How to read file created in Mac OS 9 in Mac OS 10.4.9 on a Intel core mac

I just brought a Macbook Pro a few months ago. I can't read the file that I have created in the Mac OS 9 environment now as the files don't have file extension and OS 9 cannot work on a Intel core Mac.
What should I do? My old Mac does not work anymore.
Can I install the Mac OS 9 in an external harddisk and read the files?

If you don't have MS Office 2004 for OS X then you have some other options for using those files:
NeoOffice Aqua is an integrated application almost fully compatible with MS Office 2004. This product is freeware Open Source.
ThinkFree Office is Office 2004 substitute that includes word processing, spreadsheet, and graphics components. Almost 100 percent Office 2004 compatible.
Apple's iWorks '06 includes Pages and Keynote which are word processing and presentation software that can read, edit, and save files in Word and Powerpoint formats.
Papyrus is another integrated application with word processing, graphics, and data/spreadsheet capabilities that can read Office files.
Tables is an excellent spreadsheet application that will import Excel spreadsheets. However, it is not 100 percent compatible with Excel although it does provide all of Excel's basic features (but not macros, charts, and the like.)
Other word processing applications available include Nisus Writer and TextEdit. The latter comes with OS X and can open Word files. Other spreadsheet applications are Mesa and Mariner Calc. You will find these and the others mentioned at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Statistical software is another matter. The only freeware application I'm aware of that would be the equal of SAS is R, an Open Source project. Other stat packages are:
Aabel
Stata
SPSS
Jump (from SAS Labs)
Instat
Of course Adobe products are available for OS X including Photoshop, InDesign, etc.
Not all of the above products are universal binaries but many are. You can find demos for most at the two previously mentioned sites.
Generally, you can associate any file with any application by selecting the file and pressing COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the section labeled "Open with" select the desired application from the drop down menu. If you want all similar files associated with that application, then click on the Change All button. You can also open a file from within the desired application then do a Save As to write a new version in the application's native format. Note that often applications hide the extension (it isn't visible in the filename, but can be changed in the Get Info window.) Here's a master list of file extensions.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.

  • How do I get more memory for my Macbook Pro Spring 2010 13-inch with 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo?

How do I get more memory for my Macbook Pro spring 2010 13-inch with 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Apple says no memory currently available for that model. I have 4 GB memory and 3.99 used. Help!

Now I'm confused. This is the one Crucial told me to get:
    CT3309356 - 4GB DDR3 PC3-8500 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V 512Meg x 64
    $45.99
Also what do you mean that actual memory is 16GB but with Apple it's 8?
When I go to the "About this Mac" it says Memory 4G 1067 MHz DDR3, then when I go to System Report it says
     Memory Slot
    Bank 0/ DIMM0 2G DDR3 1067 MHZ OK
    Bank 1/ DIMM0 2G DDR3 1067 MHZ OK
Sorry I'm clueless. Just don't want to buy something that messes up my machine more than it already is.
The Crucial site appears to have recommended the correct spec 4gB RAM stick for your model. Please note that you will need to remove the existing sticks of RAM to install new, so you will need 2x4gB to get to 8gB.
When your model of computer was designed/built, it was tested with readily available 2x4gB (8gB). After release RAM retailers have tested it with higher amounts, and Apple didn't update their quoted specs.

  • Need help opening files created on Mac in PC

Please help!  Our old Mac is down and I need to access some files on our network that were created in PM 5.  I'm now using a PC that I downloaded the trial of PM 7 onto in hopes of being able to access these files and convert them to InDesign CS4.
    Here's my problem:
When I try to open a PM 5 (or even a PM 6.5) file created on the Mac using the PM 7 on the PC I get this message:  "File cannot be translated to PC and converted to new version at the same time."  Does anyone know how to get around this?  Is there another program that will translate the Mac file to PC?

