How to repair the Time Capsule without losing data?

Hi everyone,
I am from Vietnam. My 2TB Time Capsule is not working anymore. The LED light is not lit. Brought it for warranty claim. Apple reseller in my country agree to replace a new one for me. But the problem is I will lose all the data. I believe it's HDD still good. But they can't help me to get data. Please advise where can repair the Time capsule in which they can retain the data for me.

Before you do this be sure and let Apple know that is what you are doing so it will not void the warranty on your Time Capsule.
That will void the warranty. Generally Apple will not allow you to recover data.
The TC is basically a backup target for TM.. this is not considered valuable in and of itself. You simply buy the new TC and make a new clean backup.
If you put data on the TC, it is without any means to backup itself and nor can TM backup data on network drives.. so you are stuck. And that is why we do not recommend TC usage as a NAS.
See if the reseller is strict about the policy.. some will be prepared to help you out.
The hard disk has to be removed from the TC.. which is a sealed unit. The hard disk can then be put in a USB holder and the material on the drive copied to the new TC, or any external or network drive.
There is absolutely no way without removing the drive in a dead TC.

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files?  When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.
Then can i access these files only on the time capsule without connecting it?
Not sure what you mean.  You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.

  • Can i delete photos from my comp once they are stored in time capsule without losing them?

Can I delete my photos from my computer after i have backed up to time capsule without losing them?

NO.. this is not how TM works.. once deleted from the Computer, it will be deleted eventually from the back.. when is unknown.
    See Q20 http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
Use an external drive to store the photos and include that in the TM backup.
If you copy the files to a separate directory on the TC, that is different to using TM.
But then you have no backup and the TC has no backup of itself.. indeed it cannot.. nor can TM backup a network drive.
You never want to have only one store of your files. Especially things like photos which are irreplaceable.

That it is still working is miraclous.. most have died.. lots started flaking out at 18months to 2years..
    See deadtimecapsule.org
The few that remained now seem to have reached EOL.. you can repair if you have some skills.. fairly cheaply.
But it is well and truly time to replace.

  • HT201250 How to backup the Time Capsule to an external drive using Time Machine?

Most of my data is on my Time Capsule since the hard drive on my iMac is too small for my music/movies/pictures and also so multiple devices can wirelessly access the data. I want to back up the files from my iMac and the Time Capsule on an external hard drive using the Time Machine. However, it seems that the Time Machine ignores the Time Capsule as a data source. How can I get this to work?

No, I don't believe this solves your problem.
TIme Machine can be used with a Time Capsule as a backup solution from connected macs and their drives but not from network drives, NAS or Time Capsules.
Thus, if you store files for LAN access on a TC internal drive, and want to back them to the USB/external drive attached to that TC, you cannot use Time Machine to do so.
Time Machine has not way of backing up ANY Time Capsule or NAS or WInPC or other networked drive, as far as I can tell. You will have to use some other backup software.
This is exactly what I bought the TC for myself (tried to use the internal drive on the TC as a NAS for my LAN, storing my music and photos and documents and bought a LaCie 2TB USB3 extneral drive to connect to the TC and hoped to be able to use Time Machine to backup the internal drive to the LaCie drive....but this does not work, as TM cannot backup from a network drive or TC device.

I have a Time Capsule with 2tb of storage, and an I-Mac with 500Gb. (which is at capacity) Can I use the Time Capsule to store data from my hard drive that I want to access later in addition to backing up the hard drive?

Can I use the Time Capsule to store data from my hard drive that I want to access later in addition to backing up the hard drive?
Yes, but if you move the "original" data on your iMac to the Time Capsule....then the "original" data is now on the Time Capsule disk.
When...not if...the Time Capsule disk has a problem, you have no backups for this data.
Perhaps a much safer plan might be to add an external hard drive attached directly to your iMac. Then, move the data to that drive from the iMac.
Now, Time Machine will back up both your iMac and the external hard drive so you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another. Would that plan work for you?

  • Can i buy a smaller macbook air (64gb) but use the time capsule for additional data ?

can i buy a smaller macbook air (64gb) but use the time capsule for additional data ?

If you plan to store important "original" or "master" files and documents on the Time Capsule, then you might want to think about a way to back up those files to another hard drive.
Why? If the Time Capsule has a problem...and you have no backups....you lose everything.

  • How do I set up the Time Capsule without an internet connection

How do I set up the Time Capsule as a wireless hard drive without an internet connection.   I am in a office situation in which I cannot access my work network.  I need to be able to share files on the Time Capsule over the wire connection.

