How to repair split fusion drive?

After experiencing problems with Yosemite, I reverted to Maverick using a time machine and I had to rename the HDD to McIntosh Hd since the SSD was too small to accept so now I can't remember the name of the HHD prior to changing its name.  I use an iMac 2012 with a Fusion 128/1tb.  Hope I can find a solution.

  • How to reset 3TB fusion drive to original partition scheme

When I first purchased my 27" iMac in early 2013 I was unable to use Boot Camp to create a Windows partition (with the version of OSX it shipped with bootcamp was initially disabled but added in an update later).  I found a guide online for untangling the Fusion Drive partitions and essentially setting up bootcamp manually.
However, a few days ago I had Windows 8 get screwed up and needed to reformat.  I figured that since Apple now updated Mavericks to allow my machine to use bootcamp I would start from scratch and do it properly.  The problem is, I cannot seem to get my machine back into a "factory default" setup.  I tried removing the CoreStorage volume and letting the Disk Utility tool "reset" the drive, and that -seemed- to work.  I had one 3TB partition (according to the GUI) and re-installed OSX.  I used Bootcamp to split 2TB for Windows (games) and leave 1TB for Mac.  Everything went fine and I restarted into the Win8 installer.  However, at this point Windows refused to install to the 2TB partition.  I tried formatting it, and delete/create but it said it couldn't install to that partition.  The confusing part is that according to Windows I had about 8 partitions (EFI and Recovery I understand but the rest I don't know the reason for).
So now I'm back at the OSX Recovery and this is what "diskutil list" is giving me.  Why are there all these 524.3 KB partitions?  I can't seem to remove or merge them.  I know I should have recorded what the original structure is, but it's too late now.  Can someone tell me what the 3TB Fusion Drive *should* look like, and how I can get back to that?

  • How to Repartition 3TB Fusion Drive?

Hi, I've noticed an interesting phenomenon of my iMac, which has a 3TB fusion drive. The phenomenon is that the fusion drive has a 2.2 TB + 800GB partitions. I understand fusion drive is actually a 128GB flash drive plus a 2.87GB hard drive. Then why is the fusion drive divided into a 2.2 TB and a 800 GB partitions?
Anyways, that was just my curiosity. I have a practical question. I am trying to install Windows 8.1 on this iMac to do some development/environment testing works. I realized when I use Boot Camp 5.1, it will not let me install Windows 8.1 successfully. The error is when I head to Windows installation, formatted the Boot Camp partition to NTFS (or simply just format it), it will keep telling me:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed GPT disks"
I then tried making a USB bootable disk through UNetBootin. It tells me the same thing. I don't have a CD or DVD drive on my iMac, so I cannot try burning a DVD. So then I started my research about this error.
And it seems to be a common error based on my research. The solution is that I should remove the bootcamp partition from Boot Camp Assistant and then use the Disk Utility to create a new partition for Windows. I did the first part, but then I head to the Disk Utility, it says:
"The full size of the Fusion Drive is not available for repartitioning."
I restarted the computer, and it tells me the same message.
Now I guess I have two questions, answering either one can help me through my goal.
    1. How to create partitions on a 3TB fusion drive?
    2. How to install Windows 8.1 on a Boot Camp partition?

