How to reconnect media....

So I saved 2 projects in Final Cut Express 4 onto a jump drive and then tried to re-open those projects on a different computer. When I opened the project on my home computer, it opened, but everything said "media offline". I was told to go back to the other computer, save the "capture scratch" file and then put those files on my computer. But now I'm stuck, I'm not sure where to go from there. Any help?

Hello and welcome to the Apple Discussion forums.
An FCE Project file only contains the instructions that result from the editing operations you do on your video. It does not contain the media itself. The source media files are needed in addition to the FCE Project file in order to work with the project.
It sounds like you only copied the FCE Project files to your jump drive. You will also need to copy your source media files and put them on your 2d computer. They are typically found in your +username/Documents/Final Cut Express Documents/Capture Scratch folder.+ But be forewarned - video files can be very big (1 hour of DV is ~13GB; 1 hour of high def can be up to 40GB)

  • How do I reconnect media?

I created a one hour video. I moved all of my media files to a different disk. When I open the video, the media cannot be located. I try the dialog boxes to reconnect but nothing reconnects so that I can work with the video file. How do I reconnect?
    Greg

    Hi Greg
In Final Cut Pro, select all the clips and choose File menu > Reconnect Media...  to open the "Reconnect FIles" window. Now press the Locate... button in that window to open the "Reconnect" window. Next, in the Reconnect window, make sure that the Matched Name and Reel Only and Reconnect All Files in Relative Path checkboxes are ticked. Make a note of which specific file is being searched for and then navigate to and select that file. Press the Choose button. That file, and all others in the same directory structure, should reconnect, returning your project media to its correct Online status.
    Hope it helps

  • FAQ: My files are missing from the Library, or How to reconnect your images?

    What is the Lightroom Library?
The Library module of Lightroom can be used to arrange, codify, systemize, group, and classify your media. When you import your images and video into the Library, you are adding information about your files to a catalog. Your files remain on your hard drive where they were, unless you are importing them from a camera, in which case the files are copied to your hard drive to a location of your choosing.
    What is a Lightroom catalog?
The catalog is a database that stores information about the files you've imported into Lightroom. When importing a file, the first thing Lightroom does is collect the file's name and location on the hard drive. If the file has any attached compatible metadata, such as keyword tags, these are imported as well. You can use multiple catalogs and your catalogs can be carried forward from version to version.
Why does Lightroom say my files are missing?
Since the catalog database only stores information about your file, and not the file itself, if any of that information is changed outside of Lightroom, the connection to the file is lost. There are three ways this can happen: the file name is changed, the file location is changed, or the file has been deleted. If you need to rename, move, or delete a file, you can do so within the Library module, and then the connection is not lost.
    What is Reconnecting?
When a file has been renamed, moved, or deleted, the catalog database needs to be updated with that new information. The Reconnection process allows you to point out a file's new name, it's new location, or to delete the database entry on your file if the file no longer exists on your hard drive.

    Dude! Where are my photos?

Similar happened to me when i moved my iTunes library from XP to Win 8.1. Apps were in iTunes but would not sync to iPhone - could not find oritinal file. Win Xp and 8.1 have different file paths for My Documents and My Music. Locate the folder within iTunes called Mobile Applications. It should have a file with an IPA extension for each application. Add that folder to library. That will refresh the iTunes database so that it knows where to find the apps. I had to do that to my entire library (music, podcasts, etc)

  • Reconnect Media - Will only do one file at a time. (all files is checked)

I found one Google search that said this may be a bug... http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1047891 and it's really bothering me since I have about 500 more media files to connect.
When I select multiple files in my Project File Browser, right click, hit Reconnect Media... It opens the Reconnect Files window. Then I hit "Locate", navigate to the folder holding the files (Reconnect All files in Relative Path is checked), select the file, confirm, then hit connect... Only one file (the first one selected) reconnects.
It's worse than that for me, now the file is Connected in my Project File browser, but it still doesn't reconnect in my sequences. So now I have to go in the sequence and right click on the individual clips, and manually reconnect those as well.
At this point it take 6 plus clicks per file missing, times two because I have to reconnect these clips in the sequences as well... times 500 because that's how many offline files I have.
My lord, I've already done this to half of the project, I can't do it any more... where am I going wrong or is this a bug? If so, please tell me there is a workaround.
The file I'm working in is a feature film, so it's huge... I can't start over at this point.
    Thanks for your time!
    -Monty

