How to really (!) compress embedded pictures?

I have a big, big pdf doc with mostly embedded pictures.
Now I want to compress the whole pdf doc up to 10-20% of the original size.
There are some so-called "pdf compressor" tools out there.
I tried a couple of them but the pdf doc is NOT getting much smaller (10.1 MB->9.9 MB)
So I am still searching for real (!) pdf compressor which is able to compress the embedded pictures.
If these pictures were stored as (uncompressable) *.png images then the compressor should be able
to convert them to *.jpg and compress them even more.
Does someone know such a tool?
Peter

I think your question would be better answered in the Acrobat forum, for discussion about its "PDF Optimizer" feature rather than here which is about the technical details of the PDF file format.
But since you raised it here, I will point out that PDF supports MANY DIFFERENT compression formats for images - both lossless (eg. Flate, LZW, JPEG2000, JBIG2, CCITT, etc.) as well as lossy (eg. JPEG/DCT, JPEG2000, JBIG2).  In addition, PDF supports technologies such as segmentation, layering and like which are commonly used in image compression strategies.

• Embedded pictures in g-mail do not get thru when forwarded. Google claims it's a browser problem. how do I fix this?

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, Firefox 3.6.16
This problem started up about 4 months ago. I thought it was a Google problem, but Google claims it's a browser problem. The same problem happens with Internet Explorer. I checked the Google website and many people are having this same problem. And Google is totally unresponsive.
Attached pictures go thru fine, but if I get an e-mail from someone with embedded pictures in the message, when I forward that message, the receiver does not get the pictures...only a red X in a blank box.
How can this be fixed?

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

• HOW DO I COMPRESS 2008 POWERPOINT FILES SO I CAN EMAIL THEM?

Hi. I am new to Power Point. I spent all day making a presentation, but I was using scanned images and digital images, which I know now are very large. No one warned me to compress the files before I inserted them, so I didn't. Now, the file is too large to send via email. I have been looking for information online about how to compress the files and cant find any answers.
The 2007 version seemed to have a "compress pictures" button on the tools menu. On the 2008 version, there is no tools menu and no compress pictures button. (There is one actually in the save as menu but it doesn't compress the file at all!)
I am at a complete loss and very frustrated. I am terrible with computers. Can anyone please give me advice on what to do to solve this problem? I need it for an interview Thur!
Thank you.

I had the same problem, followed the link to the horrible M****soft forum, read the following:
<<Embedded pictures are the common cause for large PowerPoint files. Office for Mac 2008’s PowerPoint has a built-in tool that can compress your embedded images and shrink your PowerPoint file:
1. With PowerPoint open, click PowerPoint on the menu bar at the top of the screen and choose Preferences...
2. Choose the Save tab
3. At the bottom of the window, check the box for "Compress graphics files". This will automatically compress all graphics in your PPT files.>>
..followed the instructions and nothing happened. Tried to leave a scathing reply about nothing happening, was asked to sign up to MSN, stopped that process when I saw that I was giving the right to send me promotional emails... yuk!
soo, did you find a solution to your compressing question?
thanks
Hugh

• How do you remove a picture from a theme?

Hi all gurus.
This must be the most silly question so far in the forum but I have to ask again: How do you remove a picture from a theme?
I uploaded a background picture for the Masthead Function Area but now I want to remove it. Since the correspodning field is blank when you go into the editor you can't erase the picture's URL
What you can do is to browse to, and choose, a new picture and then erase the URL in the field. The mentioned area is then actually emptied and the color set in the field "Background Color of Masthead Function" is shown.
But, and here is the problem, when you save the theme the picture is back again! Isn't there the possibility to show the background color, for which there is a field, instead of a picture? Do I really have to upload a picture just containing the color I want to have??? If so, that must be one of the most stupid functionaliteis I have seen in the portal so far, indeed...
I'm most grateful for every suggestion of how to solve this in a decent way and not the idiotic "replace picture with another picture" way.
Best regards
Benny

