How to reboot in safe mode?

IOS 10.8.3 will not load after reboot

iOS refers to what is used in the iDevices, not Macs.
MacBook and Mac OS X 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion)
Backup? Try using 10.8.3 Recovery Mode
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
and only then after repairing the disk drive, making a backup  image, and repairing permissions would I bother with a Safe Boot – which is just SHIFT key down on a startup.

After reinstalling MAC OS 10.6.8, I config the permissions to read/write/no access, my MacMini [mid 2010] refuses to reboot. I tried to reboot in safe mode with Command+S and fsck, but after the steps to be taken, it says fscs not done, root device is read only. I also tried to bypass the Mac firmware password by taking one Ram card out and reboot the macmini while holding COMMAND+OPTION+P+R. But no luck. The macmini is not able to see the mac OSX installation CD.

How and where did you change which permissions? And what was the goal?
Do you have a complete backup of your system? and more importantly data files?
What happened that prompted the need to reinstall the 10.6.8 update?
The immediate road forward would be to boot from the optical drive and revert the changes you made.
What happens when you boot with the install cd and hold down C or hold down the option key?

  • How can I use Safe Mode to troubleshoot in Windows 8 or Windows 7?

QuestionHow can I use Safe Mode to troubleshoot in Windows 8 or Windows 7?
AnswerWindows has a special mode known as Safe Mode. It is not fully functional, but it allows you to make changes to the laptop to hopefully fix normal mode. We're going to attempt to boot into Safe Mode to use it fix the laptop.
For more information on how to boot into Safe Mode please see the following articles:
How To: Safe Mode and other Advanced Startup Options in Windows 8
Creating a System Repair Disc for Windows 8 (useful for entering Safe Mode)
How To: Start your Windows 7 computer in Safe Mode
Use Safe Mode to undo recent changes
When a computer won't start Windows, it's usually due to a recent change. If you installed a new piece of software before your laptop began to have trouble booting, you may want to uninstall it. Similarly, if you recently made a change to any system settings, you may want to change it back. If you have antivirus software, you may want to perform a scan. If you're not sure what to do here, feel free to skip to the next step!
Use Safe Mode to perform a system restore
Windows includes a utility called System Restore that can help with many problems. While this won't alter or remove any of your personal files, it will roll back your system settings and files to an earlier date. We'll use this to attempt to fix Windows.
To learn how to use System Restore, please check the following articles:
How To: Understanding System Restore, Refresh, Reset, and, Recovery options in Windows 8 + Video
How To: Perform a system restore in Windows 7
Use Safe Mode to initiate a clean boot
As Windows loads, it loads many additional components such as services and startup items. Some of these are not vital. For example, some tools start immediately with Windows, such as antivirus software. From Safe Mode, we can instruct Windows not to load many of these. This will help you determine if one is causing Windows not to load properly. Note that this step is more advanced than the previous steps. If it seems difficult for you, you may consider asking for help from someone who is more comfortable with computers.
Please view the following article for more information:
How can I perform a clean startup without my startup items to troubleshoot a problem?
If Windows loads normally, you'll know one of those startup items or services was causing the problem. If this is the case, you may want to return to the System Configuration Utility and re-enable some items and services to determine which specific one caused the problem.
    Backing up your data
If you're able to enter Safe Mode, backing up your data should be easy. Connect a USB flash drive or external drive to your computer while in Safe Mode and then copy your important  files to the flash drive or external drive.
You may also want to consider taking your computer to a professional.

Would love to know if this is possible. Found forums dating back years asking exactly the same thing, no solutions. And I do not want to change my headset (Sennheiser MM-50), or use the onboard mic (which sounds like you are using your Mac in a wind tunnel once the fans kick in).

  • My 6th Generation Nano Shuts down my Thinkpad, I've tried uninstalling iTunes, turning off auto sync'ing and restoring my ipod, but every time I plug in my iPod, my whole pc goes blue and then reboots in safe mode. Please Help. Thanks.

