How to remove hard drive to create external back-up drive

All,
I have an old Powerbook G4 that has seen better days... I'd like to take the hard drive out of it an make myself an external back up drive.
Has anyone done this?
Lindsay

That should function just fine, with one possible exception. Some very old 2.5" HD's were up to 12.5mm tall (and now at least one of the newest high capacity/300GB drives is over 10, but you don't have to worry about that in your case), and as the specs for this particular case state, it can accept a max height of 10mm. I don't know if Apple ever used 12mm drives in TiBooks, but I don't think so. Even my older Pismo HD is 9 or 9.5mm.
And from your OP, it sounds like you're retiring the TiBook and using its HD as backup for your new MB, which has USB2, so as you say, speed shouldn't be a concern in that situation.

  • Satellite A30 - how to remove Hard Drive

    Hi, New Here...
Can anyone tell me how to remove the hard drive in my Tosh A30...
    Thanks

    Hi Tim,
The hard drive on your SA30 is underneath the optical drive so you need to slide the optical drive out of its slot (undo the screw marked F5 on the bottom of the notebook).
The hard drive will then be visible fastened in with four cross-headed screws which must be removed (two on each side of the hard drive. With the screws removed, carefully slide the hard drive towards the front of the notebook to disconnect it from its connector and carefully lift it out of its bay.

  • How to remove hard drive password on a Portege M400-170 ?

    Hi,
I've read a lot of things in this forum, in the user manual, I even phoned the support Toshiba and i've still no answer to my problem.
At the first use of the PC, i defined a hard drive password. I now want to remove this password.
The user manual and the forum advise me to open the bios configuration, under windows, wich is supposed to offer the possibility to change and remove password. No option, no possibility to change nor remove the password.
The phone support tell me that if the bios configuration under windows do not show the option to change or remove password, I have no way to do this (!!?!).
I need your knowledge and your help :)
    I thank you in advance.
    Thomas (sorry for my english)

I understand this sentence in the context of "If you forget your password".
I have no doubt you are right but i still search because some informations let me hope it's possible ;-)
In fact, i think this hdd password prevent me to restore my system with, for example, Norton Ghost (when i boot on the restore cd, i can not see my hdd)...
Perhaps it's another problem, i don't really know.
    Your opinion ?

If you have Lion installed, and run Boot Camp, it will create the boot flash for you, just followe the tutorial on screen. As far as I remember, this was not possible prior to Lion.

  • How can I save my photos on a removable hard drive for easy viewing?

I just got a brand new Macbook Pro and I wanted to transfer some of the photos from my old computer over to my new computer (from a My Passport removable hard drive), but I found that this wasn't possible with how I had saved then with iPhoto.  I now have all of my photos on my new computer, but don't want to waste all that space.  How can I save the photos I don't want on this computer to my removable hard drive for easy viewing?  When I look at the removable hard drive now, it's saved altogether as iPhoto Library, so I can't just see certain ones...

While in iphoto, hold down the command key and select all the pics you want to move. Once all the pics are selected, release the command key and select export from the file menu. Iphoto will present a dialog box where you can select the quality of the pics before exporting. Then export them to whereever you would like. If you want to put them on an external HD then select that. When you wish to view them, you can use preview or right click on any pic and choose which program to open them with. After doing this if you no longer want them in iphoto then delete them and make sure to empty the trash in iphoto after doing so.

  • How to copy files from a removed hard drive

Hi removed my hard drive from my Dv9408nr laptop because the screen won't power on, and but my question is there a way to copy the files from my removed hard drive to another laptop. Is there a cord the fits into the hard drive connector slot to a usb or some other cord that goes to a laptop so I can copy my files to another laptop, so I can recover my files?

    Hi,
Something like this should work and you can have an external HDD at the end

  • Moving Photos on removable hard drive

If I have my photos on a removable hard drive and must re-install PE-8. Will my catalog including tags still be intact?

