How to reboot osx server 10.6.2 in cli?

Hi,
Somehow my login prompt doesn't log me in anymore. (I can type in name & pass, but the Log In button does not respond.)
Now, I want to reboot the server (I have ssh admin access).
How do I proceed?
sudo reboot doesn't help.

Oops. Wrong forum. Sorry all.

How to uninstall osx server 10.6 ?

There's no downgrade path from OS X Server to OS X client.  Other than wiping the disk, and installing OS X client on the box.  Or as others have done in this situation, shut down the server function(s) you're not using, and leave it alone.

  • Another Newbie, how can Mac OSX Server help my School?

Hi all, the school where i work has just taken delivery of 11 brand new macs. 8 iMacs, 2 MBP's and a mini. What i'm interested to know and if anybody is just prepared to bullet point, is how we can really benefit from this software.
Clearly it's going to be tricky administering 11 macs individually, so maybe sacrifice the mini to become the server. Heres some basic questions and if anybody has any other comments they can add from experience i can approach the school with my findings?
    1) Can multiple third party software installations be initiated. i.e. we have Adobe CS3 can a multiple install be initiated over the network or would all machines have to be updated individually.
    2) A big concern is storage, if a server is used can files be stored locally on the machines or would they have to be stored on the server, Xserve isn't on the cards unfortunately. Is it like a windows server where the profile is stored on the server and then just downloaded to the appropriate machine. For the meantime we ideally need to store locally or on firewire drives to keep storage issues to a minimum. It's no problem making students stick to the same mac if we can make this happen.
    3) Could backups be initiated from all machines to some sort of storage facility.
    4) I'm guessing it's easy to lock machines down, it seems very easy to do on standard OSX so i'm guessing it would be even easier on server.
Being a school i would be grateful for any advice or recommendations on how administering this small network would be easiest done. I'm an experienced mac user but no in a network scenario, i am however keen to learn.
    Thanks in Advance

Hi, I'll give a go at answering your questions.
First, how tricky it will be to administer 11 macs individually truly depends on your users. I've setup offices where the employees were intelligent people who weren't interested in hacking around on their machines, they just did their work. All their user accounts had admin privileges (along with an admin account on each machine that only the appropriate people knew the password for) so they could easily change preferences and do updates, etc. I barely had a problem with them. If you have a group who are all into surfing naughty bits and bittorrenting and other things, then you'll need to lock them down. If you are going to lock them down, you can still do it without the aid of a server by having an admin account on each machine, but you will have to touch each machine periodically to install updates and such. If you do go with server, then you can manage a lot more centrally. By the nature of you having 11 machines and the limit of OS X client of only 10 file sharing connections at a time, you're almost forced into OS X Server and the Unlimited version at that.
    1) Yes you can initiate software installations simultaneously, but it will require you to capture and package those installations, and use something along the lines of FileWave, radmind, Apple Remote Desktop, etc. to perform the push. For the number of users you're dealing with, it's probably much easier to host the installer on the network, and screen control each system and run the install (along with entering the serial numbers for each one). Any future updates could be easily performed with a terminal script and access to the updater files.
    2) You can store your files anywhere you want, locally or on the server (or even on a NAS). Obviously it makes sense to host them on the server (or other central location) if they are collaborative files (ie., everyone works on them or needs to see them). Your question about the windows profiles doesn't make sense with the storage part, but you can choose how to run your server/client model. You can have roaming profiles where the users' home directories are stored on the server and they can login from any machine. Or you can have individual machines and the server only authenticates the user for access to mail/file/whatever services.
    3) Yes. Either by using Time Machine if it gets fixed in 10.5.2, Retrospect (which I don't trust and haven't for years), rsync (which is free and built into the OS and is cross platform so you could even back up Windows clients), or some other commercial client like PresSTORE.
    4) Yes, as I stated above you can lock down the client machines and of course server can be locked down to avoid people from messing it up.
I know you mentioned an Xserve isn't an option, but how about a MacPro tower? In your situation, I would setup a MacPro with a single 2.8Ghz Quad core chip, Unlimited MacOS X Server, 2GB RAM, and 2 x 500 GB SATA drives for $3648 (cheaper if you get the drives from elsewhere). If there's the chance you could migrate other school services to the new server (email, websites, shared calendar, jabber server, etc.) you could upgrade the processor and memory (RAM can also be had cheaper from a 3rd party). You setup the two drives in a mirror RAID for fault protection and it would contain your OS and your file shares. Then get 2 external firewire drives, at least 500 GB each. Configure your network backups (and the server itself) to backup to an external drive, leave it attached for a week, and at the end of the week, eject the drive, disconnect it, and plug in the other drive (both should be named the same). Then take the first drive off-site (to another building on campus, etc.). Repeat every week. This gives you a rotating off-site backup. If even that is not an option, the mini could be the server, but you definitely want to max the RAM, and buy one of those nice mirrored RAID enclosures from OWC as your main drive, along with the 2 externals for rotating backup.
I hope that's answered some of your questions, feel free to ask more if need be. May I ask where you are located? If by some amazing chance we're close by, I might be more of a help. Take care and good luck.