The only multiple files it will reconnect are the ones that are already connected.
I hope I figured it out but need more advice. It may be that the files that won't connect do not have a visible file extension ".mov". How can I get these files to shoe ".mov" at the end of their names without manually renaming them all?
And the reason this is happening is I was using reference files to edit a movie, now I've been given new hard drives with the final uncompressed footage but same file names for each clip... plus the new hard drives I'm using have different names.
    Thanks for your time!

  • Strange Reconnect Media Problem

I recently moved my computer to a new residence and had to disconnect my external media drives from my computer. When I started up FCP yesterday, I found, not surprisingly, that all my clips were disconnected from their media files. So, I proceeded to try to reconnect them. Just as a test, I selected one video clip file in my browser and hit reconnect media. But when I did this, the only "file" that showed up in the list was the character ". Just the quotation mark. So, I am unable to reconnect " to any file, because I have no file named ". The strange thing about this is that if I close this project (which is a close copy of another project) and open the original project, all my files show as connected to their media. For a variety of reasons, I don't want to use the original project file. I want to use the copy. Any ideas why this project (which I've used for 6 months with no problems) is suddenly not connecting to the media but instead is giving me quotation marks?
    Thanks!

I echo the posters above. This is a major bummer Apple! How is this fixed? In my scenario, I started a project on my raid, had to pull in clips from a network drive , which ended up becoming offline. When it was placed online again, the clips had to be reconnected, and instead of there being clip names for these in the reconnect media window, there is only " any attempts to get around this either by selecting multiple clip names or single ones are met with "
Any help would greatly be appreciated!!

  • How to reconnect files that I can't find on my computer now?

When I got onto my computer and went to Final Cut Express, a couple of my files had apparently gone offline and whilst I know how to fix that I don't know how to reconnect files that I for some reason can't find in the same file, on my computer, that they just were in. I was able to reconnect 2 of the 3 files that were offline but the third I am having trouble with. I did not delete it (it's a sound clip) (and I know I didn't because I looked in my trash) and it's neither on my desktop or the file for this project like it normally would be and I'm wondering if Final Cut moved it or if its hidden or something. I did also search my computer and couldn't find it.
This is a project I am working on that needs to be turned in tomorrow (which was totally realistic until I decided to check on it once more) and now I think I can get an extension until Thursday, so I would GREATLY appreciate any helpful tips or advice anyone can give!
    Thanks so much!
    Sarah N.

    Hello Sarah,
FCE should not delete anything from your computer as it deals only with file paths rather than the real media files.
If this audio file is not anywhere to be found on your computer then you will have to get another one if possible.
Did you move any files using the Finder the FCE relied on?
The only time I have heard of files going missing like this is when they are bounced from FCE to Sound Track or Motion.
If you did not do this then it's a mystery???

  • Reconnecting Media to offline clips

    Hi all,
I have an interesting situation with a client.  Never seen this problem/scenario before.
    Here is the setup....
--> Client is logging all footage on her computer.
--> I provided her with a formatted Excel document that will allow me to import a batch list.
--> I converted her Excel logs to a txt document, then successfully imported the batch list into FCP.
--> After importing the log, FCP appears to like the log information.  Everything is in its proper column,  the clip icon (still with a red slash through it) and all of the necessary info (Clip name, Media Start and Media End, Log notes, Reel, etc) are all properly placed.  FCP Even calculates the duration of the clip for us.
The problem is, when I try to "Reconnect Media" in an effort to connect the log information in FCP to the actual clips, it is a massive fail.
What I am seeing when trying to Reconnect Media....
--For starters, I notice that all of the logging entries in the browser are checkmarked as offline.
--When I try to Reconnect Media, the RM dialog is asking me to search for the NAME of the individually logged clip, rather than the REEL.
--RM cannot successfully reconnect media.  At best, I turn off the Match Name option (Even though the REEL name is spelled perfectly in comparison to the actual video file), then manually select the clip to reconnect to.  Interestingly, upon reconnecting, FCP has renamed the REEL in the browser as "0", rather than using the actual reel name.
Any help as to how I can import the clients log files(36 pages of info) and connect them to the actual video files?
    Thanks,
    Matt

