I guess in the event of lost archive logs during db recovery, you have to open RESETLOGS and say goodbye to some of the data.

How to recover Contacts after MobileMe to iCloud upgrade?

I assume that the regular backups of the contacts and calendar only work on a Mac
No, you can backup contacts and calendars on a Windows PC. There are many backup options for PCs, but you would've had to set one up. Don't you backup any of the data on your PC?
Your recommendation is that I restroe my entire iPhone from the last iTunes backup to recover these files?
That's really your only option with no other backups available. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4946
There's no guarantee that the iTunes Backup will include all your contacts, as noted in the support article above, you're supposed to maintain backups of the contacts in the contact manager you sync with.

  • How can I identify and remove duplicate file (audio & photo)

How can I identify and remove duplicate file (audio & photo)?  I have quite a few libraries created as backup files.

    Terence,
Yes, the duplicates appear in the iPhoto window. I have folders with same name occuring two or even three times sometimes with exactly the same set of photos (ie photos with the same ID) and sometimes with a limited set of photos. Other  folders appear only once.
I normally take my MacBook with me if I'm shooting a lot of photos, such as on holiday, and then want to transfer them to my iMac when i get home. Other times I transfer the camera's memory stick directly to my iMac.
I have great difficulty transferring the photos from my MacBook to my iMac. I don't want to store my photos on my iDisk due to the length of time it takes to upload them.
    Thanks again.

  • How to recover photos after restoring iPod touch?

Yesterday, there was an update for the iOS 6, I believe. When I pressed the update button, a message popped up saying that there was a problem with my iPod touch 4G and that I need to restore it. I had absolutely no idea why that message would pop up in the first place because my iPod was working just fine. But I couldn't update my iPod to the newest version if I didn't do what iTunes says... so I was about to restore my iPod, but then I was worried that all of my photos would disappear. So I decided to update my iOS later so that I could transfer all my files on to my computer. I then unplugged my iPod, and tried to turn it on but the home screen wouldn't pop - no matter what I did, all the screen showed was an itunes icon on top with a USB plug-in cord at the bottom. So I had no choice but to restore my iPod. The thing is, once I restored my iPod and all, my photos were all gone and I did not use iCloud as a back-up since a few months ago. All of my recent photos are now gone and I have no idea how to recover them. I've tried programs that aim to recover deleted photos, but they didn't work.
Is there a way to recover photos after restoring the iPod Touch?

    Hello,
It is very important to backup your device to the computer before updating or restoring.
You can restore your device to a previous backup, all the photos that were there when you made the backup should return with it, but I'm afraid that any photos taken or saved after the last backup are unrecoverable.
    I hope this helps.

  • How do I find and remove hidden files

For some reason, after the recent install of SL my 1TB drive is extremely bloated. I have deleted or moved just about everything possible from the disk (excluding system files and applications) and it still shows that I only have 94.08 GB of space available.
Is there a good piece of software out there that will help me to find out if there are several hidden files and remove what is unnecessary?

Wow ... that was enlightening. I discovered that somehow there is a hidden folder on the 1TB drive entitled "volumes" and within that folder is a subfolder entitled "Mega Drive" (my self-titled name for the 1TB boot drive), which is an exact duplicate of my previous hard drive.
A little more about how I got here. I had to computer in to the Apple Store, after upgrading to SL, for what I initially though was a hardware issue. The Genius felt it was software, did an erase and install. When I got the macing back I tried to us Migration Assistant to copy files from my Time Machine drive, it took all night so I wasn't awake when it finished. I suspect that is where this folder came from, as the next day I could not find the information on my computer, so I started manually moving the files from that drive.
The bottom line is this ... is it safe to remove trash this entire folder?

  • HOW TO RECOVER A LOST FOLDER OR FILES?

I have had severe problems with my Macbook lately and I'm scared I have lost a very important folder and some files. How can I find them or recover them completely? I have searched the trash, spotlight, and finder and its missing???! please help thanks!