  • How to deinstall OSX Server Mountain Lion

    Hello togehter,
ich want to deinstall my OSX Server Mountain Lion from my MBP. Which way ist the best way to do this? Can I drop the Icon to the Paperbasket. And that´s all? Or what shall I do. Please help me.

That should do it, but make sure that all of the Server
services are shut down before doing so.

  • How to disable OSX server 3 SMTP authentication

    Hi,
I upgraded my 10.5 server to 10.9 OSX server. The mail server is only used internally. I use a HP Multifuntion printer which I often use to scan documents and the printer would mail me the scans in PDF. In 10.9 the user have to authenticate in order to send mail via the SMTP server. Unfortunately the HP printer expects an open SMTP server.
I know that underneath OSX mail server Postfix is running. Is  there a way to dissable SMTP authentication so I can us my multifunction printer to mail me the scanned documents again?

    MrHoffman,
Thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction. I added my network to the mynetwork parameter and still got an error on the mail server. This was what I found in the log:
    NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from hpprinter.warmoezier.home[192.168.XX.XX]: 504 5.5.2 <NPIB32ACB>: Helo command rejected: need fully-qualified hostname; from=<XXXXXXXXXX> to=<XXXXXXXXXX> proto=ESMTP helo=<NPIB32ACB>
(I removed my mail addresses from the printout. It seems that the HP printer doesnot provide the fqdn in the HELO command.
    Then I replaced:
    smtpd_helo_restrictions = reject_non_fqdn_helo_hostname reject_invalid_helo_hostname
    with:
    smtpd_helo_restrictions = reject_invalid_helo_hostname
    This solved my problem.
I gues I have to replace the network with the exact printer address in the mynetworks parameter to be on the safe side concerning openrelays in my private network.
I edited the main.cf directly without using the postconf command or should I have used postconf?
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
    Peter.
    P.s.
btw is the command in your post correct?
    postconf -c /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix mynetworks -e "mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8, [::1]/128, 10.20.30.40"
    shouldn't it be:
    postconf -c /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix -e "mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8, [::1]/128, 10.20.30.40"

  • How to reboot osx lion after booting in win 7

Hi installed lion on MacBook. Booted into win 7 ( was dual boot in Osx). Can't reboot into lion now. If I choose ' reboot into Osx ' in windows boot camp - it reboots into win7. If I hold alt and reboot, it boots into lion, then restarts immediately into win 7. Have keynote to give in a few hours and am now desperate.
Sorry for spelling having to write this on iPad and autocrooect is a birch.

