How to "redo" iCal accounts

Seems like after upgrading to 10.5.3, I've started experiencing many different issues, several of which I have been following on these posts. I'm wondering if anyone knows a simple way to delete all iCal accounts to start from scratch (without having to reinstall OSX or anything like that). I'm at the point with my iCal Server situation that I'd like to just nuke the entire directory of calendars and have all my users start over again and create new calendars.
It's really quite frustrating, but hey, sometimes you have to clear the board and get a fresh start right?
Appreciate any help!

Kia ora Fireball08,
I will describe what we had, and then what we did.
We needed a calander at work, we are dentists and needed a simple computerised appointment book. I bought Leopard server for that and we fired it up and away we went.
I installed server as the basic dumby setup, I didn't turn on any additional services other than ical, filesharing and ichat. It seemed to go OK running on a G4 dually tower and serving to one G4 macmini (the receptionist) and another G4 tower, and I use a printed daysheet, but had my calendar client was on my macbook.
We had 2 main calendars (the two dentists) and the receptionist, who was a delegat of both. Reception made all the appointments and had R/W access to the two calendars.
I did not turn on DNS (no one said at that stage I had too!) and we did not use kerebos.
To get the calendars working I had to put in the ip address of the server etc as we kept getting the cant find principals error when configuring the icals. The only problem was slow updating and a peculiar situation where the receptionists calendar had all the appts OK but my macbook had lots of gaps. So somehow her macmini was the only complete calendar.
Any way, this was all to get it ready for replacing the reception macmini with two intelmini's and installing server on a 2.66 ghz imac.
I was running out of time and had our local mac-dealer I.T. man install Leopard server but he could not get the ical part going, he configured DNS and all the other services but could not get the group webcalendar going even after installing 10.5.3. He got busy doing things that worked (far more satisfying I'm sure) so, I got the imac back and then with the OSX server book (Mac os x server essentials second edition) I tried to get it going and I did (I think! -- you can never be too sure!!).
In our situation it was due to DNS and iCal to begin with. When you do the dumby setup and name you server it gets called whateveryouwant.com. We gave ours a .com suffix. The computer was called, lets say fishbreath (the name of the drive/machine). The fully qualified domain name would be servername.com, in this case whateveryouwant.com.
This is where it seemed to go all weird, the nameserver host name was servername.suffix but according to the book, it should be computername.servername.suffix, so in our case it would be fishbreath.whateveryouwant.com. We set it so.
In serveradmin the iCal service/settings however had the ical server name as whateveryouwant.com only. I gave it the full name, fishbreath.whateveryouwant.com, I also changed the authentication to Any Method and restarted ical and away it went. In workgroup manager I also made sure each user was pointed to the iCal server in user/advanced, enable calendaring selecting the correctly named ical server, now fishbreath.whateveryouwant.com (previously just whateveryouwant.com)
By now our setup was 3 dentists (the main calendars) with 2 receptionists and a back office emac as delegates of the other three (still served off the G4 dualy) and about 6000 events, increasing by about 70 per day. Two of the dentists clients had complete calendars, and one receptionists had all three as did the back office, but my calendar on my macbook had holes in it and the other receptionist was incomplete.
We then went live with the imac installation. Having re-populated the new server with all the accounts, by hand there are only 9 user accounts, and re-populated the calendars with a ical backup from the complete receptionists account. It seemed to be OK but one receptionist computer would not refresh and we were getting the cog of pathetic failure. I could get things going by restarting iCal but it would grind to a halt 2 hours later, to the minute.
The error logs for DNS and iCal showed authentication errors. The authentication was set to any, but some clients were trying to use Kerebos, and the error was due to a certificate error or something.
I first exported the client calendars on the two complete dentists local machines and my one on the back office machine.
And following advice from the boards I opened directory(the application, not the utility) on each client selected preferences and in preferences selected password (some were set on Kerebos). Then deleted the ical accounts, on the user clients (not the server), in ical preferences and re-created them. And made sure network prefs had the ip of our server dns and the search domain name had the domain name of our server.
I then reimported the exported calendars back into the accounts and its been humming along since then. The ical log still has lots of errors but it works well, updates all clients and delegates when changes are made instantly, so we are happy. Our wiki and group web calendar is going now as well.
So to reiterate for us it was DNS, then iCal, then Utility Ap, then delete ical account on client and re-create it. I don't think I've forgotten anything, but I will check the settings tomorrow at work, Late Sunday night here, you can't expect too much!!
regards

  • Is there a limit to how large an iCal account can be?