Glad you had success. You can check to see how many preview files have been built by checking the Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata folder with File Explorer:
    /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata
Right-click on the folder and select 'Properties.' Next to 'Contains' will be the file count representing the number of built previews. It should be the same as the number of pictures (100,000) or slightly more.
Creating previews for 100,000 image files will take a long time! My Windows 7 i7-860 processor system with 21 mp Canon 5D MKII raw files takes about 3 seconds to build one standard preview. Using this number for 100,000 previews:
    100,000 x 3 seconds = 300,000 sec. = 5,000 min. = 83 hours = 3.5 days!

  • Moving my itunes library to a removable hard drive.

I have moved my itunes library to a removable hard drive.  Every time I try to trash my old itunes file and access the removable HD, I cant find it from iTunes.  the only thing I can get it to do is to reload (duplicate) the entire 30gb library on the HD I want it off of.  Now I have 2 duplicate versions of my library, but still can't get it to keep the files on the HD.  Can someone help?
    Mark

    Hey Mark -
I think it's helpful to understand how this whole process works, and along the way, maybe we'll find where things went wrong for your situation.
iTunes can take as much or as little control of your library as you like, and different settings may be turned on or off for you as it's not always standardized.
If you'd like your entire iTunes Library to be transferred to one centralized, organized location (wherever - a local directory or an external drive, whatever you like), here's what you need to do (and if it's not too late, here's what you need to go "back" and do to make this transition smoother).
    - Open iTunes with the default library (where you had it).
    - Select iTunes, Preferences, Advanced, and ensure that "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" are both checked. This ensures that your music files are actually going TO the iTunes folder (and not, for example, just being referenced in a downloads folder which you'll probably move or delete later, breaking all those links) and that iTunes will sort your media by Artist\Album\Track Number Song.xxx instead of just moving the file as-is to a different spot.
    - Select File, Library, Organize Library and check "Consolidate files" and "Reorganize files in the folder 'iTunes Media'". These two marks take anything up-to-this-point and consolidates them into the one location, then uses its sorting structure to file it all away.
Then, Mark, I think it's appropriate to exit iTunes, take that entire library folder (YourUsername\Music\iTunes\) and put it wherever you'd like it to go. To tell iTunes where your new library is, hold the Option key and click on the iTunes application, then "Choose Library" and reference your new location.
I think it's important to follow the preliminary steps first. I've run into instances with customers where they've moved their Library file, referenced it by Choosing the new Library, and then thought everything was fine, only to find two weeks later when they try to play an audio file that the file isn't found - and this happens because the user moved the library FILE but didn't have a consolidated library TO move - the files were spread out all over the computer.
I hope that's helpful to you. I know it may be too late to "undo" yourself back to the beginning and do those organizational steps, but it's at least useful to know the process and how it might help you in the future.
    Best of luck.

As I have a laptop, the laptop has become slow due to my purchased being stored on it. I have a removable hard drive, so is there a way I can move my purchased to the removable hard drive and also to set-up itunes to automatically save future purchased to the removable hard drive.

How do you know that is the reason it has become slow? Unless your hard drive is getting very close to full, having songs on it is usually not a problem.
I have a removable hard drive, so is there a way I can... set-up itunes to automatically save future purchased to the removable hard drive.
Well if you really want to, repoint your iTunes Music folder to the removeable drive by going to Edit > Preferences > Advanced.
Once you do this, never start up iTunes without having the drive in place, or it will default back to the local drive and leave you with a chore.

how to wipe  hard drive bc selling computer and want all passwords/personal info gone?

You need to boot the computer from another source, e.g. a CD or an external drive. Then run Disk Utility, select the drive you want cleaned up, and run Erase. Note the security options: "write zeroes" will erase the drive completely.

  • Transfer application from removed hard drive

After replacing a failing hard drive; I need to transfer applications from removed hard drive to newly installed hard drive.  What is needed to do so and what is the best method of tranferring applications?  Thank you.

So the drive that was failing s still working enough to mount, that's good. Purchase an external enclosure or a dock to mount the OS drive on the desktop. In your Utilities folder open Migration Assistant and select to migrate your applications "from another disk". Follow the prompts and let it do it's thing. MS Office applications haven't worked for me after migrating but a simple reinstall of Office took care of that. While you're at it you can also migrate any documents, photos or music from the old drive before it completely dies.