Hi Raghu.
Unfortunately it didn't help. Their solution with writing "none" in the field is only applicable for those objects where you have a field determening ways of showing the object. There you have the different behaviours like "repeat", "non-repeat" and "none" and there you can write it directly in the field.
The field of which I am talking doesn't have these options and hence not "none". I still tried it though but it didn't work, the picture was back after saving the theme.
Best regards
Benny

Only Apple Account Security could help at this point. You can try calling Apple Support in Canada - you'll have to find one of the several ways, such as Skype, to call an 800 number from outside of the relevant country - and ask for Account Security and see if they can help. Or you can find a friend who speaks Chinese and ask them to help you talk to Apple Support in China. There are really no other options that I know of.
Note, by the way, that these are user-to-user support forums. You aren't speaking with Apple when you post here.

My podcasts do not show the pictures only the sound when I import them to iTunes from Garage Band.  How do I get the pictures to show up in iTunes?

Well, all I can tell you is that if your file is an m4a with chapter markers, those markers having suitably sized images attached, and you drag it into the Music area of iTunes (so that it appears as a song) in List view, when you play it and then command-click on the small image in the header (next to the progress bar) you should see your embedded images.
If this isn't happening the best place to ask would be in the GarageBand forum: my own experience of GB is rather out of date and in any case I've never used it for podcasting.

• How can I load a picture and use it in ActiveX in run time ??

I am using an ActiveX object which needs a property "picture" as input.
I can set the picture property in its property page in design time, but I don't know how to give it a "picture" in run time.
In VB, I can do:
dim pic As Picture
pic = loadpicture("c:\test.bmp")
control_1.picture = pic
(("control_1" is the ActiveX object, and picture is the property))
How can I do the same with labview?
Is there any example that sets the picture property of an ActiveX in run time?

As
far as I understand from the MSDN site, it seems that the Picture
datatype is a specific VB only datatype. Most probably it is a handle
(uInt32) value as far as other programs including LabVIEW are
concerned, but there is no way that LabVIEW could deal with this
datatype directly.
If you can convert this datatype with some VB fucntions into a HBITMAP
or HDIB then you could call some Win32 API functions to extract the
relevant bitmap data from this common Win32 datatype and get somewhere
from there. OR it maybe that VB itself has other functions to extract
the bitmap data, color palette and other attributes of the Picture
datatype. Don't expect LabVIEW to be able to deal with the Picture
datatype directly though, this is really a proprietary VB thing.

How do you save a picture from email to the iPhoto?

Click and hold on the Save button, and a menu appears, listing each attached file’s name along with a Save As button. Select any individual file, and you’ll save just that attachment to disk. But the really nice feature is the final menu item—Add to iPhoto. That’s right; with one button click-and-hold, you can add all of a message’s attached images to iPhoto.

Hello, I have been experiencing similar problems and followed the suggestion and yes, the raw icon comes up as illustrated but there is nothing there to indicate any further action can be taken.  So I am presuming that means it is installed and no further action required?
Here's my problem:  I have had no problems  getting my pics into my organiser in Elements 12 from either my Nikon D7100 or my Fujifilm X100S - until last week.  Suddenly when they are imported all I see is the timer icons but they don't open to let me view them.  If I click on one it will open and I can then edit it but it will not save an image onto the grid for me to view so it's really frustrating not being able to view all my photos in order to decide what to edit and compare them.
Here's what action I've taken so far - restarted the computer (endlessly), checked the updates and installed them, checked I have the latest raw plug in (I do) and gone into edit/update thumbnail (doesn't do a thing) - and torn out a fair amount of my hair.  So anyone out there experienced this and can give me some advice? Please?

• How can i take Better pictures from my Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9V like DSLR?Kindly Best Settings...

How can i take Better pictures from my Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9V like DSLR?Kindly Best Settings...