I have a client with very large calendar sets, some of them span several years.  I am getting all sorts of weird issues with them dropping their connection to the calendar server in OS X Server, latest updates etc...If I remote in and toggle Calendar services on/off it seems to come back for a time then drops again...I am pretty lost at this point..I thought upgrading from the the Snow Leopard server would resolve this issue but it persists.
    Thoughts anyone?

I have hosted calendars with over 2,000 events.  No problem.
I suspect that your calendar data may be corrupt in some way.
Use iCal to export that calendar to a text file.
Look through the text file and make sure everything you expect is there.
Create a new calendar and import the events into it.
Subscribe your user(s) to the new calendar.
    Delete the old calendar.

  • ICal and Kerio - not updating completely how to uninstall ical prefs?

I use iCal to connect to Kerio and view multiple user accounts at once. Recently iCal started going off-line a lot and now many items just won't sync. I have tried to remove the Kerio account and reconfigure, but it does not work. I thought if I can remove all iCal prefs to reset back to like new, then reconnect with Kerio it might fix. Any idea how to get iCal back to like new?

hi sibley, the radicale way to put iCal to scratch state is:
    - Quit iCal
    - in the user concerned Home/Library/Application Support/ get reed of the the iCal folder
    - restart iCal
    it's done...

  • How to using ical with two separate iphones

    hello
trying to understand and learn how to use Ical with 2 different Iphones, using Icloud.

To sync iCal across computers, the calendar needs to be published to a server. This can be a local server that you can set up, or it can be something like google or microsoft exchange or apple's mobile me. The best bet may be to wait until fall and see what iCloud offers!
Sharing your screen can be accomplished a few different ways. You can have two iChat accounts set up, and have one logged in on each computer, and then use iChat's screen share feature. The other way is to go to System Preferences, Sharing, and then check the box next to Screen Sharing. You may have to adjust some of the settings in there, but give that a shot.

  • How to make iCal Server events viewable on the web calendar?

    Hi,
I can create, edit and view events on the web calendar.
I can create, edit and view my own events via iCal.
How can I set it up so we can see all the calendars from our group on the web calendar? It's empty now other than what's entered via the web calendar.
Is there really no integration between the two?

I too thought web group calendar was subscribe only in iCal until I ran across the procedure at
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080410162942908
in the 4th comment down by protean. With a couple of additions I was able to post an event to the web group calendar and have an update on the web post back to the iCal calendar. My additions were needed to get the results as posted in the comment:
    1) make sure Enable Calendaring is selected for all group members,
    2) refresh iCal to ensure all group members are visible in the Personal Server Calendar Address Pane before adding the group calendar account,
    3) add all members in step 3 of the procedure including yourself, however, if the owner of the group (e.g. diradmin) is not a member then don't add it,
    4) prior to step 6 of the procedure you can verify the group is visible as in step 8 in the Personal Server Calendar delegation before deleting the group account; if not visible then you don't have to start from scratch, just work with the group account from step 1,
    5) the group calendar shows up in the left column list of calendars under Delegates calendars.
So I got this to work.
Then I setup a location in Directory.app with Delegates as the group. It shows up in iCal under Delegates calendar with the error notice
'Error While Refreshing Access to account "location title" is not permitted.'
So there is no calendar available for the location in iCal. The personal iCal account shows the Delegation of location and the Show checkbox is selected. The group is allowed to select the location on the web calendar and in the server iCal calendar. But the location doesn't indicate conflicts in the availability pane. Can someone tell me what might be missing?

  • Web Based Wiki Calendar does not match iCal Account Calendars

+Accidentally posted this in the 10.5 Server section, hopefully there's not a problem posting it here as well, but since I'm on 10.6.7 Snow Leopard Server I thought this section might have an answer:+
Having a weird issue with a Wiki Calendar that I want to share throughout the office. I created a group and then created a Wiki for it using the Server Preferences, then enabled the Calendar in the Wiki Preferences. This works fine, calendar shows up when logged into the wiki.
Next I wanted to have it accessible from both the Web for the few PC users we have and from iCal for our Mac users. I added the Wiki calendar with the following settings in iCal:
    Account type: CalDAV
User name: shortname (of a group member)
    Password: (password of group member)
    Server address: server.mydomain.com/principals/wikis/groupshortname
The calendar gets added fine in iCal with one problem, it is not the same calendar that is on the wiki if you log in via a browser. Events added in iCal do not show up on the wiki's events list and if I add a calendar or change the name it is not reflected on the wiki page either.
The Server Path in iCal preferences shows:
    /principals/_uids_/wiki-groupshortname/
Events that I add to the calendar will show up to everyone that has the account added in iCal, just not on the wiki page. Wondering if anyone else has come across this and knows how to fix it. Thanks.

