How to reformat OSX while ensuring my data is backed up (iTunes, music, pictures, etc)

I have a Mid 2012 MBP running 10.8.5 and would like to reformat it. However, I would like to ensure that my iTunes library is backed up and remains in tact, as well as any other music, photos, etc...
Also, I use Serato for DJing purposes - i would like to ensure that the metadata inside that software (containing pre-defined cue points, samples, etc...) is also preserved and able to be ported back over post-reformat.
Can somebody help guide me in the direction that I'm looking to go?
Thank you
PS - I have a 500GB external drive that i can backup to

Well, I want to reformat my drive for a simple reason - I just want to start fresh. This was my first MBP (first major Apple device aside from iOS devices) and there was a bit of a learning curve. I'm traditionally a windows guy, and have been in IT for several years - and I've finally come around in the game of the two. However, reformatting and really reinstalling an Apple OS in its entirety is the next thing I'd like to get familiar with - especially to do it on my own to get familiar with it to help for work purposes.
My only concern is ensuring that my iTunes data can come back, and some certain metadata inside another application will be preserved.
I really just want to familiarize myself with the re-installation process (plus I like to perform regular housekeeping on my machines). It's been a little over a year and I'm sure I've got a bunch of junk laying around on this thing at this point - but like I said, this was my learning curve, and I'm ready to start fresh with this puppy.
So, any advice from this point on would be wonderful. Thanks!

    Hi valleydave,

The first one goes over, in-depth, what you're looking for in regards to "off site" iTunes.

  • How can you get songs already on your iPod back into iTunes?

I previously posted this question under a really bad title and got no answers, so here's a quick summary with a more relevant title:
Due to some mistakes I made, I lost most of my music library from my computer (& iTunes), but I still have all the songs on my iPod (which I backed up). The problem is that if I try to sync it with iTunes, iTunes simply tries to ERASE any songs on my iPod that aren't already in iTunes. Even if I set the synchronization to manual, which would stop the erasing, I still don't know how to get the songs back onto my computer. (They are stored in an unusuable form on the iPod.)
Below is the original post with more details. This can't be such an unusual situation - there must be a way to recover songs on your iPod back to your computer...
Note to Apple: I'd love to buy a lot more from the Apple store but I can't use iTunes at all until I resolve this.
I had to get a new computer. (I'm using a PC but I love Macs.) The new computer is running XP Pro and I have a 4th generation iPod (click wheel).
Initially I copied the iPod music directory from the old computer to the new one and launched iTunes. It worked - but 60% of my library was missing, including all but 2 of my purchased songs!
Luckily I still have my entire library on my iPod. So I backed up my iPod, then uninstalled iTunes and deleted the iTunes directory from my PC. Then I reinstalled iTunes. Guess what? Somehow it still remembered the previous library (with 60% missing!) And when it saw my iPod attached, it deleted all the songs to match!
Lucky I made that backup - I copied it back to my iPod and things seem fine. But how do I get the songs from my iPod back into iTunes? Especially the ones I purchased from the Apple store. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you kind folks.
    - Jeff

  • How to import songs AND all the data from iPod to iTunes?

    Hi,
I am looking for a tool that can import more than just the music from iPod to iTunes. I have tried several apps to no avail. (many mentioned in another post here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1576568&tstart=15 )
I "upgraded to iTunes 9", but then my library disappeared the other night. All my music and video files are there intact, but the iTune Library.itl was wiped.
It gets even worse. Not knowing iTunes had lost my iTunes Library.itl content, I accidentally deleted all of the old library files (stored under "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder) and then de-fragmented my computer. So now the ".itl" file cannot be recovered in anyways as every data block on the HDD is overwritten.
Adding the music folders back into iTunes does NOT transfer all the metadata (play count, last played, rating, genre, last skipped, times skipped, track number, comments, artwork, lyrics, etc.). This information is VERY important if you have over 5k songs like I do.
Alas, there is another way to recover my library file. All this metadata information (as well as the music and video files) are available on my classic iPod with its massive hard drive.
The challenge is finding a tool that would transfer the metadata as well. And so far after trying 6 different titles none transfers all the metadata. They all change the "Date Added" field with today's date. The ideal tool needs to keep that field same as it is on the iPod.
These are the ones I tried:
    -iPodAccess
    -CopyTrans
    -iDump
    -PodtoPC
    -TouchCopy09
    -iPodCopy
Does anyone know a tool that would move all the information from my iPod to a new iTunes?
    Thanks

Aniosoft iBackup Pro seems to be very user-friendly, but it's costly though, $40. http://www.aniosoft.com
They have a free trial version where you can backup 6 songs from each playlist, so try it out if you think it's worth it.

  • How to back up iTunes music so it can be re-imported with Info intact?

