How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.

    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
    • Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection

  • How to reinstall OS X Lion Server

I'm newbie os x admin . I bought new Mac Mini 2010 with Lion Server. I want to do RAID 0 with my HDD.
I make image for Recovery Partition. Then  format partition and do RAID 0.
I setup with Mac OS X Lion 10.7 GM build 11A511
I success to install but .... No Lion Server.
I try to check Mac Store but I found  I need to buy  Lion Server License ?
    These is my Question
    1.  Lion Server that pre-install with Mac Mini is not license version or not?
    2.  Should  I  restore from  recovery partition  and get Lion Server from them ?
    3.  How I make recovery DVD or anything that easy to reinstall ?
    Thank You very much.

The 2010 Mac mini Server did not come with Lion Server, it was shipped with Snow Leopard Server. To go from Snow Leopard to Lion is a paid upgrade, not a free update. Up until Snow Leopard there was a SL client OS and a SL Server OS. Now Lion Server is an add-on purchase to the Lion client. So you must buy and install the Lion client, then the second step is to buy and install the Lion Server add-on. You purchase both Lion and Lion Server through the Mac App Store.

  • HT5275 how to reinstall safari for lion?

I have deleted safari from lion and wish to reinstall.
Please advise how can i go about reinstalling safari?

    SINdustries wrote:
An alternative is to install ana application called pacifist which has a free trial
It can allow you to install small portions of the os
To use Pacifist, the OP will need to download the OSX, anyway, to access the .dmg installer. If that is the case, then the safest and most reliable course of action is to just reinstall the entire system, considering the complexity of Safari and it's integration with so many other parts of the OSX.

  • How to reinstall OS X Lion on macbook pro late 2011 ?

    Hello all !
I'm new here and pretty new to Macbook Pro had for just over a month now.
I baught it expecting it to be fast and good though I seem to be getting hard time doing simple stuff and having connection problems plus it slows down on me.
My family members have been downloading all kind of stuff and my MBP is pretty slow since then and wierd stuff is occuring.
I would like to reinstall Lion OS X to make as new agian since I think this solution only might help me here.
Though when I baught this MBP I didn't recieve any CD's with it as in basic OS X installations.
My question how am I supposed to reinstall my OS X and my MBP ? Please help me I am so fustrated because of this.
    Relevant information about my MBP:
    Macbook Pro 8,1 - 13" Late 2011
    Version 10.7.4
    2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Main issues:
Wi-Fi keep dropping and Safari is acting way to slow.
Invisible files appearing and are Visible on desktop such as (.DS_Store & .localized)
Many other gliches that prevent me copying simple stuff and closing Safari or tabs in Safari.
    Thanks to all in advance.

What do you suggest then ?
I suggest troubleshooting the problem instead of just guessing what has to be done. Since you're within 90 days of purchase, you're eligible for phone support from AppleCare.
Stop the secure erase. Quit Disk Utility and either restore from a Time Machine backup or run the Installer. You don't mention whether you have a backup. I hope you do, because otherwise your data is lost beyond any hope of recovery.

  • How to reinstall ical in lion?

I installed Lion on my mac, but ical wasn't working... i thought that i could delete it, and reinstall in from my leopard disc! wrong i couldn't, but how do i get it back?

Needless to say, you shouldn't have done that. You might want to find that Clean My Mac application and get rid of it.
You can get QuickTime 7 from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678
    ...but it's an old version.
To restore the modern version of QuickTime installed with Lion, you can first try to install the latest Combo Updater over your current installation:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1484
If that doesn't work, reinstall Lion.

  • How to reinstall os x lion after formatting the ssd.

I was trying to install Linux on to an sd card, but selected my drive with lion on it. The installation faild and I lost the whole os.
Just wondering if I should take my Mac into an apple store and see if that can reinstall the os.
    Thanks
P.S. My Mac is a Mac book air mid 2011, and is/was running os x 10.7.4.

If it shipped with Lion, or if you have installed the firmware update that was available through Software Update, then you should be able to hold down command-R at startup and boot into recovery mode over the Internet.  From there, you can reformat the hard drive and reinstall Lion.

I dowloaded OS X Lion Mountain and after that my computer needed another hard drive.  Now I have to install again the upgrade and I have no idea how to do it.  When I try the store doesn't let me.  What can I do??

Thank you for your reply but it didn't help.  I followed all the steps you mentioned but, for some reason when I go to purchase I am directed to the store and back and forth.  Nothing happen.  I try to see my history of purchase and it show nothing, however when I sign in in itunes it shows my account and I can see the charge for Lion.  I really don't understand Apple store.  They should be all conected together.  I really have no idea what to do next.  I even paid to have Lion in two computers and I cannot do that either.

I have a 2010 iMac and currently have OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.5 installed.
I would like to reformat and erase all information from my computer but don't want to go thru starting with Snow Leopard again with the original disks that came with the iMac.
I purchased Mountain Lion thru the APP store so do not have a disk for it.
Is there an easy way for me to reinstall a fresh copy of Mountain Lion and erase all content on computer?
    Thanks for helping...

    Hold down Command-R during startup,
From there use disk utility to erase the drive and reinstall OS X.

how can i get mountain lion reinstalled if my mac says apple id never purchased? hd failed 2 wks after wty expired, I am the original owner, put another hd in, done command-r & sys reinstalled, but it wanted to update & now am stuck. I don't mind paying for mountain lion; it is too far to get to an apple store. but, i only have one mac, so i cannot download with another mac. lots of other apple, but only one mac.

You will need to do a network recovery:
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    HI,
If you have any sort of Back up such as a Time Machine one you could "restore" it to the Applications folder if you know which date it last worked.
Other than that it is the Mountain Lion Restore process (Restart the Computer holding CMD and R)

Hello! Tried unsuccessfully to restore my MBP, running the Mac OSX Lion, to factory settings. I keep getting the "can't download additional components for the Mac OSX Lion" error when reinstalling the OSX Lion. Any tips on how to resolve this problem?

    Hi
Given that your answer to 1. is 'pre-installed' and 3. is 'No', I think the only thing to do is to take it to an Apple store (ideally the one you bought it from) and have them reinstall it for you.
The intended solution in cases like yours is that you should be able to reboot and install even a wiped disk by using Apple's servers over the internet (you do this by restarting with 'command-r' and choosing 'reinstall Lion'). However if this isn't working for you then you need to get the store to do it. Don't let them fob you off with 'go home and try again'. Have them do it in the shop (you're still covered by Applecare warranty so it should cost you nothing save the inconvenience of the trip and possibly leaving the machine there while they fix it).
A reinstall should leave all your own personal data and programs in place.
Note for future: when you get it fixed, first thing to do is buy a cheap external drive and start keeping a backup (either Time Machine or clone with Carbon Copy Cloner).
