How to reinstall Mac OS X

I am trying to use Boot Camp to get my recently purchased Windows 7 running but I was having issues with it. After doing some research I found out that it's because I need to format my HDD and the easiest free way to do this is to reinstall Mac OS X. So I used time machine to back up my HDD, and I was wondering how I go about reinstalling Mac OS X. My other question is should I use time machine to restore my info before I use Boot Camp or after?
Thanks for all help! =D

The error from Boot Camp means that it cannot find 50 GBs of contiguous space at the end of the drive in which to place the partition.
If it cannot, then the only solution is to defragment the drive. A simple solution if you have an external drive your can use:
1. Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive.
Source means the internal startup drive.
3. *Boot from the external drive*: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION button until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button. The computer should boot from the external drive.
4. Restore the Clone
Source means the external backup drive.
Destination means the internal startup drive.
Shut down the computer, disconnect the external drive, then restart. The computer will start from the internal drive with your old system all intact and the hard will be defragmented. Boot Camp Assistant should be able to make the 50 GB partition you want.

  • How to reinstall Mac OS X with dead hard drive and no DVD drive?

    Hey,
I need to reinstall Mac OS X 10.6 on my Mac Mini as my hard drive doesn't appear to be booting. However, I cannot reinstall it through the OS install DVD as the DVD drive is not working either. I don't have any other Macs on hand to help create a boot disk or something so does anyone else have any solutions?
    Thanks,

Your going to need a external blank (preferably Firewire 800) drive if your not capable of replacing your Mini's internal drive.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
Your going to need a external DVD drive, or use a friends Mac with one and follow these instructions to place 10.6 on a bootable USB thumb drive to install on the external or new internal drive.
    http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html
To boot from the external drive, hold the option key down on a wired keyboard and select it to boot from, set it as the Startup disk in System Preferences.

  • How to reinstall mac os x without erase boot camp?

Situation:Today, i was using mac os x this morning, it worked fine. then when i went home from work, start up the macbook pro, it took like 4-5 minutes to start the login, then take 30-45 secs, then the desktop starting to freeze!
Notes: I have Boot Camp on it.
Question: Can i reinstall mac os x without erasing the boot camp patition?
    Thank you to reply!

Yes, if you think it's necessary you can hold c and boot off the installer OS X disk for your 10.6 and simply reinstall OS X and bundled programs right over the previous ones without it touching your files or other programs.
However, you should take ANY opportunity to transfer your files off the computer (manually, not via TimeMachine) just in case there is a bigger issue afoot, like a failing hard drive.
You might also want to take a look at the free OnyX, run all the maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot.
Covers a ton of bases in one place.

  • How to reinstall mac os

hi, i have macbook pro early 2011 with having installed latest OX, i want to format my Hdd and reinstall os again to fix speed issues, can i able to install os free of cost again, or i have to buy it again, please advise me, thanks

Re-downloads under the same Apple ID are free. Just do the following:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How to reinstall mac os x server on mac mini 2011

    Hi
    i need to help
Can i Reinstall "Mac osx lion server "on my MACMINI 2011

Then you will need to boot to the Recovery HD partition included on the internal drive when Mt Lion was installed. To do that at startup hold down the Command+r keys and that will boot the computer from the recovery HD. Once that starts use Disk Utility to Erase the Macintosh HD partition. Once that finishes exit DU and select Reinstall Mac OS X and Mt Lion will be downloaded from the internet and whenn that finishes downloading the install will start. Have the Apple ID and password you used to originally install Mt Lion. And it is best to Wire the computer to your internet router, Ethernet cable from computer to router. You can use WiFi but if for some reason the WiFi drops out you will have to start over from the beginning with the Mt Lion download.

  • How to reinstall Mac apps from external hard drive onto Macbook

Last week I spilt wine on my 2009 Macbook6.1 and couldn't revive it so I brought it into the Mac Dealer in town and had it fixed. Gee! I just upgraded the external 250gb hard drive with a Hot Seagate Momentus 500gb hybrid SSD. well it wasn't too bad. Replaced some plate(forgive my lack off computer knowledge) of a sort and wiped everything down with alcohol including the new HD and all was good. Then the techy moved all of my personal stuff over to my LaCie external HD, wiped my internal HD clean and reinstalled Snow Leopard OS X. All done. When I got home with it and started it up I couldn't find the iLife app that it came with when bought new at Apple Store or iWork which I bought later at Apple Store and installed myself. I just bought and installed Lion OS X too. Right here and now I have my LaCie external connected to it and have no clue how/what to do to get iLife apps and iWork and other stuff back into Macbook. I need help. PS: how to check volume in Seagate hard drive?

There are basically two types of apps:
    - one category requires to run an installer, e.g. iLife or iWork, they cannot be moved from one place to another; there are apps which, even having an installer, they practically may be moved from one place to another without any problem;
    - apps which may be stored as such and moved to and external drive and back, and even may run from anywhere; most of Mac OS apps are like this.
If you want to backup your apps once purchased on CDs or DVDs, you may simply create images of them (dmg), and install them as if you had the CD or DVD. To have a backup of your apps is OK, and even recommended. This is how I store all my apps now, practically the optical drive is something I use extremely rarely.
If you purchased iWork via App Store, you may simpluy re-download them any time, by selecting apps and pressing Option / Alt key when selecting them, this will force a new download.