Hey I meant to answer my own question! Thanks for reminding me.
A good reference link is on Super User where some other users already answered methods for Macbook Pro. Here is the link:
    http://superuser.com/questions/481650/cant-use-bootcamp-partition-for-windows-8- installation/846439#846439
I am going to copy my reply from the thread. Here we go:
I was stuck with this challenge last night as well. After 10 hours, I finally have resolved this. As it turns out, not all OSX are the same. For example, I have Macbook Pro Retina, iMac, and Mac Pro. ClaitonLovatoJr's solution works on Macbook Pro Retina but not iMac or Mac Pro.
    Here is why:
iMac (2014) and Mac Pro (2014) have different types of hard-drive. So far I haven't gotten Mac Pro to work, because it has the most particular type of hard-drive, perhaps Windows simply does not support. But again, I haven't tried for very long.
On iMac, here is how you can get Windows 8.1 (Professional) to install.
Since late 2012, iMac have fusion drive, which means its hard-drive is combined with SSD and traditional hard-drive. As a result, Apple has an interesting way to manage it. I am not going to the details. In short, EFI would not work with the hardware, so we must go through Apple's Boot Camp.
The first thing to do is to find a USB flash drive. Many people including me failed because we try to use SD card. This won't work because SD card is too advance for what we are doing. It will load the install program, but after loading it becomes all Windows, and then it will fail the installation. So what we need is an old fashion flash drive. I tried using SD card adapter, it failed too. It might have something to do with the type of adapter I have. But to be safe, we should USE FLASH DRIVE.
Then we will create an installation stick with Boot Camp Assistant. Be sure to use the latest 5.1 version. And we must check downloading from Apple, because it will give you drivers you need to complete the installation. If downloading failed for some reason, we can download the files here:
    http://supportdownload.apple.com/download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Appl e_Software_Updates/Mac_OS_X/downloads/031-3384.20140211.Xcc3e/BootCamp5.1.5621.z ip
And then manually place the files to the installation disk.
I suggest not to check install just yet, in case you need to manually place the file.
Now we can finally use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows. We must use it because Boot Camp is the only application that can create usable disk space for the installation. Disk Utility or other type of applications will not work. Apple has a very specific design for the hybrid EFI-MBR system for iMac's fusion drive.
Then the computer should restart, and very likely to stuck in black screen. Don't panic, this is because there is a bug in Apple's Boot Camp loading system. The wait time is too short, if you have many devices connected it will not load correctly. We can power off the computer by holding the power button and then power up while holding option key.
Now we cannot choose EFI-Windows when booting up, we must choose Windows. EFI is faster and more advance, but we cannot use it.
Now we should be able to boot into the installation interface, a very lowres one. If you see a highres interface it means it went to the EFI. Power down and try again. If you don't see the lowres interface, something went wrong. Boot into OSX and remove Windows through Boot Camp Assistant (actually just to kill the new partition), and then redo everything.
If you are in lowres interface, it's not all done yet. You still need to format the new partition, either just by clicking on format or using command center. Now you should be able to install!
After installation we can set up Windows, but it will die and reboot. Don't panic, because iMac is not design for Windows. Windows thought it had some hardware failure. And then we will be able to login after rebooting, but it will stuck for a long period of time - like 20 to 30 minutes. This is because it needs to download and set up some drivers for the odd environment it encountered. Finally, we will see pop up to encourage us to install Boot Camp on Windows. We don't have to. We can always use option key went starting the computer. But it's up to you.
When shutting down Windows sometime it will fail and give you errors, this is because Windows ultimately does not work with Apple's driver very well (fusion drive or other hardware). No worry, just power down by holding the power button.
    Hopefully this help!

  • Repair DIY fusion drive possible?

It seems as the mechanical drive in my DIY fusion drive setup has failed. It took forever to start the computer and the disk sounds weird. I ran the disk tool and it said that it had repaired something that was broken (can't remember what). When I restarted the computer I got a questionmark instead of an apple during startup. If I boot from an external drive I can't even find my fusioin drive in Finder. Can this be fixed or am I screwed?

You will need to reboot the machine with the DIY Fusion drive from a clone or a USB thumb drive with the Recovery HD on it. Then open Terminal and type diskutil list to view the drives. You would then need to rebuild your Fusion drive using the Terminal commands you previously used like LowLuster points out.
Using the Recovery HD would be preferred, in my opinion, because after rebuilding your Fusion drive you can Reinstall OS X from the OS X Utilities menu.

  • How do i restore fusion drive to default status?

Hi there, I've mucked around with the drive accidentally in the past trying to do clean installs and just want to remove any partitions I've created or random and unused drives. I just want it to look and be like when I first opened it out the box if that makes sense. Its the iMac 21.5-inch with fusion drive.
I've uploaded what my disk utility and terminal look like.
    Thanks!

