How to remote screen share?

Hi- I have an iMac at home and when at the office, I have a Macbook Pro...
On my iMac I turned Screen Share On in the "sharing" menu in system preferences...
Now what? How do I "control" my iMac at home? Thanks!

Well I am certainly no expert on routers .... however.
My machines are also behind a router ( as you say 192.168.0.? ). This router has one main external IP address which is shared by all my machines via the router to access the internet. The package from my ISP however offered more that one external IP address (either 4 or 8, I cannot remember which) and these can be used to refer to specific machines on my network by 'tunnelling' through the router.
As this was setup for me however by someone much cleverer than I, hopefully someone else on this site will be able to provide you with more specific advise.

  • How can I 'screen share' from my Lion machine to my old Tiger mac?

    I have a new MacPro running 10.7.3.
I have an old Mac desktop running Tiger (10.4)
I can't seem to screen share.
I want to remotely control the old Tiger machine from my Lion one.
I checked 'Remote Desktop' on the Tiger- but still no happiness.
I CAN mount the drives from that older computer just fine.
    mark

Mark, sorry for any misunderstanding, CoVNC is only needed if you want to control the newer one with the old one.
    On the old one enable...
    Personal File Sharing
    Remote Login
    Apple Remote Desktop
    Remote Apple Events
On the ARD choice click Access Privileges and fill in what & who can do what.
Easiest to sign into the old one with the old one's username & old one's PW if you checked that as OK on the old one.

I believe what you are referring to is called AirPlay Mirroring. This article explains how to set it up and use it: OS X Mavericks: Wirelessly mirror your Mac screen to your HDTV

  • How to terminate screen share w/o losing iSight connection

After reading all the tales of woe on this Forum I guess I've been very fortunate. I have approx. 18 iSight "correspondents" (located from the UK to Hawaii) with whom I share lively A/V chats on a daily/weekly basis. Many are old friends/colleagues, most of us are retired.
I have but one problem. I can't figure-out (in Snow Leopard) how to end a ScreenSharing session w/o losing the entire iSight/Chat connection, at the point of clicking on the "circled X".
No "Help" that I've been able to find in HELP.
    Suggestions are earnestly solicited.

The reason you cannot find a way to do what you want is that ending a screen sharing session ends the entire iChat session.
iChat does not offer any way to change this behavior.
If you want to continue iChat after ending screen sharing, call back to establish another chat/conference session.

  • How can I screen share over ethernet?! Also DVD sharing?!

I contacted the complimentary apple 'support' to no avail. I just got a mac mini with lion 10.7.2. I have a macbook with snow leopard 10.6.8, both computers have just installed most recent updates. My goal is to get these two machines working in conjunction.
I have enabled screen sharing and it works, but very poorly. I have enabled DVD sharing, and it works poorly, very briefly if at all, before force quitting itself. I asked a gentleman in the apple store what was up with the lag, poor resolution etc. I experience with screen sharing and he said "it's the nature of the beat". He went on to suggest connecting them via Ethernet or another tangible connection. But how?!
I'm so frustrated I have called 'support' four times and not even progress has been made. Please help

Yes, that is an option and I appreciate the feedback.  However, I find Messages to be pretty useful for it's main purpose - bridging my iPhone messages with my MacBook - so I am hesitant to go back.
I tried looking into other options but Skype doesn't allow me to control the other person's screen and screen sharing, if I am understanding it correctly, seems tailored for people on the same network.
I tried setting up the VNC thing, but when I clicked the other users link it never connects.
Are there any options for people with different iCloud IDs on different Macs in different cities to connect for screen sharing assistance?

  • How can I screen share another users desktop on the _same_ macbook?

    Hi,
I'm trying to login multi-user into my own Macbook.
What I mean is, on my macbook start a session logged in as another user on my own macbook.
Using JollysfastVNC I can do this, but its terribly slow, like unusable slow. Tried changing the color depth and everything.
I tried both Mac and VNC authentication and VNC usally gets so slow it freezes, and Mac is very slow and unusable.
    How can I fix this?

  • Special Keys(Ctrl-opt-esc) in Screen Share no longer working after latest update

I typically remote into a machine back home through icloud once or twice a week to help my wife kill a program that can get stuck.  I used to be able to send command+opt+esc to get to the remote computers force quit applications window.  But now when I do that after the latest update, it only does it on my computer and no longer send the command to the remote screen share session.
Anyone else experience this or have a fix?
    -Dan

    (A) Try reset iPad
Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button down together until you see the Apple Logo.
Note: Data will not be affected.
    (B) Close all apps in the multi-task window
    1.Double-click the Home button.
    2. Swipe the app's preview up to close it.
    3. Preview will fly off the screen.

  • Could Troubleshoot a Mac Using Screen Share From 30 Km Away?

Hi. How far does Screen Share work? Could it be used to troubleshoot a Mac from another city or from a really far place?
Do you have full access to the other Mac using Screen Share. What can it do?
    Gbu.

