    Option A.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Option B.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • How to reinstall osx and recover data?

    Hi
If I reinstall osx 10.6.8 after hd format, and later connect my time machine external drive, will I get back all my stuff? I mean data, docs programs and so on?
After having played with a linux install, I found partitions ex linux I don't know how to delete and reassign to the mac hd, so I think the easiest way shoul be a fresh reinstall.
    Thanks, Gianfranco

Thanks, my osx is already at 10.6.8. I had a lot of fun with Ubuntu, and even if I was warned about issues, wanted to try. I did it because some hardware will not be detected by osx. Afterwards decided to uninstall Ubuntu and switch to W7 for the above. Disappoint: ex linux partitions will not be removed by disk utility, and, more frustrating, Bootcamp does not allow to install Win because it finds that mac hd is not journaled. Of course is not: to be it expects a contigous volume, not parted. So, just to talk about my experience, mac architecture is very rigid, both in hardware management and software: it wants to decide where to store or pick data according to itunes philosofy (not mine) and, at the moment don't find any advantage respect Win/Linux exept a beautiful piece of furniture. Sorry for my complaints, you were very kind and gave me a helpful hint, but I'm starting to regret the iMac/iPad purchase.
    Thanks for all, Gianfranco

  • How to reinstall OSX on a computer that wont even boot up?

    Hey everyone
I have about a year old MBP that has suddenly stopped working. Whenever I try to boot up I get the white Apple screen with an endless spinning icon. It looks like its booting up fine, but it never leaves this screen. If I try to hold C with the install disc in, or hold T to enter firewire mode, the spinning just continues.
I gather that I need to reinstall OSX, but is there anyway to do that when I cant even boot up to choose a startup disk? I have a Powerbook (from which I'm posting on) if that helps at all.
    Thanks

Try a PRAM reset. Hold down Command-Option-P-R when booting until the tone has sounded thrice.

  • How to reinstall OSX with keyboard only or get mouse to work

    I am incredibly frustrated....
I provide support for about 15 Macs and I have never experienced this. I turned on an Intel iMac and could not get the mouse clicks to register. The right click would work, but not the left. This was the case for 5 different mice including the apple corded one.
I tried resetting the PRAM NV, etc....nothing
When booting and holding option, my choices come up and I am able to left click to choose the drive and arrow button. This is the ONLY time my LEFT mouse clicks work. Not in disk utility either.
Needing to format the drive and reinstall anyway, I went ahead the long way with the keyboard and erased the drive in order to make a fresh install, hoping that would solve my issue somehow. Well this would be great and all, but Apple decided to make this an absolute pain.
I can work my way through the reinstall screen using tab, spacebar and the arrows. However when I get to the drive options to install on, I can get the drive to have the selected outline but can never get it to highlight the "Install" button. At this screen, only the arrow keys seem to do anything.
I have searched for a couple hours now and am about to go crazy. Can anyone help with either the left mouse click issue, or how to choose the install drive with a keyboard only?
I need to go calm down now.....
    Thanks.

Well, guess it was that dumb. Yesterday, that was the very first thing I checked. All trackpads, bluetooth mice were pulled out and batteries removed.
Did another dig into a large box and found a "Magic Mouse" that had batteries from YEARS ago (of course in an upstairs closet). This mouse has never been used on this or any computer that I can think of.
Thanks for the nonsensical piece of hardware that no real computer user would subject themselves to. THEN, to have it connect randomly to other computers and highjack their mouse function? How about SOME type of indication that your little mouse has taken over? Too hard to foresee this? Solid programming and hardware development.......Apple, I hope you pick up my sarcasm on your imbolent product. I think my anger is about to let out on that little useless pos. Its magic all right, it can render a computer completely useless from 50 feet away. Send the NSA a million of em.  /endrant
Thanks for the push in the right direction Dominic, it works now.

  • How to reinstall OSX to a Mac without recovery partition?

I have a 2011 Mac Mini Server that I wiped (including the recovery partition) and installed Windows Server 2008 R2. I'm ready to decomission the device as the emergency database server it was and return it to an OSX machine. I've talked with Apple support and they have been unable to assist me. The last gentleman I talked to from Enterprise Support seemed to think I was out of luck. He told me to buy a USB of Lion and boot from it. This doesn't seem right.
Can I put the disk into target mode and install to that machine? Then it would be as simple as downloading the server software from Apple.
    Kind regards.

  • How backup User and reinstall osx only

My MacBook Pro (06 / 2009) running OSX 10.9 Mavericks didnt want to open completly this morning. 6 hrs later i havnt fix it. Reading and trying.
-- How to make a backup now ?
I want to save some création of mine. Last backup was 1 Month old on timemachine on external USB drive.
-- How to reinstall OSX without deleting my User files and maybe my applications Adobe ?
I have Osx 10.9 Mavericks on machine from free Apple update download. But computer came with 10.5.7 when order from Apple. Also bought 10.6 Snow Léopard  on CD.
-- What i have done so far
    Reboot. Reset. Pram. Safe mode.
    Single user #reboot
    Single user # /sbin/fsck -FN
Restart from installation CD to disk utility to verify disk
    Results : nothing
    Disk0s2: i/o error
Invalid sibling link. The volume needs to ne repaired.

I suspect it's a bad idea to boot from your Snow Léopard disk (even with the accent) to try to repair Mavericks.
You could see if your hard drive will mount on another Mac in Target mode: How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode , then you could backup your créations.
I would not backup anything more than your essential documents. If you restore system files, you will probably restore the problem.
If you haven't already: Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
    then restart.
if that doesn't work, you could try the recovery partition again and reinstall Mavericks over your current installation.
If you can't boot into your recovery partition, then try to boot into internet recovery: Hands on with Mountain Lion's OS X Recovery and Internet Recovery | Macworld , and use Disk Utility to repair your HD.  similarly, if that doesn't work, you could try to erase your HD from internet recovery and reinstall Mavericks.
if that won't work, you could try TechTool, which can occasionally fix a problem that Disk Utility can't. Techtool Pro 7
if that doesn't work, then your HD is probably failing and needs to be replaced.

  • Reinstalling OSX over Ubuntu

I installed Ubuntu a while ago, and for complicated reasons now wish to switch back to OSX. The problem is that I did not use rEFIt, and now am not sure how to reinstall OSX. When I insert the OSX Install Disk that came with my computer (Intel iMac) GRUB does not give me the option to boot to it, nor to a live Ubuntu USB.
    Any ideas?

You have to Repartition the drive as one partition and format it in the amac format and set the Partition table to GUID.
You can't install OS X Over Ubuntu. You have to wipe the drive of all traces of Ubuntu first.

  • Erased mac book pro (2009), how can i reinstall osx?  it won't recognize any old system disc

erased mac book pro (2009), how can i reinstall osx?  it won't recognize old system discs

    Did you try:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

If you don't have the original discs that came with the computer, then you can install the retail version of Snow Leopard:
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and

  • HT1338 I failed to re-install Mac OSX after I removed it while removing my personal info. I forgot my Apple ID & password at the time. I have now recovered them with my windows type spare computer. How can I reinstall OSX on my MacBook Air?

I failed to re-install the OSX on my MacBook Air after erasing my personal information in preparation to sell the computer. Reason: I forgot my Apple ID and password. I have recovered my ID and password on my wondows computer. There is no software on my MacBook Air right now. How do I re-install OSX?

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This will install the OS originally installed on your computer. If you plan to sell or give away the computer, then do not upgrade it or the purchaser will not be able to use it.