    miz_nrg wrote:
I've read on here that people running Windows XP with SP3 have also had issues with PageMaker files.  Could that be the root of my issues?
this only applies to CS2 and PM files.
A co-worker has a MacBook that they're going to bring in next week so I can transfer the files.  Is this just going to be a matter of me opening the files on the Mac and saving them as a pmd file on our network drive, then going into my PC and opening them in either PM7 or InDesign (which is where I'll be doing all the updates)?
This will not work. Pagemaker needs to run in Classic on a Mac running OSX. A MacBook is an Intel chip and does not support Classic. You either need an old Mac that boots OS9 or a PowerPC Mac that will run Classic. As long as they are PM6 or better they should open no problem in IDCS3 and 4.
My offer still stands if you need to get started.

  • File created on Mac wont open on PC

    The Problem:
I created a catalog file in InDesign CS6 (Before CC) on a Mac (See machine info below) and my Manager who works with a PC (Windows 7) can not open my file. The problem is that the file will only open when certain pictures are not linked. Whenever I add certain product image photos to the InDesign File she gets the error message below. When these product photos are embeded the file does not open. But it's only certain files.
Then I have to start over with a copy of the file thats missing the picture files in question then it opens on a PC.
The File is never open in another application. I close indesign all together when my manager tries to access the file in question.  And I have never installed any plug-ins. I dont know how the "InDesign can't support this file" when it's an .indd
    My Machine info:
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Processor  2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    What I've Tried:
    - Open the mac files as they are.
    - Resave the mac files as old indesign format and open them on PC
    - Export from mac as IDML files and open those files on the pc.
    - Open the file on the pc as a "copy"
    - Use adobe extension manager to remove all third party plug-ins
    - Renamed Image files
    - Created new files of images in question, (in .Tiff and .PSD)
And none of those have resolved the issue.
    Questions:
Can Memory/Hardware play a part in getting this error message? (My Manager uses a machine thats at least 5 years old)
Can using PSD files as links in an InDesign file create errors like this? (Many of the files we link are PSD files)
Can this be an issue of having the file stored on an external network drive? (The file is stored on a network external drive)

That error message typically means the file is still open (or ID thinks it is because there's still a .idlk file in the folder), or the file extension has been changed to .indd on a file that is not actually an InDesign document.
It seems remotely possible that you'd get it with a linked .indd file from CC opeing in CS6, but you wouldn't have been able to place a CC .indd file in CS6 originally, which means you would only see this scenario when opening a .idml file from CC.

