How to recover hard disc passwords???

Hi,
I just downloaded the new hard disc firmware for my Z61m. I entered the BIOS to disable the hard disc password and found that I have forgotten the Master hard disc password!!! How this can be recovered? I can't find any option in ThinkVantage options. Please help,

As this is a new issue for me, I believe I had the incorrect approach, maybe you can help me. What I want to do is recover a few files in my desktop, and some information i had on the iCal application and the Mail application as well.As I do not want to do a full migration into this computer (which is not mine) I believe that starting the damaged MBP in Target mode should allow me to search and cop the files I need. But:
1. Can I open the Ical and mail apps to look for the info I need while reading it as an external HD ?
2. Do the target machine (my friends) still need to be updated to ML o Mavs so that it recognizes my MBP as an external drive if starting it in Target mode ? (no migration assistant)

Hi,
Unfortunately, business machines such as Probooks or Elitebooks have more stringent security than consumer models - they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial No. and the code is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case.
If you Contact HP Business support they should be able to send you a customised SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password.

How to recover a lost passwords?

Hi everyone,
I recently tried to help a friend in installing software she has for her Mac.
I was prompted for a password but she could not remember what her password was since she has not installed anything for a while.
I thought it was kind of careless of her not to write it down but I did not give her a speech about it.
Can anyone inform me how to recover of change passwords please?

Click Restart at the login window
While the computer is restarting, hold down "Command-S" until you see text scrolling through the window. This boots the computer into single user mode.

When the Localhost% prompt reappears, type:
passwd root
It will then ask you to type the new root password twice, so do so.
After entering the new password, type:
reboot
At the login window, enter username root wih the new password. Once you are connected, you can use the Multiple Users application (/Applications/Utilities) to change your normal user's password, or create a new user account.

Safari 1.3.2 quiting and how to optimize hard disc - OS 10.3.9 eMac

My three year extended warranty ended this spring as did software updates and the disc optimizing after each update installation. I've noticed Safari is getting slower and quiting more frequently and it's getting worse. Could this be due to not optimizing the hard disc? Is there a shareware download for optimizing the hard disc? Thanks in advance,

The performance of your computer is not related to the expiration of your extended warranty. Panther (OS X 10.3.9) is no longer supported by Apple, so there will be no more updates. The optimization process which followed installation from software updates in Apple Menu > Softare Update was essentially an optimization of the OS to integrate the update rather than an optimization of the Hard Disk Drive. (Please post back for more information on HDD optimization/defragmentation).
The deteriorating performance of your computer is likely related to lack of proper OS maintenance. The article Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance offers helpful advice on how to do this. Please read through the article and post back with any questions.
I recommend that you begin with Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior

I don't know the administrator's password, does anyone know how to recover it? I am the administrator, and I'm posting this from a standard account. Not being able to log into MY account limits what I am able to do.

I don't believe you can recover it. You can reset it without knowing the old one:

How to remove hard drive password on a Portege M400-170 ?

I've read a lot of things in this forum, in the user manual, I even phoned the support Toshiba and i've still no answer to my problem.
At the first use of the PC, i defined a hard drive password. I now want to remove this password.
The user manual and the forum advise me to open the bios configuration, under windows, wich is supposed to offer the possibility to change and remove password. No option, no possibility to change nor remove the password.
The phone support tell me that if the bios configuration under windows do not show the option to change or remove password, I have no way to do this (!!?!).
I need your knowledge and your help :)

I understand this sentence in the context of "If you forget your password".
I have no doubt you are right but i still search because some informations let me hope it's possible ;-)
In fact, i think this hdd password prevent me to restore my system with, for example, Norton Ghost (when i boot on the restore cd, i can not see my hdd)...
Perhaps it's another problem, i don't really know.

How to add hard disc to time capsule

Just got new Time Capsule which works well with my MacBook pro. it says a hard disc can be added by USB but when I plugged it in it is not recognised.
Help please

Make sure that the hard drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Check to see if the drive is recognized by using AirPort Utillty as follows:
Open up AirPort Utility and click on the Time Capsule icon
Click Edit in the smal window that appears
Click the Disks tab at the top of the window
If the drive is recognized, the drive name will appear here. In the example below, the drive is named WD Drive.
If you have checked to make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)....also known as HFS+.....and the drive still does not appear in the AirPort Utility check, then the USB port on the Time Capsule may not be providing enough power for the drive.....even if the drive has its own power supply.
The solution in this case is to add a powered USB hub to the Time Capsule and then connect the hard drive to the powered USB hub.

The only way to reformat (erase) and restore to factory settings is by booting from the install disc that came with the Mac. Apple install discs are, "machine specific" meaning they can only be used on the Mac they shipped with.

I don't know what happened. Explaining it general will make me depressed because I'm on my macbook on a COMPLETELY NEW SLATE without my existing files. Okay, well, I was asked to select language, username, password, etc as if it was new. I've had my macbook for over 1 year and a half.

Does anyone else have access to your computer? It sounds like someone erased the Macintosh HD partition, or Repartitioned the complete physical drive, and reinstalled OS X on it.
To my knowledge this does not just happen out of the blue. It take physical access to the computer to do that or it was connected to another Mac in Target Disk Mode and erased.