If you completely wipe the original Mac mini boot drive you will wipe the Server.app software an dlose it. You should make a backup first, perhaps by saving the entire boot drive as a Disk Image file on to another drive.
In terms of install 10.6, the 10.6 DVD will not boot on the new Mac mini even if you connect a DVD drive. You need to put the Mac mini in to FireWire Target Disk Mode and connect it to an older Mac that will allow booting from that DVD, then install on to the Mac mini (over FireWire), you then need to upgrade it using the 10.6.8 Combo Updater this will add the drivers needed for the new Mac mini.

  • I have installed OSX server but I want to go back to Mountain Lion. How do I do this?

Can some one tell my how to remove OSX Server completely and return my system to the stand alone instalation of OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.1, please?

OSX Server for Mountain Lion is just an additional service.
For installing it, you moved "Server.app" in your Application folder and then run it.
For removing it you get some software like "AppCleaner".
    You can download it HERE.
All you do now, move the "Server.app" to the "AppCleaner".
AppCleaner will list now all the files and folders that Server.app installed.
Restart your computer after you're done. There are most likely additional folder and configurations
but the main 'server' part should be gone. For everything else, look there:

  • How do I re-install my Mac OSX Server from scratch

    Hi,
I have purchased two MacMini Servers with 10.6 OSX Server software pre-installed.
I have changed the organization as our company name changed and run into license issues.
I want to re-install the Mac OSX Server software and start from scratch. How do I go about this. I tried yesterday for many hours to do so and the new installs are still running into duplicate license issues and other issues. What is the best approach to do re-install? I am willing to erase the internal Hard Disk and boot (with an external DVD optical drive) if that is the best way to go. What are the steps?
I have the original CDs or DVDs and have extra, external hard disks to do a Time Machine backup, etc.
    Thanks,
    Don

If you are looking to do a nuke and pave of the system, and you have an external optical drive, then yes, that is likely the most direct method. Connect the optical drive, insert the installation DVD, and reboot the system targeting the optical disk as the boot volume (you can do this by holding down the C key or the Option key during startup).
Now, if you do not have an optical drive, you can put the installation disk into another Mac running 10.6 and use the Remote Install Mac OS X application in your Utilities folder.
    Hope this helps

  • How do I install Mavericks without invoking the OSX Server Plugin?

How do I perfrom a clean install of Mavericks from the Recovery Partition without it automatically installing, and then invoking or executing the OSX Server Plugin that ultimately results in rendering open directory operable as well as the server.  I have ignored this continously, but the other day I went into the terminal and typed ARP -s that lists the shortname for the host of my MacBook Pro and it gave a totally different name than what I had given it in the wi-fi network interface under the WINS tab. More importantly, I do not want to install open directory nor the osx server plugin as it opens up more complexity than I want to deal with.  Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.  BTW, below are the steps I performed for installing Mavericks.
    1. Powered on the MacBook Pro and then hit the Option key.
    2. This took me into the Recovery Partition, whereby I went into the Disk Util and erased or formatted the hard-drive.
    3. I then clicked out of the Disk Utility and went into the Recovery Mode by clicking on reinstall the current OS.
    4. I went through all the prompts and the system downloaded a current version of Mavericks.
    5. After completion, I turned on my Macbook Pro and went through the prompts to install Mavericks.
    6. This is all I did, and I didn't download the OSX plugin nor invoke it in the new version of the Operating System.
I just assumed that it was a standalone version until I found the server for osx running with open directory invoked, the server invoked, along
with other components relative to a new standalone version.
Again, my question is simple: How can I reinstall Mavericks without it downloading and automatically
iinvoking the components as described above?

Hi. Because both Mavericks and Windows 8 are still new, they may not be free of error. Apple needs more time to perform more tests to ensure that these two different OS's will work properly without getting in conflicts. If it's posdible, I highly recommand you to downgrade back to Lion or Mountain Lion and install Windows 7 (if you have a copy of it). In my experience, all advises from Genius Bar members and computer articles confirm that  Windows 7 will work on Macs with Lion OS. It should also work on Mountain Lion. Besides Boot Camp, you could try to virtualize Windows OS and its applications by using VirtualBox, CrossOver and other VMs. I already have an Oracle VirtualBox but I would like to try Boot Camp since it allows me to enjoy almost all Windows features that may be limited in VMs.