  • How reformating Imac 27' Fusion Drive

    Hello Mac Comunity,
I need to reformat the hard disk drive IMac Fusion
Is there a special procedure to be followed or I can do like other Mac?
Thanking you in advance for your help,
    best regards,

    Bonjour,
J'ai besoin de reformater le disque dur de IMac Fusion drive
Est-ce qu'il y a une procédure particulière à respecter ou je peux le faire comme sur les autres Mac ?
En vous remerciant d'avance pour votre aide,
    Cordialement,
    Francois

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Both have got problems with Windows on Boot Camp, so it doesn't mind which one you have. Note that 3 TB hard disks support came with OS X 10.8.3, so there may be problems with it.
To avoid problems, I recommend you to install Windows on a virtual machine using Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox. However, it's not good for things like graphic performance, and it doesn't use all the hardware of your computer. To be honest, it's better to choose a 1 or 2 TB hard drive, so you can be sure that Windows will work correctly

  • How to repair my hard drive

    Hello everyone, happy holidays
I have a Macbook Pro (4 years old)
My main problem is this: My disk drive does not seem to read CD/DVD's anymore.
Background: I have recently tried to install snow leopard in order to install an itouch. however, everytime I insert the disk, it spins for a while, then gets kicked out. i tried running the first aid repair program in order to verify my mac hard drive. I got the following message:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
However, the repair button is not selectable. More so, I'm not even sure this is the main problem.
The main question: Does this sound as though I need to physically replace the disk drive? If this is just a hard drive repair thing, how do I run the repair program?

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc (Tiger?) & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
    Click _*Repair Disk.*_
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.

  • How to repair internal hard drive failure?

Well so I have a new mac book pro 13 with retina and the internal hard drive just disappear after doing a time machine backup. When I turn it on it comes the Recovery 10.10.1 disk and just that, normally you could do a hard drive partition like ''Macintosh HD'' from the internal hard drive that is like ''500GB toshiba blah blah'' something like that, but the thing is that in disk Utility the only thing I see is ''Macintosh HD'' and no internal drive, and also when you select it and you go to the Partition tab everything is grayed out, btw there is just two tabs the partiton one and the first aid one? I don't care if i lose the data on my hard drive because it was new. what should I do?

    H. In the disk utilities the base system drive that you see is the recovery partition. You should be seeing above the base drive two other drives .One is the main drive, that should name the drive and it's size as in 250 G The one directly below that is the partitioned drive that the operating system is on. Clicking on the upper  drive should show down at the bottom right as GUID  and should say S.M.A.R.T status verified. Try starting up by holding down the option or the option r key and see if you go to the recovery partition. Which should have option for disk utilities  terminal and recovery and I believe internet.

  • Disabling Fusion Drive and Installing Windows on SSD of Late 2012 iMac

Hi, everyone.  After a two-year wait, I'm ready to buy my first iMac (was waiting for USB 3.0).  Before I get into my questions, I'll give you an overview of where I'm coming from so we can keep the discussion focused.
    My Usage
I'm buying an Apple computer because it is the best-looking, quietist, and most powerful all-in-one computer I can find right now, but Windows is still my preferred operating system.  I've used OS X before – it looks great and I'm sure it works great for a large number of people, but it's not for me.  Windows works well and efficiently for me and I have thousands of dollars of design software for Windows.  I'm not interested in a virtualization solution because of my performance needs.  However, I do want to keep the OS X installation, if possible, for website testing and to play around with to learn the operating system better.
    What I Want
I was attempting to buy the Late 2012 iMac last weekend, but it appears the BootCamp specifications and the Fusion Drive are currently limiting my usage needs.  I'm configuring the top model iMac with the i7-3770 processor, 24GB RAM (8 default + 16 from Crucial), GTX 680MX, and the 3TB Fusion Drive.  I don't actually want to use the Fusion Drive, though.  I want Windows 7 64-bit and OS X 10.8 installed on the 128GB SSD and to use the 3TB hard drive as storage for my music, videos, photos, and documents.
    My Questions
    1.  I've found a bunch of posts regarding installing Windows on the Fusion Drive, but they all seem to be about putting Windows on the slower 3TB hard drive portion and/or about trying to keep the Fusion setup after installing Windows.  Does anyone have a walk-through for a new Mac user on how to break the Fusion Drive configuration and install Windows 7 and preferably OS X on just the SSD?
    2.  I've seen a bunch of posts debating about whether Windows can be installed natively using EFI to bypass the BootCamp limitations.  Is this possible?  The 21.5" version is running EFI version 2.0, so I can only assume the 27" would too, but it's not been added on the Apple website yet (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237).  From what I understand, Windows requires at least version 2.0 to run in EFI mode.  Also, if I am able to get this method to work, will I still be able to install the Windows drivers from the OS X installation USB (or do they even come with USB drives anymore?)?
    3.  If I have to use BootCamp, I assume I will have to split the 3TB drive into 1TB and 2TB partitions for BootCamp to see it (so Windows can see it).  So I'd have Windows 7 and OS X on the SSD, and two storage partitions on the 3TB HDD that would show up as two drives for my files that both operating systems could access.  Is this assumption correct?
    4.  I've seen posts about OS X automatically trying to rebuild the Fusion Drive.  Let's say I'm able to get Windows installed on the SSD.  Will OS X, or future updates to it, ruin my Windows installation?  I would hate to do all this work and then have an Apple update corrupt everything.
I know this is a long post, but I don't want to spend over $3,000 until I can be sure I can make it work for me.  Thanks to anyone who can help!
    iMac, Windows 7