    Mac/Windows Networking in Leopard
The following articles outline how to set up networking between Macs using Leopard and Windows PCs:
Setting up a Windows computer to share files with Mac users
Setting up a Mac computer to share files with Windows users
    Sharing with Windows computers
If you can’t connect to your Mac from a Windows computer
Sharing your computer with others on your network
More information is also available by selecting Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and searching for the relevant terms such as "windows", "networking", "sharing", etc.
    Also read:
Simple guide to Leopard/Windows Home Networking
Written by Intercepter121 and originally posted on the Apple Discussions here.
If your network complies to the minimum requirements described below you should be able to share resources without any need to enter commands in the terminal to modify configuration files in your mac.
    Requirements
    1. A decent router
    2. Mac Os x 10.5.1 installed on your macs
    3. Windows XP or Vista
    4. Number of network devices <10
    5. Some network printers or drives (NAS)
    6. A decent ISP offering a good DNS service
    <u>General Settings
If your router offers DHCP and any of the device has power saving features there is a risk that the IP addresses are renewed. This can be problematic as the devices keep changing IP addresses. As this is your network is strongly recommended to reserve IP addresses to the MAC (Machine Address Code) of the various devices so that they can power on and off and still keep the same IP.This simple suggestion will greatly improve the browsing of the local network.
Accessing Windows Resources from Leopard with no authentication
    Windows
    1. Check the settings of the PC and ensure the IP addresses on the local LAN are trusted
    2. Activate sharing on the desired devices ensuring the shares are read and write. If you use Vista ensure password protected sharing is disabled.
    3. Try to access the windows share from another windows computer if available to confirm no authentication is required
    MAC
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go back into system preferences network. On the tab location click edit locations. Duplicate Automatic and call the new location Home. Now select the Home location and go into Advanced-WINS. In the workgroup field enter the same value that is on the other windows computers for example HOME. Now press enter then go back to the main screen. Select Edit locations and delete the location automatic. Now edit your location Home and rename it Automatic. This workaround is a leopard bug described here.
    3. Give 5 minutes to allow all the other machines to broadcast their IP address and the other computers should appear on the left side of your finder window. You can now select the shares you want to connect. As no authentication is active if you are prompted with a user name just press OK.
The procedure to access a NAS is the same as above, just ensure permissions are set to files are read/write for anyone to avoid confusion.
NOTE: There is no need to activate SMB sharing if you don't want to allow the PC to read folders on your MAC
    Troubleshooting
After you have followed all the steps you don't see any windows PC.
Identify the IP address of the machine you want to connect. In finder select Option+K and enter SMB://IPADDRESS. If you can connect you have a name resolution problem. Go into your router configuration and ensure that the option DNS assigned by ISP is selected and you don't have services like Open DNS in use and fixed IP addresses in that field. Apply the changes and reboot the router. You should start seeing windows PC in finder shortly after.
Your ISP DNS service is poor and you must use Open DNS or similar
If you are forced to use services like open dns you have the risk that the router propagates the DNS servers to your machines. As the implementation of SAMBA in Leopard effectively blocks the MAC to be a master browser for performance reasons you end in a situation in which tiger machines connect and leopard ones don't see a single share. Let's fix it.
    1. Go into System Preferences->Network then advanced DNS if you see here the IP addresses of the open dns servers this is the case. Unfortunately you will be forced to change the hosts file.
2.Ensure you have reserved IP addresses to all your machines so that they always get the same IP.
    3. Now login into your mac as administrator and go into utilities=>terminal.
    4. Issue the following command sudo pico /etc/hosts
    5. Now scroll down and enter all the IP addresses and computer names of any device you want to browse
    6. Reboot your MAC
The windows devices will now appear in finder and you will be able to connect with Option+K.
You cannot access shares even entering the IP address
You have not reserved IP addresses to each machine. Go into your router LAN set up and make sure that is the case.
    Accessing Leopard resources from Windows
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go into System preferences->accounts and click on Guest flag the option Enable guest account to access shared folders
    3. Now into System preferences->sharing select file sharing and then options here flag SMB and select the user that has to be logged into the computer when the share has to be accessed. Ensure that the folder you want to share has read/write or whatever permissions you like it to have set for Everyone
You should now be able to see your MAC in the windows network resources and access the shared folder with a double click without any password request.
    Troubleshooting
You don't see any MACs from Windows
Check the firewall settings at the start of this post. Then go back to the Network configuration hit advanced and then TCPIP check is using DHCP and not a fixed address. Then check the sharing is set as above with SMB clicked. If SMB is not set you won't even see your mac from windows.
You see the MAC and the shared folders but you can't read or write on it
Ensure you have set the guest account to access shared folders. Then check on the sharing preferences that there is at least one folder with read permission for everyone. The classic case here is Dropbox that leopard sets as read and write for the user of the MAC but no access for other users. You try to click on drop box and receive an error but when you actually try to write a file you can do it. Check the permissions on the subfolders of the share as those permissions will prevail on the home shared folders
    FAQ
You may want to do more complicated things, but first ensure you can actually share files without security in place so you can identify the root cause of your possible problems
I want to password protect my windows shares: once you have done the relative set up in windows vista and ensured you can connect from another windows machine you will need to use user name and password of the Vista user to connect.
I want to password protect my MAC shared folders: Go into user account and disable guest access to shared folders is no shared folder has to be accessed without password otherwise leave it checked. Create a new user for sharing (better than giving away your password) so that this user only accesses the folders you want to share. In System preferences network select file sharing SMB and flag only the new user you have defined. Then go back to the folder section and set the permissions you like on the folder you want to share for this newly defined user.
    Good Luck

  • How to find files created by Apps in iTunes 11.1.4.62?

