How to repair applications that will not start

I have programs that will not start on my iMac . I have never had one issue since purchased . Do I need to reinstall lion to resolve my issues?
Thank you in advance for your responses.

Check with this compatability table, check with the specs of the program, watch for the "for 10.5+" that doens't mean it will work for 10.6 or 10.7.
http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Use the developers uninstaller if possible, if not consult on their site etc., what is the manual uninstall methods.
Some programs have to use a uninstaller.
Sometimes you can simply drag and drop the program from the Applicaitons folder to the trash and that will be that, others have other bits in the System/Library/Extension folder (dangerous!) that can be removed by hand IF you know what to look for.
Usually a program will have it's name or other id info in their files, one can use Easy Find to locate all these named files. However don't go deleting without backing up your data off the machine.
delete the wrong file and your Mac will refuse to boot up
I don't advise "app undelete" programs, they tend to make people think that the app undelete program knows the right files to undelete and it doesn't, it just does a simple name search.
Good Luck

  • 2007 macbook that will not start

I have a 2007 macbook that will not start.  I get the gray screen with the apple icon,  spinning circle and the process bar will move a little.  I have tried command and r keys while booting but nothing happens. can anyone help me get it started?

Hi there. First, what operating system are you running? If you have an os that is newer that Snow Leopard and need to get to the restore partition you hold down the option or option r keys on start up.  If not you need an install disk to do this. If this is not possible. http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS2570  orhttp://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176  If you are able to use the restore option or have an install disk you can boot to you can use this to check and repair permissions or start up disk using disk utilities.

  • ZEN 6.5 SP2 IR1 Application Explorer Will Not Start

    Hi,
Recently a few users have complained that their application icons are
    not appearing on their desktop.
After a brief investigation, it appears that the Application Explorer is
not starting correctly (I.e. The icon does not appear next to the time)
All the Zen services have started and are running in the services
    control panel.
The following services are running in task manager:
    NALAGENT
    NALNTSRV
    NALRSTRT
    NALWIN
    WM
    XTAGENT
    ZENREM32
(I may have missed a few)
I've uninstalled and re-installed the ZDM Agent but that doesn't work.
Any idea as to why the Application explorer will not start?
    We're running ZDM 6.5 Sp2 IR1 on a Netware 6.0 Sp5 server and client
    version 6.5.20.13
    Thanks

Have you tried Manually Starting "Application Explorer" or "Application
    Window"?
These need to be started either from the "Run" Registry Key, the "Startup
Folder", the Login Script, or some other means.

Thanks for the help. I didn't know how to do a safe boot. It allowed me to get into disk utility and that sorted it out.

  • Have a C310a that will not start. Have +32VDC from Ac power adaptor, using on a Mac.

Have a PhotoSmart Premium e-All-in-One PrinterC310a, it will not turn on. We have been using it on an iMac and a MacBook, both OS X 10.6.7. Have been thru the HP resetting of the power adaptor etc, so I checked at the printer plug and had +32VDC, which is the correct input voltage. The printer still will not start, what am I missing?

Hey zzzzip! I know its a basic question, but have you tried using a different outlet that you know works? Here is the document on troubleshooting power issues:
The HP Product Won't Turn On or Respond
If you have gone through all theses steps I would contact telephone support.

  • Application server will not start up

    Hello,
I have read quite a few topics concerning this problem, and have tried many things but without success.
I am running on Windows XP Pro. The installation goes fine, but when I run a project, the application server cannot start, and I get a message after quite a long time saying that it can't start and to check my port numbers, etc.
I used to have Sun Java Creator, but I uninstalled it. I tried deleting the \Windows\System32\productregistry file. I tried uninstalling completely and reinstalling in C:\Sun\Creator2, but the problem is still the same. I tried deleting the domain with "asadmin" and recreating it, but I still get the problem.
I am posting all the relevant information from the logs, hopin someone will be able to help me out....

  • Mac OS 10.4.4 Application Server Will Not Start

Installed Mac 10.4.4 last night. The Applicaton Server worked for all my projects. Now I cannot start the Application Server in Creator or Creator 2 ea2.
Another possible problem is that I was running both Creator and Creator 2 ea2 at the same time, but neither will launch the App Server now with the other not running.
Has anyone successfully launched the App Server in Mac OS 10.4.4?
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hello Sakthi,
Thanks for the help. I got the server running again by finding yet another instance of Creator and started up the Server successfully. Strangely enough, all the other instances of Creator then were able to start up (now one at a time). Another thing, when the server was not starting up it was using different port numbers than normal.

  • Adobe AIR Application Installation will not start

I purchased a program called Video Alchemy which requires Adobe AIR to run but the installation window will not display and the installation does not start.
The Adobe AIR log install log file can be found here https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/59423416/Install.log
Here is a link to the VideoAlchemy.exe install file https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/59423416/VideoAlchemy.exe
Can anyone help me to get this program to install?

