How to reduce size of iPhoto library ? (after the usual auto-rotate issue)

Hi,
This is my first message here, even I am oftenly reading and searching these forums...
I found many topics about this issue of "auto-rotate settings on camera, that will increase the size of the library".
Thanks Terrence and also Toad, for replying millions of time, to the same question.
(I was actually surprise that you don't have a topic, with all info, and you would simply point the guys to that same topic..., instead of writing again and again..)

etc.. etc...
Summary:
I have started a new library, with the birth of my son, 7 months ago.
I was going to move it and realized : 15Gb, with 5Gb in the "modified" folder.
After looking around here, I found the reason.
And now, the auto-rotate is turned off on my cameras. (and I will try your Xee, to rotate before importing to iPhoto)
Now, my question:
What can I do, with my existing library?
Is there a way to reduce it? to get rid of all the rotated pictures? (could I delete the one in Original folder?
Only solution is to reimport all, in a new library ? (I can't imagine doing again all the events... even if it's only 7 months worth of pictures...)
Thanks for your info and suggestions.
Thierry.

I don't know of any software to remove that tag. If you did and imported the files they would be displayed in the landscape orientation which is not how they were taken. So if you wanted to view them correctly you'd have to rotate them from within iPhoto thus creating a modified version and be back from where you started.
Your best bet would be to go thru the photos using Quicklook to find those portrait oriented photos and use Xee to rotate before importing.
Or use a different DAM (digital asset management) application that can handle those types of files without creating modified versions. I use Expression Media which lets me rotate the files from inside the application without creating modified files.

  • How to reduce size of iPhoto library

My iPhoto library is growing out of proportion to it's content. The iPhoto library file is now 27GB. When I go in and do a show package content I see the following folder sizes:
    Data 649MB
    iPod Photo Cache 15.79GB
    Modified 267MB
    Originals 7.1GB
    Do you see this!
The iPod Photo Cache is TWO times the size of the Originals. How can that be????
Why would this be larger anyway. I thought pictures are getting scaled down to fit on the iPod.
Has anybody any idea how I can reduce the size of this iPod Cache?

    because something has gone wrong
Normally, I would advise against changing things in the iPhoto Library Folder but make a back up - just in case - and you can safely trash that iPod Photo Cache. The worst that will happen is that iPhoto will create a new one next time you sync. When it does, compare the size with this one.

  • How do I backup my iPhoto library to the iCloud?

How do I backup my iPhoto library to the iCloud?

You can only backup the iPhoto libraries on iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPad) to iCloud, not the iPhoto Libraries on a Mac. Use Time Machine to backup your iPhoto Library or create clones of the drives with iPhoto Libraries.
This will change next year, when the new Photos.app will be released for Mac on the new MacOS X 10.10. Then you will be able to store the photo library in the cloud and access it from all your devices.

  • How do I retrieve my iphoto library from the Time Machine back-up drive, when the original iphoto library was on a separate external hard drive that has crashed?

I recently backed up my iMAC and Simpletech external hard-drive to a 1 TB WD Passport  external hard drive, using Time Machine's back-up utility.  Today, I tried to access my iphoto library from the back-up drive, but received a message saying "the iPhoto library is a Time Machine back up, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPHoto with options key held down to choose another library."  Since my Simpletech died on me, what other iPhoto library is it expecting me to access?  I know approximately 169 GB were backed up, and my iPhoto library is roughly 54 GB.

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into
    Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • How can I open my iPhoto library after I installed a new HD?

My hard disk crashed. I got a new one installed. Now, when I sync my iPhone or open iPhoto I get:
"You can't open your photo library using this version of iPhoto.
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
Can this only be fixed by reinstalling Maverick? When I first installed it, my computer slowed down to 80% its usual speed and I saw no benefit.
Can I install the new version of iPhoto without having to install Maverick? If so, where can I find it to download it?

  • How do I restore my iPhoto Library after emptying the trash?

I recently transferred my iPhoto from my external hard drive to my desktop of my macbook air. I have two different iPhoto Libraries on this computer. IphotoAug2014 and IphotoFeb. I just now deleted the iPhotoFeb from my desktop and then emptied my trash! Is there any way to restore the library? HELP!! It is still on my external hard drive, but i have updated it since its been on my desktop.

