How to recover the mac pro

how to  recover the mac pro and how to use time machine,   I don't know why that my time machine logo is always gray.

Press the command and r keys when turning on your Macbook.  Do not release those keys until you see the apple logo...
Disk Utility will pop up.....Your choices are to reinstall, you will not lose anything....
if however, you decide to format/erase your drive, then reinstall, you will lose everything...
suggestion - back everything up and do a clean install.
good luck

  • How noisy is the Mac Pro?

How noisy is the Mac Pro - say compared to an iMac?

    Hello Pagemakers2,
First,I doubt you'll get a definitive answer to this kind of question because there's significant variability in the "intensity of use" among Mac Pro owners. I mean of course, some users need to run apps and process file types which naturally require more cooling of hard-running cpus and that will cause more fan noise.
I'm almost embarrassed to admit: the most "intense" task my Mac Pro handles (video encoding) uses only about 65% of processing capacity. So... I never hear the fans at all, the Mac Pro does not even put out "warm air" from the exhaust ports. I work in a quiet environment (home) where, sometimes, I have to play music on iTunes or at least turn on the tv in the next room - just to have a little background noise. Meanwhile, the fan in my eMac can be heard when I wake it from sleep - but never unpleasantly.
I'm pretty sure most users will agree: when idling (surfing the web, even running filters on big digital files with Photoshop™) the Mac Pro is pretty quiet.
Oh, another factor to consider is: Whether or not you run heavy apps with a heavy work load "continuously." I mean for example: running those video conversions may take a few minutes on the Mac Pro (Intel). But I may run one file to burn to DVD on any given day. (On average, less than once a day.)
Burning: the original Sony OPTIARC drive which came factory installed made "moderate noise" (for about 2-3 minutes of burn time) but the noise was "annoying." I replaced that with (eventually) two Samsung units: these both make audible noise, but it seems less and certainly doesn't annoy me like the Sony unit did.
Just to be clear: I didn't replace the Sony drive due to noise, I did so because that model didn't (1) handle DVD-DL and (2) I wanted DVD drives which provide the Lightscribe disk labeling software. The "more pleasant sound" was a bonus.

  • How fast does the mac pro run xp with 3d apps

Hi all am planing to upgrade to a mac pro, but am not sure how it will run xp and some animations softwares on the xp side,
i was just wondering if any one knows the speed and fast the mac pro can render with 3d max mental ray. and the problems it will encounter when running xp.

If your plan is to run XP with 3D, why not BYO and go after an Intel X58 Core i7.
Otherwise, keep your eye on Apple Specials (ref'd) units.

  • How loud is the Mac Pro under heavy load?

    Greetings to all.
I've got a Quad that currently likes to rev up it's fans when I'm doing 4 core calculations (rendering). It gets loud enough that it usually drones out anything not in my immediate area of my desk in my office. Just slightly quieter then the noise it throws off when you run Apple Hardware Test (which has no thermal management, so everything runs at full blast).
I'm fine with a loud computer, the Quad's still quieter then some of my PC's. But I would like to know- everyone is clamering about the Mac Pro's being quieter then the Quad.
Is this under load, or just idling?
Are the Mac Pro's as loud as the Quad when loaded down?
    -S'Captain

I have a dual 2.0 GHz Rev. A G5 and now am using a MP 3.0 GHz. The G5 is louder at idle than the MP is at full throttle. I decided to see how loud it would get but maxing out all 4 cores overnight. I came into the room the next day and was bummed it had crashed because it sounded like it had shut off but I moved the mouse and to my delight the thing was still churning away at 400%. It is very very quiet and I have slowly gotten used to the fact that it is nearly impossible to tell if it is asleep or awake. The G5's seem to have a very large delta with regard to fan noise, not so bad at idle and kinda loud when fully loaded. The MP's seem to go from nearly silent to barely audible.
Someone mentioned above that the machine has only passive heat-sinks on the CPUs which is true but misleading because each heat-sink has a dedicated fan right in-front of it in the case. So far I have added 4x1GB of non-Apple thermal spec RAM, i.e. no heat-sinks - just spreaders, and the fans have not spun any louder. Two of the sticks are Kingston and two are Crucials which were the wrong types due to an error by them and didn't have the Apple-style sinks on em. The Kingstons have run reliably for over a week with me stressing them almost every night and I have encountered a lone ECC error which was corrected. I think in cooler environments you may be OK with regular FB-DIMMS but in a hotter environment you may have issues, I keep it pretty cool where the MP lives.

  • How Warm Are The Mac Pros?

