How to reformat ext hd from pc for mac use?

My son bought a new large external hd and passed along his older 500 gig one to me to use for back up (I am getting a new iMac and want to use it for Time Machine). He was using a pc.
My question is: how do I format it to work with an iMac? I pulled up "info" and it says I have "read only" privaleges.
I think I have to use disk utility somehow, but when I tried to look it up, I kept seeing articles on partitioning and formatting. I think I just want to format it. (don't I?).
If someone could explain to me in simple terms what I am supposed to do, I would be so grateful.

1 Open Disk Utility
2 locate the drive you want to use. It should be listed something like '500 GB Seagate' or whatever make it is.
3 listed directly below the drive should be the current volume(s) in use. If it is a Windows drive, it might be named 'Untitled' or similar.
4 Select the drive, and not the volume. You should get a window with several tabs, labeled 'First Aid', 'Erase', 'Partition', 'RAID', and 'Restore'. Select 'Partition'.
5 Select the volume scheme you want. I suggest using just one volume. Click the 'Options' button, and select GUID for the partition scheme.
6 partition and format the volume, using Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

How do I upload photos from iPhone to Mac using Photos

I have photos on my iPhone that I wish to upload to my iMac and then share using Skype. How do I do that now that my iPhoto library has been converted to Photos?
(1) I do not want to send my photos via iCloud
(2) I do not want to copy any photos from my iMac to my iPhone.
Why did this get so complicated? Why can't I drag and drop?

How do I transfer files from pc to mac using an external drive?

I get the that I copy files from the PC to the external drive and then copy to mac. What I do not know is what format does the external drive need to be? FAT32 is somewhat limiting.

I don't do Windows, but Macs can read & write ExFAT, too.
If the PC has an app that will format & write any variant of Mac OS Extended, those are native to Macs.

I'm a PC and need to export files suitable for a Mac user. Currently files are NTSC DV avi's. What generic format to export so they can view and/or play in iMovie etc.
I'm sure it's Quicktime mov but there are so many different flavours/codecs and I don't use Mac so where to start? I'm on CS5.5 and I also have Quicktime Pro.

I don't know anything about imovie, but NTSC DV is the native SD format for Premiere on mac.

To make a 24-bit AVI file in Photoshop, go to File>Export>Render Video. Then, under File Options, choose AVI from the Quicktime Export drop-down menu. Click the Settings button. Click the Settings button in the AVI Settings window. Change Compression to None, and then choose "Millions of Colors" from the Depth drop-down under Compression.
The Millions of Colors option is for 24-bit video (8-bit R+G+B channels, 8x3=24). Millions of Colors+ is for 32-bit video (24-bit video plus an 8-bit alpha channel).

Either format the drive (I'm also assuming this is an external drive) on a Windows machine, or get a third-party NTFS Driver.
There are a number of iffy open-source ones out there, and two commercial for-pay drivers:
Tuxera NTFS, and
Paragon NTFS
Both products seem fairly well regarded (I use Tuxera personally, but it has nothing to do with any opinion I have about the relative quality of the two drivers; I simply happened to be using a free product from Tuxera when I needed to ugrade to get some additional features). If there are any differentiators between the two, they are probably: Tuxera is focused entirely on NTFS, and some of their developers are major contributors to the OSXFuse project which replaced MacFUSE; and, Paragon also makes an ExtFS driver (Ext is a family of common Linux filesystems) and has a bundle offer for the two drivers bought together.
If you go the commercial driver route, you should of course research the two yourself and make your own decision - based on your own requirements, budget, and so on.
