How to reformat Macbook 7,1 on OSX 10.6.8 with a 10.6.6 disc? or should I purchase 10.7? Can I reformat in the process?
I recently purchased a used Macbook 7,1 that has OS X 10.6.8 already installed on it. I want to reformat the drive in order to remove the old users files and settings.. but I have a macbook pro OS X 10.6.6 disc only. When I insert it, it says "Mac OS X Leopard cannot be installed on this computer".
How can I reformat the laptop?
I eventually want to install OS X 10.7 also, If I purchase and download it will it let me reformat during the upgrade process?

Call Apple Customer Services 1-800-692-7753 with the serial no. of the MB and they will in all probability be able to supply you with copies of the original discs for a handling and postage charge. (about $16 per disc)
The retail SL disc is about $30

the disc is spinning and I see the apple on the screen with the spinning gear and after a while it just turns off OR the few times it does get past that point when I go into disc utility it tells me that it can not install on this machine!

I'm not entirely sure I follow you here, home sharing comes with iTunes 10.2, so far as I am aware even iTunes 10.6.1 only requires OS X 10.5.8 or better. On that basis I'm not sure why you think you have a problem. -

This happens on both my Macs: Macbook running OS 10.4, and iMac running OS 10.5. The message doesn't say which privilieges I needs, nor anything about being the administrator, but on the iMac I am the administrator, and on the MacBook I have administrator privileges.
When I try send video clips as attachments, I get a message saying Quicktime can't open the .avi - why?

I use my external hard drive to store all of my music, but now I can't save anything on it with my new Mac. Is there a way that I can reformat it or something without losing everything I already have on there?
I suggest to copy all your files in your external drive to your Macbook and reformat that external drive to Mac OS Extended Journaled or exFat.
Once you've done that - then copy all the files back to your external drive.
Do not format your external drive if you haven't copied whats in your external drive. You'll lose everything. -
I recently bought a used macbook pro. I can pretty much do everything I need on it until I want to change setting and such things. Then it asks me for an administrator password which I do not know or have. On top of that I do not have the OS disc either. Is there a way I can SAFELY reset or delete the password so I can set my own without the possibility of screwing thing up. LIke I said I can do most anything. I figured this out when attempting to tether it to my smartphone for internet access (I do all the time from my desktop but my desktop is a PC so things are a little different) I am a very new mac user, I have always been a devoted PC user until now. I have to say I am really loving my macbook pro I may just stick with mac from now on (if I can get this problem figured out without too much stress.

There actually is a slightly easier way in OS X 10.5 or greater.
1. Start up in single-user mode (hold Command-S as the computer starts up).
2. Type: mount -uw /
3. Press Return.
4. Type this:
passwd (user's short name)
Replace "(user's short name)" with the short name of the user account whose password you wish to reset. If you are not sure what the account name is, you can get a list of user names by typing: ls /Users
5. Press Return.
6. Enter a new user password.
7. Press Return.
8. Type: reboot
9. Press Return. -

I am trying to move photos from my hard drive to my mac. Mac is using an updated version of Iphoto and is denying the transfer.
How do I get around this? Do I download the order version? or can I not get my photos? If anyone can help please do.
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto.

THere are lots of totally different ways to "copy your photos" onto a hard drive
Exactly how did you do that? The correct way to move an iPhoot library is to verify that the hard drive is formattted Mac OS extended (journaled) and then to drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to it - reverse to bring it back - just drag it from the EHD to the pictures folder (default location) on your computer
Why are you doing this?
you can try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database - depending on what has been going on this might resolve things
