How to remove installer prompt at shut down?

Talking about a MacBook Pro running 10.9.5.   Something I  brought on myself.  I downloaded an installer for an app and began the installation, but changed my mind, canceled the installation and removed the app, installer and associated files.  However, now at shut down I get a prompt with an installer icon asking if I want to abort installation or not.  Choose abort and the computer shuts down.  Choose "Yes" to continue the phantom installation and the system looks for the missing app then shuts down.  How can I remove this prompt?  Thanks in advance.

When you restart or turn off your Mac, OS X is set to automatically open the apps that were opened when you turned it off, so this could be the reason why the installer always pops up during shutdown.
To avoid this, uncheck "Reopen windows when logging back in" in the shutdown or restart window, or start in safe mode once (hold the Shift key while your Mac is starting up) and restart. This should fix the issue.

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

  • How to get rid of annoying Shut Down prompt

That's right. I finally have an answer and not a question.
If you want to get rid of the prompt, "Are you sure you want to shut down?", hold down the option key while you choose shut down from the Apple Menu.
I found this tidbit in the book Mac OS X Conversion Kit. It compares, on one page, OS 9 options, and on the opposite page the OS X equivalent. It's a good quick reference guide, and I got it free from the library.

Want to shut down without even touching the mouse? Press CommandOption+ControlEject. If you have any applications open that need a document with changes saved, you'll get to do that first. Otherwise, it will immediately power down.

  • My MacBook frequently prompts to shut down. How can I stop this?

I have a MacBook 1,1 running on Mac OS X 10.6.8. Every few minutes or so, a box pops up asking if I want to shut down. How can I stop this?

What version of OS X are you using?
    If it's Lion, OS X 10.7, there's a couple of possibilities -
    * Right-click or Control-click on the Word icon in the Dock; in the popup menu that appears, look in the Options submenu, If the item "Open at login" is chckmarked, select it to uncheck it.
    • If you leave Word running when you shut the machine down or restart it, and do not uncheck the setting to auto relaunch running apps at startup, it will be started again automatically.

  • How do I prevent windows from shutting down ITUNES with a Data Protection Execution error when trying to sync with my Iphone 4S in a 32 bit windows environment?

I first was not able to install ITunes 10.5.  Apple upgrade installer caused a data protection execution error and windows reverted the process back to the original software.  I then removed ITunes through the control panel ap.  I removed Bonjour and quicktime.  I could not use the windows uninstaller to remove the apple upgrade installer and had to find a fix it program on the microsoft web site to fully remove this program.  After doing this, I was able to load and install itunes 10.5.  However, now when I try to sync my new 4S phone, the sync only goes to the 2nd or 3rd step before eliciting a DPE error and causing itunes to shut down.  I tried making a new user profile.  Opened I tunes in the new profile and began to search for music on my computer.  The program again elicited a DPE error.  I looked to see if quicken was still on the computer and maybe causing a hangup, but it is no longer installed.  Ok, I am at wits end and have spent much too much time on this issue.  Please help.

I was able to finally stop ITunes from crashing after many days of searching n restarting my computer many times.
    a) First I went to this site ->http://forums.techarena.in/guides-tutorials/1119812.htm that showed me how to disable DPE. Please make sure that u have good virus...etc.. protection first before doing this. I have Avast Internet Security. RESTART UR COMPUTER..
    b) I then uninstall ITunes by following this site ->http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923      RESTART UR COMPUTER..
    c) I then downloaded a beta version of ITunes. I happen to download beta 7 before the final of 10.5 version came out. Installed it. After installing I click on it n it said somewhere along the line of "this ITune ver. expired" I checked in my Programs n Features n notice that QuickTime was installed w that beta version.
    d) Go online n download the final version of ITunes ->http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ ...... After u finish dling install that. After that's done connect your IPod, IPhone...etc... n click on ITunes, it should sync all the way.
I was finally able to sync all thru the steps insteading of it crashing on me midway. Hopefully this will work for you. Good luck !

  • How to Remove Shutdown Prompt

Is there any way to either 1) completely remove/disable the prompt that appears when selecting Shutdown from the Apple Menu or 2) reduce the time before it automatically shuts down? It's not a big deal, but when I hit shutdown, I mean shutdown, not "double-check" or question me for 60 seconds. I know it's automatic, but if it is removable, that is my preference. Everyone seems to be asking about the checkbox (reopen windows on relaunch), but I would rather completely skip this step. Thanks in advance.

