How to re-number Film Rolls

I understand how to change the title and date of a Film Roll, but I would like to re-number the Film Rolls in my library to have them in the same order as their dates. Does anyone know how to do that?
(Reason for me to change the Film Roll numbers: In smart albums, if "View>Film Rolls" is clicked on, the Film Rolls are sorted by roll number, not by the date assigned to the roll. I know that I could sort photos by dates, but then the Film Rolls are not displayed).
Thanks!

Yes, that's what I did and it did not solve the problem. It seems to be a bug.
Again, here is what I did, step-by-step:
1. Added 1 picture, created 1 Roll "Roll 1"
2. Added another picture, created a second roll "Roll 2"
3. Addes a third picture, created a third roll "Roll 3"
4. Called Roll 1 "1980", Roll 2 "1982" and Roll 3 "1981" (Order is now: 1980, 1982, 1981).
5. Changed date of "1980" to 1/1/1980, of "1982" to 1/1/1982 and "1981" to 1/1/1981 (Order is now: 1980, 1981, 1982 in LIBRARY).
6. When I create a smart album, the order is 1980, 1982, 1981.
So while everything is fine in the library, smart albums don't show the rolls in proper order. They seem to ignor the date assigned to the film roll and keep sorting by the initial order of the film roll as they were created.

  • How do you keep film roll data when exporting?

I'm moving to a newer computer and wanted to transfer my large library to the new setup. I have film rolls organized with original photo dates, but when I import the library in the new iPhoto setup from a hard drive all the dates change to the day I originally imported them by scanning, not the dates of the photos themselves. How can I keep all the film roll data I worked hard on to organize the photos?

I hope that someone comes along soon to tell you a better way, but in the meantime, here is what I do when I need to reset the date.
Open an event and click on one of the photos.  Select the 'Photos' pull-down menu and choose 'Batch Change'.  This allows you to change the date for all of the photos in the event.
I decided it was too much work to do batch change dates when I moved my photos to iPhoto four years ago so I keep most of pre-DSLR photos in a Picture file outside of iPhoto.  Inconvenient at times, but I don't need to access older photos all that often.  When I do, I just pull a folder of photos into iPhoto and batch change the date then.
I am sure there must be an easier way; I just stumbled onto this accidentally.

  • "View Film Rolls" is not Highlighted.... how can I get to it? (iPhoto 6)

"View Film Rolls" is not Highlighted.... how can I get to it? (iPhoto 6)

Since you're using the term Rolls you must be running iPhoto 6 or earlier. For future problems be sure you post in the iPhoto 6 or forum.
For this problem the View File rolls will only Be sure you're clicked on the Library. That menu item is not available in an album or other item. If you have clicked the library icon first and it's still grayed out close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and then try again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How can I change the order of photos in a film roll?

I've scanned in images and then imported them to i-photo and they are not in order on the film roll in i-photo. Does anyone know how I can re-order them within the roll?
    Thanks
    Ruth

There's only two way to arrange photos in the roll itself while having the rolls visible in the organize window. They are last file created first or last file created last.
You can create an album of that roll and then arrange them manually, by date, by file name. If by date or file name and you want them sorted alphanumerically or chronologically you'll have to make sure the check box, "Place most recent photos at the top" is unchecked in the iPhoto Preferences/Appearances pane.

there is a thumbnial size slider in either the lower right hand or left hand corner of the iPhoto window - does sliding it resolve your issue?

  • How to put photos back into two film rolls which are now emply.

For a few months my iPhoto has been unable to do things it should be able to do according to iPhoto documentation, such as put slideshows in a folder.
Yesterday I titled about 50 film rolls that previously were unnamed and deleted quite a few slideshows. Now, when I look in two very important film rolls in my iPhoto 6.0.4 Library, their over 1,000 photos are no longer there. My iPhoto trash is empty.
I have 3 recent backups. One, a zip backup is (along with my iPhoto Library) in my pictures folder. A backup iPhoto Library & zipped Library are on an external drive.
Can I get just the missing photos from one of these backups into my current library? ______ How? __

I was under the impression it was there so you can back up all your files.
iCloud is not intended as a backup, but rather as a central storage for your documents and data, so you can keep them up to date and  accessible on all devices.
For your photos in iCloud you will need iCloud Photo Library. This is still a Beta version, and has not yet been released for the Mac, but is already available on iPads and iPhones with iOS 8.
See this support document:    iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ
You can enable iCloud Photo Library beta on your iPad, and then your photos will be stored in iCloud. Your Mac can see these photos using the Photos Beta app on the icloud webpage at www.icloud.com .
In a few weeks or so, when Apple will release MacOS X 10.10.3, the new Photos.app on the Mac will be able to migrate your iPhoto Library to iCloud   Photo Library, as described here:   Apple - OS X - Photos Preview
Just wait a bit longer, until iCloud id ready for your Photos library.

