You can get that via AppleScript:

This will tell you how many unread Junk emails you have. Substitute any other mailbox name.

Unread mail highlight

So far I'm loving all the new features in Lion, though some are hard to get used to, like the scrolling gesture, which reacts opposite to the mouse. Although I love the new Mail, my eyes are having a hard time with the read and unread mail. It seems that the read and unread mail look exactly the same, the only difference between them is the blue dot on the left side of the unread. I've checked the preferences and even though "Display unread messages with bold font" is checked, I still see no difference between them. All of the senders display in bold font and the followed text in plain. Is there a bug that is preventing me from seeing the unread mail in bold font? Also, is there any way to make the unread mail display highlighted? I think this would make it really easy on everybody's eyes. Any help is much appreaciated.

I ahve this problem too, my macbook is set up as an imap account for gmail, say I get an email and it shows as new in my gmail, iphone and macbook, and I then read it in my gmail, it is marked read on my iphone but stays as unread on my macbook.
This is really annoying as if I read emails during the day on another computer I can come back to them all being new on the macbook.
Is there a fix for this?

On the iPad, using the mail app, there is no way to do what you are asking without tapping the flag icon and marking the item as unread. Have you tried the OWA app for the iPad? It may have that functionality, but I haven't tested it as you need an Office 365 subscription with Exchange support to use the app.

Not possible. In order to read an email in the preview pane requires opening the message. You can mark a message that you've read as unread after reading it.

I don't know how this feature works in Outlook / Entourage... knowing Microsoft, it's probably proprietary and does not follow certificate standards, but that's a guess. If they used standard certificate technology, in order for you to send mail encrypted to your client, she would have to have sent you a digitally signed message. Then, you can send her an encrypted e-mail. If you start an e-mail message to her, is the little lock icon to the right of the From field black or gray? If it's black, you've already got her certificate, and just have to click that lock to encrypt the message. If it's not, you don't have her certificate, and she will need to send you a signed message.

Can't find a 'phantom' unread mail or mark it as being read

I'm using mail on various machines to access an Exchange server account. It generally works with no problems, but on my work MacPro (and only on this computer not the iMac at home, various laptops, iPad, iPhone etc) mail tells me there is an unread message. However, I can't find this message and it's not there when I use a webmail interface to access the same account. No problem, I figured I could just right click on the mailbox and 'mark all messages as read', but this doesn't work! I like to keep a clear inbox with no unread messages and it's driving me nuts!
I'm guessing that there's some strange synching conflict, but don't know how to solve it. Any ideas, please?

I tried both, but neither has worked.
a) Rebuilding the mailbox revealed another unread mail that actually existed, but didn't remove the 'phantom'.
b) The SM trick uncovered lots of unread news items from Apple, but not the 'phantom'.
Thanks for your help, but I might need to do something more drastic like deleting the account and adding it again.

i restored my itouch 2G and then when i opened my mail app i got over 50 unread messages. but of course i read each one already before the restore when they came in one by one. how can put the unread mail as read without reading each one?

Depending on what type of account it is, you might be able to mark the messages unread on your computer and then as read.
If it's IMAP, it should mark the ones on the iPod as read too.
POP, probably not.