Taking better pictures on an HX9v isn't something you can just 'do'. It takes learning and creativity.
Understanding how the camera works, and having a good imagination to use it.
Look at phone cameras for example, amazing photos.
If you're talking about image quality, that is, less noise, crisp sharp photos, etc, compact cameras in general just won't match the DSLR.
If you're talking about photos that look stunning, again, learn how to use the camera, and be imaginative (creative)
I have a couple of articles to understand the basics to a camera (I really need to find the time to add more) on my website:
http://d3studio.com.au/
One thing I'm definitely lacking on there is composition, and that's something you can learn on YouTube - compositions in a photo is very important when you're first starting out.
Put your 9v onto M (manual) mode, and try out the different things - learn how the camera works, think about what you want to shoot, and then do it.
Good luck.

• How can I save a picture in Photoshop Elements that was emailed to me using Photoshop Elements?

How can I save a picture in Photoshop Elements that was emailed to me using Photoshop Elements?

Save the attachment in a folder.
From the Organizer menu choose:
File >> Get Photos & Videos >> From Files & Folders
Navigate to your image and click Open.
If the photo is embedded, make a copy or screen grab and then whilst it’s still held in memory open the Elements Editor.
From the menu click:
File >> New >> Image from clipboard
Then use File >> Save As
Then choose jpeg.

When I receive mail with embedded pictures, sometimes they do not show. I just logged into the webmail for my provider, and everything shows perfectly in the mail. • Behaviour sRGB embedded pictures in  Lightroom versus IE

hello,
I have a calibrated monitor (6500K and a gamma of 2,2). I'm working with Windows Vista. When I view a picture with embedded sRGB profile in InternetExplorer (uses no colormanagement) and Adobe Lightroom (uses colormanagement), there is a very little difference in color between Internet Explorer and Lightroom or Windows photo gallery. IE shows the colors a little bit more saturated. The grays look the same.
I know that when I view a picture with embedded Adobe RGB profile or Prophoto profile, It will look completely different in Lightroom versus Internet Explorer.
sRGB is the default color space for Windows IE. Is it normal, even with a calibrated monitor, that there is still a little difference visible with sRGB embedded pictures, between applications using profiles (like Lightroom) and applications not using profiles (like Internet Explorer)

>s it normal, even with a calibrated monitor, that there is still a little difference visible with sRGB embedded pictures, between applications using profiles (like Lightroom) and applications not using profiles (like Internet Explorer)
Yes. You will only see the correct color in managed apps even on calibrated monitors. This includes Safari and Firefox
with the secret setting, but excludes Internet explorer and very surprisingly Google's Chrome (Boooo Google!!!). The reason for this is that the color primaries (i.e. the actual colors of your monitor's red, green, and blue emitters) are never exactly the same as sRGB's.
There is also a small knee in the shadow portion of sRGB. Most calibration software will calibrate not to this tone curve, but to simple gamma 2.2, so you will always see a small difference in the shadow portion between managed apps and unmanaged apps.
Now as Sean notes, you cannot really predict what your image will look like on other people's monitors. In general it will hover around to the look of sRGB on your calibrated monitor in managed apps, which is why everybody will recommend sRGB. But individually, you can get quite large deviations. Especially because of the current prevalence of laptops, which without fail almost always have terrible screens. They usually give rise to very strong shifts of the blue component (which some people erroneously interpret as a problem with sRGB). Unfortunately there is really nothing you can do about it.

• How do I compress a PNG file in Illustrator?

How do I compress a PNG file in Illustrator?

Don’t use .png format for print. It’s not meant for that and can’t have an embedded profile for colour conversion.
So conversion from RGB to CMYK will be pretty random and probably not match your expectations.
You should either convert the file to CMYK yourself (using a suitable colour management setup for the printing process in question) or else supply an RGB format that supports colour profiles. .Jpg, .psd, .tif, .pdf, .eps are o.k. but not .png.