  • How to use SSL certificates in OSX Server

I have setup OSX server with a host name that is pointed properly to my OSX server. My question is about using certificates that were purchased through my domain registrar.
I bought a cert and after the validation process, I was given a link to download 4 certificate files.
    AddTrustExternalCARoot.crt
    DV_NetworkSolutionsDVServerCA2.crt
    DV_USERTrustRSACertificationAuthority.crt
    [domain name].crt
So after downloading these and opening them one by one, I installed them in the keychain as a system cert.
The part I cant figure out is how to use the domain cert instead of the one that the server creates upon completion of setup (the self signed one).
On the certificate selection in the sidebar, I can choose Import a certificate identity, but when I drag my domain cert into the box, it shows up as a non-identity cert and the Import button is still grayed out. I dragged all four certs there and all of them show as non-identity certs.
If I go down the path of the Get a Trusted Certificate, it takes me through the CSR request which I dont think I need since i have my certificates already.
Am I missing a step? Or do I need to export from the keychain, then import into the server application? Seems like the new certificates should show up in the server application. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got the answer and wanted to post for anyone that happened to have this question.
During the SSL cert setup, it asks where your domain is hosted and since it was hosted by Network Solutions, I chose that option which doesnt do the CSR request. I had to choose Other/VPS.
Once I did that, I was able to generate a CSR in the server application and get my certificate issued again by pasting the request code on my registrars website. Once I received those certs, I dragged my domain cert into the Pending one listed in the certificate list.
Also I chose Apache/ModSSL as the type of server. Hope that helps and new people like myself in setting up the server application.

  • How to create global Contact list using OSX Server Contacts Service?

My goal is to create a global contact list for the use of my department at work. We currently have 5 MBP's and a Mac Mini Server running OSX Server.
I have read so many forum posts and so called "solutions" that my head is completly spinning... like a record... right round... you get the idea.
I talked with Apple Support, and they are going to walk me through the process of changing our network from "local" to a legitimate internet network. Enabling DNS and setting up open directory are some of the steps, and all in all i was impressed with the support i received. We did a complete walkthough of all the steps it would take to change everything, without actually making any changes (because I could not shut down the company server at the time I called).
All that being said, I have been reading that actually creating and sharing a global contact list (and enabling specific user access for read/write for said list) is not as simple as Apple is telling me. I have read so many horror stories about not being able to edit the list, having duplicate lists and entries, and many other problems. It seems that this "Contact Service" is not really what its billed as.
Im just looking for someone who has this already setup to shine some light on my questions/concerns. I have scoured the internet for information, and either i'm looking in the wrong place or I just happen to have the WORST possible combination of OS X versions, server versions and so on. I would expect a company who charges such high prices for its products to design them to ACTUALLY WORK how they are advertised to work!
Thanks in advance and a thousand kudos to anybody that can help!!!
    -John

That sounds like one viable option...
The only problem is that I'm not sure how that would behave once the client MBP's are taken off site and connect to the network over a VPN or something of that sort.
I figure since we have purchased the Server App and it contains the Contacts Service, I should try and get it to work that way (through that specific service on the server app).
I would really prefer to not have to install yet another piece of software just to do something that should already work (or have the ability to be configured to work). None of us here are "Power Users", and we are all learning as we go and I got the role of the "IT Guy" when it comes to setting everything up. I'm dealing with lifetime Windows users here, and I feel there is a need to keep everything literally as easy as possible to use.
I will keep your solution in the front of my mind though, as it sounds like that may work. I am not exactly 100% familiar with the OSX Server or the Mac OS yet, and I'm not positive where you would add the users (I couldn't just sit down and do what you suggested, i unfortunately would need a step by step solution so I don't fuss up our entire system).
If you feel like giving a step by step, that would be awesome just for future reference or for anyone else having similar problems. If not, I don't blame you at all.
Thanks for your reply, and if I find a clear-cut solution I will post it here!
    Thanks,

  • How to uninstall/remove OSX Server Demo?

