How to reorganize folders and photos based on image capture time

I made the mistake of not carefully importing pictures from iPhoto and now have a bit of a mess. My photos show up in the iPhoto Library folder with the year/month/day (when viewing the Lightroom navigator) but then they seem in almost random order. Lightroom doesn't show them under any year/month/date. Is there any way to get Navigator to organize them like it organizes my new imports ? (YYYY/MM/DD etc). I may or may not have lost much of my iPhoto metadata. I was hoping Lightroom could just go through all the pictures (mostly JPG's) and just use the capture time to build it's database.
I have one additional issue which is when I moved machines, Lightroom seems to have bad meta-data for many of my pictures. It's possible that i just put these photos in the wrong physical directory but again, I was hoping I could get Lightroom to just scan the image capture time and put the pictures back where they belong.
Ben

do other kinds of files ever show up in that folder or just those pdf files?
If the latter then it should be pretty simple. make a workflow consisting of a single action "print finder items" (or "print images") and save the workflow as a plugin for folder actions. then attach this folder action to the folder in question. to do that control-click on that folder in finder and go to more->attach a folder action.

More detail please?  Are you talking about photos synced to the Photos app in the iPad, or photos taken by the iPad camera, emailed to it or added by a camera kit? Have you checked the User Guide for this - availble through the IPad Manuals link at the very start of this forum?

  • How to build folders and subfolders without duplicating photos everywhere

How do you organize photos in albums, and group albums into one "title"?  For example, a trip to Europe divided into albums for visits to different cities (without duplication).  I really want a Title -- then albums under that.

Your question is not clear - what exactly do you mean by "group albums into one 'title'"?
The general answer to your question is to simply use albums and folders - folders hold albums and/or other folders and albums hold photos - there is no duplication of anything - albums are pointer to photos in your library and are simply one way to view your photos
So you can easily have a set of folders and albums like
    Vacations
         Europe
            France
               City One album
               City Two album
            England
              City One album
              City Two album
          France
              City One album
              City Two album
        North America
           Mexico
              City One album
              City Two album
           Canada
              City One album
              City Two album
          United States
               Missouri
                  City One album
                  City Two album
And so on - that is exactly what you want to do i believe

  • How To Add Folders and Sub Folders

I am brand new (1 week) to my new Mac (iMac). In my Windows-based PC I used to have, for example, a folder named PHOTOS followed by sub folders designating certain categories that work for me, such as, "Family", "Vacations" etc, and I would make sure that all my uploads from my camers went to the appropriate folder.
I would like to accomplish the same thing in my Mac, but have no idea how to go about it. I do not even know how to create such folders and sub folders.
Is someone out there who can help, please?

    pstoll
In the Finder: File -> New Folder creates a new Folder. To nest a folder inside another one then simply drag the second one to the first.
But if you're trying to organise your photos, there's a much better way to do that on your Mac. Check out iPhoto It's a photo manager that's integrated throughout the Operating System. It's much, much more flexible than a bunch of folders in the Finder. You can keyword your pics, populate Smart Albums automatically, rate and edit your pics, all via iPhoto.
You can find out more here:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/
    there are some tutorials here
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#iphoto
    and a good forum here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=143
My best advice is to explore the app by dragging in maybe 100 pics and testing things out, gettting the hang of it. It's miles better than a folder hierarchy.

  • New Computer and New External Hard Drive - why do folders and photos not show up?

I replaced my desktop with a new laptop and external hard drive. I transferred photos from the desktop to the external hard drive. Lightroom 2 only shows the mapped hard drive, but does not show any folders or photos. Can Lightroom be set up to house all the photos on an external hard drive rather than using space on the internal laptop hard drive? Do the photos and folders need to be imported again into LR2? The photos are available for viewing when you search folders, but they open up in Photoshop not LR2.
What should I do to configure imports to be housed on the external hard drive? Is this wise? I will not be able to hold all the photos on the laptop internal hard drive. Photos used to be JPEG and DNG from D700. I am starting to see NEF. Does this replace DNG? Besides RAW I also need to have JPEG for other family members to access photos on other computers connected to the network. I am watching a tutorial DVD and slowly picking up how this all works. Let me know if I am not using the correct terms.
Hardware: HP laptop w/64bit, Buffalo 1TB RAID hard drive.