It can occur that some files appear to have been lost or corrupted. This can be caused due to several reasons. For instance, you could have ejected a removable device or accidentally deleted a folder that contained hidden files. No matter the reason, there is no reason to panic. Here is what to do to recover your files:
Launch MacHider and click Restore Files in the main toolbar.
Select the folder where the hidden files were originally located and click Open in the window that appears.
The file will be found and shown in the main list so that you can select to unhide it using the slider in the Inspector panel.

There is a tool that can recover logical problems in the VHD structure?

There is a CHKDSK for VHD files?
How to "rebuild" a corrupetd VHD file? How to analyze logical structure of a offline VHD file?

I also would like to suggest another application which I have used recently for doing VHD recovery. Last, I lost almost everything on my lappy due to hard drive crash
issue. I backup my data in .vhd file but due to somehow the backup file unable to show me any data. Finally, I tried Hyper-V data recovery tool that had been recommended by my friend. The tool have easy-to-operate GUI techniques so that even a novice use can
also run this application for repairing VHD file corruption or data inaccessible problem without any hassle. It also recovered those files which I had deleted earlier.
I got this superb tool over here:

  • How to Recover Mailboxes After Mail.app Crashed?

    Hi,
The battery in my MacBook Pro crashed my MBP: when it dipped to 25%, the MBP just shut off. In the process, Mail.app's preferences got corrupted, so that when I plugged the MBP in and restarted, Mail crashed at launch. I selected to re-launch it, which presumably makes the OS ditch the preference file, and indeed Mail.app was up and running - but only with my MobilMe IMAP account.
Following an earlier thread on this forum, <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7922931>, I recreated another IMAP account, and it sync'ed with the server.... but did not use the earlier files!
To be clear: looking at things from within Mail.app, everything seems to be in order at first glance: both accounts are up and running, and the most recent e-mail I can remember is there, in both accounts. Therein lies the rub, however: I've kept about 7 years worth of e-mails, and there's no telling (at least not quickly) what's not there (viewing things from within Mail.app).
So, I inspected ~/Library/Mail/ (all folder-names will refer to the ones within this one), and see that a brand new folder "IMAP-myname@server" got created for my second account, and this is what Mail.app is now using. Another detail (and that's where the devil is, usually): Originally, my 2nd account had the incoming mail server specified as "servername.domain", where "servername" was the actual name of the computer. Thus, Mail.app filed that into stuff the folder "[email protected]". Sometime in the past, the alias "mail.domain" was the recommended replacement, and I know I have so changed Mail.app's preferences, but the "[email protected]" folder was not renamed.
By the same token, when I now re-created my 2nd account, I specified the server as "mail.domain", which caused Mail.app to create a brand new "[email protected]" folder.
And... my ~/Library/Mail/ folder now contains two folders,
     1. (the old one) "[email protected]"
     2. (the new one) "[email protected]"
Is there any way to merge these? Is there any need to do so?
Presumably, whatever I downloaded to my MBP is in the "Mailboxes" folder and not in these? However, there are differences: for example, the "INBOX.imapbox/Messages" folder contains 121 "nnn.emlx" files within the new account folder structure, but 164 such files within the old account folder structure.
Also, I have two other, POP accounts, and I'm now not sure what I should do about those.
Finally, I do have Time-Machine backups, and this evening I'll be able restore everything to the status as of 6:00 am this morning, but that would delete the changes that occur as I am using Mail.app during the day.
    Any insights? suggestions?
    Thanks, Tristan

