How to recover overwritten library?

Im a newbie with Aperture 3. Around 3 a.m. one morning I mistaking overwrote instead of merging my iMac library with my Macbook Pro library.  the Macbook Pro 1200-image library overwrote my 22,000-image iMac database stored on an external drive (and therefore not bu with time machine).  Other than using data recovery software, is there any way to recover the original library structure or at least the master versions?

The options would be:
1)  Restore from a Time Machine backup
2)  Restore from an Aperture Vault
That's pretty much it.  If you have neither of those, consider this a difficult lesson.

  • How to recover a library from a laptop that doesn't work

My laptop died(my brother in law spilled cola on it). I have a new one but I don't know how to recover my library from the old one:( it doesn't start, the GeekSquad told me the motherboard is the problem(too expensive) but I can recover the library if I contact iTunes. So I was thinking to check the forum first, maybe somebody had the same problem.
    Thank you

If you have everything on an iPod, you can get it back from that, too.
I don't know if I would trust the Geek Squad person who said contact itunes.
iTunes store support will not help you with hardware!
Maybe someone else on the squad could get your entire itunes folder off the hard drive.

  • How to recover iTunes library from Time Machine on external drive

    Dear Forumers,
I was not able to solve this problem, hence I decided to open this discussion.
Recently, I clean installed Yosemite so my new Mac is completely empty.
I have my time machine backup on my eternal hard drive and would like to restore only specific things - such as iTunes library.
    How do I do it?
I can locate the iTunes app in the backup file in the external drive but that is just the app - I still don't know how to recover my playlists and songs.
Moreover, I do not have those songs in the Mac - previously they were in a separate organised folder created by me (inside the "music" folder) and iTunes used it.
Does iTunes have a copied library of this all?
Or do I have to copy this folder into Mac and then manually reopen all the songs and sort them into playlists?
    Any advice?
    Thank you in advance.

  • HT201250 How to recover iPhoto Library after format of hard drive?

I've recently reinstalled Lion onto my hard drive but I forgot to backup my iPhoto library. Is there any way of recovering this library? I also have an external hard drive that had Time Machine Backups but that hard drive has since gone through formats as well. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

SOLUTION : iPhoto folder recovered after formatting hard drive by mistake.
I was able for recover my iPhoto library ( intact ) after formatting the hard drive by mistake.
On top of that I formatted it in FAT32 format. My iPhoto folder was huge 100GB with file and movies of all sort of formats. I kept it on a secondary hard drive of 500 GB. one day I was formatting flash drive for somebody which was 500Mb, seems similar to my 500GB and I formatted my hard drive by mistake. I realized the mistake a week after the person called me and said there is nothing in flash disk and I find a single file on my hard drive. Needless to say the earth disappeared underneath me. All my pictures for 10 years , 8000 thousand of them, cherished memories all gone. But was I determined to find them back and I know they are intact somewhere. My biggest fear was that formatting on MS-dos format might have really deleted them , but they were there. and here is how I got them back.
First I tried the Data recuse 3 software. I got the photos back,  but they were all jumbled up. Long numerical file names and original dates were gone. No way I could sort it out back to the way it was before . So my target was to recover the iPhoto folder intact.
    - I bought an external hard drive with 1tb space to retrieve the data.
    - The software which did the miraculous job is called  " STELLAR PHOENIX MAC DATA RECOVERY" .
    - I ran a deep scan all night and came up with many volumes.  volume-1 was the MS dos , volume 2 was a mac system,
    - I tried MS dos volume first and there was nothing on it.
    - I tried the 2 volume with mac system. It got all my files and some other system file.
    - I could see the iPhoto folder and click on that only to recover. After that I went for my doc and other files later.
    - It took hours to retrieve my iPhoto folder intact, The folder size was right and file were there in master folder.
    - I checked in FINDER , opening iPhoto with "show content " and all my picture file were there with original date.
    - BUT when tried opening it in iPhoto , there was nothing. it keep showing the wait icon and nothing shows up. Empty iPhoto.
    - I tired starting iPhoto , holding command -option and tried building and repairing database, nothing worked.
    - Then I got this software " iPhoto library manager" .
    - downloaded, installed it and pointed it towards my iPhoto folder.
    - It asked for space to rebuild a new iPhoto library with existing picture and folder.
I had another external hard drive , I used it to make a rebuild  iPhoto library.
and there I GOT IT. only took three night of pain.
    IMPORTANT:
I never touched my original formatted hard drive. Don't write anything on it until you are sure you have recovered everything. open and see files with your own eyes.
    - I recovered the iPhoto on another hard drive and then built it on another hard drive . Yes its pain in the neck but well worth fixing your stupid mistake of not making a back up in the first place.
I hope this helps all who are looking for iPhoto recovery and their lovely memories.

  • HT1391 how to recover itunes library after reformatting computer - has also wiped my ipod clean when I tried to transfer the music from there

Hi - I have reformatted my computer and want to know how to recover my tunes that were on itunes - I have tried to transfer the tunes from my ipod but it has wiped this clean too - any suggestions welcome!!