If the clips are not actually missing, you could try to refresh the timeline by using cmd-0 and then going to the timeline options tab. Then select name only where it says "thumbnail display". Press ok to accept the change, then repeat the process to add thumbnails back to your timeline.

  • What the.. where the.. Can't reconnect media files??? Source file info gone

This is bizarre. Many files went offline and now it won't tell me what is offline to reconnect.
    picture....
    http://www.redmoonlight.com/Picture3.png
Out of this 90 minute video, there are two 5 minute sequences that went offline. (I'm color grading every 5 minutes of the whole project using Color.) At some point without realizing it, it went offline and now the auto save doesn't have the file old enough for me to recover. (In the auto save vault, I just changed my # of copies per project from 40 to 100!)
My files are still on the drive (they were never moved!) but the source names are lost in Final Cut's sequence. A couple of files within the sequence with the offline file are still online. I don't know how 95% of the sequence went offline while the other 5% didn't.
I'm able to look at my original sequence (before exporting to Color) to compare I'll have to import the file one by one and then sync it up. HUGE TIME CONSUMING!
How did the media source name from my clips vanish? (I still love FCP.....)

    Thanks for the response.
I haven't moved any media files. Even if I did, I could easily reconnect the files.
The problem is the clips in the timeline and browser lost it's metadata on the name of it's source file. The clips has no idea what the original file's name was. In the picture, the list of offline files won't list. It has no idea what to look for.
I'm reconnecting them one by one. Here are the steps I have to take to get back on track:
1 - Go to last sequence (before send to Color seq.) and see what the clip looks like
2 - Find the media on the drive and get it's original name
3 - Go back to FCP and manually relink it.
This has happened before but only to a couple of clips which was quick to fix with this same method. I'm wondering how the clips lost it's info?

  • ??? can BRIDGE helps PREMIERE reconnect media ???

    Dear,
I'm using Premiere CS3 (also have Bridge). I'm editing on AspectHD, and I'd like to have my co-editor working on his machine with DV version of the footage.
To have him have exactly what I've got so far, I went this way:
    - saved a copy of my project file
    - offlined all video clips it copy and kept audio files online (to avoid
having to reconnect them, by having my co-editor have them in the same
drive path and directory as I do so they reconnect automatically)
    - I imported CFHD project in a brand new DV project (so that my co-editor
can work in it and have proper specs)
So now I have an offline DV version of my project file with audio online, but when I try to reconnect medias with the DV clips, I need to reconnect them one by one; even more, I need to select them 2 times each before Premiere recognizes and accepts them as the proper media.
When I just Make Offline and Reconnect Medias in my project file and keep the HD media, I just need to select and tie one file in each folder that hold clips and Premiere does the rest, but now it won't do it for this particular project.
I talked with ADOBE tech support and the guy told me it was how Premiere works, but couldn't help me out as to if BRIDGE could help me help PREMIERE reconnect all my file in batch instead of spending 1-2 days doing so.
Anyone got any idea how to use Bridge in this case ?
    Thank you.

Nope. Just like Premiere, AE will interpret your offline files as the proper sources and require you to reconnect each of them manually. Even using proxies would have no benefits here as it does not update the timelien structure. I'm wondering, though, since you both use Premiere, can't you just export an EDL or AAF and then re-import? I rarely use Premiere, but seems exactly what you would want to do. Would be simple on Avid systems...

  • Reconnect media not working

I recently moved an entire project and its media to a larger external hard drive.  Now (as would be expected) the media need to be reconnected.  However when I open the project, the reconnect media box says there are 1600 files to reconnect.  Yet the list is entirely blank -- making reconnecting impossible.  Same thing happens within the project if I click on one file and try to connect it individually, it brings up a completely blank box under files to connect.  I'm not sure how to fix this so I can reconnect my media.  Please help!  I've tried closing the project, restarting the computer.  But don't know what else to do.

