How to recover songs on iPOD

I sync my IPOD with my home desktop, and have loaded lots of songs over last year. My desktop crashed, and have no hope of recovering that..is there a way I can load new MP3 thru iTunes and not lose the songs already on my iPOD?

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • How to recover song that are "lost", itunes can't find them even though I have downloaded and played them before

Does anyone know how to recover songs that itunes has "lost"?
I downloaded them, synced my ipod, songs were added and I was able to play them.
On a recent sync the songs are suddenly "not found" according to itunes.  I can't locate them in the itunes folder, so I have no idea where itune put them.  BTW-this is not the first time itunes stored songs in a random directory......  Since itune can't find them, they were deleted from my ipod

Look, I understand I still need a card attached to the account. The problem is, it won't accept my card because I only have 87 cents in my bank account right now.
If I had known there would be so much trouble with the iTunes card, I would have just put the cash in my bank account in the morning instead of buying an iTunes card (I didn't expect the banks to be open on Thanksgiving of course).
Apple will only accept cards that have a balance. The balance is so small in my account that it won't accept it as a valid card.
I'm going to have to contact Apple anyway to reset the security questions. That's obvious. Your answers were not exactly helpful. You didn't tell me anything I don't already know, but thanks for trying to be helpful.

how to put songs in ipod shuffle

This document describes the ways to put music on a shuffle (and also shows the four shuffle models)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1719
If the shuffle is the current 4th gen (or 3rd gen), here is one convenient way to do it.
Create a new playlist in your iTunes library, and put all of the songs you want on the shuffle on that playlist.  (Or you can use an existing playlist.)  Back on the shuffle's Music screen in iTunes, check the checkbox forSync Music.  Choose the option to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Below that, find that playlist under Playlists and select (checkmark) it.  You can select other items on those lists if desired, including other playlists.
When you click Apply, the songs in your selection(s) sync to the shuffle.  Going forward, to update the shuffle's songs, just update that playlist in your iTunes library (add/remove songs).  The shuffle does not need to be connected.  The next time you connect the shuffle (or click Sync if already connected), iTunes automatically updates the shuffle with the same changes.

If the songs were purchased using your Apple ID on iTunes, simply open iTunes, click on the iTunes Store, then click "Purchased" on the right side and you can re-download from there.
If the songs were not purchased using your Apple ID on iTunes, recover them from your latest computer backup.

My old computer crashed and I had itunes on it. I got a new computer and downloaded itunes on it. I'm going to put the music on this time manually because on the old computer when I would let it sync automatic it would delete some of the songs I already had on there. • Crashed pc, how to recover song lists?

My w2000 pc crashed - if the IPOD is connected on USB when it boots, the PC crashes. This time I could not get the system to recover. I installed a new version of w2000 on the second hard drive. I can see all the files on the original C drive. It looks like I need to reformat the C drive before I can make it boot again. How can I save the itunes library on that drive so that I can use it with a new itunes installation?
    Thanks.

I usually recommend 2 to most people yamipod and podutil. Since you will have a blank iTUnes, Id recommend podutil. You can use there trail version to copy EVERYTHING off the ipod, songs with there ratings and playcounts, and playlist.
    Heres the link http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/software/podutil.php

  • Ipod Mini - how to save songs on Ipod to Library (newly formated computer)

I have just reformatted my computer and unfortunately backed up everything except for my music library.
Is there a way to backup my music that is currently on my ipod to my computer (I'm using a PC with Vista)

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.
    More information is contained here.

Some of these methods may not work with Vista.