*If my kids dock up their iPods to charge them (the iPods still have the music on them) will the computer "sync" the iPod to the now empty library that's on the computer?*
If the iPods are set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent an iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. You should then be able to change your settings: iTunes for Mac - Keyboard Shortcuts
Once the iPods are connected it might be a good idea to change them to manual updating at least until you have your library back in shape. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different, you can get details here:
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iPod - Syncing Music
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

Well the few that you don't have on your iPod may be lost for good. You might be able to write to Apple and convince them to allow you to redownload them if you explain your situation. As to the rest...

  • How to Recover iTunes Library from improper back up

The story: My hard drive was failing. I panicked and backed up using SuperDuper to an external USB drive. Apparently my internal drive was already damaged enough that SuperDuper couldn't complete the back up. It got about 60 of 80 gigs. I ended up having to zero out the internal drive and reinstall all our software. I have pretty much all the critical files back (it's amazing how much useless junk winds up on computers, really) except the iTunes libraries for each user.
When I look at the external drive I can see the iTunes files for each of the four users on the system. The problem is when I attempt to access the files, I get a message that says I'm not authorized.
    I've got two questions:
    1. Is there a way around this authorization thing? Some shareware or something?
    2. If my kids dock up their iPods to charge them (the iPods still have the music on them) will the computer "sync" the iPod to the now empty library that's on the computer?

  • How to recover iphoto library from recovery mode

My macbook pro suddenly went on Utility Disk Mode and can only be accessed through recovery mode. I cannot even view the files. I'm willing to let everything go except for the photos and videos in the iphoto library. I don't know how to access my photos on icloud and when I did, it was just my iphone's photos that are there. is there any way I can view my photos in my locked macintosh hd in other devices or computer?

Thanks for the response BDAqua, I did use Migration Assistant to transfer her data from the SuperDuper backup.  Are you suggesting that I use Migration Assistant to transfer data from the Time Machine backup?  Will that result in duplication?  Sorry, but I've no experience at all with Time Machine backups and don't know whether you can 'pick and choose' what to restore from the Time Machine using Migration Assistant.

  • How to recover iphoto library

This morning i was looking for a way to hide a event in iPhoto library but by mistake i deleted my whole Iphoto library in pictures folder in Finder. Now my iphoto is empty. Is there any way-out to recover those pictures. Even i emptied my trash can. Please help me. Thanks in advance

No. I assumed that if your photos - or any data - is important to you then you would have a back up. It's a basic requirement for anyone using a computer, really.
Now you're into data recovery. You'll need an app like File Salvage. This will scan your Mac and give you a lost of what's recoverable. To actually recover you'll need to purchase the app. You'll also need an external HD to recover to.

  • How to recover damaged library?

I have been using iTunes since 4.8 and now using 5.0. Occasionally my library would corrupt for no reason. I wonder what is the best way to recover the damaged library, so I won't have to reload my iPod shuffle again and again. Thanks!

I had this happen to me yesterday. I had my iTunes 5 running for a few days without a restart. I rebooted the computer, then started iTunes. I have a very large library, and so the "Importing songs" progress box came up and was reimporting all my songs for some reason. When it got to the end, I got the Windows XP there was an error would you like to send a report to Microsoft screen. I said no. Then an iTunes error that said the library was corrupt and backed up to a file called ituneslibrary(damaged).itl. I don't know if that helps. This is the first time this has happened to me. I don't know why iTunes tried to reimport my entire library again. Peculiar.
    Todd.

  • Hard drive crashed - how do I recover my library????

My hard drive on my laptop recently crashed & that's where we had my itunes library. We were able to recover the library from the corrupt hard drive. But now that library sits on another computer (the one we used to recover the data). Now that I have installed my new hard drive on my laptop and have re-installed the ipod and itunes software, how do I get my itunes library back on this laptop to where itunes will recognize that library?
    Thanks for any help!

Hopefully, when you recovered the HD data, you not only captured all the Artist/Album sub-folders, but the 'iTunes Library.itl' database file (located within the 'iTunes' folder). See: What are the iTunes Library files?
If so, then your task is quite easy. Just copy the total 'iTunes' folder & sub-folders back to where they were before the crash.
After you re-instal iTunes, there should be an 'iTunes' folder in the 'My Music' folder under 'My Documents. It should have two small files: the ITL and XML files. These can be overwritten with the full ITL/XML files you have on the backup.
Close iTunes, copy the music folders over, replace the newer ITL file with the complete one, open iTunes. Your Library should be complete and a replica of the one before the crash.
If you do not have the previous 'iTunes Library.itl' file available, then the best you can do is:
File==>Add Folder==>Browse to the main music folder where your files are and add them into the Library.
Post back with any questions, or if the process I outlined does not match what you see.
    Edit:
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least three sets of your music:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer, then create and maintain two external sets.
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl).
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=394618&messageID=1263275

How to recover a deleted library in Revel?

    Hi Roman,
Once a user has deleted files those files cannot be recovered by us.
If you have been uploading or using Revel via the Revel Mac desktop you may be able to recover your originals if you have selected the option Keep Originals. They are stored in a file on the desktop.