What I did is checking if one of the server updates causes the problem:
    - Clean installation of 10.6.3
    - New and empty folders for collaboration and calendar
    - Checking user calendar was fine - with the user wikis and calendar is no problem at all.
    Wikis:
    - New test-wiki and new calendar entry was as it should (in the calendar folder under the real wiki-name folder - not 465465464654645something)
    - Connecting with iPhone worked calender are updating
    - Connecting with iCal from OSX failed (could not find UID__4565465436135thing)
    - Updating the server with 10.6.6 combo
    - second test-wiki and new calendar entry was as it should (in the calendar folder under the real wiki-name folder - not 465465464654645something)
    - Connecting with iPhone worked calender are updating
    - Connecting with iCal from OSX ok and updating
    - I copied two of my production wikis in the collaboration folder and the calendar are updating with iCal and iPhone
    - Updating the server with 10.6.7 combo
Without loosing a second the server is making new calendars and renames the Websites Name of the calender with 4653134604645065406something.
    - But only with the migrated wikis from 10.5 not with the new test wikis
I will now make another installation and update to 10.6.6 only and try to reconfigurate the server.

  • How to send ical invites from another email address than the iCloud address

    Hi everyone,
I have set up my calendars in ical to work with icloud and everything is going great.
The problem i have is that when i invite someone to a meeting or reply to a meeting invite the invitation is send from my iCloud email address. Instead i want the invitation or reply to be send my business email account.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to select which account the invtiations are sent from?
    Thanks

    1. I didn't replace my [email protected] login with my [email protected] email. I only changed my email information to my [email protected] email. I still login with [email protected]
    2. The me card in both my local address book and the addressbook on iCloud only contains my [email protected] email.
From what I've read in other threads, changing the apple id email means deleting my iCloud account and starting over with a new login email. Apple officially says that it's not possible. But others seem to have succeed with it.
Do you know of any other solution?

  • Cannot add new mail Account or iCal account

When I try to add a new Mail account (press " + " on the Mail -> Preferences -> Account tab) it temporarily darkens but nothing happens. Pressing "+" in iCal -> Preferences -> Accounts does not have an effect either.
Unlike in the case of other posters neither Mail nor iCal crashes. It just simply does not respond. At present I have two Mail accounts (created in an earlier version, probably Tiger) and no iCal account.
So far I have tried the following:
    1) Press "Add account ..." in the File menue instead of pressing the "+" button. Result: No effect.
    2) Use disk utility to repair permissions. Result: No effect.
    3) Quit Mail; Move ~/Library/Mail, ~/Library/Mail Downloads, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist to the Desktop; Restart the Computer; Open Mail. Result: New Mail folders are created in ~/Library, a new com.apple.mail.plist is created. My .me account information is automatically recognized but I still cannot create another account, even not my second account that worked before.
    4) Create a new user. Result: For the new user I can create at least 3 Mail accounts.
Obviously there is something wrong with my current user account, though I am not aware of any other symptoms. Any ideas how this can be repaired?

Try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. This will not affect your data. The phone will reboot.

  • How to keep ical alarms displayed after restarting

I notice that my iCal alarms disappear after quitting iCal or restarting my computer. For example "Call Doctor" shows up today at 8 am when I start work. I shut down for a meeting. I restart and the alarm message is gone. The event is still there. But I might forget to call unless I see the alarm again. I remember Microsoft Entourage did this and I found it very helpful. Is there a way to get this same effect with iCal?

