I am selling my imac to a friend and i want to reboot it so its like new but i dont have the disks to do it. does anyone know if you can do it another way or where i can get a disk from ?
Thanks

To do a "wipe" of the computer - it sounds like you're interested in doing an Erase and Install of the OS.
Just shut down the computer first, then immediately after pressing the power button to turn on the computer, hold down command + R on the keyboard.
This will launch into the Mountain Lion Recovery Partition, we will select our language, then click continue, and on the next screen, you will see 4 options (below) :
Restore from a TM Backup
Reinstall OS X
Get help online
and Disk Utility
first, click on disk utility, and at the top left where the drives/partitions are listed, click on the partition that you use. It's normally called "Macintosh HD" or "Mac HD", and is usually on the 2nd line from the top left, just below and indented underneath your primary internal drive
after selecting the partition with your OS/Data installed to, then click the [erase] tab at the top, make sure format is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)," and the name can stay as Macintosh HD.
Click the [Erase...] button at the bottom right, and it will now delete all the files on that partition (please backup anything you need FIRST, because data is not expected to be recoverable after an erase)
once that is done (normally under 10-15 seconds for normal erase), we will then exit out of disk utility. That will bring us back to the main menu for Recovery HD.
** if you'd like to install the OS for your friend and be nice, you can then click the 2nd option / "Reinstall OS X."
The re-install will prompt you for your apple ID/password, and then it will begin downloading the system files from Apple servers. It will take anywhere from 1-4 hours depending on your internet connection stability and speed.

  • What do I do to resolve an ongoing problem with the MAIL "new messages sound".?  If I reboot the iMAC and keep the mail app open after a number of messages come in the NEW MESSAGE Sound quits. I have to reboot the machine to get it back.

New Messages sound quits after several messages have arrived. I've tried several passes at resolving but nothing I have done seems to work. Sometimes I have to reboot the imac several times to get the New Messages Sounds back. Everything else works. The only thing I haven't done is reinstall the OS and that seems foolhardy.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.

I recently had a data migration from old iMac to new iMac 11.2
How do I use that data file to get old email contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc ?

FireWire cables are dirt cheap and that's how you should be doing the migration. You might have to start over, wiping the new machine's HD, and restoring the software as described in the Everything Mac manual that came with it. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac for more details.

How do i set up a new lion imac from a snow leopard imac using time machine?

Connect the two via Firewire cable - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. Boot the old iMac into Target Disk Mode. Boot the new iMac normally.
If you are starting the new iMac for the first time then do the above before you turn on the new iMac. After you turn on the new iMac you will begin in the Setup Assistant. When you complete the registration screens you will be offered an opportunity to migrate your data from another Mac. Follow the instructions to migrate your old Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences to the new iMac.
If you have already gone through the Setup Assistant and created an initial admin user account, then you do the connection step but will use Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder of the new iMac.

Looks like you plan to use ps as a transport and iMac as an external display? First of all you need Hdmi to Display port converter or cable. The rest should be easy.

In the case of using Target Disk mode between computers, a similar restriction is also present. The adapter will work in Target Disk Mode; however, it will only do so if first plugged into the system before invoking target disk mode so it can be initialized by the firmware.

  • I just purchased a one year old iMac.  How do I create a brand new admin account?

I just purchased a one year old iMac.  How do I create a brand new admin account?

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received those media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    3. Other issues
If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

    Thanks

SADLY  not as i downloaded an upgrad to my original PAGES/
i have in the meantim had to open www.icloud. then from there import the file that i am working on and then check on ipad if it uploaded/ yes it did.
but what a waste of time as it doesn not save any changes done automatically back in the cloud....
i am now downloading the new LION and hope that it will fix the problem
i cant find any other way. I was lead to believe that you wrote, it saved automatically, on to the cloud, you then opened anohter device in anotother country even, and the new file was there, waiting, in its latest version.......

hi guys, i just re-formatted my computer and once i rebooted my iMac my lightroom, inddesign, and PS are gone. I am currently a Creative Cloud member... how do i re-download my needed software ?

    Hi Josh,
If you have your Adobe ID and password ready for your Creative Cloud membership, visit the following page.
Creative Cloud Help | Install, update, or uninstall apps
I generally suggest people FIRST install the Creative Cloud Desktop Application. This is mainly because you then have the option to check and set the installer language prior to installing the applications you want to use again on your system.
Once you have installed the Creative Cloud Desktop app:
Click on the gear icon in the top right.
    Choose preferences.
Click Apps, and set the Installer language. If you happen to live in Australia, you might find that the default installer language is set to English (North American), to English (International English) this would ensure that an application such as InDesign installs with default metric-units of measurements, UK dictionary etc. (instead of inches, US english).
Once that is set, you can click 'Install' next to any applications you'd like to install.
    Good luck.
    Cari