Lot's of questions here. I'll do a few.
Yes Lightroom can work with images on external drives. As many drives as you want.
I assume from what you said in your original post that you have had lightroom installed on the old desktop and now wish to transfer your catalogue and all files to the external drive and work from that.
So what you would do would be to transfer the entire contents of the lightroom folder on your old computer, except for any images, to the same location on your new laptop. This would include the catalogue files and any folders containing previews. Then you would copy all your image files to the new external hard drive. When you open lightroom you can then select the catalogue you copied from the old computer and open it. In the the folder pane in the library module you can then right click on one of the folders and select "locate missing files". Then you just need to point light room to the new location of your images. You may or may not need to regenerate all your previews.
I store all my images on external hard drives and I even run the catalogue and previews from the same external drives. I have backups of all my images of course. I have light room make backups of the catalogue to the C drive on my laptop so that the original and the backup are stored in different locations.
NEF is the proprietary file system for raw images used on Nikon cameras. DNG is a universal raw file format developed by Adobe. You can convert your files from NEF to DNG on import, but as Lightroom can read both types of files it is not necessary. At this point in time if you are using lightroom you should get similar results from either type of file.
To store imports on the new external drive you can you tell light room to copy the files to the new drive or you can manually copy the files to the new location and have light room import From the current location.
    Hope this helps
    Gordon

  • How to store videos and photos in external storage

    Hi,
May I know how do I store videos and photos into an external hard disk so that I can free up my Macbook storage?
Hope to receive advice on this.
    Thanks
    Stephen Lim

    Hi Stephen
Yes there are problems with this
    A. external Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to be used for VIDEO as KLAUS1 writes.
    B. a FireWire or Thunderbolt one is better than USB/USB2 as they performs badly to me especially when filling up.
    C. DO NEVER - move or alter any folders named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder as this will break the connection to iMovie
ONLY move Event's and Project's from within iMovie Application !
    D. Then the BIG problem - as I have no answer to - Video and Photos in iPhoto or Aperture.
Moving them to an external hard disk - and at least MY iMovie can not see them any more - resulting in broken Project's - most probably beyond repair.
and here I run into the wall of ignorance

  • How to make folders for photos

How can I sort my photos out into folders so that I can choose which photos I want as my desktop. At the moment it wont let me choose a specific folder to have rotating as my desktop so I'm having to have all my photos on rotation. Help anyone?!?!?!

Create the folder in Finder, you can put it anywhere you want in your home folder, and put your pictures in it.  Then, in System Preferences -> Displays -> Desktop click the + button at the bottom of the folder list and navigate to your newly created folder.

  • How to make folders in photo?

How to make folders in the photo app pre-loaded on the IPad?

Whne you are in the screen where you can select which Album to view, there should be an Edit button top right of the screen - tap that and then tap the New Album button that will then show top left and name your new album. You will then be shown thumbnails of your photos so that you can 'copy' those photos into that new album.
From what I understand with how it works, those photos won't be moved into the new album, instead they will remain in the original album and a pointer to them will go in the new album - so if you then delete the photo from its original album it will also be removed from all new albums that you've 'copied' it into.

  • How to burn folders and albums to dvd

how can I burn some folders and the albums it contains into a dvd?¿
    Message was edited by: vldmkr

Where will these folders/images be used?
If for another iPhoto user or for back up purposes then select the Albums and go Share -> Burn
If for use on a WIndows Machine or for someone who doesn't use iPhoto, then export the Albums to folders on the desktop and burn those with the Finder.

    Thanks for your answer,
In this case, I'm going to move the files and folders from one server to another, so it's not the scenario you mentioned.