Are you using a v6 uitlity.. because it is a toy.. ??
Get v5 utility and then you can hold down the option key and select the right mode.
If you have lion, just install it.. For ML follow this.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Reformatting Time Capsule Without Losing Backups

Here's my dilema: I was visiting a friend and attempted to join his wifi network. While joining his network I was prompted by time capsule to create a network name and type in a password. I made the mistake of doing this (I'm not sure what I was thinking). Apparently I hijacked his time capsule and have locked him out from backing up his computer and even accessing his backups. He's unable to log on at all. Has anyone ever made this mistake? OR does anyone know of methods of reformatting time capsule without him losing his backups? I apologize if this is vague... Clearly I have limited experience with time capsule.
    Best,
    Jake

LOL.. you can simply press reset..
The soft reset will change all the passwords to default for 5min and he can change them during that time.
    See resets
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728
Soft reset you just touch for the reset for a second or two.
No reset.. soft hard or factory will wipe data from the drive.

  • How to use the time capsule with my existing router?

Here is my situation. I have Alltel PCD UM185 USB modem for their mobile broadband internet. I have a Cradlepoint MBR1000 router which I plug the usb modem into to share the internet through a wireless network which has WPA security on it. I want to use my 1TB time capsule to backup the computers in my house wirelessly and not as a router. What connection do I need to make and how to do I setup the time capsule this way? I can't figure it out. Thanks for any help in advance. If you need more information just ask.
    Thanks,
    John

Steven's solution will work just fine if you want to connect the Time Capsule using ethernet.
You might also consider configuring the the Time Capsule to "Join" the wireless network. In this type of configuration, backups would occur only over wireless and you could locate the Time Capsule virtually anywhere it can receive a good, strong wireless connection. Important Note...the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are not enabled in this type of configuration, so you will not be able to connect using ethernet.
Open AirPort Utility and click Continue
Then select the option to "Join a wireless network" and follow the prompts

  • Can I use the Time Capsule without using Time Machine?

Can I just use it as a wireless backup storage device? I'm not a huge fan of Time Machine. is Time Machine the only interface for the Time Capsule?

Hmmm, I can't see where the confusion originates. The table near the bottom of www.apple.com/timecapsule/specs.html has one row labelled "For backup using Time Machine" and another row labelled "For AirPort Disk with a USB hard drive".
The requirement for backup via Time Machine is OS 10.5.1 or better. Time Machine is not supported in pre-Leopard (OS 10.5) nor in Windows.
The requirement for using Time Capsule as a remote disk is identified as "Mac with Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later" or "PC with Windows XP (SP2) or Windows Vista; Bonjour for Windows (included on Time Capsule CD)".
Doesn't that pretty much spell out that Time Capsule works as a network drive without the need for Time Machine?
Also Joe (the OP) never indicated any desire to use it with Windows so I'm not sure why all the discussion about Windows compatibility. ??
Also the quote posted by Henry seems pretty clear:
"Time Capsule with Time Machine in Leopard is the ideal backup solution. But that doesn’t mean Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can’t enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because it mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily."

  • How reliable is the time capsule ?  I have read that it dies after 2yrs.

How many years do most people get out of the time capsule?

You should get 3years out of any Gen4 TC.
I think the weak point has changed. It was overheating and power supply. That used to kill them fast.
Apple did fix that.. mostly.. running too hot, still can raise its ugly head.. but that indicates a fault more than normal operation.
But instead of best quality 7200rpm drives, to save power and therefore heat they used cheapest WD green drives money can buy. I am now seeing more drive failures in the later ones than power supply issues.
    I would suggest..
    1. TC is suitable for TM backup.. if you store files on it.. make sure you take steps to back it up yourself.. TC cannot auto backup. It is not a reliable place for file store.
    2. Consider 3years an economic life point.. sell and buy a new one, even if it is running perfectly. Hard disks die quick. The fact is hard disk quality has gone down as the prices declined. It can give no warning.. one day.. no hard disk.
    3. Pricing is still very keen.. you will find it difficult to find anything as cheap as the TC for TM backups on a network. For desktop computers, always use external drives.. these are faster.. less issues.. cheaper.. no network traffic.
    4. Gen 4 TC is well overdue for replacement. How do you factor that in??

  • How to increase the image size without losing resolution in iPhoto?

    Dear All
I have pics i took with my phone which is not an iphone, just little sony ericsson phone.
Is there a way to increase the image size without losing resolution in iPhoto please? Or cheap 3rd party software or shareware perhaps?
    thank you very much.
    veedeekay

iPhoto has no way to do that. You'll need an external editor for the job. Not all have the capability. I know Photoshop has.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • I want know how to close the time capsule the "DHCP"

    Dear Sir,
I want to know how to close the "dhcp" on time capsule. Tks!
    Br,
    William

If you are on Lion download the utility that actually works, 5.6 as v6 is useless.
Go to manual setup, go to the Internet tab, go to DHCP, turn it off.
That will then require you to manually set dhcp or use a different dhcp server but pointing back to the TC as gateway. If you are using something else as main router, just bridge the TC, that will automatically turn off DHCP.
