  • How to slave a Macbook pro with no OS

Helping a friend who just got a (Macbook pro 2) secondhand without any OS installed (HD wiped clean).
He is replacing his current MB Pro that is running 10.4.11.
I hoped a USB to USB would allow the new computer to be recognized as a HD on the desktop of the old one, but that's not working.
How do I get the old one (MB Pro) to recognize the new OS-less one (Macbook pro 2) so that I can clone the old computer to the new. He cannot find any disks in his house after version 9 (!!), so I cannot install another copy of the OS on the new computer and slave it directly.
Any ideas how to accomplish this? Seems like it ought to be easy, but I'm doing this long distance without the computers in front of me, and I'm at a loss.
    Thanks for your help.

Connect them with a Firewire cable then Boot the old MacBook Pro with 'T' held down to force Target disc mode (will appear as a Volume on the other Desktop) then you should be able to clone over.

  • How to buy a MacBook Pro with a Swedish keyboard?

    Hello,
I work at a University, we have a new researcher here that wants us to purchase a MacBook Pro with a Swedish keyboard. For three weeks we have been unable to get anywhere. We have a University account manager, but she hasn't made any progress. We are willing to pay the retail price of a MacBook Pro in Sweden, we just can't get anyone to take our money.
We can't be the only University in America that has a need for foreign language support.
    Thanks for listening.

If you really must have a Swedish physical keyboard (which is not necessary for typing Swedish unless the person can't type without seeing what is on the keys), the place to look for one is

  • How to reboot a macbook pro that stops at grey screen

My wife's macbook pro, 2010 circa, is not rebooting.  With three attempted power-ups she gets a grey screen with the Apple logo...

In answer to your question, have you tried using
    Disk Utility?
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then, if you can, reboot to your internal drive and repair permissions.

  • How can i connect macbook pro with iphone 4 via bluetooth?

I`ve connected iphone with macbook pro few weeks ago for i-net surfing, but i had to use cable. Now i wanna try icloud, and i`ve faced that trouble. My mbp sees iphone, makes pair, but fails to connect it. If i try it with iphone, a message "mbp cant be connected, it isn`t connectible device"-something like this- appears and mbp disappears from known devices list. How can i solve that?
    MacBookPro8,3 (17")-june 2011
    Boot ROM:          MBP81.0047.B1E
    SMC:          1.70f3
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
    iphone 4 16 gb
    model MC603ZA
    ios 4.3.5 (8L1)
    boot rom 04.10.01

I have somehow the same problem. I just bought the new iPhone 4S and tried to connect it to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6, latest version, model 2011). The Phone did not see the Mac but the Mac the Phone, so I connected the Phone via Mac.
It worked for about 5 seconds, but then I got this error message:
It's German and means that the network is not available.
Of course I tried again to connect, but I now get always this error:
It says that the device is not available...
I deleted the iPhone from the list under Mac and tried again, but it's still the same.
No my Questions to the community:
Why does the iPhone not see the MacBook?
    Why does it allways disconnect?
Is Sync not possible via Bluetooth?
    Thanks for your help!

  • How good is a Macbook Pro with dual video cards for gaming?

I've been a PC guy my whole life (aside from my iPhone which I love). My gf has been pushing me to try out a mac and considering how my PC laptops have a pretty good track record of dying on me or encountering some other problems after a year or two, I can't help but consider making the investment. The only thing is, I'm a big gamer and usually get the latest games. I'm not super tech savvy though I do my research and get a sense of what kind of specs are better and worse.
In terms of gaming, I always assumed that more ram = better. In that sense, I'm a little put off that even the most expensive MacBook Pro only comes with 4 gigs of ram (which is what my year and a half old laptop has now) especially when it seems most newer laptops have 8 gigs minimum for a fraction of the price (and 16 gigs if you're willing to spend as much as you would on the most expensive macbook pro). Does RAM somehow work differently on a Mac or is it truly that little?
Also, how does the whole dual video card thing work, does that mean I'd be having the power of those two cards put together?
Personally, I've been leaning towards the Asus G53SX-NH71 because I can buy it for less than the cost of the cheapest macbook pro and as far as gaming purposes go it seems to have more power than even the most expensive Macbook which costs over double the price.
Am I missing something here? Do the dual video cards really bring that much to the table or for gaming purposes am I better off with a PC?
    Thanks.