Try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

  • Problem with getting into iPhoto library after downloading an update for iPhoto. It is saying it is locked on a locked disk. how do we fix this?

Have an OS X 10.9.4 and having problems with iPhoto library after installing iPhoto version 9.5.1 This has locked the iPhoto Library on a locked disk. Any idea on how we unlock this disk?

First, if you've moved the iPhoto library to an external drive, make sure that drive is mounted by opening it in the Finder.
The issue can be caused by sharing the photo library on a network (against Apple's advice) or by opening it in more than one local user account at the same time. You may be able to clear the error by logging out or restarting the computer. If not, do as follows.
Quit iPhoto if it's running, locally or on any file-sharing client. Select the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Usually it's in the Pictures folder, but you may have moved it somewhere else. Right-click or control-click the library icon and select
              Show Package Contents
from the popup menu. In the folder that opens, navigate to
    Database/apdb/lockfile.pid
and move that file, if it exists, to the Trash. Close the Finder window.

  • How can I get iMovie 10 to see my iPhoto Library after I relocated it.

How can I get iMovie 10 to see my iPhoto Library after I relocated it. I moved my iPhoto Library to a secondary hard drive, because my main SSD wasn't large enough. I then upgraded to IMove 10.0.4 and also moved my iMovie Library to the secondary hard drive. When I highlight the iPhoto Library in iMovie there is nothing there. Any ideas on how to get iMove to find my relocated iPhoto Library?

I think I may have solved my own problem. I left cliked on the relocated iPhoto Library and went to "Open with >." I then went to "Other...." I then set the wind located in the bottom labled "Enable:" to "All Applications" and picked iMovie. It gave me a error, but the ultimate result was that iMove now was linked to my iPhoto Library.

  • How can I access my iPhoto library folder?

My hard drive recently had to be replaced, and when they replaced it, they updated to OSx 10.9. I had not backed up my photos before my hard drive crashed, but they backed up all my files for me. I went to open my iphoto library from the backup files and as a new (to me) version of iphoto 11 opened, I got a message saying that it had to update the photos in my library in order for them to be compatible with this version of iPhoto and that after updating them, I'd no longer be able to read them on an older version of iphoto. I clicked ok. It only imported 9 photos (out of several thousand). I went to finder and tried to open the iphoto library folder (which contains the library file and the cache, etc.), but the folder will not open. Instead, when I click to open the library folder, it brings up iphoto, as though to indicate that my library is there. Did I somehow unknowingly overwrite my library or something?? Any ideas why I can't access my iphoto library? Are my photos gone?
I'm stupid so I don't have copies of the photos anywhere else. I don't have Time Machine or anything. Did I irreversibly screw up??

I didn't think to check what photos were there or what the library size was before trying to import at first. How do I restore my backup of the iphoto library? (sorry if that's a stupid question). I checked in the Masters folder and only saw a few of my photos (the same ones that were imported to iphoto).
I definitely know it was a mistake not to have a backup of the photos. It'll be the first thing I do if I can get them back. The mistake I was referring to in my initial post was clicking "ok" when it asked to update---but from what you're saying it sounds like that wouldn't have deleted anything.
I'm thinking maybe the backup is not complete (even though I asked the tech people 5 times if it was!), because I checked the imovie events folder, and it's also empty (and it definitely shouldn't be)! If this turns out to be the case, I may have to go back to the repair place to see if they can still pull files off.

  • How to reduce videos in iPhoto from iPhone for mailing or uploading

How do you reduce videos from an iPhone 4s for e-mailing or uploading to sites like Flickr? iPhoto gives you a choice of photo sizes to e-mail but doesn't allow you to e-mail videos. The videos are on my iPhone and my iMac.

You can export (or drag) the videos out of the iPhoto interface and drop them onto your Desktop (which will copy them from the iPhoto Library onto the Desktop).
You can then double-click the new video file on the Desktop to open it with Quicktime (hopefully this is your default video-playing app). Within Quicktime, click on Quicktime in the menubar and use the Export feature to create a smaller version of your video file. That smaller version of your file will be better compressed for internet uploading.
If you have Quicktime X, then you will also have a Share menu in the Menubar with some built-in sharing options such as YouTube that can be more convenient.

  • How do I transfer my iPhoto library from iPhone to my new computer?

