover iLife programs after a hard drive crash?

My hard drive on my MacBook Pro recently crashed.  The data was backed up on Carbonite, but the application programs were not.  I had recently upgraded the iLife programs to iLife 2011, but it does not look like those programs are still there.  Is there a way to re-install the iLife programs without re-purchasing them?  I am also interested in doing the same thing for my Word and Excel programs, as I don't have the original discs anymore for those?

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
For items you cannot re-download use a third-party utility such as Phone to Mac.

  • Execute program after boot

    Hi,
I use some Bash scripts to make backups of my data using rsync and cp -l.
To decide at boot time, if a backup should be made, I append DOBACKUP=yupp (yupp=yes, see problem below) to the kernel line in Grub. The variable DOBACKUP can be accessed within the init environment. I added a simple rc.d scripts that checks if the variable is set and starts the backup. However, this is not the nicest way, since the boot of the system is not finished yet. If the backup script hangs, I don't have any console. How can I execute a program after the computer is booted?
Furthermore, I don't want to execute the backup script in the background, since it asks for some user input.
What is the correct way in doing this?
Another strange behavior occurs, if I set DOBACKUP=yes. In this case, I get a blank screen and not boot output is shown (but it seems that the computer boots correctly, just without any output on the monitor). Thus I use yupp instead of yes to indicate the need for a backup: DOBACKUP=no or DOBACKUP=yupp work both as expected.

Seems clear to me that you need a logged-in user to provide user input - run the script from your shellrc at login time.
Either that, or the script should be refactored to not require user input.
Deamonize the backup script? In that case I don't get any feedback if everything works fine.
My intention is to install arch on a USB disk. A windows user can plug the disk in and start the computer. Arch Linux is booted from the USB disk and the backup is automatically started. However, a short message that everything worked fine before the script shuts the PC down would be preferable.
To keep the backup simple, the login idea is also not the best choice...

  • PSE remains active in background after exit. How can I stop the program completely?

PSE remains active in background after exit. How can I stop the program completely?
Is there any command line option to force PSE to stop completely after exiting the GUI?
Opening the Windows Task Manager and killing the PSE process is not a solution!
(Context: I want to start PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe from another program with an image filename as command line argument. This other program waits in background until PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe has finished and pops up again after that. Since PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe continues to run silently in background, the other program will never come back.)

Hi - having the same problem with PSE process not ending on exit. Have you had any luck in resolving the issue?
Any advice would be appreciated. TIA

  • How do i enter a serial number for an existing program that resides on this computer?

how do i enter a serial number for an existing adobe acrobat xi stnd program that resides on this computer?

    Hi joanp65961507,
Could you please specify more on the same.
Let me know if there is any message window that prompts you to enter the serial number.
You might not have activated Acrobat on your system after buying it which is why it is asking to provide the serial number.
Refer: Installing and Activating a Try & Buy product
In case, you don't know your product serial number, then please refer the following link:

Please let me know more so that I can analyze the issue and help you out with the same.

I just purchased a MacBookPro after having a MacBook.  I have ILife, IWorks and Office for Mac.  How do I get those programs on to my MacBook Pro?  I will still use my MacBook at work so I need those programs to remain on it as well.

You need a Firewire cable to run between the two Macs.  Using Utility>Migration Assistant running on your new MacBook Pro, transfer what you want (with all the preferences and such) from your MacBook to your MBP.  Here's more info from Apple.
You might have an issue with the Serial number for Office, but hopefully you have that around.
    Hope this helps.
