How to recover deleted browser history using time machine on osx lion

I turned my time machine backup on. Deleted some of my browser history. And restored the entire App, Google chrome, hoping my history would reappear. However it didn't. Same with Safari.
What am I missing? Or rather, how to restore just the hisotry and not the rest of the application?

I'm surprised because I just opened History.plist in TextWrangler and all the history listings are in there. There may be some interaction with other parts of what Safari saves during a session, and the only other approach that comes to mind is more serious surgery. The History.plist you found is contained in a folder called "Safari" along with a bunch of other stuff. At the risk of losing anything else you've done in Safari since then (e.g., new bookmarks), try restoring the entire Safari folder from Time Machine, being sure that the TM point you've selected is before the deletion. You might want to copy the current Safari folder to the Desktop first, just in case. And, again, Safari must not be running during the attempt.
There is also a Safari directory in /Users/username/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari which has a history component in it but I'm not sure if you need that restored, too.

  • How do I delete all backups of Time Machine in OSX 10.7.2?

I had some huge photo files (100gb) that were on my computer for a few weeks and have now been processed and deleted. I suspect that Time Machine backed them up on my external hard drive. How can I delete all backups from Time Machine and start with a fresh series of backups?
    Tks

    That would work also.
I like to reformat the disk just to rebuild the directory when I clean one.

  • How to recover deleted browsing history?

    Hi All,
I accidentally cleared all my browsing history in Safart via the Clear All History menu. Is there a way that i can recover the deleted history details?
I didn't have Timemachine turned on.

does it make a differnec if the time machine is on
Not really. Your browsing history changes all the time, with every page you visit (or don't visit). New things are added while others are discarded. It would serve you no purpose to recover it anyway, unless you're snooping for something about where other users might have visited.

  • How do I recover my files after using time machine restore?

Hello guys! I have been using Time Machine to back up my Macintosh HD into an external disk in August this year. Considering the limited storage of my external disk, I have excluded all of my photos and musics to be backed up. Today I got some problems of my system and started using time machine to restore my computer to the state of August. After restoring, I found all of my photos and musics and other important files which have been excluded to be backed up by time machine are missing. What a disaster. Is there any way to recover all the missing files? Or is it possible to undo today's time machine recovery? Many thanks in advance!

many thanks for your reply. But for the current matter, do you have any other great ideas for me to take back all of my missing files. I will definitely buy a lager storage disk to back up all the files. But how could I solve the current issue? I have already tried the software you mentioned in the lien, it seems no help. Thank you anyway!

  • How can i delete a 'backups' from time machine for a computer i no longer have

i have been using my time capsule for a few years now, everything was great until my imac died and i had to replace it
when i did, the time capsule worked perfectly, as it allowed me to "migrate" all my backed up data onto my new machine, joy
but now, as it wants to start its backups of the new imac, there just isnt enough disk space on the drive, and i suspect this is due to every file on my new machine is marked as never have being backed up which means i need like 400G, and most of the time capsule's space is still consumed by the old backups
how can i remove this old back up from the time capsule without reformatting the whole drive (i have other machines that are still using the backup service and i dont want that interrupted)
it just seems like, since i am no longer on the old machine, i cant access that machine's backup in order to delete them (through the time machine interface), and i cant seem to find a single tutorial on how to do this that is written in non-programmer speak (i really dont feel comfortable cracking open terminal and command-lining this sort of thing)
am i just nuts or is this really all that uncommon a problem with no easy solution?!?
any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance

  • HT201250 How to recover mails of outlook from time machine

How to recover mails of outlook from time machine

    This worked for me:
From Time Machine, restore a good backup of the entire  "/Users/james/Library/Application Support/Address Book"  folder to a different location, like to a folder on your desktop.
(note: the Library folder typically won't show up in Finder. To make it visible, in Terminal, issue this command:
            defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
then restart Finder:  killall Finder  )
Go offline.  Do whatever you need to do to get completely disconnected from the internet (turn off Wireless, unplug the ethernet cable, etc.).  Otherwise, iCloud will immediately overwrite your restore.
Delete the real folder:  /Users/james/Library/Application Support/Address Book
Copy your restore (at the different location), to the real location ( /Users/james/Library/Application Support/Address Book )
Restart Contacts.  Your restored data you want should be there.  Before going online again, Export all these contacts (File - Export - etc...)
Go online again.  iCloud will wipe out your Address Book with what's on iCloud. Re-import contacts as needed from your Export.

  • ICloud notes deleted; trouble restoring using Time Machine.

All of my notes got deleted via iCloud on both my Mac and iPhone. I tried using Time Machine in the Mail app but for each note it says "Message not cached" and when I try to restore them my Notes folder remains blank. Any suggestions?