You can use the AppleScript Editor app to shut down the computer without prompt.
Application folder... Utilities folder... AppleScript Editor... New Document.
    Paste this into the window:
    tell application "Finder"
      shut down
    end tell
Save... File Format... Application. Save the file for example to your Document folder. Best to place the file into a folder. Drag that folder into your doc (right hand side of the doc) ...
Click on the folder in the dock... click on the shutdown file.
If you don't put the file into a folder... drag the file to the dock (left hand side of the dock) right click on the file... option... keep in dock. (Caution: by accident you could shutdown your computer, saving/using the file this way. Best to put it into a folder as explained above.)
    Sleep:
    tell application "Finder"
    sleep
    end tell
    Restart:
    tell application "Finder"
    restart
    end tell

  • Suddenly prompted to shut down

My mac book will suddenly prompt me to shut down or will shut down as soon as I start it up.  Any ideas on how I can solve this problem?

If About This Mac is reporting 2 GB of ram, is that what your MacBook is supposed to have, or is it reporting less?  If that is less than is installed, then that could be the source of your problem...defective ram causing kernel panics.

  • IBook g4 prompts to shut down contstanly...

My ole ibook has been giving me problems where it randomly brings up the Shut Down prompt like I hit the power button. Sometimes I can just hit escape it'll go away and sometimes I'll have to hit escape and it'll bring up the prompt 10 times or it'll just bring up the prompt and shut off my iBook.
Its pretty annoying especially since it takes like 3-5 minutes to book up the computer.
    Any idea whats going on?

Hey kst and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
you need to restart your computer. Hold own the Power button for several seconds or press the restart button.
OK that sounds like a kernel panic:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
    Here's a site on resolutions:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
You could also send us the log of what was going on when the panic occurred.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546?viewlocale=en_US
Generally speaking try removing your Airport Card then any user installed RAM as these are the most common causes. Then work through that page of resolutions.
    Good luck.

  • How can I prevent Firefox from shutting down to 5% when inactive?

My computer (running Win8, FF 22.0, just installed) is set for maximum performance, which means it enters sleep mode only when I tell it to. But recently FF 21.0 and 22.0 has started shutting down to 5% of its normal operating memory use after as little as 60 seconds or so of inactivity. Then when I try to use it, it will SLOWLY reload, sometimes taking as long as 5 minutes or more! This is a relatively new behavior and a basically intolerable one. I cannot find any setting under Tools that addresses this, and the right click on the icon upper left now only deals with resizing. I do not want to go back to IE and have never liked Chrome at all, so I would hate to leave FF but I simply cannot continue to wait several minutes do do everything.

At: “https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Menu+bar+is+missing Hidden menu bar:” the following appears. This reference was given in an earlier post here. My comments are added below inside << … >>>.
"If you're using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you now have an orange Firefox button that takes the most common functions and puts them in one menu." <<THIS CLEARLY SAYS “ORANGE BUTTON” AND THAT BUTTON SHOWS ON THE SCREEN SHOT, BUT THIS ORANGE BUTTON DOES NOT DO ANYTHING BUT OFFER “RESTORE, MINIMIZE, CLOSE”>>
"To temporarily show the old style menus, just press the Alt key. "<<THIS DOES NOT WORK AT ALL>>
"• To have them shown all the time, right-click on an empty section of the Tab Strip and check Menu Bar in the pop-up menu. "
<<WHEN THE MENU BAR IS REMOVED, THERE IS A FIREFOX DROPDOWN MENU – NB NOT A BUTTON IN ANY NORMAL SENSE OF THAT WORD—BUT THE INVENTORY OF FUNCTIONS IS QUITE DIFFERENT FROM THE MENU BAR’S INVENTORY AND THEREFORE NOT THE EQUIVALENT AT ALL.>>
<<IT MAY WELL BE THAT THE WRITERS HERE ARE USING “BUTTON” IN A SLOPPY, IMPRECISE WAY (RATHER, IN TWO QUITE DIFFERENT WAYS) AND THE ORANGE ”BUTTON” THEY ARE REFERRING TO IS SOMETIMES IN FACT THE DROPDOWN MENU TAB, AND NOT THE ORANGE BUTTON AT ALL, EVEN THOUGH THEY WRITE “ORANGE BUTTON” AND DISPLAY A SCREEN SHOT WITH AN ORANGE BUTTON. IN ANY CASE NOTHING IN THIS WHOLE MESS IS ACCURATELY DESCRIBED.>>