I've got a Quad G5 and this is my primary complaint about the machine... how the room where I've got it is quite noticeably warmer than even the immediate hallway...

I think i noticed this when I first turned on my Mac Pro. I think it has something to do with the power supply. I dont' know what the noise is though. I don't hear it anymore, but that is probably because I only hear my APC UPS click on when the Mac Pro turns on / wakes up.

  • How loud is the Mac Pro?

I need a very quiet PC. I know the Mac Pro is quieter than its G5 predecessor, but I have never owned a Power Mac, so the comparison doesn't mean much to me. I'm most concerned about fan noise. Is the Mac Pro audible from a few feet away? Does it get louder under load?
P.S. I plan to get the fanless 7300 video card, and I will replace the stock hard drive with one I have specifically chosen for nearly silent operation.

  • How big is the Mac Pro PSU

It cant' be 900w+ can it? I tried looking around but didn't see anything.

    http://www.macworld.com/article/52326/2006/08/xeon.html
    It says about 980 watt.
I think 300 watts are dedicated for the PCI slots, the rest are for other components.

hmmm...how i hate myself for being such a careless person...
    PLEASE HELP ME...
    Thank you in advance.

How exactly did you shut down your laptop? Not a hard restart (holding down the power button), I hope... if that's the case, then it is extremely unlikely the file is still intact on your computer. If it is, it would be an image on your RAM, and it is time-and-resource-intensive to recover it if it is even there. RAM memory is disposable and always being written over. Sorry dude...
If it wasn't a hard restart, Keynote should have made a backup, unless you 'Force Close'd it.
It really all depends on how your mac was shut down.

  • I have a long-existing iPhone 4s with one apple id and started a job where I received a macbook with another apple id. how do i get my phone to sync with the Mac Pro and secondly how do i get my music on there?

No not bothered about sycing apps etc it is all about calendars and maybe notes. IN terms of how its done I just want it the easiest way and preferably so that if an entry is made on one calendar then it populates the other.
Thgius is beacuse I have my work diary on outlok, which I then link with my ical. I want to make sure that information is then shared with her.

  • How long should the Mac Book pro hold its charge???

How long should the Mac Book pro hold a  battery charge??

For a single use or how long will the battery last until it needs to be replaced?  For single use, it depends on what you are doing when using you mac.  I find that when using mine I get about 6-6 1/2 hours just using it to browse the internet before I need to recharge it.  If it is one of the newer Macbook Pros that claim to have a 7 hour battery life, It can last up to 5 years.  See this article on notebook batteries to get the most out of your battery: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html.  Hope this helps

The Mac Pro - the desktop computer - does not support Airdrop, if that's what you mean.

  • How diagnose the extra SATA ports on the Mac Pro (early 2008) logic board?

I have had two SSDs in an OWC multi-mount in the second optical bay, one for Lion and one for Photoshop scratch. However, I recently began having intermittent boot problems. Sometimes there wouldn't be an Apple symbol upon boot/reboot, yet sometimes there would and the computer would boot. I have not experienced any crashes, kernel panics or such.
I thought the Lion SSD was faulty so installed Mountain Lion on the scratch drive, a Mercury Electra 3G which I have recently received as a replacement from OWC due to a previously faulty SSD. However, immediately there were boot problems from that SSD.
I have a feeling there is something wrong with the two extra SATA ports on the logic board. I am now booted off the Lion SSD placed in an external USB enclosure, which works but is a bit slower (I will get a bracket to install that SSD in the ordinary internal bays).
My question is how I can diagnose the logic board generally and specifically the extra SATA ports. I have Tech Tool Pro 6. I also thought I had AHT but on the Leopard DVD 1, which came with the Mac Pro (10.5.2) and on which AHT is supposed to be there is no trace of AHT. Odd. Booting from that DVD will only bring up the Leopard installer.
Btw I do think the Electra is broken because I am unable to boot ML from it in the USB enclosure.
Grateful for any ideas how to check my logic board.
    Cheers
    /p

If you could move the drives easily to another location then you could test the drives and also - make backup images! just to be safe. SSDs and their firmware and problems are almost all too common, even this last June a large issue with SandForce which OWC uses in some/most of theirs, and I get the feeling they are usually behind in testing and sending out firmware updates.
Corsair, Crucial and Intel have all had issues since it surfaced in May.
Diagnosing a motherboard with Apple Service Diagnostic CD is one thing. Swapping out SATA cables though no. WD Lifeguard does check communication to an SATA device drive and can - but you need to see the device in Windows or their boot CD (linux I imagine). Quite good utility though maybe not for an SSD.
