How to re-install my Ethernet on MacPro ?

Yesterday, I tried installing and using the Witopi VPN to get access to Hulu (I'm in Europe and thus have no access to Hulu, Spotify etc). It didn't work, though.
After removing it again, the Ethernet on my MacPro doesn't work. It works on my MacMini on the same network) and the Airport works also. Just not the ethernet on the MacPro.
Is there somehow to start over with a fresh ethernetconnection on my MacPro ? I've tried removing it and adding a new, but even though I seem to make sure that the settings are like the ones on my Mini, it just says "Cable is not connected" (which it is)

Couple of questions:
Are you running 10.6?
Do you have custom locations?
Finally, if you access your Network pane of system preferences, on the left hand side if you don't see an ethernet, hit the plus sign choose the interface ethernet and click create. (This is assuming 10.6, 10.5 or earlier may appear slightly different).
The other thing you can try is clicking on locations in the top of the window when you have Network Preferences open and choose edit locations. Click the plus sign give your new location a name and click done. Now, click Apply. Close the network window. If the top of the window doesn't have your new location in the drop down, choose the new location. Hit Apply. Check your Ethernet connection.
Hope this helps,
John

  • How would I install windows in my Macpro

    Hello there;
I, have Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 and would like to install windows 8 in it. Could you please show how to do so.
    Thanks.

You can use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows. Instructions can be found here:
http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ and the Boot Camp discussion community can be found here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp
Or, you can install Windows using a virtual machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox. Instructions for each can be found at their respective sites.

  • I just bought a new MacBook Air with Lion. How can I install Lion on my MacPro?

If the way I get Lion is only pre-installed on the new computer, I'm wondering how I would go about installing it on another Mac that I already own. Thanks!

Apple may have used the App store version of Lion as a temporary distribution channel for its brief free upgrade program in July, but Apple has never in the past continuously licensed the OS that comes with a new computer for use also on additional computers. The situation with Lion is therefore nothing new. The App store product is equivalent to the old "retail DVD" that you could buy for previous OS versions - they are both  meant for older computers that shipped with earlier OS versions, and neither is free.  The difference in the case of Lion is that you are getting something similar to the old "family-pack" retail DVD at no extra cost.
Details are in the Lion OS X 7.2 license agreement, available here.
    http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/macosx1072.pdf
It includes the following, which makes clear that the new-product license and the App store license are different entities:
    2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
    A. Standard and Preinstalled Apple Software License. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, unless you obtained the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, on Apple- branded physical media (e.g., on an Apple-branded USB memory stick) or under a volume license, maintenance or other written agreement from Apple, you are granted a limited, non- exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple- branded computer at any one time. For example, these standard single-copy license terms apply to you if you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple-branded hardware.
    B. License from Mac App Store or on Physical Media. If you obtained a license for the Apple Software from the Mac App Store or on Apple-branded physical media, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License and as permitted by the Mac App Store Usage Rules set forth in the App Store Terms and Conditions (http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/) (“Usage Rules”), you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license:
    (i ) to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of the Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer running Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control;

  • How best to install an Ethernet/AirPort combo on extended network TC?

I have replaced my 1st generation TC with a 4th generation model. While this swap worked, I am left with a few lingering questions.
    1. I reconfigured the 1st generation TC to extend the AirPort network. However, when I plug an Ethernet cable input into the unit at the extended point, my wireless network goes ker-flooie. Why is this? (An output cable, standing alone from the TC, works fine; only the input causes difficulties. But I am, of course, with this configuration only extending AirPort, not the faster Ethernet network.)
    2. In setting up my remote computer(s) should I choose "AirPort" or "AirPort 5Hz"?
    My setup:
One Mac mini upstairs is attached to the new TC. No issues there.
Another Mac mini downstairs is attached via over-the-roof cabling to the TC via the home Ethernet system. No issues there either.
An iMac at a remote location finds the Internet through AirPort. It is in close proxmity to an AE that also extends the network. (This unit achieves faster response times after I connected an Ethernet cable between the AE and the unit, thereby creating two IP addresses at this point on the network.) That where the problem occurs whenever I connect the extended TC to the Ethernet.
I would like to use the three unpopulated Ethernet slots on the old (remote) TC extender to connect to a AV-based music and video system.