Hi,  This is not related to your question about ical alarms, but to a previous post you made when your iweb crashed when saving.  I also had to use time machine to transfer all info to a new computer and I am having the same problem when I try to save.   I did not completely understand your solution because I am not very savvy with computers. I did go in and change all the permissions to read and write, but I still have the problem.  I don't know how to "add my account name to the File Info"-
I just spoke with a supervisor from Apple for two hours and who did not solve the problem.  (He thought he did, but he did not and he has not called me back).
If you could give me an explanation of your solution, it would be very helpful and immensely appreciated.
Thank you for any assistance you can give me regarding this.  I really need my iweb!
    [email protected]
Here is the solution you posted:
I figured it out. It was those permissions. I simply added my account name to the File Info. For some reason the Time Machine restoration did not copy the permission for the package (however the contents had the correct permissions.

  • HERE'S HOW TO SHARE iCAL w/ MULTIPLE USERS on 1 Mac

Here's how to share iCal calendars among multiple users on a single Mac.
What you need to do is to move the iCal folder to a shared folder that is accessible to all users and then replace the iCal folder in each user's library folder with a "symbolic link' to the shared iCal folder. The symbolic link looks like an "alias", but if you try this using "aliases" to the shared iCal folder it will not work (trust me). You can create symbolic links using the Terminal, but I have no idea how, and the idea of using the Terminal scares me. The easiest way that I know of to create a symbolic link is with a shareware application called Cocktail. It allows you to do a number of different things including System Maintenance, Network Optimization, etc. It took me a while to remember how to do this; I originally found the information in the Discussions when iCal was first released, but apparently none of those original postings are listed in the forums anymore.
Here's how to do it (you must have Administrator privileges):
First locate your iCal folder (your user name > Library > Application Support > iCal) and make a copy of it (Finder > File > Duplicate). Drag the copy to your Desktop until you're sure iCal is being shared between users.
Next move the original iCal folder into a Shared folder in the Users folder (Hard Disk > Users > Shared > iCal). To make sure all users can access the information, select the Shared folder, choose File > Get Info, click the little Lock icon, then under "Ownership & Permissions -> Details" make sure that the "Owner" is "System", "Group" is "Wheel" and "Access" for Owner, Group and Others is "Read & Write". Do the same with the iCal folder within the Shared folder, but this time, under "Ownership & Permissions -> Details" make sure that the "Owner" is "your user name", "Group" is "Staff" and "Access" for Owner, Group and Others is "Read & Write" and click the "Apply to Enclosed Items" button. I basing this information on what the Ownership & Permissions are for each of the folders in my system.
Open Cocktail (I'm using version 3.6.5). Once the app is open (you must enter an administrator's user name and password) click on the "Files" button, then click on the "Links" button. Where it says "Create Symbolic Link" click on the "Choose" button. Navigate to the iCal folder (Hard Disk > Users > Shared > iCal) and click "Choose" again. In the "Save As" box that appears enter "iCal", then navigate to the Application Support folder in your Home folder (your user name > Library > Application Support) and click "Save". Quit Cocktail and open iCal. You should see all of your calendars as you did before.
Log in under each additional User, move that User's iCal folder (user name > Library > Application Support > iCal) onto the Desktop, then create another Symbolic Link to replace it, using Cocktail as described above. In each case you should see the same calendar information as when you were logged in under your user name. As a test, add a New Event or To Do in iCal under one user, log out and back in under another user and you should see the changes when you open iCal.
Once everything appears to be working, you can delete the iCal folders from each User's Desktop.
As an additional maintenance measure, use Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions.
Unfortunately, if each User has his/her own calendars in iCal they will not be in the shared calendars. Only the calendars in the first iCal folder used to set up the shared folder will be available and I don't know of any way to merge or combine the other user's calendars into one.
Hope this helps and good luck!

If every user first exports their calendars (with unique names) and then the "First" user imports them, before all the other set up, everyone's calendar will be there.
Also, iCalShare lets you publish and subscribe on a computer or across a local network, without having to let everyone see and edit all your calendars.

  • How to sync ical with multiple apple devices and android?

Does anybody have use an android phone in addition to apple devices, and have you figured out how to sync ical with all? (I know there are other calendars that can be used by all, but it means a lot to my husband to stay with ical.)

I tried Yahoo in the past but had trouble with duplicate entries. However, this was a while ago before Yahoo updated their site and this was with syncing to a Windows computer with Outlook in addition to a Mac so my results might not be typical. Yahoo's worth a shot, but my experience with Yahoo is why I use Google Calendar.
Beyond that, I don't know of any other "free" services. There are many other hosted calendar sites that could work, but you'd pay something like $5-$20 per month, which is comparable to MobileMe.
