How to remotely "wake up" a Mac in order to screen share in iChat?

Apologies if this is not the right forum for this question.
I help my mother-in-law (81yrs) to maintain her computer (upgrades and all non-daily activities that she does not want to bother with) by remote Screen Sharing through iChat. This now works quite well.
However in order to screen share, her computer must be constantly ON, i.e. not be in sleep mode. Is there a procedure which would allow her computer to be turned into sleep mode after a certain amount of inactivity, but then be "woken up" remotely in order to do screen sharing?
Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/pointers.
Cheers from the Austrian mountains.

Thanks, Andy.
In another forum http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1340923&tstart=0 we found perhaps not the ideal solution, but a workable one.
Cheers,

How can I set up my Mac for two users to share photos, music etc?

On the Mac with the libraries you want to share:
iTunes Preferences click on the Sharing tab and put a tick in 'Share by library on local network'.
iPhoto Preferences click on Sharing and put a tick against 'Share my photos'.
When launching the same apps on other Macs on the network the libraries should be available, listed on the left.

  • How can i remotely connect to my mac without sharing my screen

    Hi,
I have a Mac at work to which I occasionally connect from another Mac at home. Now I would love to export the applications similar to Linux where I just set the display to another device. Alternatively, I would also use screen sharing if the remote Mac's screen would not turn on and invite everybody around to follow my work (i.e. the workstation should either stay locked, similar to when connecting to a Window machine with MS Remote Desktop) or it should remain blank.
I am using the latest version of Snow Leopard on all machines.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    equinox

    TO JAISEN.....
not necessarily, every "computing" device (imac, TC, AEBS, pc) has its own separate set of ports. There is a way to achieve what your trying to do as I'm trying to accomplish the same thing, i have not fully gotten it working yet as i'm restricted to my network so any changes i do, i cant test till i go back to work and use their pc. So let me figure out my way and if i get it working ill tell you how i did it (looking for an alternative to mobile me). But back to your question. I'm going to explain the config settings in airport NAT forwarding. Just remember you imac has to have a static IP.
public udp port: "any port you want to use"- 3032
public tcp port: "same port as above" - 3032
private IP address: "the satic IP of you iMac" - 10.0.1.???
private udp and private tcp: 548
    that would be equivalent to
    "your-external-ip":3032
the way this works is that you router will take those port (3032) and know that you want to access the the port 548 on your imac ( the private ip),, basically the port 3032 is a substitute for port 548 on you imac.
I hope that helped, maybe you can help me.
I'm trying to access my airdisks remotely. im using that free dns thing, i thing its called dynDNS, and it works %100 as I use it to remote monitor my torrent downloads (transmission with clutch), so at work if i go to my server , i can access the remote torrenting easy because it works through the web browser, but i dont get how to access my airdisks. what do i need to do in windows to access is what im asking???
if you dont mind, i could email you my web address ( im kinda cautious of posting it) and maybe you can test it for me. Do you have a windows pc??

  • How to remotely log into another Mac in a different state?

My Uncle owns an older Mac Pro running 10.6. He's new to Mac, so from time to time he calls me and asks me questions. I thought it might be easier to log onto his computer remotely and do what he needs to do, or show him - as he watches me - how to do things.
He's in NC and I am in FL. We tried to remotely connect earlier today, but had no luck.
All the tutorials out there say to go into System Preferences/Sharing and check both the Remote Login and Remote Management... but as I try to connect using the address it says to use, I cannot connect. I wondered if by some chance if the IP is wrong?
Can someone walk me through how to do this, and I mean very detailed instructions, cause we are both at our wits ends.
    Thanks!

Screen sharing that way only works over a local network, unless you do quite a bit of extra setup. You should use screen sharing via Messages/iChat.

  • How do i wake up a mac book air when in power nap mode?

Simply hitting a key doesn't work to wake up my macbook air when it is in the power nap mode. When the screen is dim, moving the touchpad or clicking any key works great, when the power nap kicks in, its a pain to wake up.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You can disable power nap from System Preferences:Energy Saver.

  • How do I see my two Macs on the same screen?

This may sound like an extremely stupid question but if I want to use Migration Assistant, how can I see what's going on on both computers when I have only one screen?  I have an old Mac Mini and a new Mac Mini.  I've hooked them up using an ethernet cable.  Am I supposed to be able to see the old hardrive on the new machine?
If I am supposed to hold down the letter T, do I do that just before I turn on the old Mac?
I think it may be simpler just to copy the files I want onto a thumb drive and do it manually.
I'm sure there's a very simple step I'm missing.  I even tried watch instructional videos on youtube but can only see instructions on how to do it when you have two screens---a laptop to a desktop, laptop to laptop, etc.
I'd appreciate it if someone could help me with this.
    Thanx.

I've never used Migration Assistant, but I'd suggest you get to the point where Migration Assistant asks you if you want to pull data from another drive, then connect the old Mac mini to the new Mac mini by Firewire, and boot it using Target Disk Mode (holding 'T' like you said).  The most you'll have to do is move the keyboard from the new Mac mini to the old one temporarily.  Migration Assistant should then recognise the boot drive on the old mini and you can proceed.

