Hold down the "home" button on the front (big round button on the lower front) and the "lock" button (top upper right on the edge) at the same time.
Hold them down at the same time for about 30 seconds.
It worked on my iPhone 4s.

Force the phone into recovery mode, as described here, & restore it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
Or, login to iCloud.com, locate the phone, then erase it.
Either method will remove the passcode.

All of  your apps should be in iTunes on the computer, simply sync them back.
If they are not, go into the purchase history and download them again.

  • How to Transfer the iPhone from one computer to another Win XP

    All
I got my wife a new macbook pro, running Windows XP prof. She has an iphone 3G with 16 GB memory running 3.0.1. So..she wanted to transfer the sync function from her PC to her macbook. Of course, Apple was of NO help at all (but did want to charge us $69.95 since her iphone is out of warranty, and this was an iphone not a mac problem, hmmm..). Took me lots of digging, but here is how you transfer you iphone from one computer to another:
    1. Move you itunes library from the old computer to the new one. To do this, you do NOT just copy it. This is as good a link to use as any to see how to do it, but search the internet and you can find instructions:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-12519_7-10242259-49.html
    2. Transfer your applications you have purchased to the new computer. To do this, open itunes in the new computer, hook up your phone and click on File>transfer purchases (from itunes store) to computer. This will move your applications to the new computer.
    3. Export your MS outlook calendar, contacts, notes, etc. to the new computer by saving each of these categories as a PST file (file>export>then choose the category and type of file)...and then copy these PST files to your new computer and import them into MS outlook.
    4. Copy your playlists from itunes on your old computer to your new computer. This link may be helpful or search the internet again if you need to:

    5. Now...the important part...how to transfer all your settings from the iphone to the new computer....this is the part that was hard to find online, but finally got it: NOTE: THE BACKUP THAT ITUNES MAKES BACKS UP THE APPLICATION SETTINGS BUT NOT THE APPS SO THIS IS WHY YOU NEED TO TRANSFER THE APPS TO THE NEW COMPUTER. The settings have all the data you put into your apps, email settings, preferences, etc...so its a huge time save to transfer these to the new computer also.
-Sync your iphone with your old computer to have a backup in case you mess up...in that case you can restore from your old computer and start over
-Plug your iphone into the new ocmputer and start itunes. It will detect your phone (I assume you have already authorized your new computer to use the library and playlists and apps that you moved)
-Right click on the "iphone" on the left bar...you will see a popup menu...click on "BACKUP". Let it backup your iphone to the new computer. It will NOT sync the phone
-When the backup is done....copy the backup file to a temp directory to be safe. The backup is located in "documents and settings">user name>applications>apple computer>mobile sync. If you cannot see it, you need to open windows explorer (not internet explorer) and go to tools>folder options>view and click on "show hidden files and folders" Note YOU CANNOT JUST COPY THE BACKUP FROM THE OLD COMPUTER TO THE NEW COMPUTER AS SUGGESTED ON SOME WEB SITES...THIS DOES NOT WORK, ITUNES WILL NOT IDENTIFY THE BACKUP EVEN IF YOU PUT IT IN THE FOLDER IN THE NEW COMPUTER THAT MIRRORS THE FOLDER LOCATION IN THE OLD COMPUTER.
-OK now you are ready...click restore on the iphone and restore the phone to factory settings. This will happen in a few minutes (10-15 mins).
-The phone will reboot and itunes will recognize the phone again...as a restored phone. It will then ask you if you want to restore it from the backup..say YES. You then need to go through all the itunes tabs and click on everything you want to sync to the phone (playlists, movies, podcasts, ringtones, etc). Once you are done going thru the tabs click "apply" and the sync will start. Go out, to a movie, to bed, whatever because it will take hours to sync.
-Once the sync is done...voila...your iphone has been moved with ALL the settings to the new computer. Check it. Then you can delete the backup you put into the temp folder if it is OK
    -Deauthorize your old computer
This worked for Win XP...should work for Vista. The whole process took many hours so don't rush through it (i'm guessing 12 hours total work).

