  • How can I repair a File Vault sparsebundle?

Apple has directions for repairing a File Vault sparseimage under 10.3-10.4 here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2631
I couldn't find anything more up-to-date, so I followed those directions but using the different permissions setup in 10.5. Everything seemed to work fine up until it came time to mount the sparsebundle. It wouldn't mount. I could drag the sparsebundle into Disk Utility, but when trying to "Repair" or "Verify" I get this error message:
Unable to attach “testserver.sparsebundle”. (Operation not supported on socket)
\[DUDiskController viewablePartitions\] expecting DUDisk, but got nil
As I was typing this post, I figured out what to do. Being an Admin doesn't cut it; you have to be root. I did not find it listed online, so I'm jotting it here; do this instead of what Apple says:
    1. Disconnect from the network (turn off AirPort, unplug Ethernet) because we're about to temporarily log in as root, which could leave us exposed.
    2. To enable the root user, open Applications / Utilities / Directory Utility. Unlock the icon with your admin password, then choose "Edit menu > Enable Root User". If this is the first time, enter a password for the root user, or if you have forgotten your root password, choose "Edit menu > Change Root Password".
    3. Log in as root: Log out of the current account, then in the blank login screen, enter "root" as the username along with your root password. Or, if you have fast user switching enabled, make sure you are logged out of the FileVault in question, then pick "Login Window..." from the user menu. If you aren't allowed to type in a user name, open System Preferences > Accounts > Login Options, then disable "Automatic Login" and by "Display login window as" pick "Name and password".
    4. Mount the sparsebundle: From the Finder's "Go" menu, pick "Go to folder..." and enter "/Users/". Drill down to the sparsebundle inside your FileVault account, and double-click it to mount it. When asked for your keychain password, cancel. Then you will be asked for your FileVault account's password. For security, make sure the "Store this password in my keychain" checkbox is NOT checked. Enter your FileVault password. The sparsebundle should mount.
    5. Repair normally from Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. The sparsebundle should appear as both a disk and a volume in the left pane of the Disk Utility. When done, quit, eject the sparsebundle and log out of the root account.
    6. IMPORTANT: Log back in to a normal administrator account, open Applications / Utilities / Directory Utility, unlock it if necessary, then pick "Edit menu > Disable Root User". Lock the utility and quit.
    7. If you disconnected from the network in step 1, it's okay to reconnect now.
From a security standpoint, it's best to leave the root user disabled. Most of the time, an admin user can get temporary root privileges; this just happens to be an exception.

Figured it out and shared solution.

  • How do I eliminate File Vault Message at Shutdown?

    Hi,
I am hoping to reduce or eliminate the File Vault message (asking whether or not to reclaim disk space) at shutdown in order stop having to come back to the iMac to click on it in order to continue shutdown.
If anyone knows how to do this, any advice would be appreciated!
iMAC G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   File Vault enabled

    Hi, Paul.
AFAIK, there's no way to avoid this message if you've enabled FileVault, other than to disable FileVault.
If you use FileVault, then you should not ignore the message.
When FileVault prompts you to permit it to reclaim space, this is because the encrypted sparse disk image that FileVault creates of your Home folder has unused space that must be reclaimed. With this sparse disk images, when you trash a file and empty the Trash, while the file is gone, the space it occupied is still being consumed by the sparse disk image. The sparse disk image only returns to the size of the files it contains when it is compacted, which is what FileVault is requesting permission to do.
Unless you let FileVault periodically reclaim this space, the sparse disk image could grow to fill your hard drive, even though your encrypted Home folder contains far fewer files than the capacity of the drive.
    Good luck!

  • How to Repair A File Changed into an Alias?

    hello,
so i have a really frustrating problem. and here it is:
--oct 25 i backed up all my files onto an external hard drive (EHD)
--i upgraded my osx from snow leopard to mavericks
--attached my EHD to laptop to retrieve files
--discovered that several folders and documents had been changed to aliases.
not sure why this happened because i have drag and dropped files and folders directly from my desktop to my EHD without any changes. in fact i created a folder and some files on my desktop and drag and dropped them into the same EHD without any issues.
--i thought it might have something to do with mavericks.
--i resintalled snow leopard. still have the same problem & i cannot open the files or folders that have been changed into aliases on my EHD.
for one folder's type description, it says it is a unix executable file not an alias. even though there is a little black arrow showing on the folder icon.
when i try to open another folder with a black arrow it says: the alias "_______" cannot be opened because the original item can't be found
another message i am getting when i try to open a word document, .docx, with an arrow is: item "_______" is used by Mac OS X and can't be opened....
i compared two documents--one with an arrow and one without---there were several differences of course. the arrowed document has changed and the UTI, type, creator and format are the changes. now the format is HFS+ not MS-DOS.
does anyone know what kind of problem this is and how to fix it?
    thanks in advance
    rob

You can put its code into the XML by using a textual encoding such as Base64. However, as images tend to have quite a lot of bytes and textual encodings tend to increase the amount of data even more, I'd rather deliver a pack of files and just state path/name of the images in XML.

  • How to repair excel file?

I have a corrupted excel file, in the sense , when I try to open my excel file, it says it is corrupted and the file has some Unsupported data and if I proceed to open, it says the Unsupported data cannot be repaired or removed. Function Open and Repair
doesn't help me. I'm using MS Excel 2013 on Windows 7 Ultimate.

    Have a look here:

Still facing same problem then I will recommend you to try Excel Repair Toolbox
The following steps might help recover your file:
    1. Click the File menu
    2. Click Open
    3. Locate the file, but do not click the Open button.  Instead, click the drop-down arrow next to the Open button.
    4. Click "Open and Repair"
    5. In the dialog that pops up, choose "Repair".  If that does not work, try the "Extract Data".
    6. Let us know if this works.  If not, we will see what else we can come up with for you.

  • How do i retrieve file vault protected files from an external hard disk that used to be my mbp's hard drive? the hard disk got corrupted and will no longer boot. I put it in an enclosure and attempted to copy my files but failed because of FV encryption.

This external hard disk used to serve as the main drive of my mbp. It got corrupted and the OSX would no longer load. I upgraded to a 500gb hd and used the old hd as an external drive. I tried to copy my files but i could not access them because of the filevault encryption. 110gb of hd space appears as used which means that my files are still in the drive. Is there a way to retrieve these files? thanks

According to your post, you're using Leopard, so FileVault only encrypts your user folder (unlike Lion). On the mounted external drive, in your user folder, you should see a file called username.sparsebundle, with username being your user name. Double-click that file to open it and it should prompt you for a password. Type in your password and the file will mount as a volume in Finder. You should be able to copy all of your files over.

isn't csh. Seems valid to me.
You want to change this to:
setenv PATH /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/etcThat should work as well, but doesn't really explain the error.
The whole 'syntax error at line 4: `(' unexpected' looks more like a sh/ksh error to me. Exactly what I'd expect if the .cshrc were being executed by an sh-style shell (although bash doesn't seem to complain).