  • ICloud & back to my mac - is this a screen share issue?

Since installing Lion a few weeks ago on my Macmini (to help me fully upgrade / migrate from MobileMe to iCloud)  I've have a couple of issues which are bugging (no pun intended) the life out of me. I'm almost at the point of doing a complete erase and install of Lion it's that bad. Normally I always do an erase and install when upgrading OSX but the setup of my mini is such that it would take me a long time to rebuild it from scratch. That'll teach me.. I just upgraded Lion on top of Snow Leopard, whereas on my MBP I did a clean install of Lion and no problems.
    Here's my issue:
On serveral occasions, whilst using back to my mac, to screenshare my mini on my MBP, I've had windows and hard drives disappear off screen. If I do a right mouse click on my finder I can view the windows on screen but when I select them they disapear. I have a feeling that mission control is doing something, but I never use this, nor do I have anything set-up, other than the intial configuration. This is *really* doing my head in. I can usually fix it by changing the screen dimensions on my mini through the Display control panel or switching my TV over to the hdmi input so I can view the desktop directly on my TV (as opposed to screensharing).
I'm not really sure if this is a problem with mission control, or back to my mac, or a video input problem (I'm using a mini displayport to dvi and dvi to hdmi cable to connect the mini to my TV).
Any troubleshooting suggestions very much appreciated.
    VP

If you have a VPN installed (by mistake?) you should be able to go to your System Prefs > Network and see the VPN listed in the left hand column along with Aiport and Ethernet. You can un-install by using the minus button at the bottom of the column.
The link provided shows you how to install a VPN client with screen shots, including one of this Network Prefs screen and what a VPN client looks like.

  • Apple Remote Desktop to wake up a Mac

    Hello,
Do you know how to use Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) to wake up a Mac which is not on my local network?
Imagine I am in the USA and I need to wake up my Mac in France to see my files, play some music... Is it possible? ARD can do it?
Or should I prefer another program like WakeOnLan by ReadPixel, or the Depicus page...?
Do I need an IP address, a MAC address and to configure my router to accept the correct "wake" packet?
I know the Mac needs to be connected with Ethernet, and "Wake for network access" has to be checked in the Energy Saver panel.
In case it works, can I shutdown my Mac with ARD too?
Maybe you would suggest to use ARD to wake up the Mac then use FTP to see my files, read some music...
The thing would be to use the Mac as a server I could connect with from anywhere in the world to see my files, play music and more...then shutdown it when I finished. Am I dreaming?
    Thank you for your help.

    Thank you for your information.
I found another topic here : Wake-On-Lan support?
The member el_migu_el wrote something interesting I think.
Basically, it seems Apple Remote Desktop is designed for local network only. When we need to wake up a Mac through the Internet, ARD shows its limits and we have to find another tip to make this thing possible.
Maybe I am wrong but it seems easier to wake up a PC (with Linux OS) through the Internet than a Mac.
I was thinking to another solution :
Would it be possible to configure the Mac with the Energy Saver panel to make it wake up on a specific day at a specific hour (then shut down it in the same way), and use a FTP connection to access our shared datas? It would mean applies like Pure FTPd Manager should run after the Mac woke up, and it would be necessary to configure a static IP address with the DynDNS service for example to avoid any IP changes to still get the conection with the Mac.
And obviously we would use some applications like Cyberduck or FileZilla to access our shared datas. The problem is that we couldn't use our Mac as a server, I mean use it to launch some music for example from anywhere in the world.
I had a friend who had used is old PC (with a Linux OS) as a server to share some music we could hear on our computer. With an address he gave we could see the music he shared. It was cool. The thing was his PC had to be switched on all the time. But I am sure we could have woke up his computer from anywhere to get access to his music if he had configured his PC in that way.

I am having a macbook pro with retina. How do I use an apple tv remote to control my mac?Is there a way. For eg. if I want to control the volume using the remote how do I do?

No, the iPad has no IR receiver. (I think you mean "Airplay" and not "Airdrop", by the way.)

  • How to enable Remote Management on multiple Macs using Workgroup Manager?

    Hi
I want to use workgroup manager to enable remote management on multiple macs I manage.
    How can I do that?
    Regards,
    Omer Barel

The only way I know to enable remote managment remotely is by running kickstart.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2370
If you are already using a login script you could run kickstart from there.
We clone our Macs with remote management turned on.
    Otherwise, lace up your sneakers.

  • How to remotely control my Mac at home?

I'm at work on a Mac Pro.
I want to control my iMac at home.
Both of the Macs are running OS Lion (10.7.5).
I just bought Apple Remote Desktop software.
How do I connect & control my Mac at home?
    Thanks,

You need something different since Remote Desktop only works on the same network. You were not clear.
    You need one of these:
Set up and use Back to My Mac - Apple Support
    Commercial products like
    TeamViewer, free for non-commercial use
    LogMeIn
    GoToMyPC