First, an advice: Boot Camp isn't compatible with 3 TB hard disks and Fusion Drive. For 3 TB hard disks, there's a workaround, but it doesn't work on a 3 TB Fusion Drive, so you won't be able to install Windows until Apple fixes this, so my advice is to wait until Apple launches OS X 10.8.3 or buy the iMac with a 1 or 2 TB hard disk and an external disk.
    1. The SSD is used automatically by OS X to store the applications and data you most use, but Windows can't use it, and there's no workaround for this.
    2. You can try to install Windows 8 in EFI mode, but I don't guarantee that it works. I tried it on my iMac and I started getting BSODs after some startups. Also, Macs don't use UEFI 2.0 (Macs use EFI 1.x), so you can't use Windows 8 advanced features such as Secure Boot. For Windows 7, you can't install it in EFI mode (it requires UEFI 2.0 or later)
    3. Fusion Drive only allows you to have two volumes, and with Boot Camp, you can only have two volumes on your computer: one for OS X and the other one for Windows. That's because Boot Camp emulates a BIOS to make Windows run (although it isn't neccesary in Windows 8, if Apple would want).
    4. First, you can't install Windows on the SSD. Then, OS X shouldn't ruin Windows because each operating system have got its space

  • Fusion Drive has corrupted my drives

About a three months ago I went to do a fresh install and Mountain Lion OSx automatically fusioned my SSD and HDD drives together. After looking online how to un-fusion the drives I got my system back to normal.
Today I when to do a fresh install because I was having problems with simple things like the terminal and updating to the latest version of OSx. When I restarted the mac to do an fresh install I get an issue stating that there is a drive error in both my SSD and HDD in disk utility on the boot up screen. it then says, do I want to fix it, I ok it but nothing happens. If I come out of the boot mode and restrat the OSx normally and the go into disk utility and check my drives everything is ok, so what gives.
This stupid fusion drive thing apple added to the osx has messed up my drives and all I want is my mac back to the normal state it was when I first brought it in april.
Any help getting my drives to work in boot up would be a godsend.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tyrone

"After looking online how to un-fusion the drives I got my system back to normal."
This would cause the issue you are describing. You corrupted your file system by destroying the logical volume.

If your volume was encrypted, the recovery partition won't be able to repair anything until it is decrypted. If you can't repair it:
According to Apple's FAQ, repairing a fusion drive erases it. Essentially, DU must reformat the drives. This makes sense:

  • Creating a Fusion Drive Safely

Hello.  I currently have a macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch with a 256 SSD start up and a 1T regular hard drive with 16GB RAM.
Even though the 1T hard drive is in the DVD drive it sort of just acts like an external hard drive as it shows up as a separate drive in finder and I am wondering if one of you amazing people can tell me how to make a fusion drive in a way that is safe and time machinable, so that for all functional purposes I just turn on my computer and it looks like I have a 1.256T system that flows perfectly.
Also if this is achieved and I can time machine back it up; in a few years when I upgrade to say the new 2T Macbook pro ssd will there be any issues importing directly from time machine if my previous computer, the one I am using now, had or has a fusion drive.
    Thank you.