After downlaoding latest i Tunes [how I hate to see that notification, "new version available"], lost a whole load of tracks and all Playlists. DOUBLE BAH!!
Took days to sort out problems with iTunes, but done now. [Not before I joined "iTunes *****" - does anybody who uses i Tunes not hate the awful software??]
However, this is not the first time apple software has lost tracks and data. ...  [I know, everyone seems to have it happen!] so, ....
I back all my music up on seperate Hard Drive, but when i reimport, it has lost all track info, and, INFURIATINGLY, most tracks have a numeral before the name, which screws up the filing, as u get:
eg: 02 Beethoven, 02Bob Dylan, 03 Bach, 03 Adele... hope you get my drift!
Means I have to rename and re-enter Info for EACH individual bl**ding track.. aaaargh...!!
So is there any way one can back up I pod tunes files so they contain the necessary data to re-import cleanly, I wonder?
Be very keen to get feedback
    best

You may get better response, if you post your iTunes issues in the iTunes community forum.

  • How to use two harddrives on one Macbook Pro to store Itunes music

I have 2 harddrives in my macbook pro and have more music than can be on one drive.   I Know that I can get Itunes to point to either drive but not to both at the same time. Does anyone know how to accomplish using both drives "seamlessly" with one copy of Itunes on one Macbook Pro, please? I do not intend to swap drives. Both would be on at all times.

I keep mine on multiple internal drives by completely disabling iTunes automatically managing music for me, but if you do that you are also responsible for keeping things organized yourself.  There's various other advantages and disadvantages to doing it that way but it isn't for  people who don't like tinkering with how things work but just want it to  do it for them.
You can tell iTunes to change where to store media and it will put new media in that location from that point on unless you do a consolidate/organize in which case you're in trouble if it can't put it all together in one place.

  • How to add my backed up iTunes Music library...

Hi, I had to restore my MacBook Pro to factory settings, and I moved my iTunes Music library to an external hard drive by copying the music folder (180 GB), and now I want to copy that folder again to iTunes, that has no info, its all clean.
Whats the best way to do it? I dont want to loose anything, and I want to do it as easy as I can, is there a way to add all my music to the new library folder in one step?
    thanks.

THe same thing happened to me when My laptop crashed last semester. I had to replace the hard drive and a whole mess of stuff... anyway...
All you need to do is put the CD in and copy the music to the iTunes folder. It was that easy for me. If you have any trouble, call the manufacturer of the new computer (it probably has a warranty, and might have some tricky settings that could be putting a wrench in the works). Usually, they will help you get your new computer up and running, and know the ins and outs of transferring data from one system to another.

  • How do I import songs from external h.d. back into iTunes after re-install?

    Hello.
Heres the story. I keep all of my music on an external drive (thank God) and have my iTunes music folder location set as that drive. After my system crashed, I had to re-install my OS and now I have no idea how I can play my music again from itunes. I don't want to put all of the music onto my iBook's hard drive, but I don't know how else to let iTunes know where my music is.
Sorry if I am not explaining this very well.
Any suggestions would be more than appreciated. I am about to drive across the country and really need to have access to my music or I will never make the journey.
    Thanks...

iTunes prefs -> Advanced. Set the iTunes music folder location to where your music is on the external.
Now go to iTunes menu File -> Add folder to library and select the music folder on the external.

  • How can I keep from losing apps, data and photos with iTunes?

I am setting up an iPhone for the first time on iTunes.  I am trying to prepare for moving to the iCloud from me.com.
    - I authorized the computer running iTunes>>>  successful, I think
    - transferred purchases to iTunes>>> successful, I think
    - I synced the apps >>>  all apps on the iPhone were deleted
    - went back to sync apps & selected the boxes in the left panel>>>>> apps were installed on iPhone, no organization, data lost
    - restored iPhone from (automatic) backup>>> all apps were restored with data & organization, then iTunes automatically synced & removed apps
    - selected sync apps to be able to select all apps in left pane, but did not apply sync
    - restored iPhone from (automatic) backup>>> all were restored, but iTunes has not yet synced to remove all apps
How in the world do you get iTunes to save the apps & data that you have without having what you have wiped out?
I don't have anything but the following:
    - apps + data
    - contacts
    - email
    - calendar
    - photos
I have no songs, videos or other media.  I have only what is on the iPhone.  I am NOT trying to wipe it out or put info on it from my computer. I just want to upgrade the iPhone to the latest iOS and preserve what I have on the iPhone.  Is this an unusual expectation?  Why does iTunes wipe the iPhone when it syncs?  Shouldn't I have to somehow delete something without it automatically being deleted?
It is like having a living, breathing NIGHTMARE!
Can someone please advise me the steps to take to do this?
I am just trying to prepare my wife's phone so that I can try to move both our phones to iCloud since me.com is disappearing.  I can't wait to start the process of actually moving the phones.  What will that be like if I can't even get her phone upgraded to iOS 5.1 without losing everything?
    Please help.
    Thanks.

I forgot to mention that I am running iTunes on a Windows 7 PC.
I put this in a reply because I couldn't find out how to edit the post.

  • How Do I convert image in xml data file back into a JPG?

I have a user submitted for with an image field and some text fields on it.
User uploads an image, enters text, clicks submit by email.
I get the xml data file by email.
I create a spreadsheet from it.
text field data is there, in the image field column theres the encoded in text image.
how do I convert that back into an actual jpg??

Simply to review proper proceedure and verify we are all on the same page.
First, set Pan Mode to Stereo Left/Right.
Then you need to change the XHA1's "Stereo" configuration to "Dual Mono".
Each will then automatically pan to the center.
Then turn one of the channels off.
This will work in either the Browser or in a Timeline.
