How to reformat a drive running Mtn Lion

A friend's Mac running Mountain Lion is producing repeated odd errors. Various new apps refuse to install and run. He suspects the cause is a rogue utility he installed. He's determined to back it up, reformat the drive and remount Mountain Lion. Then reinstall his apps and data.
Can he use the hidden partition to re-install the OS? What are the recommended procedures in this situation?

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices.
Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
Using Setup Assistant
Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.

  • How to reformat secondary drive with Home folder on

Hi guys, I have an issue and Im getting myself confused as to how to go about this.
Basicly, I have a 250 GB SSD bootdrive and a 750GB HD data drive.
On the SSD is Mavericks and a couple of apps, on the data drive is eveything else, home folder, apps etc.
I have just bought Adobe's creative cloud subscription and it wont allow me to install anything because the data drive is case sensitive. So I need to reformat the data drive to non case sensitive, it wont allow me to install it onto the SSD which is already non case sensitive, as it only allows instalation where the libary and home folder is, stupidly.
So far Ive backed eveything up both though a network time machine and also Ive backed up all my documents from the home folder, the libary and system folders and a few apps onto an external USB drive. However I cant backup my movie folder with all my final cut pro stuff on, because its too big for the external drive, it is however backed up through time machine.
Now I need to format the data drive, but Im not sure how to go about this without messing up the home folder and user aspects, as surely as soon as I format it, Ive bascily lost myself as a user.
I thought about moving the home folder back to the SSD temporailly, and then reformating,  But in order to do this, I'd have to delete the entire movie folder off the data drive first to get it to fit on there, which is only backed up via time machine. I know all the stuff on the data drive is going anyway, Im just a bit paranoid about deleting it all before doing anything else.  Is this the only way around it, or is there another way?
Can I move the  bulk of the home folder back onto the ssd, but not the movie folder, to enable me to keep my user account and reformat the drive before putting the home folder back onto the data drive, or shoul Ijust delete the movie folder and hope I can get it back through time machine..
Ive read using time machine to reinstate the whole drive will revert it back to case sensitive, is this true? Or can I just copy folders off time machine back onto the newly formatted non case sensitive drive? So my movie folder can just be copied back to the newly formatted data drive without issue?
Thanks for any help, I dont want to mess up all my permissions and user accounts and my head just inst working right at the moment to figure out the best way.

Your best bet is to clone both devices onto two separate drives, or together onto a larger external hard drive that can cover the capacity of both with its own separate partitions.  http://www.bombich.com/ Carbon Copy Cloner is able to do that for you.  Test your clone boots and is mapped correctly before erasing the drive in question.

  • How do get gnome to run on Lion?

I am attempting to get Gnome to run on Lion.  I cannot find the system level .xinitrc.  Any suggestions?

I'm not sure. Are we talking about different things? It seems the original poster just wants to run gnome. You are be talking about swapping out the entire windoing system.
I still haven't downloaded and installed gnome. I find X11 crude and ugly and I have no intention of running gnome. Running an X11 window manager other than XQuartz seems very easy - even easier than I suggested above. Just create a ~/.MacoSX/environment.plist file and create an environment variable named USERWM. Set its value to be the path to whatever window manager you want to use. I used /usr/X11/bin/twm because I don't want to work too hard at X11. Log out and back in. Run an X program. Voila!
I also ran in fullscreen but I couldn't do a screen capture from that. I was impressed that it ran in windowed mode too.

  • How to reformat for bootcamp on mountain lion?

So i have a late 2010 macbook pro 15" that was recently upgraded to mountain lion and i have been trying to boot camp it for the purpose of playing windows games, however i have run into a myriad of problems in my attempts to.
Firstly, when trying to partition the bootcamp program tells me the same old "cannot partition because some files cannot be moved" error, which i have searched and found that it requires me to reformat my harddrive.
    Seems simple enough.
However when trying to boot into the disk utility on startup by holding down the option keys (or the x key, or both) it has not let me and boots straight into my mac os as if i wasnt holding the keys down at all.
This is one of my main problems, my fear is that if i cannot boot into disk utility on startup, i may not be able to even switch back to my mac os if i am succsesful in bootcamp.
Does anyone know what this means?
Furthermore, as i am still debating whether to go through with this or not, i have purchased i defrag and might try to defragment the drive from there if at all possible
Any and all help from here would be greatly appreciated as it seems no one has experienced all of the problems i have in the same attempt
    thanks

Can I assume you meant a HP a700n.
If you are trying to perform a Recovery that would take the computer basck to the DAY ONE experience, then see:

Only Windows 7 is supported by Apple in Bootcamp at this time, however you can install Windows 8/ 8 Beta into virtual machine software.

  • Can I use the same TimeMachine backup (ext.drive) on my desktop and laptop (but one running Lion, the other Mtn.Lion)?

Want to use the TM backup from my desktop to keep my laptop up to date when I travel, and then vice versa, when I return.  The laptop (MacBook Pro) is running Mtn. Lion 10.8.3, but the iMac desktop is running Lion 10.7.5.  Is this even possible with the same external hard drive being used to go back and forth like that?

You can use the Time Machine backup files of the iMac onto your MacBook without any problem because your MacBook has got a newer version than the one the iMac has got. However, you shouldn't do it in your iMac, and if you do that, you might damage OS X because your Time Machine apps will replace Lion apps.
You can still restore individual data onto your iMac > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html Note that you can back up both Macs onto the same external disk, but you can't use the same backup in both, so Time Machine will create another backup for each Mac you have

  • How do I transfer itunes library to new hard drive running lion os

I have a Mac Pro with 2 hard drives in it.
Hard drive #1 has Leopard OS and my iTunes library on it
Hard drive #2 has Lion 10.7.4 OS and this is where I want to move my iTunes library to from hard drive #1.
How can I due this insuring that all playlists, etc. transfer seamlessly.  I will then only be using the new Lion OS
to run iTunes (and this will also communicate with Apple TV, etc.)
    Thanks!

Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old hard drive to /Music/ on new hard drive.
    Start iTunes.
    That is all.
You can also leave it where it it, hold Option, launch iTunes.
Slect Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the Leopard drive.
This will be your iTunes for both OS, whichever you boot into.

  • I've gotten a kernel panic 4 times in a row while trying to reinstall lion osx from a flash drive to a reformatted hard drive.  How is this possible when there's "nothing" on my computer?

My SSD failed and I was instructed to reformat my hard drive and restore my files.  I erase my hard drive using Disk Utility and reinstalled Lion from a flash drive. While Lion is installing, I get a kernel panic.  That's happened now four times in a row and I'm befuddled because I don't have anything on my computer to conflict right?  Please help.

    eubiedoo wrote:
Do you think it's ram related?
No way to tell unless you test it.  Like I said kernel panics are usually hardware related.  Since your Macbook Pro is from the "2009" era, run the Hardware Test disc which you should already have - Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test
Apple Store diagnostic testings are FREE.  It's the repairs you are responsible for if out of warranty.

The Mid-2007 model didn't come out until June 2007, so you must have bought an earlier model. It won't run Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.x), but it might run Lion (10.7.x) if you can get hold of a copy, depending on which earlier model it is.
Lion requires at least a Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The first MacBook Pros came out in January 2006, but they had "Core Duo" processors (no "2"). The Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros came out in October 2006. You could have bought either in March 2007.

  • How to access files from 2nd hard drive while running Mountain Lion

Not sure the best way to word this and if there is a forum with and answer already I apologize. I recently Upgraded to an SSD split in 2 partitions one with Windows 8 the other half running mountain lion. I replaced the superdrive with the old hard drive that has Snow Leopard and all my documents. The old SATA HD appears and the file structure is visible but I cannot access any files. I recieve an access denied message. ANy help would be appreciate it. Also secondary issue and less important is due to limited space on the SSD I would like to move the user data to the old HD so it would boot ML from SSD but pull and save all downloads, documents, music etc onto the old SATA HD.

When you get the drive permissions worked out, and the home directory duped from the SSD to the other HDD, there is a way to tell the OS where the new home directory resides.
System Preferences > Users & Groups
Unlock the preference pane. Now right click on your User name ( Admin). The pop-up will say Advanced Options ...
Home Directory: Choose...  and pick the new HDD home directory location.
    Lock the panel down again.
    Done.

  • Upgraded to Mtn Lion, runs like a tortoise

Upgraded to Mtn Lion, runs like a tortoise: how do I speed up my system?

Ok, so then we can proceed to determine what process is sucking up all CPU cycles. Have a look in Activity Monitor, sorting out processes by %CPU (click on the column label). Holler back if you need help identifying what each process is.
May also want to check out the items in the bottom pane for more clues:
In CPU, check out how much %User, %System and %Idle is the total CPU time being apportioned. On a personal computer, most should be in idle time (compared to a server). Note that people have reported that ML has a lot more background processes running than Lion did.
System memory will show how your 8GB are being used. In mine, free mem (green) is usually from a fourth to almost half of the total, unless I'm running heavy duty stuff like VMW Fusion and a VM or two. Check also the swapping activitu (page ins vs. page outs).
In Disk Activity, if you're doin' nothing, so should the drive; if something is pegging it, will need to find out who the culprit is.
Same for Network. Unles you're downloading multiple copies of the ML installer or othe such massive undertakings, traffic should be light unless some unknown is hogging the wire.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to reformat a Macbook pro 2011 hard drive?

    Hello,
How do you reformat a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7.3) 2011s Hard drive? I already backed up all the files I wanted to save. But since I have the new Macbook pro 2011 (only a few months since I got it) it didn't come with an installation disc, but instead already came with all the applications. I'm wondering how to reformat the hard drive so it wipes out everything and I can start fresh and what would happen to all the applications?

Well Lion has a Lion Recovery Partition on the drive you can access by holding command r and booting, there you can erase the Lion OS X partition completely (all files and programs) and reinstall Lion or simply reinstall Lion if there is a issue with it (no programs or files are touched in this second procedure)
Lion is downloaded from apple's servers, you need AppleID and a fast reliable internet connection with no bandwidth caps limiting you.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
If you want to replace the drive, there is software called Carbon Copy Cloner than can clone both the Lion OS X Partition and the Lion Recovery Partition to a external drive intact (excpet what's in the Trash, no Filevualt, no bootcamp, use free Winclone for that)
Hold the option key and you can boot from the external drive and format and clone everything to the new internal drive. TimeMachine of 10.7.2 and later can be booted from it's Lion Recovery Parttion as well just to restore only, cloning is better process because it gives full access to everything like before on the internal drive.
    http://www.bombich.com/index.html
Some newer Mac's have Lion Internet recovery built in where the firmware will install the Lion Recovery/OS back onto a completely blank/new hard drive.

Well if there is a EFI block, then running a program in OS X isn't going to do a lick of good.
After all EFI was designed for Trusted Computing and Digital Rights Management, to act between the OS and hardware, can read drives, contact the Internet and everything.
Windows doesn't use EFI, will have UEFI in Windows 8 though.