  • How do I print a hard copy my list of Film Rolls (text only)?

    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Besides the obvious of typing the info yourself into a word processor document?
You can take a screen shot of that portion of the iPhoto window showing the films roll list using the application 'Grab,' found in your Applications folder.
Just open it, and under 'Capture' choose 'selection' then drag the cursor over the list of Film Rolls visible in your iPhoto window. You will see a red outline of what will be captured. When you release the cursor, a picture of that selection is taken. You can print that out.
If you have more film rolls than appear in the window, just take the first shot, then scroll down and repeat.

  • Sort by film roll in iPhoto 8

    Come across an interesting problem.
A friend has a digital camera that resets the time and date every time the battery is charged, and not surprisingly after a while no longer bothers to re-enter the details, hence the date is always sometime in year 2000.
This has never been a problem as iPhoto sorted the pictures by film roll, so there was always a semblance of order. I must add that the original titles of the image number have been changed to descriptive picture titles.
I have just helped them to import their picture library onto the shiny new MBP, 10.5.5, iPhoto 8 (having told them how fantastic events is) and it has turned into a can of worms. All the images are now sorted by date order which means they are all over the place, and arrange by filmroll is no longer one of the options.
Anyone any ideas? Is there any way to get import pictures from iphoto 6 without it reformatting for events, or can i get iPhoto 8 to sort by iPhoto 6 filmrolls?
    Thanks

Yeah the iPhoto 6 library is still on their old laptop, so that could work.
Do you know whether importing into iPhoto 8 would then keep that same film roll order, with over 6,000 pictures they are quite keen to keep a semblance of continuity.
You do NOT import the library
You must use iPhoto 6 on the laptop and rename any rolls - any roll that uses the default name of rollxxx will come across as an unnamed roll and it gets very confusing in iphoto '08 - once you have an iPhoto 6 library with no default named rolls in it quit iPhoto on both systems and drag the iPhoto library on the new computer to the trash and then drag the iPhoto 6 library from the laptop to the pictures folder on the new computer and launch iPhoto there - this will convert the library and keep the iPhoto 6 roll structure
The event order may be an issue since it is time based - there is a command under the photos menu to batch change date and time so you can use iPhoto '08 to restore the desired date structure

  • Numbering of film rolls in iPhoto

When you rename a film roll in iPhoto., the original roll number disappears.  How can I retrieve the roll number?
(In the Desktop & Screensaver pref. pane, the sidebar only shows roll numbers.)  I'm using iPhoto. 5.0.4, and Desktop & Screen Saver v.3.0.1

Yet Software Update says there are no upgrades from iPhoto 5.0.4.
Why should I have to pay for an Upgrade?  I don't understand what is going on here.
Software update will only show the free updates within the same version number and not the paid upgrades. Since you are running Snow Leopard, you could upgrade to iPhoto '11 and other iLife '11 applications, but that would require to buy the boxed retail version from Amazon or eBay. Upgrading to Mavericks, as Old Toad outlined, would enable you to buy the currently sold versions from the AppStore.
The advantage of the newer iPhoto versions with Mavericks: You could use iCloud, Faces and Places, and buy print products from Apple's print products store. Plus many bug fixes.

  • Will Not Display by Film Roll

I can't figure this out: When I am on the "library" selection, I used
to see a display of all the film rolls, listed separately. Now all I get is a scroll of photos with no indication of what film roll they are on.
How do I set the view so I can view the photos grouped by film rolls?