It would be most accurate to say it works exactly as it would as if you were sitting in front of the actual Mac. For example, if you do something like install software and the other Mac asks you for the admin password for that account, and you don't know it, the installation will not proceed. But otherwise you can click and drag and type anything you want.
Screen sharing works a lot like the other "sharing" services on a Mac, it is primarily and most easily used on a local network, but there are ways to use Screen Sharing across the Internet. They are the same ways as for any other network sharing service, which is, you have to know the IP address of the router that the Mac is behind, and there must be a port open the router to let outsiders in who know the password, and then you tunnel through to the actual Mac you want. You can look up Mac screen sharing over the web in Google.

  • Screen Share - How does one lock the remote computer screen?

Using Screen Share in Lion I am unable to lock the remote users screen.

I use JollysFastVNC as my local client, and remote screen lock used to work with Snow Leopard.  They have a note on their website that it doesn't work with Lion, when I try it kicks me out of the session.
I wonder if Apple removed this feature and reserved it for Apple Remote Desktop?

  • How to remotely "wake up" a Mac in order to screen share in iChat?

Apologies if this is not the right forum for this question.
I help my mother-in-law (81yrs) to maintain her computer (upgrades and all non-daily activities that she does not want to bother with) by remote Screen Sharing through iChat. This now works quite well.
However in order to screen share, her computer must be constantly ON, i.e. not be in sleep mode. Is there a procedure which would allow her computer to be turned into sleep mode after a certain amount of inactivity, but then be "woken up" remotely in order to do screen sharing?
Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/pointers.
    Cheers from the Austrian mountains.

    Thanks, Andy.

  • No Video, No Screen share, No idea how to use it.

I have only ever used iChat to msg back and forth with friends overseas. However, in the last few years I have converted my whole family to Apple and they want to start video chatting. I have read countless discussions and maybe I'm not looking in the right area because really I have no idea how to look for an answer when I not sure what the right question is.
So here is my question. How do I set this thing up? I do not know that much about routers and ports and all that but I will list what I have and maybe someone can help me out. I as well as the rest of my family have iChat4.0.7 and Running 10.5.6 for the OS. I am hooked up to the internet via wireless router Lynksys WRT350N. I know how to set the router up so that it's not broadcasting it's name and so it has a hefty password but that's about it. When it comes to ports and know where to type in TCP 5190, 5220, 5222, 5223, 5298 or UDP 5190, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678, 16393-16402 I have no clue.
I log onto ichat via AIM and Google. For my Google it is connected to talk.google.com for the server out port 5223 and use SSL is checked as far as AIM the server it slogin.oscar.aol.com port 5190 and use SSL is checked.
By the way I can share screens with my wife in house on the same router but not otherwise.
I used to be able to share screens and log onto my edit suite across town when I had to remotely help another editor but now when I bought my new MacBook Pro I can not do that anymore. This might be a completely different topic that should be listed under a share screen discussion board... not found that one yet.
If more information is needed please let me know and I would be glad to give what I know to fix this. It really should not be this hard but for me it seems to have stumped me really good.

    Ok,
There are different methods of opening ports or allowing applications to use ports in a modem or router.
AS you want to Screen Share then it would be best to use UPnP (Universal Plug n Play).
Te Linksys will have this in the Adminstration page of it's set up page s that you can access in a web browser.
Use these Instructions only as far as gaining access then go to the Administration page/tab.
    Enable UPnP
Go to the Security tab and Allow it to Respond to Anonymous Pings
Lets us know when you have done that.

  • How can I use screen share of my mac mini?  Problems validating

I recently purchased a mac mini to act as my home media server for audio as my airport express was not playing nicely with my Peachtree DAC.  Anyway, I have set up sharing on the mac mini and can't figure out how to connect from my wife's Macbook, or her iPad.  (I use a PC, so would welcome advice if available on how to connect across platforms as well.)  My goal is to set up the mac mini without a monitor or keyboard connected to it and have it sit with our main stereo.
I am able to connect to the mac mini via my wife's macbook IF I ask for permission and I grant it from the mac mini.  However, I am unable to connect no matter what I try if I try to log in as a registered user.  I have tried to add her as a user to the mac mini, I have tried to log in as a guest, and I have tried to log in with a password but no matter what I try, I get an authentication error when I try to log in as an authorized user.  For more clarity, here is what I have tried:
    1.  Added authorized users on the mac mini.  I created a user name for "jeff", "maureen", and "lastname_maureen" on the mac mini and provided a password for each user.  "jeff" and "maureen" are just created on the mac mini, and "lastname_maureen" is the user name of my wife's computer.  I confirmed the passwords, and still am unable to connect.  I have allowed any user on the network to access screen share, and no matter what I do I get an authentication error.  Again, if I attempt to log in from my wife's computer by asking permission, it works fine but I can't figure out how to set up an account to login.  Please help.  Thanks!

Have you tried connecting one to the HDMI output, and another to the Thunderbolt port (with the appropriate Mini DisplayPort-to-other connection adapter as needed)?

  • IChat 4.0 - Share Remote Screen - "Slow Network" Problem

The iChat Connection Doctor shows that I don't have the capability to "Share Remote Screen" due to "Slow Network." I am able to have someone else share my screen, but not the other way around. The "Ask to share users screen" option is grayed out. I've tried it on two different cable modems, which are not slow. Does anyone know a fix for this?
    I'm running a 867 MHz PowerPC G4 with OS 10.5.1.
