I replaces my internal DVD drive with a SSD drive.
When I start the dvd program player or a software like Toast, I get , of course, an error message.
I saw on internet the way to edit (with HewFiend program) and change this
/Système/Bibliothèque/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/version/A/DVDPlayback
but it still doesn't work.
How can I use an external DVD drive ? (and burner)

No doubt it would be cheaper to add an External like a Lacie or one from any number of manufactures
You can if you choose have a new CD/DVD Drive and burner installed and there are several different vendors that will do this for you or you can do it your self.

No DV port in camcorder. Just a yellow AV port/hole. I did find a Canopus ADVC110 device in a box that was bought several years ago to convert VHS tapes onto DVD's. Can I use this with a Mac? Could I connect a dvd player to the Canopus and transfer the disks onto my Mac? Or, connect the camcorder via AV port to the Canopus and that to the Mac and transfer that way? Thanks again!

I understand that you are having trouble with an external dvd player attached to your notebook.
What is the full product number for your notebook? Please read the following if you need help in finding that.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Does your notebook already have a built in dvd drive?
Did you install the drivers and software that came with the external dvd player? If there was originally no DVD player in your notebook, it is likely that there is no dvd player application loaded.
So in that event I would recommend installing from the software disk with the DVD drive.

How do I organize photos in DVD size folders, by topic, by date, etc? I plan to set up a new archive on an external hard drive (1 TB) for about 7500 photos. Some from a series of XP files, the rest from iPhoto. I use iPhoto11 on Lion with a 2011 MacBoo

What are you actually trying to do? Why do you need "DVD size" folders if you're creatng an Archive on an external hard drive?

You can export while writing the metadata to the file in most cases.
Tne only way I know is to copy photos from the Windows to folders on my HD, then copy and paste photos or albums or events to HD, then create a new folder and fill it to the appropriate DVD size.
HD? Another HD? You use HD there in a way that makes no sense. What's the point of 'DVD size'?

Does this have any relation to the previous questions? You know you can delete from iPhoto, right?
You're somewhat confused and you need to
1. Decide what exactly you want to do
2. Then go about it.
If I understand you correctly - and there's no guarantee that I do - the easiest thing is to bring all your Photos into iPhoto and do everything from there.
You can have an archive on an external disk, you can sort and select and edit with or via iPhoto

My cd/dvd drive quit working and is not found in device manager so I purchased an external cd/dvd rw. Now I am having other issues with installing software and windows updates so I would like to format hard drive. Can this be done with external cd drive, if so how do I boot from it? presario v6000 laptop windows vista 32bit os.

Restart the notebook >> start tapping F10 key >> go to configuration menu >> Boot Order >> select the Ext DVD drive as 1st boot device >> save and exit >> Insert the recovery disc >> restart the PC >> press any key when prompted >> follow the instructions..

How to install Leopard from an external DVD reader?

Hi,
I've bought Leopard today. unfortunately, it's not yet installed on my PowerBook. As my SuperDrive is dead, I use now an external DVD (Lacie Portable DVD-RW), but it doesn't work. I can read the Leopard install DVD, but when it reboot, it reboot on my current installation.
I've tried the following during the boot sequence:
- alt pressed, but I can only see my main HDD
- c pressed, but I boot on my current installation
Can you tell me if it is possible to install Leopard from an external DVD, and how can I do that ?

Have you burned Discs with other programs using this computer? Are you certain that you have a drive that will burn discs?

How can I interchange a Toshiba external drive with my Mac and Windows? It only works read only with the Mac.

I bought a Toshiba external drive IT and I can copy files to it from my Macbook Pro 5,3. I would like to know how canI interchange files with Windows and the Mac.

If the disk is read only, it is formatted for Windows and the Mac can't write to it

Trying to upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.3 with external dvd reader

Hi everyone.
I have a bit of a question.
I have two macs; one is an iMac, 500mhz running 10.2.8 which I bought used off of Craigslist as a backup computer for whn my home PC finally dies. and the other is an eMac running 10.3.3 (this eMac is use at my photography studio, in a isolated non-internet accessable enviroment).
My PC recently died, and so I took the iMac home to use as my replacement.
I wanted to take the dvds with 10.3 on it and upgrade my iMac at home, because it is still on 10.2.8.
However, the iMac only has a cd-reader tray on it.
So I thought that I could take my external DVD drive, hook it up to the USB on the iMac, and I coudl read the dvds that way, but it won't work at all. The dvds are read, but when the computer auto-reboots it isn't reading the drive until after the computer fully boots up.
Is there any way I can get this to work?

A few issues to consider:
A. What you are doing is illegal and violates Apple's software license.
B. You cannot use the special system installers that come with one computer to install OS X on a different model. They usually are special builds intended only for the Mac model with which they came.
C. You cannot boot the computer from USB device, you need a Firewire device.
D. Panther generally doesn't take kindly to installing from an external drive, it usually prefers installing from an internal optical drive.
E. A legal version of Panther comes on CDs. You can purchase it at www.applerescue.com.

How do I copy a DVD to my Mac with an external drive.

I have tried to make a copy a DVD Nd although it seemed copy on e it had finished it didn't look like it was in the right type of folder and won't play back.
Any ideas as I am texting to copy them so I can put them on my iPad.

Sorry but copying commercial dvds is considered illegal and against the terms of use on this forum. That being said do a Google search for Handbrake. That's about all I can tell you.

To what password are you referring? Do you mean your user account's admin password? Or do you mean the master password for File Vault or do you mean a Firmware Password?
For an admin password:
Forgot Your Account Password
For Snow Leopard and earlier
     Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
For Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
     Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
     instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
     Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
     OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
     /sbin/fsck -yf
     If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
     you do. If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
     then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
     mount -uw /
     cd /private/var/db/netinfo
     mv local.nidb local.old
     rm ../.AppleSetupDone
     shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
   1. Type fsck -fy
   2. Type mount -uw /
   3. Type passwd <username>

If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
• iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
• DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
• Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
• Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD

How to read a DVD with a DVD_RTAV folder?

Hi Folks, A client brought us a stack of DVD-RW discs that they burned on a VCR/DVD combo unit. Unfortunately, they burned them all in VR mode which is not entirely compatible with most stand alone DVD players. Actually these discs aren't compatible with anything else at all. They will play back in the unit that recorded them, but not anywhere else. I have read in some other forums that you can open the DVD_RTAV folder and pull out the .vro file, change the extension to .mpg and be able to use that file to produce a normal dvd. Unfortunately, when I put any of these discs into my Mac, the DVD_RTAV folder shows as being empty. It also has a red circle with a white dash through it. I've tried MPEG StreamClip and several other utilities to try to find the .vro files but nothing sees anything in the folder. I even used Terminal to have the Finder show invisible files, still nothing.
The one thing that did work was to use Toast. It recognized that there were video files on the disc and allowed me to add them to its Media Browser window. From there I was able to add them to a new blank disc image and save the image. The image then mounts as a normal DVD. The only problem is Toast is apparently doing some type of encoding in the background, so it took a very long time to do this, and I'm guessing I lost a bit of quality during the process.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to extract the content from these discs in order to make a normal DVD?

What exactly is your problem? Is it, (a) your Mac doesn't read your external disk, or, (b) you can't retrieve your videos, or, (c) you can't play them, or, (d) you were able to play them at one point, but not any more.
What version of Mac OS X are you using, what app are you trying to play your videos with, what happens when you do, and what error messages, if any, do you get?

Drag the folders to the external drive, and if prompted, click Authenticate. You'll probably be asked for an administrator password.