Oh, my solid stage 256 is where the original hard drive used to be and the 1terrabye regular hard drive is in where the dvd drive used to be.  If the dvd drive is the optical drive then I should be having the correct hardware configuration.
If that is correct and I do have the correct configuration, can you please share with me a recommended link or procedure to follow for making me a DIY Fusion Drive.
I talked to one of the techie guys from Simply Computing yesterday (apple authorized dealers in canada) and he said that he has this setup and it works great and when I mentioned about performance, he said that there is a slight reduction in speed and described it as, "A normal solid state is 4 times as quick and with a fusion it is 3.5 times".
If all this info is correct I would just like to proceed with it and get a recommendation for how to do it or a suggested link that has been used and proven to work for such DIY Fusion Drives.  Is the one that I shared good enough for it.  Thanks everyone for your kind time and attention to this.

  • Is Disk Utility in OS X 10.8.2 the version of Disk utilit that controls the Fusion Drive on new Imacs?

is Disk Utility in OS X 10.8.2 the version of Disk utilit that controls the Fusion Drive on new Imacs?

No. Only those computers with a Fusion Drive installed will get the special version of Disk Utility. Do a Google search if you want to find out how to create a fusion drive with older systems, but I suggest it's a waste of time.

  • 3TB Fusion Drive dying / dead? iMac late 2012

I purchased a 'Refurbished 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7' from the Apple UK refurb store in March 2013 with a 3TB Fusion Drive. It has been fine up until I installed Yosemite when it started to freeze all the time and I had the spinning ball all the time.
Only way to get back was to hold the button at the back and reboot. Kept doing this until I backed up and did a clean install of Yosemite. Fine for a week or two then happened again. I have just wasted a whole day trying to go back to Mavericks and it worked fine for an hour or two then went the same way, spinning ball, unresponsive so I can eliminate Yosemite now as it is fine on my Macbook and has been since the day I installed it (same day I installed in iMac).
Just tried another clean install but it first said the HD had failed and do I want to repair the Fusion drive? My guess is that the SSD is fine but the other drive is dying a slow death.
Have a genius appointment booked in for tomorrow so will take it up there to see what they say. Any idea on what price I am looking at for a Apple to fit a replacement 3TB HD at all? Paid £2k for this and not done 2 years yet so not best please and dubious about going for another Fusion Drive again. Didn't take Apple Care although should have really, especially with a refurb. Hindsight eh!
Just tried again to re-install Mavericks and getting 'Install Failed' The Installer could not start the computer from "Macinotosh HD". Try selecting your disk using the Startup Disk utility.

  • I deleted my bootcamp via DU and then deleted the hard drive by using the terminal. My BOOTCAMP is still there and now my fusion drive is separated from the SSD portion and I have no idea how to fix it.

First off I have a 3tb fusion drive.
I created a 200gb bootcamp, I tried deleting the bootcamp because I thought I messed it up and googled how to delete a mac partition which told me to use Disk Utility, did that and then erased it and somehow it got locked and wouldn't let me do anything to any partition on my hard drive (everything was greyed out)
After looking up and googling for hours I found a post saying the only way to fix it would be to go into CMD+R and go into the terminal window and type out disklist and then find the first UUID number and do something along the lines of disklist delete (UUID) i forget the exact formula. I did this, and then I had 3 separate untitled hard drives.
One in the size of 1.9gb on in 800gb and one in 121.3gb (which is the SSD), I put my time machine backup onto the 1.9gb untitled and now my computer is booting slowly (because it's no longer running off of the SSD and the original bootcamp is still there.
To be honest I am absolutely confused on what else to do!
Is there anyway I can fix this?

How do I go about deleting and then re-adding the hard drives? Completely lost on how to make it back to being a 3gb fusion drive.
Thank you for all your help, I honestly really appreciate it.
I followed your instructions and got the following

  • How do i install Windows on SSD with a Fusion Drive?

    Hello everyone,
i currently have a perfectly working iMac late 2013 with 1TB Fusion Drive.
I would like to install Windows INSIDE A SSD PARTITION.
Classic bootcamp will store Windows inside the mechanical hd and this slows things...
How do i put windows inside the SSD? Does anyone have a step by step tutorial?
    Thanks.

What is the purpose of this?
I have my drive formatted case sensitive on purpose for more security and stability.
Why on earth would y'all choose to do this?