I've been watching this forum for years, and I'll have to say that gamers are not a big group around here.  A few things.  First, getting 8GB of RAM for the MacBook Pro is cheap.  Most people either don't care, pay Apple to do it, or, like me, DIY.  The max you put in a MBP is 8GB, so no 16GB, unless you were looking at the iMac or MacPro.
Second, there is no dual video card in a MacBook Pro.  There is an integrated video card, an Intel HD3000, which shares RAM with the CPU, or a discrete video card, an AMD, various versions on different MBP's.  The Intel is for low battery usage.  The AMD is more powerful, and it's to be used when you've got power.  The video card has more applications than just gaming, but also in video and photo editing.
No one here is going to talk you into one platform or another.  If you are only going to game in Windows, then it's a waste to get a Mac.  If you're going to game in Windows but want the Mac side to do everything else, the build quality and elegance of the Mac will far exceed most products out there.  You can run Windows in Boot Camp natively, and as I understand, gamers love it, because the Mac is actually a better Windows machine than most Windows machines.  But I don't play games, so I have no proof.
So the choice is yours.  And we could argue all day long about the side by side comparison of a cheap Windows machine vs. the Mac.  You are using the price vs. price comparison that is a false dichotomy, ignoring how one values various features.  For example, the trackpad on a MacBook Pro far exceeds (and I mean light year exceeds) anything on any other laptop out there.
I spent 10 minutes answering your question.  I'm not debating you on x vs. y.  The choice is totally on what you're going to do.  Most of us are trying to contribute to the world, so gaming is low on the needs list.

  • How-to sync my Macbook pro with my main iTunes library on another computer?

I bet that question came up already, but I can't easily find any reference to it. Anyways, here I go.
I have a desktop @ home with 1TB of disk space, and I'm using a Macbook Pro as my work laptop. I'd like to be able to sync up my Macbook Pro as if it was an iPod or appletv, so I can bring my music at work and even sync my movies when I travel.
Is that possible using iTunes and if not, does Apple have any plans to implement that feature? I don't want to use a 3rd party software or start playing with rsync to do that. iTunes should be able to support it.
    Thanks!
    David

He wants to take his laptop to work away from his home network so the itunes sharing won't work with that.
There are some streaming server options you can setup such as slimserver http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_features.html
I've used that and it gives you access to your library. Gotta have an internet connection but its easier than copying songs back and forth all the time.

  • How to sync new Macbook Pro with 2011 iMAC on Snow Leapord

    Hello,
This is my first post so hello!
My small business has an office iMAC and a Macbook Air both running 10.6.8. The two aren't synced in any way other than that the Air can access files from the iMAC's hard drive via the network. I have 2 email accounts on the iMAC's mail and just one of them set up on the Air.
I've just bought a new 15" Macbook Pro running Lion.
I'd like to be able to sync some folders (but definitely not all), bookmarks, iTunes and mail accounts between the iMAC and the new Macbook Pro. Ideally I'd like to be able to access the shared/synced folders when I don't have an internet connection
    What's the best method?
Snow Leapord doesn't have iCloud does it? If not, why the **** not?
Is it just easiest to set up the email accounts on the new MBP as normal and then use dropbox for the folders I want to share? Can I access the with no internet connection?
One other question, can i link a gmail account to my Apple mail?
    Thanks for any help.
    Best wishes
    Dave.

No.  It was a feature that was introduced with the release of 10.7.2.  I do not know why it was not introduced on earlier versions.  Probably the same reasons why some features will be introduced in later versions of OS X that will not be found on older versions.
