How to refresh iPhoto Videos in iMovie

Hi. I've just learned to use iPhoto for images and to put videos into iMovie via importing them to iPhoto. However, if iPhoto and iMovie are open, I have to quit iMovie to see the update of files added to iPhoto Movies.  How do I refresh iPhoto Videos  in iMovie without quitting iMovie?

Hi Sidekick,
Do you (or anyone else) know if iMovie can prompt you to delete the video files off of the phone (as iPhoto does) before dismounting the device?  Otherwise, it seems that you are then forced to manually do so by hand in the cameral roll on the device.
Additionally, I learned from this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UyHksf02bs (about 1/2 way in)...
...that copying video events within iMovie (from drive to drive) can be done by clicking and dragging the event, but by holding down the command button while doing so truly moves the project without leaving the original copy in place.  This is what I would really like to do in iPhoto.  "Move" the videos from iPhoto to iMovie so I don't have to keep track of each copy session and then go back and delete.
I've tried holding command with no luck.  Also tried cut and paste, but it won't paste into iMovie.  You can certainly "move to trash", but it sure would be nice if it had a "move to iMovie" option.
Any ideas?
Many thanks!
Rob

  • Re-import a deleted iPhoto video to iMovie??

    Hi,
I've posted here before about discrepancies in the date and times of some iPhoto Video as shown in the iPhoto Video library of iMovie '09.
I've manually changed the dates in iMovie of some video and this corrects the issue. However, there are far too many clips to do them all manually.
Also, while attempting to find the cause of the incorrect dates I deleted an iPhoto Video from the iMovie library. iMovie has scanned iPhoto for new video several times, but does not re-import the clip.
Can anybody tell me how I can re-import that clip to iMovie?
How can I correct the dates of the other video?
I thought of deleting all the iPhoto videos in iMovie and when I restart iMovie it would scan for them again, but I am worried that it will not import them again, like that clip I mentioned.
    Can anybody help?

    Everyone,
Thanks so much for contributing to this topic and making effort to answer my questions. I called Apple to inquire about this and I have a couple of suggestions that were given to me that may be of some help.
Two solutions were given to me:
    1) As QuickTimeKirk stated earlier, .mov or .(whatever else might go here) is only a container for other files. So .mov is not the problem or the unreadable file for Imovie, but whatever other file that may be contained in the .mov container is the problem. Therefore, you may have to obtain a 3rd pary converter. They suggested something like flipformac or quicktime pro. I don't know how hard or easy it may be to work with a converter and I am somewhat on a schedule so I opted for option #2.
2)Download Imovie HD 6 for free, create your project therein, and then export it to Imovie 8 if you wish. Imovie 8 has a tutorial on how to do this if necessary. To download Imovie HD 6 visit http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html.
I hope this helps and thanks again!

You can do this with a free app called MPEG Streamclip and a $20 quicktime component from Apple.

  • Sort iPhoto videos in iMovie from newest to oldest

    Hi,
I would like to sort iPhoto videos in iMovie from newest to oldest.
Any help would be much appreciate

i think the iMovie iPhoto window shows them in the same order that they are in in iPhoto, so you need to make them newest to oldest in iphoto. to do that open i photo View menu -> sort photos -> and check "By date" and "Descending" and that should do it.

  • Unable to play or edit iphoto videos in imovie '11

I recently upgraded to ilife '11 and I am unable to play or edit my iphoto videos in imovie. All of my non-iphoto videos play fine however the iphoto video thumbnails appear in imovie but don't play. I've isolated it to one computer (my iMac) because the same videos play fine on my macbook pro. I've been to the apple store and on the phone with apple care but we haven't been able to solve the problem. I've repaired permissions and rebuilt the iphoto library but nothing seems to work. I created a new iphoto library and imported some video into the new library and that also plays fine. Any suggestions? Do i need to create a new iphoto library and transfer all of my existing photos and videos into the new library?
    THX.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Did you rename or move any of those files from the Finder? If not then manually check and set the preferences on the iPhoto Library folder and contents as follows:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.

  • Can't import iPhoto videos into iMovie'11

    Hi
I just discovered that i can no longer see any iPhoto videos in iMovie.  I upprgaded to iLife'11 and to Lion. Not sure when the problem occured for the first time, i.e. at what upgrade.
iMovie does ask if i want to import iPhoto thumbnails, i select NOW but then when i got ot the event folder and select iPhoto Videos iMovie locks up with the beacjh ball, i go to Force Quit and it tells me iMovie not responding so I have to force quit. All highly annoying as I have video in iPhoto i want to edit and put together etc.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