Unable to find a way to view and manipulate files created by Apps. with 11.1.4.62.
Also missing is the display of the screens in devices containing app icons which can be repositioned.
Have these features been purposely removed from 11.1.4.62 ?  Do I need to reinstall the previous version to get them back?

I think you're asking how to update your apps on iTunes on your computer.
The screen from which you update looks like this:
To get there, go to "Apps" as shown in the upper left, then click "Updates" in the top center.  All available updates will be displayed.  If there are none displayed, click "Check for Updates" in the lower right.  If some are in fact available, that button will change and say "Update all".

  • How to read file from server if I have a logical file path?

    Hi guys,
I'm having a pretty "on the run" question,
My program is currently reading a file from server using "open dataset" with file path like this (just example)
    /usr/interface/abc/bcd/testfile.dat
Now I got a requirement to make it more consistent to read files, instead of reading that physical file name, I should read the files from a specific folder using logical path.
So I go to T code "FILE" and created a logical path called ZABC_FILE_PATH, unix compatible, with physical path is (for example),
    /usr/interface/<sysid>/<client>/<filename>
My question is, can I still use open dataset statement to read this? if yes, how do I do that? If no, there should be alternative way, please let me know what you think. Thanks,

Thanks all, I figured it out.
ONe thing is that typo double quote
The other thing is the importing part, I need the full file path.

  • Can't open DNG files created with Mac CS5 downloader in Mac CS4 Photoshop

I recently installed CS5 on my mac but I kept CS4 installed as well.  I notice that I cannot open DNG files created with CS5 in Photoshop CS4.  Bridge CS4 shows the files only as icons - no image thumbnails.  I am able to open these same files on a Windows version of CS4.  Is there some plugin for my mac CS4 that will enable me to access the DNG files created with CS5?  Is there a way to use my CS5 downloader when converting my raw files from my camera to DNG files that will make them compatiple with PS and Bridge CS4?

Well, yes...but you'll need to modify your DNG Converter prefs to allow for that. You''ll need a recent (ideally current DNG Converter 6.4.1 or above) and click on the DNG Converter preferences and select the correct DNG Converter options. Check DNG Converter 6.4.1 (the current version) and click on "Change Preferences" to be sure select Camera Raw 5.4 and later then make sure CS4 is updated to ACR 5.7 (which is the last version of ACR for CS4) However, the changes made to ACR 6.x really should be adopted since IQ for ACR 6.4.x is a lot better...

  • Installed iTunes 11.4.0 and cannot find how to view files created by apps or screen displays for moving icons.  Where did it go?

I recently installed iTunes 11.4.0 and cannot find how to view the files created by some apps on my iPhone (and iPad).  There appears to be no way to view them as there was in the previous version.  Also can't view screens and icon positons to manipulate them in iTunes.  Any one no how to find them, or if they have been purposely removed from 11.4.0?

First, take a deep breath ... enjoy life.
Upgrade to the latest version 1.4.1. It's a free upgrade. It however will not alleviate your frustrations.
You can move a directory in Lr by clicking and dragging to a new location within the Folders panel. To create a new folder on a new drive ensure that no folders are selected (hint: click All Photographs in the Catalog panel) then click the + icon in the Folders panel. You will be presented with a dialog to choose or create a new folder.
To move selected photos to a new directory first select the images then right click the destination folder. You will be presented with several options including moving to the destination folder or creating a new folder under the destination folder.
You can also move images outside of Lr. Review these links:

Yes, you pretty much just drag and drop or copy and paste depending on which way you like better. It is pretty much like connecting an external hard drive. Just find the files you want and copy them over to your other computer.
This is one of my favorite features from Macs. It's very simple to do and because it's Firewire even large files transfer over very quickly.