My 6th Generation Nano Shuts down my Thinkpad, I've tried uninstalling iTunes, turning off auto sync'ing and restoring my ipod, but every time I plug in my iPod, my whole pc goes blue and then reboots in safe mode. Please Help. Thanks.

    Hello kidmango,
I am going to have to agree with planb77. Look into other drivers in your computer causing the issue, not just the nano's drivers.
It is possible that security software is the culprit. Use this:
    iTunes: Troubleshooting security software issues
You may have to restore your computer to a previous point. From before the issue started. Contact computer manufacture or Windows for steps, or do a search with a search engine.
I would test the ipod on a known good computer to see if its the ipod is the issue. My gut says no. You can set a reservation at an Apple Retail Store. Apple.com/retail .You can also test a known good ipod on your computer.
    Hope this helps.

  • Reboot after safe mode

I rebooted in safe mode (OS-X Yosemite) to troubleshoot a problem (the com.apple.mdworker.bundles issues) and after rebooting in normal mode the App Memory is double than before booting in safe mode. Before App Memory was about 1.5 GB's with the basic stuff open, but after going through safe mode, the App Memory is now around 3 GB's, but there doesn't seem to be anything unusual in the Acitivity Monitor showing the new app memory. It's not a problem since the Mac Pro has 32 GB's but still it's a "Huh?" moment. Any ideas what happened or where to look for clues?

Sorry, misunderstood. Reboot into Safe Mode and see what it is, then back. Superficially, this means nothing. But you need to do it under the exact same conditions. For example, run no applications or utilities after the reboots (except Activity Monitor.) Many third-party items you may have installed will not normally run in safe mode, and that can account for a drop in total memory usage. Look at the memory info reported in Activity Monitor in order to compare. If there is anything unusual, it should become obviou

  • Can't reboot in safe mode, how to reinstall OS X?

Background: My computer is stuck on the grey apple/spinning wheel screen, and remains so even after I attempt to safe boot.
Question 1A: Would reinstalling leopard be the easiest fix for this? I'd be fine with starting from a clean slate-- I've got my computer backed up on time machine.
Question 1B: If reinstalling is alright (this may seem rather silly), how do I go about doing that? Do I simply pop the leopard disk in? Just want to make sure-- I'm a rather skittish computer user.
    Much thanks!

    HI,
Good time to check the startup disk for errors because there might be and underlying problem since you reinstall the Mac OS.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
--- You already have the install disk in the optical drive so shut down the Mac, then restart while holding down the C key while pressing the power button. Keep holding down the C key until you see the Apple logo. Give it a minute or two and you will see a Menu Bar at the top of the screen.
From the Menu Bar, click Utilities/Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% free disk space. Not enough disk space can cause directory corruption.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode

  • My iMac won't reboot in safe mode.  Tried shift shift r and all the other options just apple and sinning wheel

I cant boot my imac in safe mode.  The apple appears and the spinning wheel on low light screen and stays like that.  Waited over an hour. Have used shift and shift r keys and done all the other ways I can find all with same result. This mac has been a problem ever since I installed mavericks.  I have had to reload mavericks on several occasions but this time cant access disc etc.  Any ideas?

You should still have the original OS disc that came with your iMac.
If so, pop that into your disc drive and hold down the C key as you reboot. It should be able to run the OS installer from that disc.
Go into the options/window menu and choose Disk Utility. Verify the hard drive and repair it.
    See if that will help.

  • Yosemite downloaded and installed than Black screen.  all we have is a black screen. Traveling in Indonesia so no Apple store nearby. The screen does not respond to reboot in safe mode. Can anyone help to get the Mac Book Pro up and running again?

We are in indonesia travelling and after downloading and installing Yosemite, on our next restart the screen went black and responds to nothing. Tried to reboot (shift key) in safe mode after first crashing the system but nothing responds except for the opening chime. Toal disaster so any help will be greatly appreciated. Judging by the comments I have read, Yosemite seems to have many issues for us to look forward to, if and when we can bring back the Mac Book Pro to life.

