How to reinstall old GB 1.0 (Yes, 1.0), or a workaround

I know this is gonna sound nuts, but I'm resurrecting my son's old G3 laptop just for GB use.
Original iLife install disc is damaged, and GB keeps crashing on launch. (System is 10.5.8.) I went to Apple Downloads and did all the 1.X updates, but it still keeps crashing right on launch. And even though this version is God knows how old, Apple doesn't seem to offer it as a fresh install for recovery. Also, I have a disc of dozens of compatible GB instruments. I looked for a GB PREFERENCES file to delete, but can't find one. (Ahhh--the good old days of System 9.)
I know--why not buy a new version? First, I've been unemployed forever, and I doubt it would run on this old machine anyway. My son has a new Mac, but being the poor father, I have a crappy PC.
I want to do what I did way back:
Take a midi file, and split it apart with Dent Du Midi (available ONLY for the Mac). I then bring that into GB and reassign the tracks with new instruments, and modify so I can play along with my guitar.
Does anyone have ANY idea how to get my GB running? Would it be SO illegal for someone to send me a dmg of 1.0?
If impossible, I could maybe use the Mac just to create my Dent Du Midi tracks, and then use a free PC editor to put it all together--but are there any good ones out there? And would my old GB instruments be compatible?

I think your memory is better than you think:
I never actually used GB on this laptop myself--I used it on my G4 desktop, which has been sitting dead with either a bad power button or power supply since dinosaurs walked the earth. My son might have tried to install it on the laptop way back, and with my recent installs, I've been using an 04 iLife disc, but I'm getting the damaged disc error. But I ASSUMED the disc was a match for it.
I started playing with Audacity and Anvil, and they're a nightmare--they ain't doing what they're supposed to be doing. Plus, way overkill.
The WORST thing about this is that you can't find forums for good information on these PC programs, to ask questions, because ALL of the sites are LOADED with malware. (The sites for downloading free apps too.) On my PC, I just had to do a system restore (going back in time two days), and it SEEMS to have cleaned it up so far, but what a nightmare.
So...
Is there anything on the PC side, SIMPLE and free, that will do what I need done? And if not, can I even still BUY a GB version compatible with the G3 laptop? I'm desperate.

Is there a way to reinstall or recover old apps no longer available in the app store from an old backup of itunes or something?

You're actually overthinking it. You have the backup of that app of your old HD, yes? On Vista, go to:
c:\Users\[Username]\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Mobile Applications
The tricky part is finding the app name, since you've forgotten it, but try to go with the obvious names first. "Colorado.ipa" etc. Try Appshopper.com's search feature, to possibly refresh your memory. When you've found it, make a copy of it, and install it on your new iTunes Mobile Apps folder. Click on it, and let it load. You'll see it in iTunes (if you're using the same account as before). Good luck.

How to reinstall old apps backed up using recovery mgr backup software

I crashed my machine after reloading some .NET framework files. Since windows no longer loaded, I used the HP Recovery disks and did a full backup to both DVD and USB of my hard drive. Then I went ahead and let the recovery disks reformat and reload the system to factory. I went to use recovery manager to re-install all those apps and files, but all it did was copy all the stuff to a folder on my C:\ drive. SO the dozen or so apps (quicken, genealogy, adobe paintshop & pdf, MS SQL) are not loaded. Yet it appears that my entire system is sitting in a file folder. Great if I only wanted data, but I really would like to use the apps without reloading it all from scratch. I did not find any executable files to start such a reload. I was happy with my machine before the crash, and if I could have done a simple recover to before I installed those files, I would have done so instead of the reformat. Alas, no matter how far back I went, windows was pretty much DOA.
I Have an HP Pavillion with win7.
Is this a lost cause?

The HP Recovery software only backs up a specific list of data file types and the folder they reside in. No programs were backed up and even if they were, they wouldn't operate correctly. You will need to reinstall all software that you previously installed.

How to reinstall old RAID system ?

Hello all,
I could use advice on software RAID on my G5. I previously had a pair of hard drives working in Leopard. I eventually upgraded to a single 1TB drive.
Now I want to go back and look at what is on those drives, but when I put the old drives back into the G5, the system just hangs up.
When I first turn the G% with the old HDs in the G5, it gives the grey Apple, goes to my login screen. I type in my password (it seems very sluggish typing) and then the login box disappears and it hangs up on the Apple starburst display.
I have a "Clean Account" (no applications or data associated with it" I still get the same starburst Hangup . I am out of ideas.
Does any have any thoughts why my old soft raid might not work anymore ???

So it should work. On bootable SATA ports.
There was an under the hood change to Apple RAID in 10.4.4 that primarily affected SCSI controllers (ATTO, Adaptec 39160, etc) mostly. Leo was 'messy' in many ways, the rules kept changing, 10.5.0 felt like it was incomplete and not ready at all. I ended up buying it again when 10.5.6 DVD came out.
It isn't like you are trying to mount these from 10.3.9.
I'd put OS X 10.5.8 on a small FW volume to boot from. Hope you have Disk Warrior to take a look at it.

I have the latest version of iTunes (6.0.4) installed but unfortunately, this version of iTunes does not play well with my network attached storage that is an iTunes server. I need to re-install iTunes 6.0.3 but the installer package is not allowing me to. I removed iTunes from my application folder and that does not help either. In the installer, all the installable packages are greyed out so there is no way for me to select them.

How do you reinstall OLD firmware 1.0.2 on VISTA

I have seen some links to reinstall old version of firmware but I can't find the relavant section on Windows Vista. I am new so could be me being stupid.
Any help appreciated.

Remove the latest update from the iTunes/iPod updates folder.
For Vista, I believe it's C:\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates.
Then prevent iTunes from checking the internet for a new update (preferences/general and remove the check mark from "check for updates automatically), then click restore. Or simply disconnect your modem from the computer.
You should then be asked if you want to use the previous version of the iPod software.

Apple doesn't sell the iLife apps on a disk any longer and Apple Care doesn't sell Apple software, the Apple Retail store does. The apps this "Apple emplyee" placed for free on your Mac are not the same versions of the apps that came preinstalled on the Mac and they are not the Mac App Store (MAS) versions. And they will not be udates by the MAS. You may be able to get updates through Software Update.
I doubt that it is a policy of Apple to have its employees installing the iLife apps from an old disk for free on 2nd hand Macs, so others trying to get this done may not be successful.

How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD. However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in
the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go
to Folder. In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.)
Click on the "Go" button ..... • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned. 20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk. 0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package. 0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
Extract or Install........
7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears,authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
11. Type in your password, click “OK”
Pacifist will begin to extract files.
12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
Notes: Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
• Stop
• Leave original alone
• Update .....
• Default selection
• Replace .... (Replace option should only be used on full install packages)

Toshiba must have or should have provided you with a CD/DVD and seril number with the machine. however, if PSe is freezing then the first thing you need to try is to reset it to default settings. This can be done in two ways but the easiest ay to do is to go to (I am mentioning only the one method here):
<C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\11.0\Editor>
Find the file called: Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 Prefs.psp and rename it to: Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 Prefs.old
For username you need to insert the correct username or Windows profile name. Also, when you are doing this, make sure PSE is closed completely i.e. you should not have it open to do any work.
I am assuming you know how to browse the relevant folders if they are hidden in the system because this is taken for granted here. Also, the file names may not have any extensions but I am sure you know how to make them display on the screen.