    Hi, Ernie:
Um, yes, there was a "sent" mailbox, a "drafts" mailbox, a "junk" mailbox... Those migrated into the "on my Mac" section, under the name "Delivered", "Drafts (DotMac)" and "Junk (DotMac)" and similarly for the other IMAP account.
But, my concern is with the multiple contents in the ~/Library/Mail/ folder, as I detailed in the original post. At some point, when I have the time, I'll try to disentangle the difference in the contents, and see if those things are vital or some long-forgotten useless, "lint in the bottom of the drawers".
Until then, the newly-set up IMAP accounts work fine.
As for the POP3 accounts, I'd think that only about a week's worth of messages are still on the server, and the rest is in the "on my Mac" section, which does not seem to be affected. So, except for mucking up the last week's worth of e-mails on the POP3 accounts, I should be fine to just recreate them.
I suppose, after a while, when all's running well, I can safely remove the "old" content in the !/Library/Mail/ folder, pertaining to the "old" accounts, and which is not being accessed any more?
    Cheers, Tristan

  • How to recover firefox after pressing reset button?

I have pressed "reset Firefox" button. After this, I lost my bank certificate. How can I recover it?

If you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some of your data (bookmarks, passwords, cookies, form data) is automatically imported and your current profile will be moved to the desktop (Old Firefox Data).
It is possible to recover more data from the old profile, but be cautious to avoid carrying over the problem.
You can copy the cer8.db file from the Old Firefox Data folder on the desktop to the current Firefox profile folder.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • 7.2 upgrade: how to recover corrupted iTune library index file from backup?

    Hi folks,
I upgraded to iTunes 7.2 and my library file (the xml one)
    got corrupted...
My >40 GB of mysic seem to be on the safe side fortunately,
same for a half way recent backup of the file
    iTunes Music Library.xml.
Both sit on an external hard drive, while the corrupted files
are on the main disk. Sounds not to bad, compared to what I read from others!
    Questions:
    1) How can I use my backuped XML index file to recover my playlists etc in iTunes? Unfortunately I only backuped this single index file, i.e. the "Music"
one, yet not the other iTunes database file.
    2) Then, I had still made some modifications (mostly MP3 file tags)
after the backup of the index file. I realized that while looking on
the time stamps of the directories that contain my actual music.
Do I need to do something to make these modifications visible
    in the recovered iTunes??
Thanks for any useful hints in advance!!

I solved my problem through a minor variation of this recipe:

Thanks very much for your help guys. I appreciate it. unfortunately none of these commands worked for me. I kept getting error on clearing logs that redo log is needed to perform recovery so it can't be cleared. So I ended up restoring from earlier snapshot of my db volume. Database is now open.
Thanks again for your input. And now, as a follow-up, at a minimum you should make sure that all redo log groups have at least 3 members. Then, if you lose a single redo log file, all you have to do is shutdown the db and copy one of the good members (of the same group as the lost member) over the lost member.
And as an additional follow-up, if you value your data you will run in archivelog mode and take regular backups of the database and archivelogs. If you fail to do this you are saying that your data is not worth saving.

  • How to recover photos after restore without backup?

    Hello
Basically, a couple weeks ago my iPod 4th gen died.
I went out to buy a new charger. This charger worked for a while, but then stopped.
Every time I plugged it in, it would show me the screen that indicates
that I have to connect my iPod to iTunes.
So, I bought a new charger and used it to connect to iTunes,
only to find out that my iPod was in Recovery Mode!
The only option was to restore it. I tried to back it up, however the options
were all greyed out. A pop-up indicated that I could get my contacts and what not
back after the restore, so I did it.
After the restore, my iPod went back to the factory settings.
I was happy, thinking that there was a backup of all my photos saved to my computer.
Yet when I check iTunes, I could not restore the backup!
I am honestly so devastated. I could care less about the contacts and apps, but I had
pictures of my younger cousins and family collected for over 4 years.
I'd really love to get these back. I tried using those recovery programs, but nothing
worked for me! I also tried to get a back up from an older computer I used, but it said that I'd
never done a back up on that computer.
This whole situation has upset me, I'm not sure of what to do now.
I just really want those photos back.
Thank you for reading, sorry that this is so long.
Any solutions? (iPod 4th gen, iOS 6.1.6)
