How to reduce charges when abroad?

I have an iphone here in the UK, but will be visiting the states for 3 weeks next month.
Is it possible to turn the 'Answer-phone' element of this off, so as not to incur charges?
Also, will be I charged for having the iphone turned-on or only if I download data i.e. use safari?

You can turn the answer phone element off by using airplane mode, but this turns off all radios - phone, wi-fi, and bluetooth. This will prevent you from placing calls also - basically turning the iPhone into an iPod and photo viewer - but you can turn airplane mode off to place a call and then turn it back on afterwards.
If airplane mode is not on and you are not connected via wi-fi, you will be charged for data when downloading email and when using Safari.

Total noob here, I've searched all over the place to no avail (or I just didn't know the correct term), but how do you do that?
Basically I'm trying to just extract lines and texts out of it, and filtering and exposure did nothing for me.
As you could see below, the "gray" color was made by dots that are completely black. Is there any way to do that?

You may want to try Filter > Noise > Despeckle, then move to Curves and slide the highlight end of the scale a tad to deliver pure a pure white background.

The system regularly lets the battery drop to about 95% when on the charger, then recharges to 100%. This lets the batery exercise "just a little" all of the time and saves the recharge curcuits from overuse.
Regualr occurence for me.
Also ... you need to let your battery work at least once per month. Let it run down to 40%, but not less if you can at all avoid it. Running thr battery fully dead will shorten the battery life significantly.

I searched through the forums and couldn't find anything on this topic.
I want to make sure that I don't overcharge my player, while still filling it to its enormous capacity. How will I know when it's done charging?

On my touch there is a little icon in the upper left corner of the screen showing my battery symbol with a power volt thing over it to show it is charging. This changes back and forth until the charging is done, then there is nothing on the screen at all.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

I am having problems sending emails when using my ipod touch with wi-fi abroad. When at home my ipod touch receives and I can send emails through my home wi-fi system but when away and logged into other wi-fi networkcan only receive emails and not send them. Internet access is fine when abroad.
I am assuming that this is to do with the outgoing server but this is only a guess!
I am not very techy so any ideas how to resolve this problem would be gratefully received.

Seems like the other networks are blocking you from sending emails.
Do yo have more that one email account on the iPod?
Have you tried sending from another account?

How come the iPod Touch doesn't charge when connected to an USB extension?

I have it plug it directly into the iMac, I can't plug it into an extension cable connected to the iMac. My older iPod Touch charged just fine using the USB extender, but my new one refuses to charge unless it's directly connected to the iMac. Why would Apple change how the iPod charges? Those extension cables are useful when you need to switch out USB devices, since the ports are all in the back of the unit.

I noticed the same thing happened with my iPod touch. It wouldn't charge on my iMac but when I connected it to my Macbook it started up right away. The difference being, I think, is not the computers but the usb hubs. The one on my Macbook has its own power supply where as the one on my iMac doesn't. Try that. Maybe the usb hub just needs to have its own power supply in order for the iPod touch to charge. So if that's the case then the usb extension cable probably won't work at all.
