How to recreate iPhoto from an external HD back up

Hi all -
I have a clean back up of my iPhoto '06 libraries on my LaCie external HD, which is a good thing, because iPhoto on my MacBook Pro, OS X 10.5.2 was corrupted (I wrote about this previously, I made the mistake of editing one of my folders in the Finder.)
So now I am ready to get rid of the corrupted version and re-install the back up. Exactly how do I do this?
One more detail: I have iPhoto Buddy installed and I actually have two iPhoto libraries - "Yearbook Library" and "iPhoto Library."
Do I have to reinstall both Libraries or can I just do one?
If I decide to reinstall both, just to be safe, how exactly would I do it?
Thanks!
FranArt

FranArt:
If you have any new photos in the damaged library that are not in the backup don't delete the damaged one. Open it and drag the Originals folder into the open iPhoto window after you've opened the backup copy. You will be given an option to import or not import duplicate photos. Delcline importing originals and click on the Apply to all checkbox. iPhoto will go thru all of the photos in the old library and import just those that are not in the backup copy.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I've moved my entire iPhoto library to an external hard drive and now can't remember how to open up iPhoto from that drive.

depress and hold the option key, launch iPhoto and use the resulting select library window to point to the new location - be sure to fully test the iPhoto library in the new location before deleting the old library and be sure tha tyour backup software is backing up the external drive

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
how is the EHD where the library is located formatted?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Can i run i tunes/iphoto from an external hard drive?

does any one know if i can run ituens/iphoto from an external hard drive and if so how do i do it?

Drag the libraries to it, launch each application with the Option key held down, and point them there. The iPhoto library needs to be stored on a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended.

  • How do I boot from an external CD drive?

On a different thread, I've been reporting problems with my internal HD.
When I went to Disk Utility and ran Verify Disk on the HD, I got the error back telling me that the Mac HD needs repairing. Now, to run the repair facility, I seem to have to reboot from the OS X CD rather than the Mac HD.
Trouble is, my internal optical drive failed some time ago (seems to be a known fault with iMacs that have the MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846 optical drive) and I've been using an external optical drive connected via firewire with no problems...until now. When I went to reboot from the CD (holding the C button down whilst selecting Reboot), my Mac just booted again from the internal HD.
How do I reboot from an external CD?
If I can do this, I can run the disk repair utility and hopefully all will then be well...
(Please spell out any suggestions for me as I am really quite new to all this stuff - Thanks!)

    Hi Chris.
What is the version of the OS on the computer and what is the version of the OS Disc that you have inserted?
Make sure you have inserted the same version of the OS disc that is currently running on the computer.
For Example. If there is 10.5.x running on your computer, you have to insert 10.5 Disc and boot to it.

  • How do I boot from an external drive?

I've just Carbon Cloned my 60GB drive to a firewire external drive. I'm about to replace the 60GB with a 160GB drive and the CCC instructions say boot from the external drive I'd just created once the new disk is installed. Then CCC the cloned drive back to the new hard drive.
So, how do I boot from an external drive? Do I have load anything to the new drive? Will the macbook detect the external drive and boot from that? Or what??????
    Thanks
    Dick

Thanks DWB. Being the rash impetuous guy I am I didn't wait for replies and just switched on the macbook after installing the new disk (which was so easy it was unbelievable - had to go and buy a a little torx bit though) to see what would happen.
Blow me down with a feather if it didn't just boot off the external drive all by itself :-O It did come up with the disk was unverified and I could see it in FINDER and I was prseented with a screen to ERASE/RESTORE etc.
When I went to CCC the external drive back to the new hard drive it didn't give show me the new hard drive so I guessed I'd have to do something to format (?) the hard drive.
I don't know if I did the right thing but I went to disk utilities and chose ERASE in the vague hope it would maybe format the disk in some way.
Seems to work now and the CCC replaced the system perfectly as far as I can see.
Basically very impressive all round. Piece of proverbial to replace the disk and CCC made life so easy.
    Thanks again.
    Cheers

How do I Retrieve imovie projects from and external drive back into my mac internal drive?
    Thank You

Every working drive, Internal or External, should produce an Icon on your Desktop. If you cannot see those, click on the Desktop (to get Finder) and choose Preferences off the Finder Menu. The general pane has checkboxes for "Show these items on the Desktop:"
Double click the Icon for your External Drive to open it. Open the folders on it until you find the Items you want to copy. Drag them to the Icon of your Internal Drive, or open the folder where you want them to land and drop them in there.
A drive that does not appear on the desktop after you have asked it to may be damaged. But it would be smart to do a Restart to see if it is recognized again at next Startup.

How to save iPhoto folders to external disk?

    You are not clear

are you talking aobt events by any chance? What do you want to do?
To move the photos form events to an external drive select them and export - see the user tip on exporting for details on the options available
to run iPhoto with your library on an EHD
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Trying to install all my MP3s from new external drive back into iTunes

    Hi,
I'm hoping anyone can help me out here...
I had a major PC upset and have had to rebuild it from scratch (with the help of Dell Tech Support!).
I've now downloaded and installed latest version of iTunes and I'm trying to reload all of my (thankfully) saved MP3s, still in their relevant folders etc, from my external HD back into iTunes.
Despite all attempts, it isn't happening!
Short of having to 'open with' (Tunes) each and every single file, can anyone help with how I can do this?
Thanks in advance for all help offered!