Alright, sounds like a re-install of iMovie is in order, try ths:
Go to Mac HD > Library > Receipts > (look for iMovie.pkg) and move that to the desktop.
Got to Mac HD > Applications > iMovie.app (move that also to the Desktop
We're going to trick the Mac into thinking you haven't installed iMovie yet.
    Reboot the Mac.
Now go to the AppStore icon and launch that while holding down the Option key, when it comes up go to Purchases. With any luck it will let you re-download the iMovie installer and run the installer one more time.
After you run the install, reboot the Mac and hold down the Option key again. Choose the Recovery drive. And run disk utility>Repair Disk Permissions from within the Recover drive (instead of running it from the Utilities folder). When it finishes Repairing Permissions, reboot one more time.
Try launching iMovie and see if it can find the iPhoto Videos.
Plists are where all the preferences get written so for iMovie to locate where iPhoto Library is kept it needs to read that from somewheres. Therefore it gets written in the preferences, along with the locations of the videos inside iPhoto, the names of those videos, etc. That way iMovie can just look it up without you having to launch iPhoto to find the videos.

  • How do I get my iphoto videos into imovie

how do I get my iphoto video into imovie

1- on iphoto menu bar click FILE >> EXPORT and export it in ORIGINAL version to NEW EVENTS folder in MOVIES >> IMOVIE EVENTS >> NEW EVENTS
2- try to open the video you want with quicktime player.
IF IT OPENS WITH QUICKTIME PLAYER:
    - on imovie menu bar click FILE >> IMPORT and then import your movie. iMovie should convert it to a usable format which takes a few seconds and the your video will appear on the new event folder on the imovie screen (below "iphoto videos")
IF IT DOES NOT OPEN WITH QUICKTIME PLAYER:
    - download "MPEG streamclip" or "Handbrake" or any program to convert videos into mov. (i think that's the format quicktime player plays). Anyway, if you use MPEG STREAMCLIP, on the menu bar go FILE >> OPEN FILES >> open the file you want (remember it should be in the "new events" folder because you just put it there in step 1). The video will open on the screen.
    - still on MPEG streamclip, go on the menu bar and click FILE >> EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. This will convert the video automatically.
    - go back to imovie. On the menu bar click FILE >> IMPORT >> MOVIES and select your video from the new event folder.
This is what worked for me... I am no expert, it was all trial and error, but it worked in the end!

  • How to make iPhoto video clips appear in iMovie 11 under "iPhoto Videos"

I use photo camera to shoot both stills and videos these days. I would like to just see all my clips in iMovie.
I tried to use Import but it is very painful to use as iMovie PRETENDS it knows nothing about iPhoto photo library. So monkying around and drugging clips out of iPhoto "bundle" is huge hustle.
Is there is a streamline way?
Apple historically make hard to do, I even had to use iMovie HD and Handbreak to to all these conversion, but I just want things to work: I want to make a cool clip to share from my iPhoto library clips.
Is there is a easy way to do it?

Normally, any compatible clips in iPhoto show up in iMovie in the Events Library under the category "iPhoto Videos". You will see this item at the top of the list in the Events Library. Clicking on it will reveal thumbnails for each clip in the Events Browser (to the right of the listing). Are you not seeing this?
If this is not the issue, you could try converting the iPhoto clips by using a program such as MPEG Streamclip. If recognised by Streamclip, convert the clips to either H.264 or AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) and import the converted file into iMovie. Both these formats work well with iMovie - AIC is in fact the codec that iMovie converts AVCHD clips to in order to edit efficiently at the individual frame level.
MPEG Streamclip is a free program downloadable here:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
    John
PS. Regarding the conversion, I notice that you've already tried iMovie HD and Handbrake - sorry! Perhaps MPEG Streamclip will do this more efficiently.

  • Iphoto videos to imovie

I have videos on my iphone that are now in iphoto. How do I move them to imovie? I Selected file>import >movies and picked the album with the videos I wanted to import.  It appeared to show files being imported for about 1 hr but I cannot find them in imovie now.
From reading previous post I now know to import all movies into imovie to start with.  It sounds like others have had this problem too

    i'll tell u what i did...
    1. i movie asked to import video thumbnails of videos in iphoto, on first launch.
    2. i did that
    3. noticed dates on some videos were wrong
    4. deleted the thumbnails
    5. corrected the thumbnails in iphoto library
    6. opened i movie again.
    7. didn;t ask me to reimport them. there is no option to do that either.
8 mind u this doesn';t really import the iphoto videos but just creates thumbnails for them. so no duplicate copy.
    9. now it only asks me to import tbs of newer videos.

  • Can't find iPhoto videos in iMovie

I upgraded recently to Mavericks.  I also upgraded to iTunes 11.1.4.  I am running iMovie '09 (aka 8.0.6).  When I open iMovie there are no iPhoto videos (other than the projects I had previously saved).  I have seen some discussion of this with the most recent iMovie, but not with my version.  Any ideas how to fix this?  Thanks.