I understand, while you may have knowledge with PCs you don't have the diagnostic tools available to you to professionaly diagnose a Mac. Apple does not make those tools available for the general public, they are only available to Apple and AASPs. To install the OS on the machine you need to locate the original 10.5.x install disc that shipped with the machine and insert it into the SuperDrive. Below are Apples instructions for setting up the machine:
    Turn on the computer.
Insert the Mac OS X Install DVD into the optical drive, or insert the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive into the USB port.
    Restart the computer.
Press and hold the "C" key while the computer starts up. The computer will start up using the Install media. Alternatively, press and hold the Option key at startup to select the volume containing the installer.
If your are using a wireless mouse, a mouse icon should appear asking you to turn the mouse on so that the computer can discover it.
Select a language, then press the right arrow key.
Click the Utilities menu, the choose Disk Utility.
Select a volume to erase (usually called Macintosh HD).
    Click the Erase tab.
Click Erase... Important: This step will completely erase your hard drive. If you have installed Microsoft Windows using Boot Camp, or have multiple partitions, this procedure will erase the partition you select.
A dialog box appears asking if you want to erase the partition: click Erase.
After the partition is erased, choose Quit Disk Utility from the Disk Utility menu.
Part Two: Installing the operating system
When the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installer screen appears, click Continue.
When the license agreement appears, click Agree.
Select the disk you erased. It should now be highlighted with a green arrow.
Click Install. A status bar appears on the bottom of the screen while Mac OS X installs.
An Additional Information screen appears, advising you that you operating system has been installed. Click Continue.
An Install Succeeded screen appears. Click Restart.
Part Three: Completing the Mac OS X Setup Assistant
When the restart has completed, a welcome video plays, then country/region selection screen appears.
Select your country or region and click Continue.
Select a keyboard layout and click Continue.
A migration screen appears. If you wish to migrate your data from another Macintosh, see Migration tips and tricks. If you do not wish to migrate, or want to migrate later, select "Do not transfer my information now" and click Continue.
A Wireless Service screen appears if you have wireless services available within range of your computer. Select "On" and click Continue.
If the network is password protected, you be asked for a password when you select it. Type the password and click Continue.
An Apple ID screen appears. This is used to purchase content from the iTunes store. When complete, click Continue.
If you do not have an Apple ID, click Continue to move to the next screen.
A Registration Information screen appears. You are not required to fill this out, but it is helpful if you do. When complete, click Continue and your product registration will be sent immediately.
If Mac OS X servers are available on your network, you'll be asked if you'd like to log on to them. If not, click Continue.
A Create Your Account screen appears. This will be used to create a User Account with Login ID and Password for you computer. You should remember this password. You'll be asked for it when you install new software or perform other administrative tasks on your computer. When complete, click Continue and your account will be created immediately.
A screen to select your user picture appears. Take a snapshot with the built-in camera or select a picture from your Library. When complete, click Continue.
A MobileMe screen appears. Select an option and click Continue.
A Thank You screen appears. Click Go to complete the Mac OS X Setup Assistant.
Eject the Mac OS X Install DVD by dragging its icon to the Trash.
    Good luck.

  • How to reinstall Mac App Store on Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
after update to Mac OSX Mountain Lion I was not able to run App Store (it was still showing message "connection failed")...So I thought it was clever to uninstall it (with AppDelete) and then download it somehow and install it again. It wasn't.
I had even other small issues. Then I found out I can download the last update directly from Apple.com (OSXUpdCombo10.8.2) and it of course didn`t install App Store on my Mac. I also tried some geek stuff with Pacifist app and older combo updates..still not working.
I'm not IT talent...so PLEASE HELP ME.

Reinstall OS X Mountain Lion. Press Command and R keys on boot and reinstall OS X Mountain Lion

  • How To Reinstall Mac Xerox Drivers

I made the mistake of installing the Xerox Phaser 6360 drivers from the Xerox site. It caused long delays when trying to print - got the spinning beachball for up to a minute each time I tried to print. I'd like to reinstall the Apple Drivers.
I have tried to run the xerox pacakge app, alas there is no uninstall.
I have removed the Xerox files from /Applications and /Library/Printers.
When trying to reinstall the printer, I get the notification that software needs to be downloaded and software update runs, but then I get an error message about contacting the vendor - Xerox. I just want the Apple files to download.
Any thoughts on what I should do?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Apple doesn't have separate drivers. You could try setting up the printer using the Generic PostScript PPD. The spin is probably caused by something in the Xerox PDEs, so using the Generic PostScript PPD should get you around the problem, but you'll lose the Xerox-specific features.
    Hope this helps.

  • Any ideas how to reinstall Mac OS X 10.5.8 if it is not responding?

    Dear Friends,
Please I need your help, what can I do if my Mac is not responding, when I start up the only thing I can see is an Apple icon.
I have tried to use it`s dvd installer, restart and holding the button C or Option but still it is not responding, it restarts and restarts again.
I have tried everything, Command+option+P+R , but it also does not help. Don`t know what to do.
I shall be looking forward to hearing from you soon.
    Azizbek

If you have the original disk, you also have Apple Hardware Test on one of them (it is specified on it), restart, after chime press key C for forcing boot from that CD/DVD. If you cannot boot and cannot boot from any install disk, there should be other problems.
One method is to connect it to another mac using a firewire cable, and restart in target mode. If this works (press T after chime), you may see your mac’s disk mounted as an external drive on the other mac used as reference mac.
If this sound difficult to you, perhaps a tehnician may offer a solution, i.e. whether it is worth repairing it. If only the disk, this is banal and is worth doing it. If others, this depends on the issue.

  • How to reinstall mac app store

I currently have Mac OSX 10.5.8 and have been trying to update my software.  I haven't been able to make any updates because my Mac App Store seems to have dissapeared from my Mac.

That's right - once you're at 10.6.3, and run Software Update to get to 10.6.8, the App Store will be available.
Note that quite a few apps now require 10.8 or above, so depending on what apps you're after, you may need to update to 10.9 first (it's free) in the App Store if your computer can support it.