Thanks for the reply and solution MrSykes.
I uninstalled adobe AIR and ran a file and registry cleaner to delete any left over files and installs.
Then installed the v.15 Adobe AIR beta as recommended.
The cleaners I used (ccleaner & jv16 power tools) did find some temporary install files and remnants of the Video Alchemy install.
Tried the install again and still no installation window displays.
I'm running Windows 7 on my PC and even changed the installation file compatibility to Windows XP service pack 2 to no avail.
Funny that it installed fine on my notebook with Adobe AIR latest version running Windows 7.
I'm watching task manager as I'm attempting the install and videoalchemy.exe has some cpu usage then drops to zero activity.
Then Adobe AIR application Installer starts up then cycles to zero cpu activity.
I'm stumped on this one :-(
Thanks again for investing the time on my behalf.
    Regards
    Stephen

  • I have a imac intel core duo 2.0 ghz, 20" That will not start up...HELP

My iMac will not startup, I have tried everything, reset PRAM, attempt to boot into SAFE mode, I am unable to do so. I am currently booted up hard drive to mount.

Im having same problem and I have exhausted my knowledge of how to fix.
I can see the device is system profiler. Nothing comes up in Audio/Midi Set up though.
Garageband doesnt detect anything until I activate a network session then garageband says there is a midi input but I still get no sound whatsoever.

  • How to close tabs that will not close?

After being on several sites I am unable to close tabs that I am done with. Started a couple weeks ago.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
It is also possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • How to debug software that will not install

I had EMC Retrospect Express installed and working. But it stopped working. The program refused to start. So I tried uninstalling it manually by deleting all of its files. I used find in / to search for all things with ems, dantz, and retrospect and deleted them.
But the app refuses to reinstall. An icon briefly appears on the tray and disappears. I see nothing in the log files. What is happening? How can I get this app to reinstall?

    No more help from me.
R'E' was too complicated for poor half vast, see below. I have moved to SuperDuper.

  • I have songs in my iTunes App that will not play.  It keeps saying that this computer is not authorized to play would you like to authorize it.  I would but its asking me to authorize an account that was changed.  What do I do????

I have songs in my iTunes Application that will not play.  I keeps saying that this computer is not authourized to play name of song would you like to authourize it.  The problem is its the old account I had and that has been changed.  How am I going to authorize these songs when this account no longer exists.

I posted about this yesterday -- it happened to me, and the solution was incredibly simple. An Apple tech guy had me delete my SC Info Folder, located on my XP in Application Data.
    Here is my post:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15134112#15134112
Here is the link about the SC Info Folder (4th down):

It wasn't every song, just a few of them. A nightmare to figure out what to do, but it was solved upon reboot.

  • HT1455 What if my computer will not start up in safe mode?  What next?

What is the remedy for a MacBook that will not start up in safe mode?  The gray apple icon and progress wheel appear, I let go the shift key and the whole thing shuts off again.  Please help.  Thank you.

My understanding is that the Apple logo is produced by the disk and the spinning wheel shows that the software boot process has started.
1 - Shut down your Mac
2 - Press the power button to start and
3 - Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the S key
4 - At the prompt type the following and then hit return:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issues were found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 4 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do). When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type the following at the prompt and hit return:
    reboot
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.
    Good luck.

  • Firefox version 3.5.16 will not start under Windows Vista and Windows 7 32bit

I have a Windows Vista computer that will not start any newer version of Firefox than 3.5.16. The process will run (as seen in the Task Manager) but do nothing.
I have since updated Windows to version 7 and the problem persists.
I have tried uninstalling Firefox and all Addons (flash-player, pdf-reader) and deleting all files (even user-specific ones).
Firefox can't be started in Profilemanger or safe-mode either.
Is there anything short of reinstalling windows I can try?

    Solved it!
It was a dodgy version of Firebug (1.6.2) running, which would kill the disable/update process. It was killing something on the first run that would corrupt my Firefox.
    How I fixed it:
    * Download the latest Firefox
    * Install Firefox 4 (as Standard) in-place upgrade
    * Before finishing, un-tick the "Run Firefox Now" button
    * Hit Finish
    * Find Firefox in the Start Menu and hold Shift and click the executable (safe mode)
    * Leave everything disabled
    * You should now have a working Firefox!
Remove/update your add-ons as needed. I only had to upgrade Firebug in safe mode to get it working.
Odd how the check for updates completely broke this Firefox, wonder what was so bad about Firebug.
Hope this helps at least one other person! The "Run in Safe Mode" option is so hard to discover now when your browser is broken!