    Hi
To me it means that the problem might reside in one or both of two locations:
    • iMovie pref file got corrupted - trash it and try iMovie again
    • iPhoto LIBRARY needs a repair - Not to rare thing to happen to me.
the iMovie pref file is in the Library - IN YOUR USER ACCOUNT - not that one on root level (first window opening when opening Start up Hard Disk (Macintosh HD).
BUT keep alt-key down (option-key) and point to top row menu and GO. Down this You find the right Library.
Here You find a folder named - Preferences - and in this You find one or more files named
com.apple.iMovie.plist (or very close to this)
drag all of them out to desktop/finder When iMovie IS NOT running. Now try iMovie.
    the iPhoto Library repair:
THIS TAKES SEVERAL HOURS - to me about 24 hours ! and the Mac needs to be left alone (not running anything else - AND if a Lap-top - CONNECT Power supply ! - Battery will not last !
Keep alt-key and cmd-key (option-key and command-key) down during Full Up-Start of iPhoto.
    Now Select all presented options.
Now do something nice - for a long long long time.
    When done
    Close iPhoto
Open iMovie and see if the iPhoto movies are in the top Menu in EVENT's window.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Advice on my plan for importing iPhoto videos to iMovie

For the last several years, I've been importing both my iPhone movies and pics into iPhoto.  I'm wanting to move all my iPhoto movies into iMovie for better organization.
Over the years, I've not been a fan of the "iPhoto Videos" tab in iMovie (I'm still running iPhoto/iMovie 09 here).  Videos seem to go missing at times, and I like more specific events on my sidebar.
Here's what I'm thinking of doing after some research.  In iMovie, I'm going to File-Import-Movies.  Once there, I'm going down the sidebar to Media-Movies. Then I go into the iPhoto selection on the right and click on the event in iPhoto (I just arranged all movies/pics in iPhoto by Month taken).  Then, I select all the movies in that Event and Import over the iMovie.
This is where my first questions are - I'm given the option to "Optimize" and choose a size - "Full-Original Size" or "Large - 960x540".  My plan right now is to go with Full-Original Size.  Are there drawbacks to selecting Large as far as quality?
This question may not matter b/c right now, I think I want to "Move files" rather than "Copy Files"  If I move them, I no longer have the option of Large size or Optimization.  I can't figure out why I wouldn't want to just move them.  I don't won't two copies of the movie on my computer.  This makes sense right?
And if I move them, it removes them from the iPhoto section of the harddrive and puts them in the iMovie section, correct?  I've never quite understood the file management under the hood of iPhoto.
Thanks for any help/advice you can provide!

I am having the same problem.  I have posted bu no response.  I even went to settings to see if anything was wrong.  I thought there was a hidden date issue on my hardware but it is the same no matter what camera I use.  Any luck with a resolution yet?

  • Organizing iPhoto videos in iMovie?

My videos in iPhoto (Taken with a regular camera) show up in iMovie under "iPhoto videos".  I have several single videos all in separate iMovie rows in the event Libraty screen, even though they were taken seconds apart form each other. Is there some way I can put them all in the same row? SImilarly I have some rows that have videos from events separated by months that I would like to put into separate differently named rows.
While this is not a big deal, if I were able to organize them the scrolling down the iPhoto videos would be a lot easier.
    any ideas?
    roger

    Hi,
    can anybody help with this?
I tried adjusting a few "manually" but they just revert to the wrong dates the next time iMovie is opened even though iPhoto has the correct dates.
Also, I've gone through them all and not all of them are wrong.

How do I get video from my Canon DVD  camcorder to Imovie?

The second half of this file discusses moving files from an iPod to a computer:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
Videos are presumably in the "Video" rather than "iTunes" directory; you should be able to just navigate around in that directory for the file you want rather than replacing the entire directory as that article suggests (in which case you'd want to omit the "moving the directory to the desktop" steps, and so forth).

  • How to delete iphoto movies in imovie

    Hello,
I imported all of my iphoto movies into imovie and now I can not figure out how to delete them from the imovie event library. The import used 8GB of memory and I need the space. I searched the forums but I can't figure it out. All help is appreciated. Thanks

    Hello All,
I found out what happened. For some unknown reason, when I imported the movie clips into imovie they were copied within the iphoto folders. Before the import they were just in the Originals folder. After the import they were located in both the Data and Originals folder in the iphoto path. I was speaking to an Apple Care rep when we found them. At first he was sure that imovie would not copy thm and asked me why I thought that my disk space had been reduced by 8GB. I knew because I watched my free space dwindle during the two hour import and noted the space available before and after the import. He said that this was very odd and imovie should not have not have copied the files and he will report it to Apple. Thanks,