    Hi Bill,
Actually the same thing happened to me under different circumstances.
I was dragging a group of five images to a keyword in the keyword panel.
I dropped them on the keyword and in front of my eyes the library images were shifting. (I have my view set to rolls). When I was done being shocked I discovered all my images were in one roll. This was not acceptable to me as I really like my dated roll organization.
I had recently done a backup so I dragged out the messed up library and dragged my backup into the Pictures folder.
I no longer use that keyword panel for keywords. I use the "get info" pop over window to keyword my images.
I really don't know what your iPhoto Library looks like in the Finder. If you can navigate there and tell me if your images are still in their dated folders, I can tell you what to do from there.
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
If your images are still in their dated rolls in the Finder, then you can get those rolls back, but will lose Albums, keywords, slideshow...basically everything , but you will get your roll organization back.
You would follow the instructions on Page 2 for the "add to the library" method.

  • IPhoto 6 conversion results in lost film rolls

I just upgraded to iPhoto 6 from iPhoto 5.x. My iPhoto Library contains more than 5000 photos. The conversion process completed successfully and all my photos and albums appear to be there.
However... about half way down the list of photos (at Roll 375 of 414), the Library conversion process apparently lumped dozens of my film rolls together into one gigantic roll with 1700+ photos. Then.. it continues on with rolls correctly allocated to the end of the file (roll 414).
Anyone have any idea what is causing this flaw in the conversion process? And more importantly... is there anyway I can get my film rolls back?
BTW... 'Film Rolls' is selected under the View menu, and toggling it on/off does not solve the problem.

Ok. after first panicking and not reading further on how to fix iphoto, i calmed down and did the reading i should have done first. Seems that holding down the option and command key at iphoto boot-up initiates a rebuild command.
I did a complete rebuild and all the photos are back in order. Not sure why this occurred but I'm happy that it was fixable.

  • IPhoto5 to iPhoto 6 upgrade: All Film Rolls in 1 Roll Now

    Hi,
I have an external Firewire HD with my entire iPhoto library on it (over 13,000 photos/11 GB). I have back-up DVDs of each year (1999-2005) that I burned through iPhoto. Prior to upgrading to iPhoto 6 on the FW HD, I placed each folder from off the burned DVDs from IP5 (1999-2005) in the iPhoto library and then when I launched IP6 it asked me if I wanted to make a new library before importing the photos, and I agreed, yes. All the photos were imported, but they are all in one film roll. When I check an individual photo, it appears to still have all the meta-data (including the actual day it was shot). How do I fix this ? I am semi-savvy on OS X, but it appears the semi is the operative word here. I have "View as Rolls" selected under View. After doing a search here and reviewing Lori Diloreto's website (excellent resource-thanks Lori !), I just can't get my head around what I am doing wrong. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks and regards, Chris

Do you have a backup copy of your V5 library as before you added the other folders and updated? If so move it into your Pictures folder, moving the other one to the desktop and identify as questionable. Now launch iPhoto and it will tell you it needs to update that library. Your should retain your rolls, keywords, etc. for those photos in the library at that time. Once you have the new V6 library up and running, mount a DVD disk and copy the folders of pictures to the desktop. Now import each folder into iPhoto from there. You should get a new roll for each folder imported. Do that for each disk.
If those DVD disks are titled iPhoto Library then they are in the iPhoto format and will be imported differently. The will have files in the library folder similar to those in your V5 library folder, thumbail files, data files, etc.
Again, starting from your old V5 library update just it to V6. Then put one of the DVDs in the drive and it will appear in iPhoto's Source pane directly underneath the Library icon - like this. You can drag that disc icon onto the Library icon to import all of the photos on that DVD disc and you'll keep keywords, comments, rolls, etc. intact. Do that for each disk.

  • Iphoto 6 - photos in my various film rolls are mixed up.

I take a lot shots for my residential home insurance business. My work flow is as follows.
Take many shots of many home during the day. up to 100 for each home
    Then at my computer
    - create a separate new film roll for each home.
    - drag each new film roll to the side bar creating an album of each home
    - working in the album delete photos not required and edit the few that i need.
    - then within each album i use the photo>batch change>title>text.. adding a suffix of A, B, C and so on as i need so that the end result is the first 10 shots are titled A-1 to A-9 and then next are B1 to B9 and so on until the home is done and then i repeat for each home.
The result is that my library of photos has many many shots labeled A1 or A2 or C3 etc.. but this has not been a problem since the shots are contained within separate film rolls never confusing the shots.
But now when i look back at older film rolls, they seem to have shots mixed up from various other film rolls.
Any thoughts? Would appreciate the help.