Time Machine backs up the file 'as it is'. Its just like copying and pasting the file to an External HD and then dragging it back, would keep the file exactly the same.
The best way to find out, is to try it! This is what I did. Even though there was no need. Get a random photo from the Internet, add it to iPhoto - make sure TM has backed up. (Does it every hour), then delete it and go to TM and restore.
I tried it with a whole album, and restored it. It just came back. Fantastic.
So in answer to your question - Yes TM will bring it back as it was.
The only problem is TM only backs up every hour. You cant do it yourself. (I dont think). So if you were to change a file, save it and then undo or delete it - All within an hour. TM wouldn't have backed up the changes.
    Hope this helps.

Apple does not support backing up to a network share. Why? Who knows. but you can find a "hack" here:

  • ITunes library is on external hd.  how do i back it up using Time Machine?

I'm saving my iTunes library to an external library since I'll go way over the 500GB of my Mac mini.  How do I back up the iTunes library using Time Machine? Can I back it up on the external same hard drive?  AppleCare had me partition the drive into 2 partitions.  1 for Time machine and 1 for iTunes library.  Can I back up the library to the other partition?
    Thanks

    1. Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences and set it not to exclude that partition.
    2. Yes, but you shouldn't. If the drive fails, it'll wipe both out.

  • How do I delete folders listed in Time Machine that are no longer good?

I AM TRYING TO DELETE FOLDERS ON MY TIME MACHINE THAT I NO LONGER NEED:

    I WANT TO DELETE:
    PREV-ELEMENTS
    DIGI FILES_PE
    DIGI FILES-PE-ACDS
When I checked the Help INstructions it tell me to Highlight the file and click the Actions menu (Gear icon) from the toolbar.
Select “Delete all backups of <this file>”.
BUT...when I do that the Gear icon only shows "Move to Trash" Not “Delete all backups of <this file>”.
So when I try to move the old folders to the trash it tells me that the operation cannot be done?

  • How to fix podcast privileges when using time machine backup on another mac

    hello,
my imac broke down the other day and is now at the menders. i had been using time machine with a LaCie 500gb external hard drive.
i am now using my macbook pro as a substitute and want to use the itunes library from my LaCie instead of copying everything over again. I have managed to achieve this by changing the library destination in itunes preferences. However, when i try to "get" the latest podcasts that usually subscribe to, it says "you do not have enough access privileges for this operation". similarly, when i try to buy anything from the itunes store, it will not let me download, giving me an error 5000 message instead. i had signed in correctly by the way. the purchased songs are still in the downloads folder but greyed out.
any advise would be much appreciated. i'm not that technically minded so please spell anything out to me!

johndave, did anyone ever respond to your post?

  • How do I restore the iMac using Time Machine?, How do I restore the iMac using Time Machine?

My Outlook 2011 shows no messages which started right after I ran  SyncMate.  I decided to restore  my system using Time Machine, but that did not make Outlook show my emails.  Outlook indicates that I have several messages, but none appear.  Suggestions please.

    Thanks den.thed,
Apologies for not replying back sooner - I've been away.
Although your suggestion helped me in getting a copy of Lion that I could use, it didn't help with the restore from Time Capsule issue.  I had to download the Lion app onto my MacBook & then transfer it across but it wouldn't let me upgrade my OS for some reason, so I ended up wiping the iMac completely and restoring via my Snow Leopard install disk.  For some reason, this time, it let me have the option of using Setup Assistant to access the Time Capsule for a complete restore.
Now, over a week later, with various bits of tweaking and reinstalling some apps that didn't seem to come across, I have my system back.
    Thanks for the help anyway.
    Cheers,

  • Unable to recover lost Secure Notes using Time Machine

I inadvertently reset my default keychain.  Upon discovering my error, I used Time Machine to restore an earlier login.keychain from user/library/keychains.  All passwords, keys and certificates appear to have been successfully restored.  However, all of the secure notes--of which there were dozens--remain missing.
From reading similar threads I thought that restoring the login.keychain file would restore secure notes, but this didn't happen.  Does anyone have a suggestion?
I'm on an intel iMac running Lion, 10.7.2.  Thanks in advance.

    Here's what worked for me:
Restore from Time Machine the folder ~user/library/keychains.  Note that your libary (and all its subfolders) are now invisible by default in Lion. There are a number of ways to reveal it, including those discussed here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/161156/2011/07/view_library_folder_in_lion.html
Look in the restored folder and you'll see a number of files that end with the extention ".keychain", for example....
    login.keychain
...and any other keychains you may have previously created yourself.  Most likely, your secure notes are in the old login.keychain file.  Run the program Keychain Access (which you can find in the folder Applications/Utilities) and add back your old .keychain files by pulling down File-->Add Keychain. Your restored login.keychain should load automatically, but if it doesn't try adding it manually as just described.
    Hope this helps.  Good luck!

Yesterday I deleted all the printers and and after reinstalling the printer drivers from the printer disc, the printer cannot find the software, so how do retore the printer preferences from time machine?

The printer is a Samsung CLX-3180 series.  I have downloaded the printer drivers from Apple:

"Can't install the software for the Samsung CLX-3180 Series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."  Which I don't understand as i have downloaded the new drivers and the CLX-3180 is listed as a covered printer.