See if you can boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down).  There you can reinstall the system.

  • How do I enter Safe Mode on my Satellite U300?

Does anyone know how to enter safe mode on my u300. tried the usual F8 without success
    Any Ideas?
Have got "The User Profile Service failed the logon." and was going to try system restore to resolve it.
    Any help would be appreciatted.

    Hi
You can enter the advanced boot menu only using the F8 button.
Did you try to press it several times in row?
You should press it immediately after the notebook has been powered up!
Sorry but other way is not known to me
You could try to boot using an Windows Vista disk.. this could help to repair the OS.
In worst case you have to reinstall the OS... :(

  • My Mac Pro 2.8 crashed and will not reboot in Safe Mode - HELP!

    Hello
I have a Mac Pro 2.8 and it froze up on me; I held in the power button to shut it down. Upon restart, all I get is a flashing foldoer file icon with a question mark.
What gives? It will not start in Safe Mode, via the Shift button OR DOS command (sudo nvram boot-args="-x")
    1. How do I get it back up? I have a back up on my external hard drive, but it doesn't recognize it?
    2. Are all my current files gone?
    Thanks for your help

A flashing question mark on boot can mean several things. One, your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from or the startup disk is failing or failed.
Since you don't have the install discs now, it may take some time to order and receive them from Apple. Probably time to take the Mac to an Apple Store or Apple certified repair shop. They can tell you for certain whether or not the disk has failed.
Since holding down the Option key that prompts the Startup Manager window didn't work, not does your external drive recognized your Mac, I'm afraid without a backup to restore those files from, you may be out of luck.
can I get a new one from mac, and will it erase all my files?
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

  • How can I disable Safe Mode permanently?

I'm one of many people who use a Firefox addon called 'Leechblock' to help combat the tendency to waste time online by visiting time-wasting sites, or in my case - visiting porn sites. Leechblock helped, because it allowed me to ban the sites and search terms I would habitually go for. The only problem is that I'm now aware I can circumvent the whole ban thing by hitting 'Shift' when I click FIrefox and opening up the Safe Mode, this allows me to freely search for porn and\or disable the addon.
I know that several other people use Leechblock for the same purpose, and we've all come up against this - if we could disable Safe mode on our own version of Firefox, it'd take considerably more effort to get back in and fall back to those bad habits.
Others have posted instructions for disabling Safe Mode, but they've only worked with much older versions of Firefox. Is anyone with the experience able to dedicate a little bit of time to figuring out and explaining for the non-technical user how to do this on the latest version of Firefox?
Your help would be much appreciated, not only by me but by others with the same issue. Thanks!

  • Rebooting in Safe Mode, Computer Cuts Off

Hi, I've tried twice to Reboot and go to Safe Mode(Once) and Safe mode with Networking(Once). Both times the computer shuts off, The first time I did get as far as putting my screen name in and Almost getting to Control Panel and then Restore
Point and the second time didn't get as far as putting it in before it shut off. I'm on it now and it's fine, just when I do the rebooting, press F8, safe mode, put in password. A Little Background as to why I need to do so. I can't log onto my Administrative
Account Profile, It keeps saying "The User Profile Service, service failed to logon, User profile cannot be loaded. So I researched many links and websites. I concluded between all of them to Reboot, One said Safe Mode, One said Safe Mode with Networking.
I tried both, the one with networking was the second time that I didn't get so far at all. May be you know a better way to go about getting to a Restore Point with out Rebooting or maybe you can help me to figure out why it keeps shutting off, both or either
one would be very helpful. Thanks So Much for your Time In Advance!! I hope I wasn't to repetitive, just trying to be as detailed as possible. :) Have a Beautiful Blessed Day Microsoft Team!!! :)

First, this is the wrong forum for general server support.
Second, if you cannot connect to the User profile service you probably have a network issue not allowing to talk to a domain controller. Is the machine on the network?