How do I transfer my iPhoto library from iPhone to my computer?
My photos that I lost from my computer at the weekend are still on my iphone but I don't want to lose them and would like them back on my computer.
    Help very welcome.

The photo sync is one way only - computer to iphone.
Copy them from your backup copy of your computer.
When pics are synced to iphone they are reduced in size/quality.  You can e-mail them to yourself, but they will never be of the original quality.

  • How do I copy & transfer iPhoto library from one mac to another?

I have a Power mac G5 and want to transfer a complete copy of my iPhoto 6 library (with all the specific albums) from my Power mac G5 to a new mac mini. I have an external drive. Is there a way to do this operation direct, between computers, or do I go through the external drive? Which do you recommend and how do I do this?
After the copy transfer is completed, in the future, when I add new photos to my iPhoto library on my G5 and I want to transfer a copy of the new photos to the mac mini, do I follow the same process you outline above? Will the future copy transfer require I delete the library on the mac mini, and make a new complete copy transfer, or will a future transfer only pick-up the new photos?
    Thanks,
    HDP

1 - connect the two machines together (a network or firewire target mode) quit iPhoto and drag the iuPhoto library from the old to th enew machine
2 - alternatively you can connect the EHD to the old machine, drag the iPhoto library to it, move it to the new machine and drag the iPhoto library to the picturews folde on it
3 - there is no way to sync the libraries - if the two are on a network you could use iPhoto library manager (only if both use the same version of iPhoto ) or use image capture to move the photo to the desktop from the camera and tehn impor tthem into both - but you can not automatically sync them you have to load the photos twice or use IPLM to do it

  • How can I move itunes/iphoto library from SSD to HD on my new imac?

I have a lovely new imac with the SSD option. My old comps' boot disk was migrated to the SSD because it is the boot disk for the new computer. This is great and speedy but now I'd like to move my huge itunes and iphoto libraries from the SSD to the 2TB HD. I would rather not move the whole 'home' folder. I would appreciate if anyone could tell me how to do this.
    with thanks in advance, nedro

Go to ~/Music/iTunes and drag & drop the iTunes Media folder to your HDD. It will not actually be moved, it will be copied. Depending on its size this can take a few minutes. When the copying is finished open iTunes and go to Preferences/Advanced. The first area is +iTunes Media folder location+. Click the Change button, browse to the location of your iTunes Media folder on the HDD and press Choose.
Quit iTunes. Then drag only the iTunes Media folder from the SSD to the Trash and empty. When you restart iTunes it will be using the media folder from it new location.
To move the iPhoto library, quit iPhoto. Got to ~/pictures and drag & drop the iPhoto Library to the HDD. It will be copied to the HDD. Drag the library on the SSD to the Trash and empty. Open iPhoto, follow the dialog in the window that appears to locate and choose your iPhoto Libray on the HDD.

  • I have a few hundred duplicates in my iPhoto library, but the file sizes are different.  So one is 1.3mb and one is 567kb.  I want to delete the smaller ones, but short of comparing each duplicate, is there a way to do this?

I have a few hundred duplicates in my iPhoto library, but the file sizes are different.  So one is 1.3mb and one is 567kb.  I want to delete the smaller ones, but short of comparing each duplicate, is there a way to do this?  I've been looking at Duplicate Annhilator but I don't think it can do it.
    Thanks!

I just ran a test with iPhoto Library Manager, Duplicate Annihilator, iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner, Duplifinder and Photodedupo.  I imported a folder of 5 photos into a test library 3 times, allowing iPhoto to import duplicates.  I then ran the 5 photos thru resizer to reduce their jpeg compression but all other aspects of the file the same.
None of the duplicate removal apps found set that was reduced in the file resizer. That's probably due to the fact that the file creation date was being used as a criteria and the resized photo would have a different file creation date even though the Image Capture date was the same.
They all found the 3 regular duplicates and some of them would mark two and leave the 3rd unmarked.  iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner can sort the found duplicates by file size but if the file was edited to get the reduced file size it might not be found as it would have a different file creation/modification date.
iPhoto Library Manage was able to find all duplicates and mark them as such if the file names were the same the the filename option was selected.  Otherwise it also missed the modified, resized version.  It allowed one to select the one photo to save before going to work on the library.
So if a photo has been reduced in image quality or pixel size it will not be considered a duplicate.