  • How do I get iPhone USB back to network preferences?

I (like many others) couldn't get the USB tethering to work after (probably) installing new iTunes 10.7.
I managed to delete iPhone USB from network preferences before reading all about this kext stuff etc that are being posted here.
    I have now tried:
    - uninstalling iTunes 10.7
    - installing iTunes 10.6.3
    - installing AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext v2.2.0
    - installing AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext v2.3.0
    - installing AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext v2.3.6
    - re-installing iTunes 10.7
+ rebooting / connecting iPhone via USB
None of these has made iPhone USB come back to network list.
Any ideas how to get it back?
    I'm running OS X 10.6.8.

Has everyone else managed to fix this or am I the only one who deleted iPhone USB from network preferences?

  • Constant reboot of Iphone 4 and NO restoring possible, tried everything

Without being used at the time I discovered a couple of days ago that my new iphone 4 (running on iPhone 4.0.1 (already for a couple of days, 3 weeks old) was in a constant 30 sec reboot and was pretty warm. When connected to my Mac, iTunes didn't recognise it. Not too worried I read up online on the Apple support website how to restore the iPhone.
Unfortunately the classic restoration (Put phone into restore mode, connect to itunes and hit restore) didn't work. This is what happened:
~ iphone recognized in restoration mode
    ~ extraction of software
~ preparing phone (switch to black screen with apple logo and progress bar)
~ waiting for iphone (progress bar doesn't move)
~ "itunes cannot restore iphone due to an unknown error (9)"
Called Apple hotline and tried all recommended measures: download of new iphone 4.0.1 software, no firewall, newest iTunes, different cable, different computer (Mac & PC), tried recboot exit only to get it out of recovery mode.
Same error every time. I am a little desperate and wonder if it is a hardware error. Has anybody experienced a similar issue and fixed it. Or has anybody another idea what I could try. Apple support in Singapore is still impossible for iPhone 4 so I am grateful for any help. I am a little disappointed that such a promoted device like the iphone 4 took 3 weeks to break down without any human interference. I am very grateful for any help I can get.

I work in retail for at&t. We had one come in defective. It kept constantly rebooting, had a bad battery. As soon as I would unplug it, it would shut off completely. Didn't try to restore, but it sounds like the same problem. It happens, I'm surprised they actually had one in stock to replace it for you, bibo24

  • How can I pair iPhone 6  / 8.1 with Audi and Mercedes until 8.1 is fixed?

How can I pair iPhone 6/8.1 with Audi and Mercedes

Generally your put the vehicle into discovery mode, turn Bluetooth on for the phone and the two should discover each other. I don't know what you mean about getting 8.1 fixed, as it is working just fine for me in my vehicle. Try going into the phone and removing the car(s) from the phone list. Turn off Bluetooth. Go into Settings>General>Reset Network Settings. Do a reset on the phone, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple Logo and release. The phone will reboot. Go into the vehicle(s) and remove all reference to the phone from the vehicle list. Turn the car off, then back on. Put the vehicle's system into discovery/pairing mode. Turn Bluetooth on for the iPhone. The two should pair after following any additional instructions from the vehicle's user guide, such as entering a PIN code.

If it is a 3GS you cannot update it to 4.3, you can only update it to iOS 6. Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer, connect the phone, click on its name on the left, then click the "Check for Updates" button on the right.
If you can't connect to your home WiFi try rebooting the router.

  • Can anyone inform me how to password protect iphone on boot/startup

    Hi,
Can anyone inform me how to password protect iphone on boot/startup like a normal phone/smartphone. Im not talking about the passcode lock feature.
    Thanks,
    Joe

I'm not sure what you are looking for, Joe. The passcode lock code is also required when restarting the phone after turning it off, and when rebooting after a reset procedure.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