    Hi all,

Back up your data and do an archive and install of the client software.
If it was me, I would back up the data, boot from the client disk and format the drive, or use my disk image I made of the machine prior to installing server.

  • How does OSX Server work

Hi, I have 4 iMacs and 2 Macbook Pro's that have recently been brought from separate locations to one place, though all are currently working independently.
I am looking into setting up OSX server so that everything can be shared etc. I was just wondering if one of my Mac's will act as the central server and contain all the data or it will be a case of all data remaining on each Mac and just shared across the network when needed. Its just that I don't think any of the Mac's has enough storage space to store everything across all units. Thanks in advance. Craig

Would all of our data across all computers then be stored within that 2TB? If so are there options for expansion of that storage.
Well, this depends on how you set up the environment.  First a thought about your data, then a thought about the storage.
You could store home folders on the server and everyone logs in directly to the server.  But, if you are using Photoshop (or even iPhoto), you will not have a pleasant experience.  User homes can remain on the individual systems and the users simply copy shared data up to the server.  Now, if you are looking to create an asset library, you might want to look at products like Cumulus or Portfolio.  Depending on your workflow, some form of digital asset management software may streamline your environment.
As far as storage, Apple provides a mini configuration that offers two 1 TB drives.  These drives do not come in a raid so the OS is on one drive and the other drive is just sitting there.  You can use the server in this capacity but you then have no redundancy on the OS drive or the data drive.  If you RAID the two drives into a mirror, then your usable capacity becomes 1TB but you gain redundancy (redundancy ≠ backup).  I will admit, I remain a fan of the direct attached storage model where you have a host system and you have storage.  By separating the storage from the host, you have the ability to move the storage should the host have trouble.  Perfect case in point.  A Mac mini Server is covered under Apple Care.  This is a consumer level warranty agreement.  So, if there was a problem with your mini and all your data is in the mini, then you are likely down for three days (1 day to diagnose, 1 day to get part of send unit in for repair, and the third to get it operational again).  I simply can not come to terms with sending a server with my enterprise data into Apple for repair.  This does not sit well.  But if the data is on an attached array, then the host can completely melt down.  I simply need to connect the array to another device and I have my data.
Then, would server back-ups be done by an external hard disk with storage that exceeds 2TB and time machine? Or is there a more advisable solution?
Realistically, a backup volume should be a minimum of 2x the capacity of your source volume.  This allows for historical increments.  Perhaps one of the best primers I have seen on backup is a study funded by the Library of Congress.  Check out this site http://dpbestflow.org/backup/backup-overview and take a look at the 3-2-1 backup rule.  This is a simple rule that nearly every company can follow.  But, it comes down to budget.  Too often I see companies that plan for the server and the storage and then never consider the cost of backup.  This is a crime as data is or currency.  Machines can be replaced often in minutes.  Walk into store and buy a new machine.  But your data... hundreds or thousands of hours or work can not be reconstructed as easily (or if ever).  Likewise, the American Red Cross conducted a multiyear study that concluded that "as many as 40% of small businesses do not reopen after a major disaster." (http://www.redcross.org/images/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m4240206_PrepYourBusfo rtheUnthinkable.pdf)   I can not stress the importance of backup enough.  And backup alone is not enough.  You must test restoration on a regular schedule.  What good is a backup if it doesn't work when you need it?
So, how do you backup?  This will depend on many factors.  They include number of locations you have access to, budget, capacity of data, etc.  Keep in mind that many cloud solutions (Crash Plan Pro, Carbonite, etc) provide a means of satisfying the off-site requirement.  However, if you are starting with a large data set, it can take many weeks (without a seed backup) to get your data replicated.  Many will simply use Time Machine as the starting point.  This is a good place to start.  But you must monitor it.  Trust.  But verify.
Ok, sorry for the rambling.  Actually enjoying a lunch break for a change