Interesting development...tried to open a version of the project from autosave from last week before I moved the files to the new drive.  Here's the error message I get up on opening the file and when I try to reconnect media.  Not sure what this means.

  • Reconnect Media from Soundtrack Pro

I exported a clip from FCP to Soundtrack Pro and cannot seem to Reconnect Media in FCP; when I go through the selection process to reconnect in FCP; I can pick it but the clip is still declared offline/missing. How do I get this fixed using FCP or Soundtrack Pro? Thanks.

Is the menu item *File > Export* greyed out?
If so, it's probably because you have the audio open in the audio file editor. The only option from here is to Save As.
If you put the audio in a track of a multitrack project then File>Export should be available to you.

  • How to relink media in CS6

When I first open a project in PrPro it asks a strange request to relink media.  No files have been moved and all my media is on one hard drive.  I understand how to relink media but this is strange.  It asks "Where is the File "V1-etc, etc, etc?  I've never labeled a clip V1.
Could this be pertaining to the V1 video track?
Could this have happened if I updated PrPro, not thinking, with a Premiere Pro CC update on my CS6 program and this is causing the problem?
I have a timeline in PrPro that was worked on in Resolve.  In the timeline it shows all my clips offline.  But, in my bins, the clip that is shown offline in the timeline is ONLine in my bin.
How can I relink the media to get it to show correctly in the timeline.
I have a suspension this is a result of updating something I should not have updated.
    Dan you advise?
    Mandla

It seems PrPro created a bin as well.   There's no way I'm creating a bin labeled like this.  The one clip that you see is relinked was from me highlighting all the off line clips, choosing that clip to relink in the hopes that all would come online.  This labeling doesn't make sense.  I did have archived timelines labeled The Broken 527, but other than that nothing more.

  • Can only Reconnect Media one file at a time

I posted this problem almost two months ago, and was told at the time that it was a bug in FCP 6.0 and 6.0.1, but was fixed in 6.0.2. Well, I finally upgraded to 6.0.2, and the problem remains. What is strange, is that after I upgraded, the first two bins of files reconnected correctly, but ever since then none of the others have (and I tried the third bin right after the second, no changes at all to the computer). So I'm having this problem with both my G5 dual 2 gig (OS 10.4.9) and my Intel Macbook Pro (OS 10.4.11). Any ideas? The problem:
I'm trying to relink media I have on an external firewire drive, but when I click Relink, FCP only relinks the first file in my list. The files are all there, in the same location, and have not had any name or reel changes - each one relinks fine individually, but I can't get FCP to link more than 1 file at a time.
Procedures: I select all the files from a certain reel that are listed as being offline, then File>Reconnect Media. All the files I've selected are listed in the top half of the window, with the first file underlined. I have Search Single Location checked. I select Locate (though same thing happens if I select Search and locate the file myself), Show: Video Files (tho same thing happens if I select All Files), I've checked Match Name and Reel Only (though again same thing happens if this is not checked), and I checked Reconnect All Files in Relative Path. FCP finds the first file, and I click "Choose" - and the first file is listed in the bottom part of the window, but only that file.
Everything else in FCP works fine.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I am not having the same issue, and I am running 10.5.2 OS and 6.0.2 FCP. I also have FCP 6.0.2 on a computer running 10.4.11 and I have duplicate media on both systems, and bring a file back and forth and don't have to connect the media one at a time. This was a wide spread problem with 6.0.1, and the 6.0.2 update fixed that for most people. Why you are still having that problem is odd. Try trashing your FCP prefs with FCP RESCUE, and also try repairing your permissions with the Disk Utility.

I would recommend setting the wireless encryption on the AirPort Express BEFORE configuring it for the AirPort Extreme in this case. This issue also comes up often when configuring AirPorts into a WDS.
If setting up security in my recommend order does not work, temporarily connect the Express by Ethernet to the Extreme; make the security changes, and then, move the Express back to the desired location.
