A FW cable would be far faster & Easier, but with Ethernet you need a compatible version of Migration Assistant running on both Macs.

  • How to share personal files from the  iMac to MacBook Pro

How do I share files from the iMac so I don't have to keep on sending it to the MacBook Pro. Under the iMac's system preferences, I clicked on sharing and enabled personal file sharing. When I connect to the iMac's server using the MacBook Pro, I try to log in but it says my log in info is unknown. So I try loging in as a guest but when I click on the drop box, it says that I don't have the privilegde to view it. Is there another easier way of file sharing between the computers I have at home?

When you log into the server computer you need to use the username and password of an account that exists on the server computer.

  • How do I remove files from my HD if MacBook Pro is not starting up?

My MacBook Pro has a solid state aftermarket hard drive that is completely full and is now causing start up problems. When I turn my laptop on the login screen comes up and I can enter my password and login as usual. However after login just a grey screen appears and it stays that way forever until I shut the computer down by holding power button. if I physically remove my hard drive is there any way I can hook it up to a different computer and remove files to free up enough space to allow my Mac to successfully start up and login? Ive already tried safe boot and NVRAM/PRAM reboots but neither of those worked. Let me know if my idea is possible/how or any other methods that would help me out.
    Thanks,
    Isaac

If you have another Mac, use Target Disk Mode. Connect your Mac to the other Mac using a Thunderbolt or FireWire cable, and hold down the T key while booting up on the problematic Mac. If you go into Finder on the other Mac, the first one's hard drive should show up as a disk.

  • How to transfer music files on iPad to new Macbook Pro

I just got my new MacBook Pro and I am learning some of the features it has to offer but I have not figured out how to transfer music files from my iPad3 to the new laptop. Is there a way to do that or am I out of luck?

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • How can I get files from my "no entry" MacBook Pro?

I've got a MacBook Pro A1286 that I got a couple of years ago. It crashed with the "no entry" sign recently.
It's insured so it'll be getting fixed in the next week or so, but they're not sure if they'll be able to recover the data, so I'd like to try myself first.
It suddenly went kaput, when I go to Disk Utility in the recovery mode, it says everything is OK, but I went through in terminal and it keeps endlessly trying to access the drive and can't. It can see that the drive's there, but can't access it at all.
I don't have another Mac, nor an external drive, so I'm not sure how I could go about recovering my files. I was going to try burning an ISO of Disk Drill to a DVD and booting from that, but I'm not sure that's possible.

See mount section. You can run this from Terminal in Recovery.

  • How do i transfer files from pc to new macbook pro running yosemite

I want to transfer documents, pictures and iTunes library from Dell pc running Windows Vista to new MacBook pro running Yosemite.

Use the Migration Assistant, or move the files manually through file sharing or an external drive. If you've already set the MacBook Pro up and use the Migration Assistant, the files will be put into a different user account.

  • How do I sync files on Mac mini and MacBook pro

I want to sync files between my Mac Mini and my MacBook Pro. Is there a way to do this? Primarily, I want to access photos in my LightRoom Catalog from both platforms. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Note that there's a difference between sharing and syncing.
Sharing will allow you to access the files on your Mini from your MBP, but the files won't be on your MBP when you take it somewhere else.
Syncing is making both Macs have identical copies of files, so that a change on one Mac makes a change on the other Mac.
If you've got a large LightRoom catalogue and limited space on your MBP, then you want sharing. The link above should get you started with that.
For syncing, I recommend BitTorrent Sync, which is free. It's basically "DropBox without the cloud". You select a folder to sync, and then whenever your two Macs are on the same network, any file in that folder that changes is synced to the other Mac.
I use it to keep my entire Documents folder synced between my Mini and MBP.
    http://www.bittorrent.com/sync
You may need to be careful about modifying the same document on both computers at the same time, though I believe BS does handle this in some way. Also, if you're syncing an app's data library, then some database files (e.g. with computer-specific data like file path names) may not sync well.
Of course, you could use DropBox, though you'll need to subscribe if you want more than a couple of GB.

  • How to copy a file from a folder on macbook pro

ive been trying to copy a file (a video file) from my finder to my external hard drive, drag it and stuff, but i keep getting this forbidden sign.
i'd love to get some help.
    thanks.

    Hi,
Normally this happens if the hard drive is either formatted in an incompatible format (like NTFS which is read only) or if you do not have permissions to write to the hard drive.
You can check the format in disk utility by selecting the external hard drive partition in the left and then down the bottom it will show the format. It should either be Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or MS-DOS FAT. If it is not you will need to erase the drive to format it.
You can check the drive permissions by right clicking (control clicking) the icon for the external hard drive, and selecting "Get Info". down the bottom in sharing and permissions, check the box that says "Ignore Ownership"
    Hope this helps.

  • Does anyone know how to select multiple files in photoshop cs6 on macbook pro lion

I'm new to Mac operating system. Can anyone tell me how to select multiple images in cs6 photoshop? Without having to hold down a shift or cmd key and clicking on each one.

I assume you are using the Shape tool to draw your hexagons. After you drag out the shape, use the Transform controls to tweak the size, so that the width is evenly divisible by 4, and the height is an even number. If you wand a gap between shapes, include that in your adjustments. Make a note of the new width and height.
Once the scaling is committed and the shape is selected, Control+Alt+T to Free Transform Copy, and in the Option Bar, set the X and Y to Relative. Set X to zero, and Y to the height you set earlier, and commit the Transform. Then Repeatedly press Shift+Control+Alt+T to make more transformed copies.
With a vertical column of shapes, Alt-Click on the Shape Path in the Paths panel to select the whole path. Control+Alt+T again. This time, again using relative, set X to three-quarters of the width you noted earlier, and Y to one-half the height, and commit
Finally, again Alt-click on the Shape Path in the Paths panel, and Transform Copy relative with X = one and a half times the width you noted, and Y to zero. After committing this, Shift+Control+Alt+T as above to extend more columns.
And JJ, those are Octagons .

  • How to read and write on ntfs partitions??

Hello everyone, thanks for viewing my post.  I want to know how to read and write on ntfs partitions under sata hd on my arch64 system.  I'm using kde as my de and dolphin does sees it but can't access it anyway.  I didn't had problem so far on mounting usb drives it just automounts maybe because it is a fat partition not a ntfs?  Please I need your help...Thanks in advance:)

You will most likely need to rework your fstab.  The one from my desktop is shown below. If you want regular users to be able to access the partition, then you will need to change the gid option as I have done. Although you could create a group just for people you want to have access.
You will need to know the device that your windows partition is held on of course. In my case it is my first hard disk, first partition, hence /dev/sda1.
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/mapper/nvidia_fbgfhehd1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
    /dev/mapper/nvidia_fbgfhehd2 / reiserfs defaults 0 1
    /dev/mapper/nvidia_fbgfhehd3 /var reiserfs defaults 0 1
    /dev/mapper/nvidia_fbgfhehd5 /opt reiserfs defaults 0 1
    /dev/mapper/nvidia_fbgfhehd6 swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/mapper/nvidia_fbgfhehd7 /home reiserfs defaults 0 1
    /dev/sdd1 /mnt/andromeda vfat defaults 0 0
    /dev/sda1 /mnt/windows ntfs-3g defaults,user,gid=users 0 0
My XP partition is set to mount automatically, as I regularly interchange documents between the OS's.
    Hope that helps.