Connecting devices to "extend" using wireless only always imposes an overhead bandwidth penalty since the "extending" device must receive the wireless signal and then re-broadcast it.
By the time the extending device receives the wireless signal, the bandwith has usually fallen off quite a bit, since this occurs with distance and any obstructions in the signal path.
Let's say you have a pretty good wireless signal where the extending device is located, and of the 130 Mpbs bandwidth available near the router, maybe 80-90 Mbps is present at the extedning location. That is what gets "extended", plus there is always some loss as well.
Connecting using Ethernet is always the best option in terms of performance because the network bandwidth is preserved over Ethernet...up to 300+ feet with virtually no loss. That's the way any decent commercial network with multiple wireless access points would be designed.

  • How do I install an Airport card on a G3?

I bought this Powerbook G3 a while ago, with only Ethernet connection, and I finally broke down and bought an Airport card, after trying some of the other stuff! I have the card 90% into the slot on the left back side of my Powerbook but how do you get it all the way in? Without a hammer? LOL It came with an install disc but it says, "you cannot install Airport on this volume (my Macintosh HD). Your Airport software is currently up to date" but in System Profiler "No information found" under Airport card?
My Imac I'm waiting on reinstall discs, from Apple, the 'book hasn't froze in at least 2 - 3 weeks! I have music playing on that I want to migrate here!
    Thanks, Willy

    WillyBlues,
    Please identify your powerbook G3:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24604
If you have the Powerbook G3 FireWire M7572 "Pismo", there is an original AirPort card available, but it installs ONLY under the keyboard, not the PCMCIA/CardBus slot on the left side of the 'book, plus it works only in the Pismo. Here is what it looks like and how it is installed:
    http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=10061
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58581
If you have a WiFi PC card, please identify the card and software in addition to what version software you are using.
The PC card on the left side will always extend beyond the frame about 1". You should feel resistance in the last 1" of travel, then you may have to push hard to fully seat it. A PC card icon will then appear in the menu bar. It's possible the PC card slot is in the locked position; read this article on how the slot works.

If you have a Mid 2010 model: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. If later then see below:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you have an earlier model:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • How do i install tiger on external drive?

ola, i have 2 dead 17" flatscreen (swivelhead) ppc imacs, i'm desperately want to resurrect one of them, having replaced the power supply (no thanks to apple and foxconn?) and it also has a faulty logic board (no thanks to apple?).... someone in cape town south africa, apparently can do component level repairs...... i have to ready the imac with an up to date 10.4 (tiger) OS from my mac pro running snow leopard.....
    how do i-
    1. install 10.4 onto an external drive and if possible
    2. update leopard on the external drive before i put it back into the faulty imac?
    thx
    francois

Installing Tiger on a drive means restarting the master computer (MacPro) using the Tiger install disk. Since MacPro uses the Intel chip, I don't believe you will be able to restart that computer with the Tiger disk. If you can attach an external drive (using firewire) to a PowerPC computer, I suggest you use the Tiger install disk on the external drive to install 10.4. I would then attach it to the "dead" iMac (using firewire) and try and restart the computer while holding down the option key. Click on the external drive and see if the computer starts up. If it does, you probably have a corrupted operating system on your iMac. At this point you can try either to run DiskWarrior on the iMac or just use the Tiger install disk to replace the old system in the iMac (or reformat the drive and start fresh). Hope this helps.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

your post title and the message within seem to contradict themselves.
More information from you might be helpful as in  what packages did you install during the installation process? Did you have network connection during the install? Are there any errors that you get when booting.

You must first upgrade to 10.7.5 or later.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

You can upgrade the firmware to enable Network Restore: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. After upgrading you can do the following:
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
